UPDATED: Reigning ACC Champions unveil new look for 2022 basketball season

Of all the designs we've worn, this is certainly one of them.... Not really sure what to make of the design on the trim, is that supposed to be Hokie Tracks?

That said, I'm intrigued with the number font. Maybe a preview of football going with the 1999 design full time again next year?

Nov. 4th Update: There is now a White version as well

Looks pretty clearly lifted from the Corps crest.

Which is both cool, but also a super obscure design element to pick to include a reference to the VTCC.

Looks correct.

Yeah that definitely looks like it. Never would have guessed that had you not pointed out, so thanks.

Knowing this, I actually kind of like it? Obscure for sure, but it is something that gives us a bit of a design flair that actively ties in the Corps to our brand. I'm not sure this exact treatment is best, but there's definitely potential here to create a design element that works for us in the same way UNC has argyle.

Right on both counts.

And oh, what it could have been. Had they been turkey tracks, I'd have been all over that. As it is.....meh.

It's a Dennis Miller on MNF level reference.

What is the significance/meaning to the christmas tree and 3 dots in the VTCC crest?

I don't know about the specifics of why how it was originally chosen, but it's an ermine.

Ermine (heraldry)

At least we didn't go with the little spermy lookin one

I'm still figuring this out.

Take a look at this link: https://vtcc.vt.edu/brand/logo_shield.html

Looks like the meaning of the ermine is quality.

Symbolism in the shield
Red: courage and determination
Sword: military training
Gold hilt: quality
Ermine (pattern of shapes): quality

You learn something new every day...if you try.

they...kinda look the same, aside from the little orange swoop on the pants there

Chicago maroon is our color. If the uniform isn't that color I dont want it.

It looks closer to Chicago Maroon than many other things I've seen come out of the Athletic Dept. Chicago Maroon is on the purpler side of maroon, so......checks out?

I'd wait until we see them on TV. Much of our creative department has a knack for screwing up our colors in photo/video.

Needs to be 2003 night game vs Miami maroon.

Seconded. Sharpest maroon we ever wore

I dont 'hate' the jersey.

It's just that it looks too much like a track uniform

They'll really get after ya

That is a great way to put it. Very much looks like a track uniform.

In general, I don't like basketball jerseys with a logo instead of the wordmark. Just something about it that seems off, and being a track uniform is it. This same jersey with 'VIRGINIA TECH' instead of the VT on the chest would be great.

I really like the tweak to the jersey number. Same font we currently use but with the double outline we used on the 90s era football jerseys. I would absolutely love it if we went this direction with football next year and used the same treatment (current font with the same double outline, orange numbers on the shoulders).

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

in 10 years we'll have the same colors as Clemson

I mean, I feel like every year we get a little bit closer to purple with our "maroon"

Onward and upward

that was my first thought. "they're.....purple"

Maroon is an awesome color. We should stick with that.

Let's go with TKP Maroon

Initial reactions I saw on twitter last night were very not good towards the new jerseys. I think people really hated the shorts. I'm not a fan of the orange stripe on the shorts and the VT on both thigh--it just feels like too much and the stripe makes it too asymmetrical for me.

Totally agree with the VT on both sides. Nothing about these got me excited. That said, uniforms aside, I am very excited for basketball season!

I actually like the stripe. There's not much else to comment on other than the maroon being off in my opinion.

I guess we'll see if this means VT is sticking with Nike. You'd think Whit could get them to fix our color palette at least in a restructured deal.

Edit: ๐Ÿคžthe color being off is just a bad filter.

I like the round basketball stripe on the shorts but not the VT logo on the chest. Would much rather it have Virginia Tech on the front or a script Hokies

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Either a filter is making these look more purple than maroon, or Nike's child labor sweatshops must be running out of chicago maroon threads.... either way, we gotta find a way out of this current Nike deal ASAP. It's pretty clear we're an afterthought to them.

Fucking love it

Why we cannot simply stick to the school colors is beyond me. Sure, it is good to add design elements (trim size, font size, trim color, etc.) but this playing with the colors doesn't (and never will) sit well with me.

I mean it's not like we are trying to develop or decide on the school colors. They are known. They are Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange.

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

These are the school colors, we officially switched to them in 2016

There is something a little funky going on with the lighting on these pics, but we standardized our colors to be what Nike uses at that time.

Virginia Tech Branding

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Then I am very confused. From the Virginia Tech Website

https://brand.vt.edu/identity/color.html

The Virginia Tech color palette has two layers: primary and secondary. Our primary palette will always include Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange, supplemented by Yardline White and Hokie Stone as neutrals. These colors should be present in most marketing and communications materials. The secondary colors should be used sparingly as accents or to represent different moods.

Honestly confused. If we switched to different colors in 2016 why does the color guide still clearly say Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange? Is there a new Chicago Maroon? And how do you standardize a color to what Nike uses. I would think Chicago Maroon is the standard, not what Nike's interpretation of the color is.

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

They kept the names but tweaked the shading. The colors that are used on the VT website, and are registered through Collegiate Licensing are the ones that we use on our athletic gear. The maroon was tweaked to be more blue than red and the orange was made brighter/bolder. In both cases, that tweak aligned ourselves to the colors that Nike had been providing us in at least football since the 90s.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Thanks for hanging in there and explaining. I understand what they did but it is disingenuous to call it the same name when "tweaks" were made.

In my mind (too much of an engineer I guess) a standard is a standard.

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

Name isn't a standard in colors. That's why they specify things like the Pantone, RGB, hex, etc.

