Home redemption...
The Hokies return home after two very pedestrian efforts in losses to Boston College and Wake Forest. This will be the 41st meeting between these teams with the advantage to the Hokies 23 to 17. The Hokies have defeated the Tigers eight times in the last ten games.
The Tigers are coached by Brad Brownell. He began his college coaching career at Evansville as an assistant coach in 1991. Clemson is his third college head coaching job, taking over the job in 2010. He has a 229–169 overall record guiding the Tigers.
The Tigers come into this contest winners of their last three games to close out 2022. They are 11-3 on the season. They have started 3-0 in the ACC, having beaten NC State, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest all by double digits. Their three losses were South Carolina, Iowa, and Loyola.
The Tigers are a team that heavily relies on its starting five, in a three guard two forward set. The regular rotation is surprisingly light on transfers with only one.
This team is led by Forward Hunter Tyson, in his senior year. Tyson is averaging nearly a double-double with 15.6 points, and 9.7 rebounds per game. Kidd and Poteat will be called on in stretches to cover Tyson to limit Mutts foul trouble.
Defensively, they play primarily man-to-man defense, varying their levels of pressure depending on personnel and their opponent, in terms or how hard they guard, how far they extend the court. An occasional zone but not the norm for the Tigers. Clemson usually wins the rebounding battle, allowing very few second chance points.
Offensively, Coach Brownell is running what he refers to as Gap Attack Zone Offense, a variable on Motion
Offense, which puts an emphasis on dribble penetration to draw multiple defenders to create an open shooter, lead to defensive fouls or baskets at the rim. They will push the ball on misses and turnovers which leaves them vulnerable on extended missed shots. Brownell expects his team to constantly be in motion..
The Tigers Backcourt
Chase Hunter 1 JR G 6-3 204 14.6 Pts, 2.2 Reb, 4.6 Ast

Alex Hemenway 12 SR G 6-3 185 9.8 Pts, 2.5 Reb, 1.5 Ast
Joshua Beadle 0 FR G 6-3 170 2.4 Pts, 1.4 Reb, 1.1 Ast
The Tigers Frontcourt
Hunter Tyson 5 SR F 6-8 215 15.6 Pts, 9.7 Reb, 1.9 Ast
PJ Hall 24 JR F 6-10 235 12.5 Pts, 4.5 Reb, 1.2 Ast
Ian Schieffelin 4 SO F 6-8 225 5.6 Pts, 3.9 Reb, 1.4 Ast
Ben Middlebrooks 10 SO F 6-10 225 3.2 Pts, 2.6 Reb, 0.3 Ast
RJ Godfrey 22 FR F 6-7 225 3.0 Pts, 1.2 Reb, 0.4 Ast
What to expect from Clemson?
Fast paced contest. Clemson will constantly be running fresh players into the game. Expect two or three substitutes at every stoppage. Brownell uses this to keep opponent defenses from getting a good bearing on what to expect. They have worn down opponents at the end of games, allowing them to pull away in the last few minutes of each game. That said, barring foul trouble Hunter, Tyson and Hemenway will see 30+ minutes tonight.
The Tigers have scored 70 points or more in 11 games and are 10-1 in those contests. Fouls are usually pretty even at around 18 for and against the Tigers average. Clemson shoots 78% from the line as a team. Tyson and Hunter average around 4 attempts each at the line. The Tigers have won 9 games by double-digits this season, but are 2-2 in games decided by less than ten.
Perimeter shooting can make or break a game for Clemson. In two of their three losses the Tigers were held below 31% from the outside. In only two games did they shoot lower than 31% and still win.
The Hokies
Will they or wont they? Rice and Cattoor are both reported to be game time decisions. This obviously plays a tremendous role in what Hokies team is on the floor.
Virginia Tech's Hunter Cattoor (forearm) and Rodney Rice (ankle) are both game-time decisions for today's game against Clemson, per a school spokesman. Cattoor averages 9.6 PPG and DNP in last game.Rice is a former Top-100 recruit.— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) January 4, 2023
Take this for what it is. I expect Hunter back but Rice to sit again. I would be surprised if Rice plays this season at this point.
