Let's Go...
Hokies!
HOKIES!
Let's do this! It's time for the hard work and efforts of these young men to pay off and steal a win.
Give me all the breaks going our way for Homecoming celebration and a big W over The U
All maroon everything 👀
Anyone know what RSN it is in DC? Might need to ask the bar to put it on
What bar are folks at?
Unclear yet, clothes shopping first then a beer garden lol
MASN
Fam!
Not to derail the thread at all...but watching GameDay and hearing Peyton say, "They need something Alabama-proof...his name is Hendon Hooker." And then listening to Corso and Herbie both go on to praise him as well before Corso puts on Smokey's headgear...
*Insert hokiebird_pain.jpeg* 😩
Cuts a Hokie fan to the quick.
Hope everyone is able to find the game! Let's go Hokies!
Ballysports sucks a dirty asshole
But I am able to watch the game...
It's on MASN in Shenandoah Valley
Not on tv in Roanoke? 😡😩
All Maroon Everything!
Pain
Not on TV in cary nc :/
Blacked out, can't see it. Boo.
Maybe thats a good thing.
Pulled it up bootleg and first thing I see is Moss fumbling at mid field... fun!!!
Just had to download a VPN to get this on ESPN3. ExpressVPN took about 5 mins to register and get working for anyone who was blacked out.
Heard on radio Miami completed a deep pass against Murray. Why in the blue hell is he still playing? Tired of Fu leftovers stinking up the joint. Get the young guys in there with reps.
He actually was playing decent coverage. It was just a perfect throw and a great catch
Dude has had years to make an impact and consistently gets burned. Get some young guys on the field to develop. He isn't going to be here next year. So ridiculous.
Boy Miami did whatever they wanted to us on that drive. Our defense had nothing
Great job coaching staff accept the penalty to make it 2-17 instead of 3-12. This is stuff a middle schooler would know not to do. We're not getting any better any time soon
Yes, because that would have mattered when they hit a 30 yard pass on the next play
I hear you, but perhaps they threw that play on 2-and-17 because they knew they had a 3rd down if they didn't connect. On 3-and-12, maybe they call a different play?
2nd and 17 might change the play call, it's a valid point
It's really not, though
I'm not arguing with you today
It's 100% a valid point. It was a bad coaching decision, regardless of what happened after it.
This staff doesn't have the benefit of the doubt on these things yet.
I mean yes it's a valid point but but that point is ultimately pointless once it's not an option.
A velociraptor could have run into the field and eaten Mario but we'll never know in less you have a way of viewing alternate universes.
I simply mean, that if you look at what is more statistically likely...getting 12 yards on 1 play vs getting 17 yards on 2 plays. The odds of getting 8.5 yards on any given play are most certainly better than getting 12 on any given play.
No need for such extreme examples, it's just math.
Given how the rest of the game went, yes it likely would not have mattered. That still doesn't mean it was a good decision.
Isnt it better to compare the odds of getting 8.5 yards on two consecutive plays vs getting 8.5 yards on any given play
It doesn't matter what happened after. That's basic ass coaching. If you don't understand that you're just as dumb as the coaching staff
Yeah, I was wonder WTF was going on. I would have declined the 5 yard penalty that allowed them to replay the down.
Wouldn't of mattered either way when we give up 42 on the next play.....
Also, the penalty put them out of FG range so it was smart to take it IMO
They were kicking a FG from the 37? Lol what, no the coaches just have no idea what they're doing. The sooner we admit we were wrong and wipe the slate clean and get a competent staff the better
I think you should get off the computer or phone or whatever you're on for the rest of the day pal
Y'all need to wake up to reality. I'm not gonna sugarcoat the bullshit like y'all will. I criticize the team because I donate heavily and have every right to. If you like losing go pick a new school, because I don't
Whit would agree with you. If you donate heavily, you have a voice!
Y'all 2 are such a lovely couple!
Just stating put your money where your mouth is. If you donate so heavily call Whit! Don't know why I'm getting downvoted.
This is advice that could be heeded by a lot of people on here this year
Glad to see you're back giving constructive thoughts after last week spewing nonsense.... /s
Glad to see the team still playing the same way with 0 improvements....
I mean I guess I could take Pry's job I couldn't do any worse than him, but VT would have to pay accordingly
Yes random internet person you are a D1 caliber coach! I bet your couch has heard a lot of great play calls.
Give it a rest.
Glad you got your leg 🤣 Y'all come here to convince people VT is still "fine" and things will " be okay" and won't face the reality. Our team is shit and only going to continue to get worse as long as we have fans like this that are content with losing.
I haven't said otherwise, it's you spewing nonsense about how you're a D1 caliber coach. Grow up.
Pry isn't a D1 caliber coach either that's the problem.. lol y'all are blind.
Dude, go for a walk
Agreed. Go do something else. You not emotionally prepared for the rest of the season if you're acting like this 3 minutes into the game
Ahh, we're in the phase where criticizing the coach is blasphemy.
