After giving up more about 90 yards, the defense finally stopped them. It wasn't pretty but they got the job done however imperfectly.
The offense now needs to respond - preferably giving the defense enough time to catch a breath.
That's not textbook coverage. The corner needs to find the football. A better throw and it's a PI and 1st and goal. I wish announcers would stop saying that. You can't do it on the next level and that should be the end goal.

Keep in mind. One missed tackle by a corner, our most reliable tackler at corner, is the difference between that 90 yard drive and us getting the ball at midfield. It's unfortunate, but those how slim the margins can be on defense.

This WVU offense is pretty good, the fact they didn't get into the end zone until the end of the half is remarkable especially how our D screwed themselves with penalties.

I'm generally a fan of the aggressive game management calls (going on 4th, trying to score before half), so I can't really complain too much. However, I just don't really trust this offense to risk scoring opps in regards to not taking the FG. I refuse to be upset that we tried to score with 2 minutes left in the ahlf.

I think this is a fair point, but the right throw was there. The RB sat down in the zone with plenty of room to get up field and get that first down. That drive should have been continued but Wells was too committed to the shallow crosser.

Players who were solid last year have massively regressed.
And four games in, there's little observable improvement.
People smarter than me can comment on technique and scheme, but all of it is currently changing. And the fact that the first several recruits to commit to VT in Pry's tenure were linemen tells me that they know this is a position group that needs overhauling to play the way Pry and Rudolph want them to play. Anyone calling for firings after 4 games under a new regime with hodge-podge recruits (Fuente seriously cratered this program) is being unreasonable.
Ehh...when I watch low-level G5 Programs that field competent OL, I have trouble with the "talent just isn't there" argument.
There is a difference between a dominant OL and an adequate one (which is a reasonable expectation at VT). What we have is porous and putrid.
Scheme and technique changes, a strength and conditioning program that has been exposed as a joke since 2016, and you expect Rudolph to work miracles in one offseason. This year is going to suck. Own that and expect pain. We aren't going to win many games. Let's see how things develop over the season, the next recruiting class, and onward.
It sucks to lose to a rival, and if that's what happens tonight (very likely), we just have to own that we didn't meet the bar. Fuel for improvement. We aren't good. We can be, with the right coaching and players in place.
They are learning a new system too and might not be the best players for Rudolph's style. He didn't recruit any of these guys.

Our OL has me completely dumbfounded. On running plays they just stand up and rarely even try to block anyone. They just stand around and look at each other (called it selling tickets last game). If our plan is to let the first wave through, and block the second level, great...do it. But we're not. We just stand up and watch. At least move your feet and screen the guy in front of you. Hell just pass block on every play (whether running or pass)...at least that way you're giving the RB a chance to get to the LOS.

He has playmakers but as an OC has shown in 4 games he doesn't have the talent to hold that position. He might not have Alabama level talent but he absolutely has enough to be 4-0 right now
I don't think it's fair to draw that conclusion, yet. I don't think he has the OL to run the scheme he wants to run. Look back at Penn State in 2019 and 2020. They were run first. We don't have the OL right now to do that. Pry has even said we're going to be run first. We all knew this was going to be a multi year rebuild and for the most part the staff is working with G5 level talent.
What playmakers? There's literally one 4-star on offense (King). The next highest recruiting rating for any offensive skill player is .8750.
We're not looking for Alabama level talent, but a handful of 4-stars at RB/WR, plus depth on the line would do wonders.
They aren't gonna do shit until they address the OL. Sure it's great to have a bunch of 6'6" 300+lbs guys but that doesnt matter if they are a bunch of passive pussy footing weanies, Until they can recruit some OL that can actually move someone off the ball this offense is gonna struggle,

We're out-athleted at most every position, but it's troubling that we've made not a single adjustment defensively
I'm much more concerned about the lack of adjustments on offense. The defense is just gassed at this point from getting thrown right back on the field. The defensive gameplan hasn't been bad, and 23 points allowed should be enough to win 8/9 out of 10 college football games in 2022.
This is the lowest offensive point total anyone has held WVU to so far this year.
Unfortunately this game will kill Lane Stadium for the rest of the season. A close, hard fought loss and you keep credibility with the fans. A blowout loss where we did absolutely nothing on offense and racked up 120+ yards in penalties and the fans simply wont continue to invest their time, energy and money.
I'm pretty sure based on what I've seen every game I've been too, we reached that point long ago!

We don't have nearly talent level we'd like, but damn it we definitely have enough talent to be 4-0 right now. Undisciplined play, turnovers, etc. are the little things keeping us from that right now.

A lot of people were amped about the Joe Rudolph hire, but I'm just not seeing it. I think there's a reason Wisconsin's fanbase wanted him gone. This OL is as soft a unit I've seen.

Rudolph failed at addressing the portal in the offseason, so that is on him. But I'm willing to see what he can do when he *eventually* gets guys that fit his scheme on the field.
