Hail Portal!

From his Temple page:

2022 (Sophomore): Earned All-AAC recognition (AAC-first team, Phil Steele-second team, Pro Football Network-honorable mention) ... lost 30 pounds since the end of last season ... earned a single digit - a Temple tradition given to those who lead by example on and off the field ... voted by teammates as one of five captains (Xach Gill, Adam Klein, Jordan Magee, and David Martin-Robinson) for the 2022 season ... had career-high 3.5 sacks vs. Tulsa , just shy of the Temple record of 4.0 set by Dan Klecko in 2002 ... set career high in tackles at Navy with 6 ... finished the season ranked t-16th in the nation and t-2nd in the AAC in sacks per game with 0.75, his 7.5 total sacks and 12.5 TFL rank as the second most on the team all season ... lettered.

oooh I like that! 260 lbs seems to fit the mold Pry is looking for. Shrink that pocket big man!

I'm sad I had to google that.

Great get by the staff. Welcome to the Hokies!

I'm loving that we are sizing up (literally) on the lines lately. Should really help us going forward.

I want to nickname him Darth. Darth Varner.

I would like to with draw this from the floor for consideration.

It might fit more now. He left the good guys to join the dark side.

With 7.5 sacks last year I'm suprised he wasn't more highly-rated in the transfer portal, but I'm guessing Temple's football program and the AAC conference in general don't get a lot of respect?

All due respect, Jaden Blue lit it up at Temple... not so much here.

Wasn't he dealing with injuries? Also not like anyone on the offensive side of the ball lit it up for us this year.

Was less than a minute behind sharing the same idea. Thank you for linking the article as well.

He had one really good year at Temple. Other years were so-so

All due respect, his father also passed away while transitioning to a new team that didn't light up the stat sheet.

As someone that listens to a lot of Philly sports talk radio, whenever Temple came up this kid's name was always mentioned.

Good get

Any one else think he looks at least a little like Corey Moore?

He said give to me Roscoe

A little , but without the crazy eyes.

If he plays like Moore, I won't be upset about not having him Terror Eyes the OL

Sign me up for the second coming of Corey Moore, Terror Eyes (I love it, especially for the double meaning!) or not!

edit: they're actually a bunch of liars

Should he really use "committed" in his messaging? It's kinda of lost some meaning.

So help me if he becomes the next JJ Watt.

We put the K in Kwality

LOL was just about to post....so like the letter of intent meant nothing?

So confused...you're no longer in the transfer portal, but you've been contacted by other schools and leave after leaving the transfer portal? Am I getting this?

Did he not sign on signing day? I mean Pry will probably let him out of it if he did but damn. If he is this flaky, I think we will be fine without him.

What the fuck. Gotta be NIL with those winters.

Also explains why we're after so many DE's

Because we have zero proven/productive guys returning at DE.

"That's it guys. Let's get out of here. That cold drink's waitin' on us, let's go." - Mike Young after win no. 300.

Was he going to play DE? They listed him at 280 on signing day, which is pretty hefty for DE I think

I think Pry indicated he could slide down to tackle. I was just responding to us recruiting DEs. We've got some young players on the DL, but those 4 spots as a whole make me very nervous. We didn't have a P5 caliber DL on the team last year in my opinion, and we've got even less depth this year.

"That's it guys. Let's get out of here. That cold drink's waitin' on us, let's go." - Mike Young after win no. 300.

Any chance he wasn't academically eligible or we released him from his NLI?

I like it. Scandalous. Rumors become reality. /s

We put the K in Kwality

I mean I'm pretty confident we had to release him from the nli but idk what the reasoning is. Pretty much have to release a guy

(add if applicable) /s

IIRC, no LOI for portal guys. They sign a Grant in Aid which binds the school but not the player. Whether VT initiated this I have no idea but I'm pretty sure there is no paperwork issue.

So we need to be worried about Drones, Jennings, and Felton I guess until classes start.

Similarly, Zeke Wimbush signed a Grant in Aid as well. So while he's not bound to VT, VT is bound to him...we just don't know the timeframe.

This seems pretty one-sided. University is legally bound, has filled all slots so can't effectively recruit in case someone backs out like this, has to continue spending precious resources actively courting guys all the way up to first day of classes.