There are issues that extend to coaching right now. They have nothing to do with the past regime.
Pry is marching us to a 2-10 team which I have never seen in my lifetime.
The whole schick that this team has to burn it all down to rebuild is for losers.
Fucking hell
Exactly, so many people will give the guy a free pass that's not warranted. You can either coach or can't. Nobody has a problem giving Pry time if we see IMPROVEMENTS.. you can't just say well these aren't his guys.. still should be better than a 2 win team losing to ODU and getting annihilate by UNC and WVU among others
Like giving Temple their first FBS win in years? Or losing to JMU?
Which of those teams had 2 wins?
Temple only had 2 JMU only had 6. So you really hanging your hat on that.
I'm saying which of those VT teams that lost those games only had 2 wins. The point is we may have lost a game like that before but our team was overall much better, wasn't it the JMU year we made the orange bowl? Thats really what my point was
Those Tech teams weren't having this conversation at this point in the season
No matter how good or bad of a coach Pry is we're stuck with him for at least a few years. Doesn't hurt to try and trust that he'll turn things around for at the first year or so.
Few people are saying that he won't.
Doesn't mean that he isn't maximizing our possibility of success now.
This coaching staff is proving they can't be flexible with the talent that have.
Offense moved ball well before fumble. Getting the ball to Malachi and Wright. Promising start other than the TO.
Defense looks like overmatched by Miami WR talent. Going to be a long day folks
NO pressure on the QB. It's going to be a long game if we let him stand back and survey the field.
Yeah, so far wishing I wasn't able to find the game.
The good: All maroon everything unis are lit!! The offense looked good.
The bad: The entire defense... every single piece.
Tough start. Hit a big play only to fumble. Get them in 3rd and 12 only to get beat by an exceptional one handed catch.
Hopefully we fight to stay in it like last week.
This is a game, much like the UNC game, where our individual talent, or lack thereof, is going to be a significant issue. We simply don't have a full P5 roster and it is profoundly clear.
When you've recruited like a middling G5 team for 3 years don't be surprised when you get middling G5 results on the field
But are we recruiting better now than the last 3 years?
It remains to be seen, but I am worried.
G5 learning to be P5, position coaches learning to be coordinators, coordinator learning to be HC. Just calling it like it is.
Have to take your chances and bring pressure and hope to rattle VanDyke.
Letting him sit back and pick this secondary apart is a recipe for 49-13
Also, I don't think Brion Murray should take one more snap as a Hokie unless we are severely depleted by injury. He's a marginal FCS player at best and has no business on the field in a P5 game.
Is it too early for a 3 and out?

If football was a game of phucking up on drive keeping plays, game changing plays, etc., our Hokies would have racked up multiple national championships over the past 30 years. For the love of God, why do we do these things over and and over and over and over and over??????
Becuase we don't have a talented roster and it's going to take a while to build one up?
Dude. I'm not talking about our current talent, I'm talking about fumbling on important plays/drives. Yes, every team has them but our beloved Hokies have been particularly good at it for decades.
I wouldn't worry about that incredibly easy first TD by Miami, that was just the universe balancing itself. The play before our fumble should've been an easy pick 6 for Miami, Wells stared down his slant/in route so bad a middle school football player could've made a jump on it. Pure luck the Miami guy dropped it, corrected by our defense being shredded. For those of you who are blacked out on coverage for this game, thank your lucky stars and go do something outside on this beautiful fall day.
Wells is who he is at this point - a QB who stars down WRs; goes to his primary read no matter what; and someone who has zero touch on shorter throws. He certainly has some arm talent on those long passes, but he's not going to consistently move the ball down the field unfortunately.
The game is blacked out on Hulu live and ESPN. anyone having issues?
I'm watching on ESPN in the Pittsburgh area.
I've already taken the kid to get a haircut, IHOP, pumpkin patch, bouncy houses, and a hayride so far today...I know I should be doing something better with my day since the game is blacked out here but I'm running out of options at this point. 😅
Sounds like you could have done all that and STILL watched the game, if it were available.
And with the seemingly prevailing voice in this thread reiterating literally the same point over and over...I think I'll check out on the game thread as well. I think I've read the same thing five different ways so far. 🤦
If we were blaming Fuente for seeing the same mistakes over and over, I think it's fair to do the same with this staff. I like Pry, but I don't see any improvements week to week at all. If anything it looks like the defense has gotten remarkably worse throughout the year from tackling to fundamentals.
Is this the only reason you're here?
I mean, there are other things to do on a nice day.
We know your opinion on this coaching staff.
Y'all have become content with losing. We're the new Duke
Go for a walk or something
Van Dyke is about to break a single game passing record
At least he isn't a backup.
He has been spot on with his passes.
Pry has a real problem. Our DBs are not good enough to play man. And they don't have the situational awareness to play zone.