The Hokies need to show they can recover from the two poor performances over the Holiday. This happens by avoiding bad fouls and protecting the ball. The Hokies had 28 turnovers in those games. They also had several major defensive lapses at critical moments rebounding the basketball. One play goes the other way and it's a different result.
Another huge performance from Justyn Mutts, hopefully not wasted. He needs to take the ball at Tyson early and often. Tyson sat significant portions in all three losses due to foul trouble.
Highlight of the Wake Forest game
Mutts going off for eighteen and eight with highlight reel stuff.

In Closing
The Hokies are home and should have a near capacity crowd so cant blame the environment
Play smart basketball and win ugly. Take a page from the Ladies.
Hokies overcome the lingering doubt of the prior two games to win a close one 71-68
This is a three Popcorn Decision. Just tough to know again which Hokies team we will see with the factors of timing, location, and injuries.

Guess we will see if Rice plays. Surprised by Cattoor only that I saw several ACC reporters post he was expected tonight. I take Rothstein with a bucket of salt.
Yahhhhh so he didn't break anything but is sitting out this long is odd
Burnop just said because of a minor setback for Rice the other day he will likely only be playing in a small or emergency capacity today. For Cattoor he said it's still tender so wants it to fully heal to avoid further injury so he didn't even dress
This is just silly with how they are handling Rice. He's been "this close" to playing for like the last 3 weeks now. If a "minor setback" kept him from playing today, just shut him down the rest of the season and medical redshirt him. It's clear from their actions that the training staff has concerns about him further risking injury. You can't be a game time decision for like the last month but then there's a minor set back so he has to sit. Game time decisions typically mean the player is generally healthy and its a conditioning issue or a pain tolerance issue (meaning he can play thru it but there's no risk to actually damage the injured body part). He's either at risk or not. If he's not, play him. Stop trying to go from 96% ready to 98% ready. He's a very talented player that can help this team right now if he's ready to go. Get him out there. If he's at risk, stop with the game time decision nonsense, sit him for a longer period and rehab him. And given where we are in the season and if longer medical attention is needed, its better for us and the player to preserve his eligibility with a redshirt
At a certain point, they'll have waited so long with Rice that we've played our way out of meaningful postseason play. Right now, we are probably already there unless we rip off a series of high profile wins, so it might already be time to shut him down for the year and get the redshirt. And possibly explore options regarding Cattoor as well.
LET'S GO.......
HOKIES!!!!
LET'S GO...DRINKING!!!!
Looks like the entire 1st half will be on ESPN News as the UF - ATM game is only halfway through the second half.
A&M forgot their uniforms at the hotel. Started late and down 1 after a technical foul.
Brent Williams Effing us over again... SMH
S/
My ESPN News showing TCU vs Baylor.
Yup... I was just making an assumption based on how they tend to operate from time to time. Sucks we have to miss significant time of our game because of the ATM uniform mistake.
I've got Baylor and TCU on ESPN news
Drinking...
LOLUVa lost last night. Duke is currently getting blown out by NCSU. Miami is down to GT with little time left. I take this as a sign that I'm only in for happy outcomes tonight! LFG!!!
HOKIES!
ESPNU showing tip time to be 9:10 pm
now on the espn app
Not on Xbox. Has it tipped yet?
Is it on the app? I don't see it.
Nope just the score. No link on app and announcer is wrong about ESPN News too.
not showing up on the app
I'm not seeing a live stream on the app anywhere yet even though it started.
Edit: on espnews now
Is it actually streaming the game for you? Mine says this event has not yet started even though it has.
Edit: Nevermind, working now.
Kidd with the smooth finish at the rim. Please tell me someone saw that!
And of course it's not working because it's ESPN
They had two hours to figure it out. The A&M game was never going to finish by 9 or even 9:10 with the delayed start. And yet ESPN still screwed it up.
Still can't access the game on the ESPN app.
App on the firestick says the event hasn't started yet. App on my phone has it 2-2 with 17:41 left in the 1st half
now it's on espnews
My app just kicked in 3 minutes in
Usually they put where the game is being shown down on the bottom right when the previous game runs over. They've done it for us many times. Why is it nearly the under 16 in our game and I'm just now flipping to ESPNews because I found out on this board? Ridiculous.