I would hope something changes. Maybe a post signing day poach would require poaching U to pay a buy out of some sort?

So we need to be worried about Drones, Jennings, and Felton I guess until classes start.

Hmmm. When do classes start at VT again?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

January 17. Guess I'd better start setting up the Canvas site for my spring class...

"Exit light..."

I'm sure you will, but please make sure you properly proof the syllabus & schedule... I had so many professors that goofed on those during my master's program and had multiple professors make schedule and expectation-shifting changes mid-way through the semester... absolutely infuriating.

Had one professor during my masters program forget when classes started and we started a week late and had to make up a class on a random day. Lol

the worst one I had was a professor who flagged the last homework assessment as optional during the final weeks of the course. The class went about 3/4 days before someone (me) asked to confirm that it was optional, found out it was a goof on his end for not properly updating canvas from the last semester, and still made it due by the end of the week... needless to say he got some harsh feedback at the end of the semester.

Wow that sucks. I had a professor in my grad program who missed a day for some reason (we never heard why) and he decided to schedule a make-up class on a Saturday. It was horrible lol

So does he get added to the Outgoing Transfer forum now? /s

Hokies legend Darian Varner

On Mt. Rushmore with Drew Harris.

Dwayne Lawson must be close to that list too right?

Would Cam Goode qualify? I can't remember those circumstances.

Apparently Mr. Goode was unamused with all the conditioning when he got here. Ironically, when he started doing well at UCF, he credited a coach/mentor for staying on him and making him get in better shape. Then he grad transferred to Michigan this past year to play in 5 games and rack up 8 tackles. Interesting road for sure.

My sauces said Goode did what "Big" Jimmy Williams did - the JUCO from back in the day. I'm told they both told the strength staff to fuck themselves after a work out. Goode was effectively done after that. Wiles telling him he couldn't play for VT didn't help matters, but his fate was sealed.

Think both sides could have handled things better. Goode certainly didn't come in with a lot of maturity or discipline, but I think our staff gave up on him way too quick. You have to figure out how different people learn and what motivates them. I'm sure with our wonderful my way or the highway staff under Fu they fired right back and told him to gtfo. Shame.

Yeah it's a little worse than this. Staff tried to motivate him by having the whole dline room do extra workouts/sprints as punishment with him when he slacked off and he didn't give a crap. "Do it for your brothers" fell on deaf ears. Ended up souring the camaraderie to where other players wanted him gone, too. #Sauces

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

There are far better guys to put on that list than Lawson. He was actually on the VT roster for a season and actually played in 4 games.

10-4. Well, how about Todd Nolen and Deveon Simmons? They are closer to when I first followed recruiting that are closer to the criteria you're describing.

The portal giveth, the portal taketh away.

These recruits like to say "respect my decision," then some of them pull this bullshit. Not a great way to go through life.

This right here.

Sooner or later you're gonna lose everything that makes you worthy of being wooed. Learn how to commit to something before that happens.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Yeah I keep making the analogy of college recruits to professional job hunting: this feels like when someone has a start date set with one company, but accepts an offer from another company before the start date. Like you can technically get away with it, but you're going to burn some bridges doing it.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I did that once. I had a part time offer and a start date ready to go, even already went to orientation, but then a FT position that I had interviewed for weeks earlier finally got back to me and offered me the job. Several years later, I reapplied to the first job, when it became a full time position, got it, and am there now.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Slightly different situation. Most employers will understand going from PT to FT and not begrudge you especially if you explained it that way.

This was FT to FT and ducking out the back door.

You almost wish that there would be some governing body? maybe they could work out of say- Indianapolis- middle of the country? They could be in charge of things like transfer rules, competitive balance, risk mitigation, fair play, academic integrity in sports programs, etc. I wonder why we don't have something like that? It's a shame.

Sarcasm Level =Expert. Love it.

Or at least one with half a spine to do something. As stated above, I love the sarcasm in this one.

Agree with the analogy - A lot of people feel differently about it. I've heard some people basically say your employer doesn't give a fuck about you, so you need to do what's right for you. Others say don't sign offer if you might leave it behind.

That said, I don't have any anger for what this kid did. He did what's best for him. I don't blame him.

so you need to do what's right for you. Others say don't sign offer if you might leave it behind.

I mean I think both are true. There's some nuance here, but I personally think it's a bad look to renege an accepted offer in most scenarios.

