OT: Shane Beamer contract extension

Shane got himself an almost $4m raise and a contract extension through 2027. I'm happy for him, but deeply amused that USC is trying to claim "Beamerball" as their own 🤣

Chaps me every time I hear it. At least the commentators have the decency to call it BB 2.0 some of the time.

I mean that is his name...

I'm still figuring this out.

agreed. no big deal.

Yes, it is his last name and he played on special teams under his Dad, but it was Frank Beamer developed Beamerball into a real thing. Shane had little to do with the development.
As long as he promotes the ideas that originated with his Dad, I have no problem with him using the term.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Jesus that's a massive salary increase for 8 wins. The SEC and BIG are just going to rewrite annual coaches salaries.

He has them in consecutive bowl games in years where they expected to suck.

That's good but a 4 million raise to 8th in the SEC and top 15-20 (depending on private schools and PSU) is a steep increase that raises the floor of a lot of other schools coaching salaries. Josh Heubel at Tennessee is going to make less next year without a raise of his own.

He beat Clemson and Tennessee in a year those were top 5 schools.

Edit: sorry, removed Alabama. Also, Clemson was not a top 5 school this year as it turned out. Late night comments will get after ya.

You mean Clemson? Alabama only lost to Tennessee and LSU.

Tennessee beat Bama. Shane beat Tennessee. Transitive property of football, duh.

If you play it, they will win.

Also, when Alabama loses, it's like everyone else wins.

He also had bad losses to Missouri, Florida and ND. The extension and a raise totally warranted. Resetting the floor again for all schools don't think so.

I don't think he's resetting the floor. He defeating two top 10ish teams (each of which would've been a playoff team had they beaten SCar). That's not the 'floor'

Edit: in fact, that is approaching the ceiling at SCar.

So if 6.5 is the ceiling what is he making in year 3,4 and 5? What do they offer him if he wins 9/10 games next year?

"Approaching" the ceiling. I think the ceiling there is 10-11 wins.

Edit: I think any coach that can get 10-11 wins at SCar should get paid in the top 10% of fbs. That job is stupid tough.

My in laws who are gamecocks got me a Beamerball Carhartt sweater. I chuckled when I opened it, but it's pretty dope.

Wish I could get it in maroon and orange

Get that bag. Very happy for him. I love Pry and the job he's doing, but I wish VT had hired him after the 2020 season, and I advocated for it then. It felt like he belonged at VT.

He didn't want to, though. He'd have to coach under Frank's shadow, and Shane was more interested in cementing his own legacy at his own school.

And having a resume that includes Oklahoma and Georgia, he got to pick which school he could coach.

Yea, he's blazing his own new path at usc jr by creating something called Beamerball and playing Enter Sandman; establishing that new identity instead of doing anything remotely related to VT. /s

This was better for Shane.

I'd love for him to come back to VT now, but it would be a significant risk and paycut for him at this point, I'm afraid.

If Frank is cool with them calling it Beamerball, then I'm cool with it. It is his own son after all lol

Right on. I would think that would be the same as getting upset at Frank in the Gamecocks attire. If VT was doing better now, no one would care much.

Frank Beamer's legacy is South Carolina's HC.

Don't hate the coach; hate the game.

"Vick, dashing back . . . here he comes again . . . Electrifying . . . and have you ever seen anything like this?"

Getting paaaid!!

I'm happy for Shane. He is a super nice, class individual- much like his father. He really is. And he is a good football coach and a good recruiter. He is a James Franklin type and will continue to win at South Carolina. I am most happy for him though to prove the morons wrong that he was a nepotism hire and not good enough to coach at VT until he proved himself. Well morons, he has proved himself to the tune of VT couldn't afford to hire him now if we wanted to. Good for you Shane. You have always earned it, but now its in black and white. VT would be lucky to have him as head coach... and because he can fucking coach and not because of who his dad is.

to prove the morons wrong that he was a nepotism hire and not good enough to coach at VT

#sauces say he shutdown early feelers to VT and has/had no interest in coaching here.

He meant when Shane was on staff at VT with his dad. He had a stick with a boxing glove on it, and it made the internet rounds as he tried to get RBs to fumble.

Shane was qualified then to coach, and he's proven it.