I recommend listening to audio on the Virginia tech Hokies app if youre not subscribe espn news
Basile with a dumb early second foul.
Ticky tacky calls by the refs so far. That's amazing since we have a short bench!
Basile cannot get 2 fouls this early. This game is gonna be another grind.
He just continues to show complete lack of situational awareness. You can't sit under the basket if you aren't going to go up hard defensively
This is tough to watch without cattor in sheesh
Some bad shots by both teams
We haven't scored in like 5 minutes (since Pedullas 3). WTF
Camden taking Maddox level shots rn and Pedulla seems like he's just forcing. Not having mutts down low and no basille in and the offense is just sucked out of the air
are we even running some kind of offense?
It's the "spray & pray" offense.
Archer fans, anyone?
Sigh

Cattoor needs to heal faster.
Just gotta keep drawing fouls and then make our shots
Problem is we drew fouls and officials refused to call them. Players getting beaten up for no reason.
This would be a good game for Maddox to return to form.
This aged well!
We are going to have to pull students out of the crowd for second half if these fouls keep up
Missed the Hemenway injury. That's a 10 spot off the board for each team.
Poteat just keeps getting better. We should keep feeding him inside. He always seems to be right there in the lane. And he's got the size we are lacking from other guys to not get pushed around.
Announcer sounded like he said Tackle Coliseum just now....fitting for the way ACC officials have called games this season.
Letting them shoot 50% from outside is not the way to win this one.
Need to make Free throws!
Everytime we play Clemson and I see PJ Hall playing well it hurts to know his recruiting came down to VT and Clemson and we couldn't seal the deal. He's the only recruit like that that I get a bit sad about lol
Let me introduce you to Tyler Nickel...
He's a much bigger miss IMO.
Camden taking rebounding lessons from Basile? Ugly one hand tip on a ball right to him
That was ugly from Pedulla
definitely not what you want to see from your starting PG...
Woah!!
Oh Maddox, how I've missed you.
Maddox is on 🔥
Feels like it should be a 10 point deficit at the half. Glad its not.
Man did we need this figure out your stroke game from Maddox
ESPN equipment at its finest there with Coach at the half
ESPN...the worldwide leader in spending the most money to have the worst broadcasts & platforms.
That was sweet!
And here we go with only VT committing fouls.....
Not sure why I am watching the game standing-up, but I am
What a block!
Feels like Tyson has been at Clemson for 15 years now
Someone is going to have to explain to me what ACC officials consider fouls. It's so random and sometime dangerous.
That last series was a perfect example. Mutts mugged, no call. Poteat gets called diving for a loose ball. Then Hall gets called for a charge after landing on our guys foot and falling away.
Pedulla gets elbowed in the head by screener causing him to duck and hit Hunter's head. Foul on Pedulla.
Unfortunately you just explained it perfectly
In ACC play, our identity is "turnover machine"
Has Maddox even taken a shot the 2H?
He saving it for the game winner.
Looks like we're checking out on this one
...suddenly we can't buy a bucket and they can't miss. Down 8
And those are the possessions we've been losing on the last few games. No need to rush and press and turn the ball over or take quick bad shots yet we do and it results in major point swings
Yeah...shot selection seems.....suboptimal.
Everything going in for Klempson. Not good Bob.
We run that after a break?
Back to back.
Cue the untimely turnovers...
Everything we are doing seems so.....incoherent?
How is that not a technical foul?
We are a very sloppy basketball team.
Our inability to finish shots we take within 2' of the basket is TERRIBLE
Someone needs to add Mortal Kombat graphics to that clip of the leg-lift shoulder-charge against Pedulla.
I see plays like that and always think "Wtf was that guy thinking?" lol
At least the ref called it for us
Dang, too bad Basile couldn't slam that one home. That would have been epic.
Hall is in with 4 fouls. Why aren't we attacking the lane against him?
Run. At. Hall. With. 4. Fouls.
☝️
No designed play right at Halls on offense is a bad call. Take him off the floor.