You're absolutely right. We were told for years that the players Fuente brought in we're not good enough so I'm not sure why some are so frustrated to see that playing out now.
I know rhetorical, but it's because we're living with it now. Few people can actually handle and/or process the reality even when they've been warned about it. Just like my 4 year old...
As a father of a 4 year old, take my well earned leg
If I could make it 100, I would. Kids are psychopaths
Yeah, this is the "damned if you do - damned if you don't" situation that Pry is in. He can't send pressure and play single or zero coverage because we don't have the athletes on the back end. We can't play zone because we don't have the horses up front to generate pressure.
I think Pry has moved the recruiting needle a bit, but it's only a small bit. The only hope with last years class and this years class is that he is getting targeted recruits that he can develop for a specific position. Outside of that, we are in real trouble from a talent standpoint.
that was clear holding on Dax
And the FINALLY call holding.
Not the first time I've seen it.
2nd and 26 and they get the first down
Glad they finally started calling holding.
That may affect Van Dyke's completions a bit. Edit: well, maybe not...
2nd and 26...
First down Miami
lol they convert on 2nd and 26, this is like me playing ncaa 14
LOL, anyone who stays is a glutton for punishment. I have no idea how you stomach this mess.
Lane will be empty after halftime
maybe mid 2nd quarter at this rate
Nah, its homecoming.
Don't worry, I'm already dead inside
Anyone else having an awesome time watching a black screen every 10 seconds on the Bally sports app?
Whose ready for a hard fought three and out
I'm out of here today. Emotions running high and too much downvoting. I think we all know how this one is going to end. Glad I can't watch. Everyone have a great afternoon!
Enjoy your day!
It's a nice one.
Sadly 10-0 and the game already feels over. This team just doesn't have players, and at least for right now doesn't have the coaching staff to put together a plan to use what they do have.
TVD on pace for about 600 yards today
Small victory there. At least we held them to a field goal. Although I don't know why anyone would kick against us with Miami's offense.
They'd have looked stupid if they went for it and didn't get it.
Also, would have given VT a huge adrenaline boost.
Can't watch this week so I'm reading the comments here.
French touched on this with teams scheming to have Dax lined up against a good receiver in the slot. Is there no switches they can make to have Tisdale or a safety drop down to cover them instead. He can't be expected as a Mike to be 20-30 yards downfield covering a receiver yet there he is asked to do it every week.
If French can pick that up, why can't our staff?! Especially with Tisdale back, you'd think they'd not put Dax in that position but...
Yay! Not a three and out.
Ugh... Wells is not a good QB. Staff needs to try and find another option this offseason. And that really sucks because we've been sort of a QB carousel of late.
Yeah, since...
Hooker.
Damn.
whose the last 4* + QB we've recruited? I guess Hendon Hooker and Quincy Patterson. We need to get another blue chip recruit at QB, but who would wanna come play for this dumpster fire
Need a QB AND some receivers.
Seems to me Wells is getting decent protection, though. I think the situation will get better, but not quickly.
Billy Wiles QB at Clemson (#17) from Stonebridge HS is looking to transfer. I spoke to his father last weekend. He is considering the Hokies. Wants immediate playing time. I of course pitched us hard. My fraternity brother is a HNWI, big time donor. Going to reach out to him to see if this kid is on our staff's radar.
I'd say immediate playing time is on the table.
I wish their QB would stare down his receiver so our defense knew where the play was going.
I'm not watching the game. Not going to ruin my birthday. Guessing I made the right call.
Happy Birthday. Hope you are doing something you'll enjoy more than I am enjoying watching this game.
Thanks. I'm eating ice cream and reading TKP. Guess that is pretty good.
Happy birthday, man!
This is Miami and we just don't have any fight in us. I think I'm just going to go into the office and rearrange hanging file folders.
I may get some chores done today, after all...
Sigh.
Refs are trying to keep us in it
that was all shoulder though?
I guess in this instance doesn't matter, didn't know that
Was Peoples ejected? ESPN play by play doesn't say and I can't watch.
yup he's done
It was a terrible call in my opinion. So soft.
Dax abused in coverage...again. That targeting was BS though, sucks for Peoples.
If that TE doesn't fall down, he takes that hit to the body or to the hip. What was Peoples supposed to do?
Well that sucks to lose Peoples on the "targeting" call.
Unfortunate targeting, but I think the only way this secondary can get materially worse is if you put me out there.
Crowd does NOT like that, this is going to get ugly
That's all folks. Peoples is one of better dbs. And we don't have a replacement.
Good lord we really have been spoiled the last 30 plus years as a fan base. A single bad season and people are burning down the entire program. We are one of less than a handful of schools that have never had a truly bad season in that time. Can't even give this staff and new HC half a season to try and make changes even. Enjoy the good plays, look for positives each game and be happy we have football to watch at all.