Well yeah Shane is undefeated as VT's head coach

I remember a lot of people, myself included, directing a lot of ire at Shane's RB rotation. The defense knew what type of play was coming depending on which RB was on the field. Was this a Loeffler decision or a Shane decision? But yeah, JC Coleman would get in a rhythm and then either Shane or Lefty would put another RB in to run a screen pass or a jet sweep, depending on who had the best hands or best speed t the edge. Does hindsight prove it was a Loeffler decision because Shane isn't doing that kind of thing at SCar? I don't know what Bowling Green does. I don't have time to watch a Bowling Green football game, even if one was ever televised.

Lefty coached them to a bowl game this year and yes, quite a few of their games were televised.

Good for them. I wonder what their approach to RB rotation is?

Yep -Love mid week or Friday night "MACtion"! Not always consequential to the overall CFB discussion but quite often very entertaining games to watch. Plus it means we can watch some sort of live football almost every day of the week -if not every day!

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

Frank got nepotism calls even though Shane had already worked for both Spurrier and another HC before he came back here to be RB Coach.

Ah, I didn't realize that, thanks for correcting me.

If I recall correctly, Frank made room for Shane on the staff by firing Coach Cavanaugh - that was the move that got scrutiny (rightfully so - one could argue our recruiting started to decline when Cav was pushed out).

Anyways, it was clearly was a nepotism hire, but that doesn't mean Shane wasn't qualified. The boxing-glove-stick was funny, I don't know if it was or wasn't an effective coaching tool, but it was quality meme material.

Someone outside of the VT coaching staff that Frank trusts - highly- recommended he get younger on staff combined with doing something about the offense. That was behind the discussions for Cav to first take a more limited role, then retire. Beamer did not "fire" cav. from what I was told.

That was behind the discussions for Cav to first take a more limited role, then retire. Beamer did not "fire" cav. from what I was told.

This sort of tracks with what Cav's (then) neighbor told me - he was basically asked to choose between taking (what Cav felt was) a demotion or leaving the program.

highly- recommended he get younger on staff combined with doing something about the offense.

I could be misremembering, but I think shane came in right before the 2011 season, and the offensive staff was replaced after the 2012 season? Hindsight is 20/20, but feels like the right move would've been to replace the whole offensive staff, and use that as an opportunity to bring Shane on board.

Anyways, family connections aside, Shane was qualified then, and is doing a decent job at a challenging program now.

Um while all this tracks with what I remember, Cav moving roles was for Cornell Brown to come on, Billy Hite retired to make room for Shane.

Also to some one else post above, Shane had worked for Phil Fulmer as a grad assistant at Tennessee, Sylvester Croom as CB/ Recruiting Coordinator and then RB/RC, and then Spurrier as a bunch of things: OLB/ST/CB/RC prior to VT. Since VT je coached TEs at UGA and at OU. He has coached a lot of positions for a number of SEC schools and OU. The coaches he's worked under are massive names in the college coaching world. If his last name wasn't Beamer no one would have thought nepotism hire. If VT hires a guy with his resume to coach at VT 99% would be over joyed with the hire and commend Pry for getting that much SEC recruiting exp and coaching.

Billy Hite had also been coaching at Tech since before Beamer arrived. 32 years at the same place was a heck of a run. Still miss him, not sure we have had as good a RB coach since he retired.

A big part of Coach Cav leaving was the change in recruiting techniques and focus. If I remember right, he didn't want to do the new work.

#sauces say that Shane knows P5 recruiting like the back of his hand and knew what type of players/roster Fu was recruiting and signing. Read into that what you wish regarding his interest in the VT job

So what you're saying is... Shane Beamer, very qualified?

Pretty sure he gets a Masters membership for beating Clemson

SC now playing Enter Sandman as a hype song during their games and everyone singing along is more annoying to me. Can't they come up with their own game day rituals....

VT now singing along annoys me, it was better in my day, get off my lawn!

False. It's pretty awesome to hear everyone crank up the voices to sing, "SLEEP WITH ONE EYE OOPEN!"

I think VT needs to reclaim that, but the only real way is to have a lights-out defense, play night games, and win them.

If we take care of business, we reclaim our rightful legacy.

Do they actually do that? I thought they were the (very cringey) Sandstorm school?

Interesting enough, I had a SC fan tell me SC is where coaches go to die. He said no SC HC has ever gone on to be a head whistle at another job.