That was the quickest injury timeout call I've ever seen.
...not complaining though. It's just usually you have to writhe in agony on the floor for 10+ seconds in order to get that call.
Yeah that whistle was so quick I literally just thought it was a late foul call against Poteat lol
Same thought
We can't even make a layup.
Hall comes in with 4 fouls. We run one play against him. Basile pulls up midrange.
jumping into a player should not count as a foul
Agreed [EDIT: I agree it should not be a defensive foul]...it should be an offensive charge.
Also, intentionally fouling a player (not making a play on the ball) in the last few minutes of a game should be treated the same as it would be in early minutes of a game: as a technical.
What. was. that. shot?
What the living hell shot was that, Basile?
Just no composure on offense the last ten minutes
Welp. The way things are going we are going to need to make an epic run in the ACCT to even get into the tourney.
If it continues, probably. We need to start getting some wins again. The difference from last year is we have more Q1 wins already than we had all of last season. Before Cattoor's injury, I'd say we were on track for a 5 to 7 seed. Right now, I'd say we're a bubble team with the Q1 wins in our favor to slightly push us on the right side. But we can't afford to keep dropping winnable games like this. The team has shot poorly and for spurts of gameplay, looked disoriented on both sides of the ball, the last two games. Correct either (hopefully both) issues, and we could have won WF or tonight. We just need the players out there to step up their games with Cattoor out. Or really hope Cattoor can get back ASAP
Wow what a play by Pedulla!!!!
We look clueless out there a lot of the time
...and on top of that, we often look like nobody wants to be the play maker. It's a random generator function of X passes then shoot!!
Cattoor effect again....
...and it wasn't even called a foul.
Maddox was hot and scored 11 points in the 1H. Did not take a shot the 2H.
Maddox completely disappeared in the second half. I know Cattoor is a huge loss, but we look like a bottom tier ACC squad right now.
Well, that's a bummer. Kudos to the crowd though--they were always hyped up at the right moments. Honestly pretty amazed that it stayed that close considering how poorly we shot as a team.
I didn't think we'd struggle as much without Cattoor based on the fact that his usage rate isn't particularly high and the way a Mike Young team is constructed, everything doesn't run thru one specific player or type of player. We'd miss him but given the other players we have, I figured if each could elevate their games just the slightest tad bit, we wouldn't feel Cattoor's absence as much. Through two games (small sample but still), that's gonna be wrong. This team is struggling. It's not like they're getting blown out, so I guess there's a little positive, but there always a play or two behind that keeps them from making a run, keeping the other team from making a run, sealing a win, etc. Stuff we've seen the team do from January of last year all the way up until Cattoor's injury this year. Everything is just a struggle. Both of these previous two games have been winnable, they're just not executing and raising their game up to take it. And if Cattoor can't get back asap, we're likely gonna miss the tournament.
Not having Cattoor on the court means we basically have one of Kidd/Poteat/Camden/Collins on the court, and none of those guys are a scoring threat right now in any way. Cattoor doesn't light it up most nights, but having another playmaker keeps the defense honest, so that's why we are struggling so much without him. We just don't have a deep-enough roster this year to sustain us through injuries to core players.
Poteat scores if they get the ball to him underneath. He had 8 points last night. Just too sloppy passing to consistently find him.
He only scores open dunks from Mutts' dimes or free throws. That's not a scoring threat
The more minutes he gets the more comfortable he appears to be. I think he could continue to evolve into a scoring threat.
I see Poteat as our swing guy. If they allowing an alley fight (BC). Put Poteat in and let him go Bud Foster on the inside ("blocked" shots and dunks). If they are allowing the outside game, go finesse and shoot 3s.
On top of that, in the two games without Cattoor, some combination of Mutts/Basile/Kidd have picked up two early fouls and most of the first half is spent with two of Kidd/Poteat/Camden/Collins on the floor. I'm sure that this is messing up the player rotations/combinations that the team is practicing with and game planning around, but it doesn't excuse the weak play down low and sloppy passing.
Potential unpopular opinion: this is a Mike Young team, for better or worse. Typically not very good defense and you live by your shooters. Almost every game will be a 3-5 point anxiety inducing stress affair.