A single bad season?
I'd say the bigger issue is that we've been seeing this coming for awhile now, and people are pissed it's now here. You can't really blame them, VT has not been fun football to watch for way more than this one specific season. This just happens to be the worst by far.
And I'd love to know the "bright side" stuff you are seeing game to game, because I sure as heck am not. There is nothing good in a season where we lose to:
UNC
Pitt
WVU
Probably Miami
Probably Duke
Probably GT given how they've been playing
Probably UVA *barf*
Oh...and ODU
All this during a time where college football is becoming increasingly polarized due to TV money. We picked a bad time to hit a relative nadir as a program. People can be upset, doesn't mean they are spoiled. They can also say "well we've got the coach to turn it around". I don't know that to be true anymore than they do. Maybe? All I can discuss now is on field results, and they are bad
Bright sides: young DB's looking like they aren't scared, Thomas, Wright, K Smith best walk-on since Sam Rogers.
I don't agree but that is what they are calling now and there is nothing a defender can do to avoid it in that position.
Targeting is still a BS call, the way it's defined/called/used.
That's certainly a win for the defense.
And backspin on the punt to stay out of the end zone. We can't get a break.
Maybe the BS targeting will rally the defense beyond forcing a punt. We need some turnovers
Crazy thing is, as bad as it's been, we're still very much in it
Canes being undisciplined is partly keeping us in it
Canes being Canes
Freshman Braelin Moore is in
How did we pick up a 6 yard false start to go from 3&4 to 3&10?
The commentators are ridiculous.
"I guess that was PI"?
It absolutely was.
boom boom play, but so was the "targeting" call
If an offensive player changing their head level last second results in a targeting, being out of bounds right before a hit should be a late hit...
No late hit?!
Um.... Targeting flag. No??? Srsly tho....
THAT isn't targeting?
They need to go back to the drawing board on how they call that.
Another baffling 3rd down play call
Ngl Clements needs to be one of those players pry talks to after the year to go too the portal. He looks so lost out there every week and has a lot of backbreaking penalties
What happened to tackling?
I guess the technique still needs some work. Rome wasn't built in a day.
I mean we have never been particularly good at it
Just tuning in now
Wells with 56 yds vs 179 for Van Dyke
Big yikes
Was hopeful that Tisdale would help more on D today.
Got a feeling this is the week the 'not shutout' streak ends
I really hope not. Last time I was worried was also in Lane against Miami, we ended up with a late TD/
Don't put that evil on us.
We'll probably get a fg in garbage time lol
we've never been shut out in Lane?
Too easy for them, too hard for us. That is my in depth technical analysis of this game.
EDIT: WAY WAY too easy for them, WAY WAY too hard for us. After further in depth technical analysis
Why is Garbutt dropping out to cover the RB in the red zone? This is shocking
Whatever you say, coach
Ahh yeah sorry forgot about the no criticism on a team message board police my bad. What a loser
I'm just gonna guess you're one of the people that wears a mask inside your car by yourself
And personal insults are against the CGs
If that hurt your feelings it's definitely a yes. 🤣🤣
You're talking your way to getting ban today pal
We've just learned it's only okay to criticize stuff that y'all say is okay to criticize right? Lol
No you're acting like a jackass. I legit hope you keep acting like one cause seeing you get the heave ho would give me a good laugh today😂
If getting banned from an imaginary site is something that would derail you. You need to ask yourself more questions. If the admins decide to ban me for voicing my opinion, then they can choose to ban people for using free speech. That's up to them
You're not being downvoted for your opinion, you're being downvoted because you're acting like an ass
^
Legit just get off here and listen to some music. That's what I'm doing during the game
Y'all just want to argue for the sake of arguing, I don't know if your bored or what? I'm only here to vent about this shitty team I have to see on the field. If you don't like that then don't come to the game thread.
See my comment above. Go listen to some music and have some fun cause this tech game is obviously not fun for you. Hell I'll recommend a album even tho idk your music type. Lateralus by Tool. I feel like you need a album that has a mix of serenity but also some anger as well 😂
Wait...this site isn't real? Does that mean VT football being terrible is also only in my head?
The ole nothing is real and this is a simulation thinking. I like it😂
How many 1 handed catches do they have today?
Dax in coverage...
Van Dyke having a "pitch and catch" day.
I mean, anything he throws up might be caught. I don't even know if the passes are that great, but there are big enough gaps to toss it out there and see if a receiver gets it.
Edit: OK, that last pass was spot on.
Unfortunately this is the definition of this transmission year. Better times times come in the year(s) to come.
I knew this season would be ugly, but I didn't think it would look quite like this. Outside of about 35 or so minutes last week against Pitt we haven't competed at a P5 level at all this season.
lol we're making struggling QBs look like Heisman candidates
I don't know that I would call TVD a struggling QB. He threw for nearly 500 yards last week against UNC.