Just for example, I had a time where I put in my notice for a job but agreed to stay longer to train my incoming replacement. That replacement reneged at the last minute so I ended up delaying my transition longer for basically no reason. I'm no corporate bootlicker, but I think conducting yourself in that way can screw real people over and is not a good look.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

We talkin' bout a fickle pickle right there!!

i don't think any coach has pressure on him like JC Price. with the shape our DL is in, that dude is recruiting over the next 11 months to save his job.

Assuming everyone is playing by the rules (Big assumption here), was Nebraska allowed to reach out to him after he signed the financial aid agreement?

It is supposed to be hands off after signing an LOI.

Thanks for posting the article. I wasn't aware this was a thing.

I am all in favor of empowering the athletes, but do most coaches hold a kid to an LOI if they really don't want to be there? Or is this more a means for the athlete to slow play the recruiting process to see if there are better opportunities forth coming?

One of the few things I agree with Justin Fuente on. Do you want to fucking come here or not? oh, you aren't sure? Fuck Off. Go to Wisky. We are moving on. I agree with Fu on that. We spend millions in recruiting. How many hours did we spend recruiting this kid? And the shiny object comes and he leaves. Fuck that. This shit drives up ticket prices, etc. The cost to run a program is past to boosters and fans. Make no mistake.

I'm frustrated by this too, but I respectfully think you might want to get some fresh air.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Jim Harbaugh. Michigan Man.. Gotten them to the playoffs twice. Will leave for the NFL the moment a good offer comes. Why? This shit. David Shaw.. once upon a time won 80% of his games. Retired this season. Why? because stanford was down a couple years? nah.. this shit.

Jim Harbaugh. Michigan Man.. Gotten them to the playoffs twice. Will leave for the NFL the moment a good offer comes. Why? This shit.

Not true at all - I recommend reading The Hot Seat by Ben Mathis-Lilley. You'll see a few quotes from Jim Harbaugh where he talks about his burning desire to be the best in the world, and the best coach in the world wins a superbowl; not a college football playoff.

David Shaw.. once upon a time won 80% of his games. Retired this season. Why? because stanford was down a couple years? nah.. this shit.

David Shaw left Stanford because Stanford doesn't want to compete in an NIL/Transfer Portal world. Not necessarily because David Shaw doesn't. He has also spent his whole career in the NFL prior to Stanford, so he was never really a college guy to begin with.

Sure, there's other examples - Roy Williams comes to mind - but the sport has always evolved and changed over it's 150+ year history. It will continue to do so.

Stanford doesn't want to compete in an NIL/Transfer Portal world

Quite frankly, the more time passes, the more I respect that decision and wouldn't be opposed to VT following suit

We're gonna need to hit Wave 2 hard.

Everyone knew this shit was coming. When you downplay/minimize the value of a world class education, food, board, exposure, coaching, medical and academic support and call it slavery long enough, changes will be made. When you falsely claim that college football players generate billions in revenue (all while saying VT can't pay for facilities because we have no money- lol), when you support the entitlement theory that throwing a football equates to an 18 year old making 80% more than the average US salary in pay, etc, etc. You get this. You get a system created on emotion, falsehoods, and jealosy. Fans that work middle class jobs can't fathom Brent Pry making 6 mil a year and the QB playing for his 200K scholarship. So you get NFL lite, free agency, free for all, pay for play. Enjoy.

lol commits and 'signs' with VT, including a full on ceremony and everything, and then ends up going somewhere else just a couple weeks later.

Yeah, when people ask why I am rapidly losing interest in college sports, this kind of shit is exactly why.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

This is the way of the sport now- athletes have freedom of movement to do what is best for them.

To stay competitive, VT needs to make a value proposition that going to VT is in their best interest- like most of us on this board did as students. Who cares if he "committed"? People change jobs and schools all the time.

VT 2016
Go Hokies

Yeah, when people ask why I am rapidly losing interest in college sports, this kind of shit is exactly why.

So one player basically backs out of a job offer, and that causes you to lose interest in the entire sport?

I read it a bit differently, more like "This is an example of why I'm losing interest in college sports." type thing. And honestly I don't disagree with that stance.