Free Hugh

interestingly enough, the guy who invented the underpinnings of Pantone color communication was a Hokie. He basically developed ground-up a system for strategically managing and communicating color, which was licensed to X-Rite Pantone and later became PantoneLive.

I had the pleasure of working with him at my previous job for a little while, an absolute gold mine of info and education.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Did they accidentally send out Clemsons new unis ?

I'm hearing this is a 3rd alternate, BTW. We will still have the white, gray, and orange jerseys with "Virginia Tech" or Hokies on them.

Didn't we have a black jersey with the VT on it last year? This must be the replacement for it, then.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I think that ended with the Buzz era. I don't think the men have worn black under Young. The women have though

Fair enough. I only get to see a handful of our games down here, so I wasn't sure.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

The women's black jersey is one of my favorite VT sports pieces right now. The grey Hokiestone pattern going down the sides is slick and IMO it's a better font choice than the black unis the men wore under Buzz.

I wish the men's hoops team would wear something similar since we do in fact have a Black Out game every year.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

I would be fine with getting rid of the gray version. just looks dull to me. Have a white, an orange, and a maroon. Done.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

At least we're taking our minds off of football for a moment

It's fine as an alternate but I wouldn't want it to replace our standard maroons. Personally I'd love to see us run with four jerseys: the standard orange, maroon, gray, and black (for our black out game at least). I don't think we need both a white and a gray. If we're feeling spicy and do want to add an alternate some sort of historical replica VT jersey would be fun for a couple games.

It's fine. It's good as a third or alternate, I wouldn't like it as a primary. Not a fan of big logos like that on the front of basketball jerseys, but the white numbers on maroon is a huge improvement over orange on maroon.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

I have no problem with the jerseys. The pants are... a lot, though.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

They're...fine. I like the font and the short design is solid though maybe a tad excessive, but the logo dead center is a miss. It just doesn't work on a basketball jersey in that placement. If you kept everything the same but replaced the center logo with a script (cursive) "Hokies" or "Hokies" in the same font as the numbers, these would pop a lot more.

But why is it two colors of maroon?

Best duos in Hokie history: Hall & Adibi, 3rd & Tyrod, Georgia & Liz

Okay so I'm not the only one seeing this. I just attributed to bad light or my (not great) eyesight, but it looks like the maroon on the shoulders is a touch different than the maroon on the rest of the jersey and I don't know why.

It's even more obvious in the video posted below.

I think they'll look totally fine on TV, but more importantly:

The men need to bring back the script Hokies uniforms like the women have done.

I have a lineup of what the ideal bball uniforms would look like and this would 100% be the white jerseys. Maybe with a fighting gobbler, TV logo, or state plus Tech logo on the shorts. There would also be a gray, maroon, and orange jerseys that would look similar to our current threads.

Maybe with a fighting gobbler, TV logo, or state plus Tech logo on the shorts.

I've been begging them (in my mind) to use the alt/historical logos more for the basketball team. The Fighting Gobbler especially would work well in some designs for basketball. The Gobbler as the center court logo would look pretty damn sharp too.

There's a couple other teams, notably Kansas and Michigan State, that do throwback style jerseys with oversized logos on the shorts. I think for us if we're going with a throwback script you also go with a throwback logo.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

An additional tease.

Not gonna lie, the outline on the numbers does look real good

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Honestly, it looks like something we would have worn back in the Jamon Gordon days. Like it would be way over sized and frumpy looking.

Another pic

Edit: Couple more:

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

So...... Yeah

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

i am not a fan

Danny is always open

Need to see them in action, but I kind of agree.

I do like the outlined numbers, though. Big fan if that rolls out to the other sports to be a modern flair on the 90s branding we had.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I like them okay I think, not the worst I've seen. The Hokie script unis the girls wear are by far the best basketball threads we have between the 2 teams though.

I cannot agree with this more. I absolutely loved this look when we came into the ACC in 2004:

As an aside, ignoring the pajama cut of this baggy style, I loved the text and number arrangement from the 2005-07 era jerseys. The thin 'VIRGINIA TECH' works very well

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Agreed. Having a logo instead of wording on a basketball uniform just looks weird.

Why don't our socks match? They look pink vs the white shoes.

We put the K in Kwality

it genuinely looks like the maroon bled onto the white fabric in the wash

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Was hoping the whites might be a different design from the Maroon.

I don't get the "triple VT" design...if you are going to have VT on the chest, have something alternate on the shorts.

It just seems very...redundant.

Jerseys tonight are fire

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I want to buy one of those.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Huuuuge improvement...this should absolutely be the primary design.

Because it's good and wildly popular, I give it 0% chance of ever being seen again.

Ya might be wrong on that one

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Well, I guess we are a basketball school now. Gotta at least please that crowd. But seriously, good look.

Continuing the theme...

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Nothing says VT like grey VT on a grey jersey. Not a fan.

You joke, but I've actually always wanted us to ditch the military appreciation white-out or white effect game and do grey on black with a bunch of Corp references.

That could work if there are things that are clearly VT - some orange trim, some hokie stone. These look generic.

I'd support this 100%. I never really thought we executed the white out /white effect very well and your idea sounds very cool.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Counterpoint: nothing says VT like a giant ass VT

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Just gonna keep saying it, that giant VT is terrible. It's size and placement just doesn't work on a basketball jersey. Color scheme is fine for a one off alternate but it'd look so much better with a script "Hokies"

Not gonna lie, these uniforms have grown on me.

Still prefer the the text over logo, but I don't hate these.