Wasn't he an All ACC pick?
I thought they said he was struggling this season
Hokies are yet to cross the 50...
These are good throws but good God, how many times can Dak get beat on that route. Feels like it's the fifth or sixth time this year and third for a TD.
It is what it is this season unfortunately.
Dax is good at run defense. Pass coverage on the other hand
There is no push by this line
Gotta love the offensive gameplan.
Find what doesn't work..stick with it again and again.
Guess I'm glad I can't watch this one. Lol
Yes, today you are blessed.
i was resentful; but not for long
Listening to it isn't any better
Finally got a 3rd and 1.
Gotta count your blessings.
Miami and penalties. Some things never change.
Wow, 26 yard play!
Grant Wells has the pocket awareness of a tackling dummy
We crossed the 50! Let's go!
*pours another beer*
Cant even watch the game in Richmond. Listening but this sounds so bad. I think I'll root for Hooker and Tennessee the rest of the day. He did say Knoxville was the best place in college football on Gameday. That hurt
The announcers finally got Moore's name right!
For as bad as the D plays at times the scheme at least has players in the right place most of the time. We can't help the talent issues atm. However, the same cannot be said of the offense. It looks like a discombobulated mess at every single level on almost every play.
There's an incredible talent gap on offense too though. Spelling a true freshman at guard, have 1 competent WR, and a G5 qb
Even the TV commentators are throwing shade on Wells now
Was hoping the O would build off last week.
At this point I'll call it a win if we can keep from getting shut out
3rd and 10 and we give up a first down - sigh.
lol converting on 3rd and 10 by running
Help me, Jerry Kill
We may have the worst 3rd Down defense in the history of Football
just put in all the young players to get in game experience, this is a lost cause
I feel like we're being heckled by the commentators.
Can you blame them? We haven't done anything for them to talk about
Fair
It's a stop!!!
3rd and 10 and Miami gets 15....At least the team is playing complimentary football like Pry wanted .
Maybe we can block the punt? Maybe? Please. . .
I hope they make some great halftime adjustments on O and D.
Is this the day our not getting shut out streak ends?
I think it might be
I forgot there was a streak we still had.
I don't like the sound of that.
Typically I don't care when the announcers get on us, especially when we're playing poorly, but oh my god this color commentator is incredibly grating for whatever reason. Maybe just because this game is so frustrating.
Regardless, he can eat a big ol' bag of dicks.
Enter Sadman
We are going to make ESPN's bottom 10.... Each week I dread clicking the link. It was Oklahoma at 5 last week but I have a tremendous fear we are going to take their place this week.
If we are in it we won't be 5, because #5 is supposed to be a tongue in cheek joke. If we make it, it's on merit
You are right....unfortunately. Here's a leg.
That is actually worse.
I'm not sure we shouldn't be splitting time with the Seniors and the Freshmen at this point. If the seniors on the field are doing their jobs and have earned their spot I definitely support playing them. But everything is so broken on both sides of the ball that we should really be looking for development at this point. We aren't winning another game this season (we won't beat UVA with this team) so you might as well be playing for next season.
At this point, I think we should be playing the underclassmen as much as we can just to see what we have going forward.
I am afraid Pry knows what he has and does not see any point in playing the younger players because they are never going to be contributors.
And if that's the case, then EVERYONE in here needs to know that we have a 3 year, minimum, rebuild ahead of us while we completely replace all of Fuentes players. And that's because there are limits on the number of players you can force out in a given year.
We don't have time for a 3 year rebuild if the intermediate years look like this. This season repeated to next year is a program killer. Repeated again might as well be an SMU style death penalty.
We are surrounded by teams on the rise in a conference that is drowning and regional rivals that are getting better. If we can't climb out soon (less than 2 years) I think it's basically over.
yup; this roster is a teardown. use the rest of the year to see which parts and pieces you want to salvage; then open all the exits
Luckily, guys, we've got plenty of other good football to watch today. Don't stress yourselves
No Devin Leary against us on Thursday, so we got that goin for us
To be fair, he could probably throw for 400 on us with his other arm
Looks like the homecoming crowd left at halftime.
Good call.
North End Zone is empty to start the 3rd
Looks like maybe 100 people left
Wow
I think that's for the best
student section looking bleak right now
Don't blame them. Looking at the stats there is zero chance we come back given our demonstrated inability to make adjustments in the 2nd half.
Program looking bleak right now.
Delane is going to be good
Delane with a nice play on the ball to start the 3rd.
Defense fired up on that first series and get a 3 and out.
That was a TD
Sigh.
I mean FFS make the goddamn catch
Lofton 😵💫
jeez Lofton again
hit him in the hands
Alot of people love blaming wells for everything. That hit lofton right in the chest😣
I'm done with this WR group as well. Unload the bench, give these young guys some burn.
Isn't he one of the young-ish ones?
He is, but he hasn't shown much of anything this season.