Starting to think Mike Young isn't the savior we thought he was
Correct. Multiple losses to Brad Fucking Brownell and his fucking football school that makes one NCAA tourney in 10 years indicates we don't have tony bennett here.
Well we aren't getting blown out so I guess you could say we are one player clicking from winning these games but I can't help but feel like this is our season:

I feel like we are staring down the barrel of another 2-7 conference start. This team just randomly get sloppy with their ball handling and shot selection. Pedulla, for as much as he is a clutch shooter, isn't a good PG imo. Some of the shots by Mutts were just flat tonight as well. Really would like to see what Rice could do, but who knows when that will happen. Personal expectations for the team have gone way down in the last few weeks. Unless we rip off some wins against maybe the toughest part of our schedule coming up, we may have to pray for another miracle in Brooklyn this March.
I think Pedulla is a good PG, but he was just trying too hard in this game to force things to happen because he knew we were playing so flat and poorly. Plus it's still just his first year starting, so I think he deserves some slack.
That's fair, but it's frustrating to watch lol
Yes, but he had at least 4 horrible turnovers last night. Watching him from the Cassell was painful at times. His first half attempts at layups were atrocious, he didn't put enough power to get them above the rim. Now granted he was getting hacked, hit, blocked, and his wallet lifted with no call. I don't even think those Clemson players bought him dinner before all that groping.
Yeah, he's a solid PG. But he's been pressing the last two games with Cattoor out, which I get. We do need everyone to elevate their games to help alleviate Cattoor's absence, but you can tell Pedulla is forcing things. Over time in his collegiate career, Cattoor has evolved from a catch and shoot guy to a pretty decent secondary ball handler. He's by no means great, but he's capable of initiating offense as the ball handler, running some picks, working entry passes, etc. It helps take some of the load of Pedulla when he's out there and also gives us options for when Pedulla sits. But we're having stretches of minutes the last two games where we're really having tough times getting quality shots. It's why our shooting percentages are so low. We're missing the passes by a fraction or two of second and a good shot turns into a contested one. If Cattoor or Rice could be out there to help shoulder the load, that would be a solution. Or collectively the team can work with each other to iron out these kinks without Cattoor. They aren't far off, but its significant enough to where they will keep having the same issues and losing games if not corrected quickly
Beyond frustrating this team. We finally have some depth, contributions from Lynn Kidd, a true point, and Rice can't play and we aren't tough enough to beat a terrible coach in brad brownell or a single digit BC. Maddening. This roster is pretty darn good. no toughness.
Beating a dead horse, but I don't understand the whole "game-time decision" nonsense from CMY. I'm at the point where anything other than "he's playing tonight" means Rice/Cattoor/whoever will not be playing.
What does it change, really?
I would approach Rice about a redshirt at this point. This is an NIT team. Let him heal, get stronger and come in next year. Why bring him on now to be on a team that is scrappy for 36 minutes against a shit Beoheim team only to lose at the end?
Let's bottom line this though, last night's loss came down to ONE thing. The inability to score inside.
They shot 9-24 from outside which is a good night for them. Inside the perimeter let the horror show begin. This team shot 12-43 inside the perimeter. This wasn't on the bench guys.
Basile was 2-9 inside, Mutts was also 2-9, Pedulla one upped them going 1-9. That's 5-27 from the three leading scorers. The rest of the team shot 7-17.
When you lose a game by a single basket and fail to score on 57 possessions you have to get back to set plays on offense .
The sequence that stood out to me the most was late in second half and coming out of a timeout, they had two straight possessions that looked like they had zero plan and led to two quick empty possessions.
The good news is that a couple fixed possessions and they get back to winning basketball. The bad news is that the rest of January are all teams with double digit wins. These guys have to find the little things to win ugly.
I was thinking last night that the silver lining is that we've been losing games (all by very small margins) with horrific shooting %s and one of our best players out.
That makes it feel and seem correctable at least.