Not necessarily kids getting paid because sure they should be getting a piece of the pie, but the NCAA literally just throwing their hands ups with all this is frustrating and leaving loopholes that are being absolutely exploited.

They're not going to be fixed until it's too late (probably already is) so Alum and myself are just succumbing to the fact we'll always be playing from behind in athletics

Yep the NCAA is basically going "we don't fucking care anymore" and they're allowing the inmates to run the asylum. There are no rules, there are no guidelines. There is just the filthy fucking rich and everyone else, and if you're not filthy fucking rich, well, enjoy the breadcrumbs you fucking plebe.

Virginia Tech, as a major player in college sports is done, as is probably everyone in the ACC. If this is about money and only about money, we cannot compete. Period, we can't, and we are legally bound to an agreement that traps us all for the next decade. All the while the rich get richer, and we get stepped on.

I'm done. I don't see how anyone who isn't a fan of a Big Ten or SEC school isn't completely done with college sports anymore. Its only a matter of time before everyone is fucked at their expense.

And this is just one example of why I am so far done with college athletics in general. There are more, but this kind of shit shines the most obvious light on it.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

yep. until the TV bubble bursts or is re-adjusted, the ACC is fucked. Maryland was a charter member and couldn't leave soon enough- smart. Rutgers makes 2X what VT does in TV money. it's a joke.

I'm done. I don't see how anyone who isn't a fan of a Big Ten or SEC school isn't completely done with college sports anymore. Its only a matter of time before everyone is fucked at their expense.

Preach it, brother.

Have you heard about the season TCU is having?

Or Utah

TCU set the blueprint to punch up this year. Other programs like Utah have found a way to consistently play winning, entertaining football in the shifting environment of college football for a long time. Penn State is probably the far end of the possible level VT can reach, but still a goal that can be reasonably shot for, unlike Georgia level.

If we got to a Utah-ish level, which is completely attainable in the current portal/NIL environment, I think most VT fans would be generally a lot happier and less prone to these reactions.

What do 2022 TCU, last couple years Utah and PSU have in common? A gritty, good, fucking winning QB.. a "guy" at that position to build an offense around. TCU was 2-10 last year. Duggan fucking balled this year- there is your answer.

A good to great QB covers a lot of warts. Can you imagine how bad 08-10 could have been if we didn't have Tyrod? Look at the impact Evans had in 2016 to a team that went 7-6 the two previous years.

A couple top 20 recruiting classes for TCU didn't hurt either. Wonder how long that will last in this new NIL environment.

TCU also has some super wealthy donors with more money than they know what to do with that help mitigate the financial detriment they would otherwise be feeling right now. But even that won't last, and when that kind of backing is no longer able to keep up with the accumulation of wealth that the B1G and SEC schools are only beginning to take on, its game over for even them, too.

Right now what we're feeling is pretty much the last sparks of how college athletics used to be before everything fully collapses into the Power 2. Clemson imploding and not being able to keep up financially with South Carolina despite the run they just had is the shot across the bow to everyone not in the Big Ten or SEC. The tide has already shifted, its already too late to adjust, and if you're not in the in crowd, you're already left behind.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

TCU has also gotten 3 5 star transfers from Alabama......Wealthy Donors and immediate playing time are probably a good combination after a very successful year on the field

TCU is also using a Senior/5th/6th year laden team with a a great offensive mind as a HC who is catching lightning in a bottle and I couldn't be rooting harder for them.

All that being said once the covid lump in athletics finally graduates we'll see everyone regress to the norm which is rich get richer and the rest of us get to shit in our hands and clap

Agree with this.

Which is why I've been investing more of my football time in NFL than CFB.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Disingenuous. Enough with comparing this to a BA ad on linked in. It's dishonest. a -little- more nuanced with regards to how major college football programs run and the rules within. Comparing this to a want ad from craigslist is bunk.

It's dishonest. a -little- more nuanced with regards to how major college football programs run and the rules within.

This (IMO) gets to the root of the problem: Fans are conditioned to think that choosing a college is a deeply emotional decision because (a) it was for a lot of us, and (b) the NCAA and the media has conditioned us to think that way. They reality is, for decades now, this has largely been a farce; players have making a 'business decisions' this whole time. However, many fans are just now discovering/coming to terms with this.