Let's see Moss and Wright
I've seen enough of Lofton. Play some true freshman
Can't drop a walk in TD
Lofton disagrees with you
I don't care if he fumbled, I'd rather see Moss than Lofton...what does Lofton do in Practice to keep a starting job
I believe it was the fresh TE Wright that fumbled. But haven't seen much from Moss today, definitely surprised on that, we need to go to him more. Can't be only Caleb Smith every time
Thought it Moss, but I literally had just found the game...just checked you are right, it was Wright
Mallory out for UM should help some. He was torching Dax
Maybe since the students are gone, Miami will feel like they are at home and play accordingly
False start - everyone but the snapper.
I picked a good day to go camping
And I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
Nice tackle
11 penalties on UM. They are trying to keep us in the game.
Back spin on another punt.
What a horrible 3rd down call. Run a route short of the sticks against a vastly athletically superior team.
Don't know if that was the call or just what Malachi did but either way, it wasn't good.
Stop doing routes on 3rd down in front of the sticks
I believe it was the infamous Scott Loeffler who once proliferated that, on 3rd down, not all the routes can go past the sticks.
"Virginia is for punters."
** sad gobbles **
Sounds like King is done for the day. Not good.
I don't mind those play-calls tbh. Gallo moves like an 18 wheeler. Cut upfield and fall forward and you have a first down. The third down play was a really good play by the linebacker. I'm taking Malachi on that play a majority of the time. It's not like we can go long. Line can't hold and WR can't create separation.
As good as Malachi is, he isn't going to beat many P5 players to that spot on a play like that.
VT has less than half of the total yards they finished with in the 0-0 Wake game in 2014
Mansor Delane might be the brightest spot on the entire defense.
Looking more and more likely that today is the day the consecutive games points streak dies.
Looks like every pass play is a 2-3 yarder. Guess the pass protection can't last longer than that based on the number of miami sacks.
Players beginning to look disinterested... Pry has some serious work to do within the context of keeping the players mentally & emotionally engaged.
What is there to be engaged in? The players aren't dumb. They know we have no chance in this game. It's obvious. Have to try to sell playing time next year, I guess.
You mean next week.
I have yet to see evidence of good coaching this year.
Agreed
I'm not sure it's going to work like that.
Sometimes it takes a LOT of coaching before it shows up on the field, particularly when you're missing a bunch of parts.
I am so over people providing the excuse that we don't have the "parts." That's only part of the problem.
Good coaches adjust to personnel.
This staff hasn't.
You can only adjust so much, and I'm not sure good coaches "coach down". I think they have to coach up, and assume they get a couple of years to make their case.
Who here is still surprised by this?
So we have a new coach (rookie coach at that) with new systems on both sides of the ball playing with a G5 roster. It is a huge part of the problem. Sure, the coaches need to continue to get better, but if you can't see the gross disparity of talent when we play other P5 teams then you simply aren't watching IMO.
Which looks the same as bad coaching.
There's no way to tell the difference, but it's hard to interpret what we're seeing as "good coaching but a work in progress"
Go look at our stats on penalties.
Earlier, they were better than Miami's for this game.
I think the conclusion has to be "insufficient data".
It's not fun, but nobody thought it would be.
Don't confuse measured criticism of the job done so far with me not pulling for Pry.
I want the guy to succeed here.
If that's the case, then one can't argue that we're "improving" either
Is it basketball season yet?
Yes
I mean are there game being played lol
This special teams coach needs to find a new job next year
Defense made the right adjustments at halftime. Offense somehow got worse.
Between Wells and Bowen, it is what it is
I mean maybe we can win during the bye week. /s
We can score three TD's in a quarter right?
Hope springs eternal! 🤣
I can't blame this one on the defense. Offense has been absolutely atrocious today. Nice to see Delane and Cam Johnson in on defense. Both look better than Chatman and Murray... who would have thought?
Did MIami put in the scrubs?
Clements got the reverse pancake there.
We have 153 yards of total offense. Miami has given us 109 yards on penalties.
That was a dumb play
Or maybe it was to lull the defense into thinking we were committed to the run.
Wtf with the QB draw...Bowen ain't it
Thomas keeps the shutout streak alive!!!
OK.... great to see the boys get a little victory.
Thank the fucking lord.
TD VT!!!
I'll take it.
The streak lives.
Atta boy thomas. Get in the end zone big dawg
The Streak lives on. I will take it.
Well, at least we scored.
I was wondering why the called the play before, but I think it was to set that up.
We winning the 2nd half 7-3😂
Even though the pass was caught behind the line, at least he was moving toward the goal line when he caught the ball.
Call it a win boys. We scored a TD.
It's an October Festivus miracle.
Oktoberfest-ivus.
Williams deserves an acting award on that one.
Nice try, a-hole.
Big fight win😂
Would love to see king and Thomas both in backfield at same time to work both flats. They appear to be our two most effective weapons.