Why don't our bigs fucking dunk the ball? Does young discourage this? Why do they opt for the finger roll lay ins vs. taking it up strong and dunking. Maddening. Isn't Ace Custis on the staff? DUNK the ball. Last night Basile had an easy dunk to open the second half...instead he opts for a soft lay in?? WTF? We do this often.
Poteat has no issues in dunking. But I am with you on Basile.
I think we know why Basile doesn't dunk
This is all rooted in the fact that (and I keep saying it) this team is charmin soft. The last few games have been physical and they simply cannot engage in a meaningful way.
Our missing 6 points from Cattoor being out has cost us a second game. His scoring is always nice, but his defense is better and that is what is missing right now.
Remember everyone that doesn't understand basketball getting excited that we were "tall" for once. Well we started 3 big men and they combined for 10-32 from the field. Poteat made a couple dunks off the bench and Camden (tall but not a big) did his usual running cardio and added another 3 missed shots. I have no understanding of how Kidd and Camden were top 100 players in their classes. They aren't ACC players.
- Kidd looks lost half the time.
- Camden does nothing.
- Poteat offers very little as well.
- Basile is very inconsistent, too soft inside.
- Mutts is our best player, but had a rough game.
The guards aren't much better:
- Pedulla is good but shot 1-9 inside the arc.
- Maddox continues to shoot in the 25% range from 3 which is abysmal, although he is making his mid range shots. He needs to get back to last years 3 point shooting asap.
- Collins has potential but currently offers nothing at all on offense
- Cattoor and Rice much needed.
Add that up and that's a lower level acc team. Maybe mid level if everyone gets healthy and shots start magically falling
I don't remember any excitement about us being tall, especially since we aren't any taller than last year. I do remember some excitement about us being deeper than last year though, which I also thought really wasn't the case unfortunately.
I disagree on Poteat. He is a physical presence defensively (too much at times) and hustles after loose balls. He scores when they find him and he is solid at the free throw line as well. Young just doesnt give him as much run offensively. I honestly wish they would run set plays to get him the ball underneath. Pedulla driving the left with Poteat setting up underneath on the right. Pedulla has the option to lay it in or drop it across to Poteat for the easy dunk. They run this same type play to Basile who constantly botches it.
Maddox outside of the first half yesterday has not hit his mid-range. He has to find the guts to take it all the way to the rim.
Kind of disagree on Maddox, I seem to remember quite a few games where he hit his mid range jumpers but missed from beyond the arc or at the rim. I just wish his defense would get a little better, he got burned a lot last night.
This. I said it earlier in the game thread. I'm no expert, but I think Poteat has given us quality minutes lately. And if the refs are letting everybody bang bodies, he's built for that, and if it's one sided against us, let him give some hard fouls to send a message. He seems good at getting in good position for the late pass underneath and is not afraid to dunk that shit. I have no problem giving him more run.
Oops....double post. Drinking....
I feel like Pedulla has the strength to finish those shots inside but as of lately he's been like falling away from the hoop and kind of trying to just lift or finesse the ball over the defender every time (and perhaps this is because of how we've seen the refs calling zero fouls when we get our arms hacked off driving).
Don't agree that we're low level; we've lost four games by a combined 12 points. BUT i can agree that the guys playing soft need to man the hell up rebounding (Basile, Camden), finishing at the rim (Basile Maddox Camden), and coming towards the pass instead of the waiting for it to come to you (Basile).
Mutts has weird games like yesterday where he isn't aggressive in attacking the rim and others where he's all over it. He needs to be consistent bringing the boom but it's hard getting two light fouls on early. Again, I can't help but also think refs have really been avoiding calling fouls under the rim all year but will call a hand check at half court.
Once again, we need a guy like Radford to get us through shooting droughts with pure physicality on drives and mayhem inside.
Holy cow, I was watching him play before our game and sheeesh I would love to have him back he's really developed into a slasher with decent handles
To me the biggest worry from the last few games is how many passes are going awry from Pedulla and Mutts feels like we waste so many possessions trying to force things too much. Interior scoring has and is a big big issue.
Sadly. That's officiating. If they are allowing you to get hammered in the lane, you're going to press and try to Alex sure everything is perfect.
Alex sure >> make sure.
Everyone know this. /s
