Good to see Miami on ranked as well. As it stands, VT has home and away games against the other three ranked ACC teams to help build their resume. It'd be nice to see VT in the tournament and even better with a high seed.
Do the voters watch Basketball or just look at the snippets in the local paper? 24? No respect, no respect.
To be fair, there are 300+ D1 teams that are playing multiple times a week. Even if you narrow it down to the top 50-ish, it's impossible for anyone to watch that much basketball. Add on top of that that ranking teams is not even something they are paid to do, it's an additional responsibility on top of their full-time job, and polls are always going to be somewhat narrative based, especially early on before we get to see teams play multiple high-profile games. But yeah, I think we should absolutely be higher
HEY, I didn't come here for a well thought out rational response - I came here to feel the disrespekt!
Good points though, evidently still some work to do to get that name-brand bump
I think if you are a pollster and are going to watch 5-15 games a week, you'd probably start with ranked match ups. I know rankings mean nothing, but I think having the number by our name draws more viewers, some of whom might be voters.
Jon Rothstein tries to the point it's almost annoying, but he's a good follow on twitter to keep a quick tab on the NCAAM teams of note.
The last time I saw a mouth like that it had a hook in it...
I bet you were something before electricity.
Listen I agree with you, but we also haven't beat a single team in the current top 25 or receiving votes. We also looked pretty shaky against some middling teams.
All of that is fine, keep winning and it'll all take care of itself
UNC, do you feel that burn?
And the ladies are now up to #6.
Coaches Poll they are 23rd. No real surprise as there weren't many losses in Top 25 teams.
They did jump over Miami compared to last week's votes. Only real surprise is Maryland only dropped 4 spots with two losses even though they made the loss close against Illinois.
Just keep winning baby! Not gonna worry about all of the teams ahead of us that I think we are better than, including #2.
I didn't need AP voters to tell me that UVa is a heaping pile of #2.
I've watched 0 minutes of UVA basketball, but are they really #2 good?
Yes, they're undefeated with two ranked wins, but they seem to be barely squeaking past some pretty mediocre opponents.
I mean in terms of your classic #2s, UVa really piles it on.
Let me put it in perspective.
They beat a 2-9 FSU team by 5.
We will find out Saturday. They play #5 Houston.
They beat #11 Baylor and #18 Illinois. Neither game was really close. Not sure what to think of the win over Michigan. They are 6-3 but losses are to UVA, a ranked Kentucky squad and 9-1 Arizona State.
Ken Pom has the at 9th so he doesn't believe in them as much as the pollsters.
We are 28th in Ken pom, which is mainly because our schedules hasn't been great outside the UNC win. The Charleston loss is to the 98th best team so that's not helping either.
I'm hearing from cbb people that UVA is back to form. Their style means they win a lot of games by narrow margins but those games aren't nearly as close as those scores make them seem.
Having watched them some this year, when Beakman is healthy, they are really really good.
Suspect they are still likely to have a game or two where their offense hits a wall and they can't score enough to win, but this team is easily the best looking team since their title team
The question is always, can their offense score enough points if the other team has a defense with a pulse?
Their offense this season is nearly the best they have had in a decade while the defense is at its norms. It more likely is the team that can beat them up the floor to not allow them to get in half court defensive set. Houston will be a test of that nature.
Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils sitting at 1-9 got 4 votes....polls are a joke.
edit: seems as though the page has been edited and it no longer shows MSV receiving any votes, wish I had screenshotted it, cause I promise it was there
A voter misclicked, meant to vote for Mississippi State.
Since losing to Miami on a half-court buzzer-beater on January 26, we're 23-4 with an ACC title and wins over Duke, UNC (2x), UVA, Notre Dame, OK State, etc. 12-1 in Cassell, and 5-0 at the new Cassell North (Barclay's Center).
This program is ROLLIN right now fellas.
Polls in CBB are even trickier than football in my opinion, simply because there are so many teams to have to watch/compare/etc.
I've got no problem with us just finally cracking the rankings. This team is getting better, this coach is the exact right person for the job, and keep winning and things will take care of themselves.
Tell me right now that this team might not be the best team in the ACC. You could just as easily make an argument that they are vs that they are not.
Greenberg said it best, 'the two best teams in the ACC reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia...the ACC runs through the commonwealth"
I think this might actually be the best VT bball team in my years of Hokie fandom. It's funny, I was honestly expecting it to take until at least a few weeks into ACC play to get the national recognition, but it's nice.
You get ranked, you get more people watching. You win when ranked, you move up and get people believing. #24 is a lot better than also receiving votes. Winning when you are ranked is how you build the brand.
Now the two best teams in the ACC (VT Men's and Women's BB) just need to keep winning as ranked teams. Then the place we are ranked will take care of itself.
If not for those home cookin College of Charleston refs, we'd be sitting at 11-0, probably sitting in the top 15....oh well, just keep winning and we'll get there
The frustrating thing is, the way the committee and pollsters respect basketball programs that haven't yet made a deep run in the tournament, that loss to CoC probably is the difference between a 2 or 3 seed right now and a 6 or 7 seed. Yes, we have an opportunity to improve upon that in the ACC slate, but I don't for a second think someone like UNC, Villanova, UCLA, Indiana, Kentucky, etc sits as low on the rankings as we are right now, with 1 loss after winning the ACC last year and only losing one starter.
Still a few months to get that together, but.... Yeah. The fact we are only #24 right now is a bit head scratching.
Meh, we are 11 games in. Most pollsters are still voting on name recognition and W/L (and name recognition of the team we lost to). Sorry, but I'm not gonna get worked up about disrespect at this point in the schedule.
Like Kenny Rogers says, there will plenty of time for counting when the dealing is done.
On a slightly related note, I know we've still got 20+ conference games left... but Lunardi's got us as a 6-seed right now.
We're 28th in the NET rankings (0-1 in Quad 1, 10-0 in the rest, but our wins against UNC, OKSt, and Penn St all have potential to be Q1 wins when it's all said and done).
Looooooooong road ahead... but this could be a really fun season.
Pemn St already moved to a Q1 again but they're teetering. Still lots of movement expected when Dayton gets healthy and if UNC figures shit out.