I like that the players are fired up right now.
From the number of false starts for Miami, they definitely aren't used to actually playing in front of people.
Miami's winning, but are they looking well-coached right now?
Neither team is.
Finally a bigtime hit!!!
he made a football move
/s
got online at 3:10 to see about listening to the VT broadcast online, because i knew i would not get it on tv today. could've sworn the game was at 3:30. i guess that's where my attention is at with this team this year.
You haven't missed much.
That was a good defensive showing.
... and then Miami gets a good break on the punt.
They've had some great punts today.
The first punt that did not have back spin.
That was a great defensive series. Now let's drive the field. They need the belief. Pry hopefully can channel that to them.
Wow..creative innovative call there
Anyone else have the announcers sounding like ghouls?
Logged out and logged back in.
Guess my audio was just going nuts
Hey hey, I see we scored points.
Have you guys heard about Chaminade football?
Wright needs more snaps
Anybody know who "Malachi Carter" is? Scanning my roster card ferociously
Christian Moss was our punter in the first half.
I guess they spent all their time memorizing the Miami roster.
Would love to see a little more urgency.
EFF!!! Wells has ZERO touch on his throws.
Maybe, but you have to catch those. Wide open.
You absolutely do, but at the same time he's blazing rockets into RBs on the regular. He's simply got to be better than that.
Why tf Houston in to catch that
just go for it, what do we have to lose
Yeah seems like we're waving the flag with that punt
Gotta go for it right there imo. We got nothing to lose
Exactly, nothing to lose. I guess I can't say too much because I started on the '87 2-8-1 team, sorry. I just wish this coaching staff would have come out and said we don't care about winning this year because I can get in front of TV and just relax if they are not worried about it, They coach scared and it seems that the players follow. Also, I have seen many DC's and have never seen one as calm as Pry is all game. When you lack talent you need some inspiration or someone in your ass to maybe compete with better talent. Not saying fire the guy, I am with him for the 3 or 4 years he needs to rebuild even how painful it will be
I think they are scared cause of the whole thing against West Virginia with the for it or take the field goal. After that debacle we been very conservative
2-8-1 was '92 (i know, I was there) and that was the year Beamer almost got fired.
I see little from pry in the way of leading men to battle - he looks a lot like Fuente on the sideline with more facial hair. Very calculated. Not that that can't work. But like you said, we need a catalyst coach who can jumpstart the team and get more out of less.
It was refreshing to see us catching passes moving forward instead of with our back to the defense. Just wish we could learn to catch passes that hit our hands.
Yep
whats going on withour punting
Windy and getting a lot of pressure in his face.
Wells is way uptight the way he throws. Jacked up. Needs to f'ing chill - too much heat. That said, ball should've been caught.
Missed the open deep-ball. Holsten (who shouldn't be in) drops the pass. Epitome of our offense. What has happened to Moore?!
Holston should not see another snap.
I've been on the bench Holston train for a while. First, he's not that good (which is a common condition of the post-Fuente roster). Second, he's done after this season so might as well play the kids and get them some experience and see what they can bring to 2023. Holston seems like a good team guy but he probably should not get much playing time except for senior day.
This is becoming unbearable, again. Miami might end the game with more penalty yards than our total yards and win by 21+.
Van Dyke had too much time.
Delane is looking really good.
Pry - from our vantage point which is limited - does not seem to inspire the team and get them fired up. I wish he had more energy.
Both the defense and offense showed some fire in their last series.
Foster was such a catalyst of passion and fire for the Hokies. We need that.
I'll repeat.
Both the defense and offense showed some fire in their last series.
In spite of being down 20-7.
If Lofton makes the walk in TD we're still right in this somehow. This is a wild wild game. How bad is Miami?
Just imagine if Lofton had caught that one pass
Good series by the D.
These freshman have gave the pass defense a big boost this half
Good play by Lofton!
King. King. Needs more touches in space.
gotta love that YAC!
Pocket awareness is an issue with Wells.
we have no urgency
Lofton with a football move.
Wells really lacks vision and pocket presence.
Poor clock management in the 4th (a theme of the season) and Wells has to know he can't take a sack right now. All around things simply need to get better and we are a much better squad: dumb penalties, poor QB play, dropped passes, poor ST play, and horrid clock management.
EDIT: All of those things are things you can control regardless of talent.
why the hell did we use a timeout
We just got bailed out hard
Why is wells jogging there?
That was WELL out of bounds. And needless.
Big catch by Gallo!
Well, that was costly.
We're not dead yet!
Can the D get a stop?
Do we try for that or try the onside kick?
Tre Turner was sitting next to me (I asked if he could suit up or just steal someone's jersey). He was not happy that they kicked it deep instead of onsiding it.
No. The answer is no.
Touchdown Tech! We're winning if Lofton doesn't have bricks for hands
We are still in this one. Need a stop on D.
I like how Gallo knocked a guy down before the previous catch.
Gallo is now a hero.
atleast this team doesn't give up, thats a silver lining for sure
Still fighting and getting helped by Miami penalties.
No fire? I see some fire.
Say what you want about Wells, but he's a fighter.
He's the one guy with too much fire - on short throws.
As tough as this Hagen has been, this team is fighting
COME ON DEFENSE
Listening on the radio call and I am ready to be hurt again
VT fans looking a lot happier than the Miami fans.
Just got back in from cutting the front grass. Maybe I should do that more often during games
D is fired up!!!!
god we need to force a turnover
that might be a dagger
At least they are showing some fight
Miami is still capable of a penalty.
VT needs a huge break.
Couldn't get a stop.
Not today
Very encouraging fourth quarter. Glad the players didn't quit.
annnnd its over. Defense proved a lot after that first quarter
Welp... That will do it ladies and gentlemen. We simply are not a good football team. In fact we are plain bad. However, I love the way that the boys fought till the end. It's really challenging, but gonna keep watching, attending and supporting.
lmao a penalty on a kneel down, thats a first
It's the U. That is what they do.
At least we covered the spread on the pick 6.
Like the comeback effort...didn't quit, but it is what it is.
Fourth quarter showed some great things about this team. Much to be desired, but our young guys looked good and didn't quit.
ESPN stopped bothering to update the gamecast running plays and everything else...how did we score again? It says we did but provides no information on how or who and it's been on the same down and distance forever now with no updates.
Wells ran it in for our second TD.
Decent drive helped by about 30 yards in U penalties
At least it was interesting near the end but don't let that fool you. We were only in it because Miami was beating themselves with penalties
The defense play a whole lot better in the 2nd half helped alot too
Okay now we're dead.
I will take the positives. We beat the spread, didn't give up, showed signs of life, and Wells improved his accuracy.
Next Step people actually catching the ball when it hits them in the hands or chest.
Wells needs to stop throwing the ball 100 mph on every pass. It is like he feels like he needs to tattoo the ball pattern on the WRs every throw.
Watching Hendon absolutely ball out against Bama right now. This is the difference between watching a program that is all in on football and well coached and not. Makes me sick, but happy as hell for him.
I've said it a few times here the last few weeks, but Hendon's emergence nationally shows you what top notch offensive coaching and system, as well as top tier WRs can do for a QB. He didn't and wouldn't have had any of that at VT. Sadly.
Agree with you - happy for him but a bitter pill to swallow as a Hokie fan.
Some positives were Delaney continues to shine when Murray is out.
Defense adjusted and was far better second half.
Offense found some stuff that worked scheme wise but my god the receivers need some catching practice. I'm tired of hearing about wells speed throwing they need to start catching the damn ball.
Easily a winnable game with a little better talent hopefully with the 17 wrs here for the recruitment stuff they can land a few who can catch
Defense was far better this week than last and looked much better at times with the younger guys in there. At this point with 5 losses start playing the kids and just accept it
This team is not supremely talented, we all know that....this season is a result of coaching staff that doesn't know what it is doing. It is full of people in their first year in their respective positions and many of them are learning on the job. This season is a sacrificial lamb in their development, the problem for me is I haven't seen this staff develop. I recognize they won't develop overnight, but I'm starting to wonder if they will because this team as a whole is actually worst than the team that started against ODU. They have made the same mistakes and errors throughout the season and the defense gets worse by the week.
I know it's one thing, but when Pry didn't get fired up on the Peoples targeting, as much as I've complained about Bowen, I really wondered if Pry is the guy for the job. Maybe I'm just tired of losing but it really bothered me for some reason. There are a lot of level heads on TKP and I won't claim to be one of them lol....but to me, when are we as a fan base are happy with small victories and not winning that really is the beginning of the end.
I don't think anyone is really happy with small victories, but we all realize it's going to be a process, and it's going to take a while to rebuild this team.
Better to accept that, and pray the process works.
Those expecting to see measurable weekly progress are likely to be disappointed.
But shouldn't we expect some level of measurable progress as fans? In todays college football, waiting 3-4 years could be a death sentence
I like Pry alot but I am 100% of the opinion that having a HC, OC, and DC all learning on the job is not a plan for success.
Pry needs to be able to concentrate on administration--overseeing clock management, ect. not calling the D. Marve might have a ton of promise but if he's not ready to run the D, hire an old hand and let Marve coach LBs until he is ready.
Bowen just isn't a proficient playcaller at this level. Better personnel isn't going to magically fix that. It might mask it to an extent but that's it. So far, the most apt description of our offensive scheme would be "lots of concepts, most all poorly executed."
raise your hand if you heard "multiple" and knew this was exactly what it was going to mean. I've seen this movie before at VT.
Freaking Syracuse is 6-0. I got nothing else.
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut.