I recognize that part of the allure of college sports is that the players are much more relatable than NFL players, and the above revelation shatters many fans' perception of college athletics. BUT, if you can take a step back and realize that even though your viewpoint of the sport is changing, but the actual sport isn't changing that much, you can still find a lot of enjoyment.

I'm sympathetic to frustrations around rivalries being broken up and post season changes, but I don't think it's rational to change one's view of the sport just because a player can now openly collect a paycheck.

Guys, the last month and a half of VT football has been very positive. We cannot let one DL, who is currently injured, going elsewhere set the whole building on fire.

It sucks. It seemed like he might be a good player for us, potentially. There is plenty of time in this window and the Spring window to find another DL or 2.

I'm not any more upset about him backing out after signing whatever he signed on signing day than I would be if he flipped on signing day. That shit happens all the time and there's no reason to lose sleep over it.

What I am upset about is the fact that this is just another few feet into the downward spiral of college football. This is never what it was meant to be and the divide between the haves and have-nots will continue to widen with the 1-2 punch of the portal and NIL.

I feel like most are upset about the same.

More and more I think about nixing my season tickets and Hokie Club membership because I just don't want to play into it anymore. I just want to support the guys who go to my school for an education and happen to be decent ballplayers. But, this moneyball keeps snowballing and snowballing down the never-ending slope. I'm so close to being done with it all. Create a D league for all the players that DGAF about school and be done with it already.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

This is never what it was meant to be and the divide between the haves and have-nots will continue to widen with the 1-2 punch of the portal and NIL.

I bet that it will stay exactly the same as it has for the last two decades.

I just want to support the guys who go to my school for an education and happen to be decent ballplayers.

Get your head out of the sand, man. It's literally never been this way. David Wilson and Tyrod got cars for choosing VT. For the last 3 decades, its been a business decision for most players. And that will remain the case.

I mean, sure, it hasn't been that way in ages. But it damned sure started that way. And just because it's been that way for decades doesn't make it right. Collegiate football should be about the school, not money. And ever since it became about money it has been less and less like college football and more like a professional sport with each passing year. So, I say, we stop pretending like college football has anything to do with the schools and create a damned D league for the NFL already.

But that doesn't mean my head is in the sand. Am I under any illusions any of that will happen? Fuck, no.

It's just my humble opinion.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

And just because it's been that way for decades doesn't make it right.

And I'm not saying it is/was 'right' (or wrong).

I'm saying no one was complaining about college athletes getting paid a decade ago because they had (what I call) plausible deniability - they could pretend that this wasn't a business. Now, fans no longer have plausible deniability. Fans aren't angry that the sport has changed (because it hasn't); they are angry that their pretend world has collapsed.

I believe this is illogical.

Um, I've been a VT for about 35 years. Probably 30 of which I was cognizant of what goes on behind the scenes in recruiting. Plenty of people have been complaining about the money in college football for years. Especially, if you've been a Hokie fan for more than 5 minutes because we never had the money. The pretend world has to first exist before you can mourn its collapse. We caught lightning in a bottle and were able to pretend for one year. Maybe two if Vick doesn't get hurt. And the more money gets pumped into the game the more that will be a fantasy for us.

If you play it, they will win.

Narrator: "It did not, in fact, start that way"

Athletes during the early and mid-1900's were routinely recruited and paid to play; and there were several instances where individuals representing the schools were not enrolled as students.

Until:

In 1948, the NCAA adopted a "Sanity Code" that limited financial aid for athletes to tuition and fees, and required that aid otherwise be given based on need (5). In the early 1950's, with the threat of several southern schools bolting from the NCAA, the code was revised to allow athletic scholarships to cover tuition, fees, and a living stipend.

https://thesportjournal.org/article/pointcounterpoint-paying-college-ath...

And also:

For more than six decades the NCAA has defined "student-athletes" as amateurs so that its member institutions could avoid paying workers' compensation to injured athletes. The origins of the term can be traced back to a Colorado Supreme Court case, University of Denver v. Nemeth (1953). In 1950, Ernest Nemeth, a football player at the University Denver, suffered an injury during spring practice. He filed a claim against the university alleging that he was hired by the school to play football and that his injury was a result of his employment. Three years later, the Colorado Supreme Court upheld a ruling by the state Industrial Commission that Nemeth was indeed an employee as defined by Colorado's worker's compensation statute. The Court determined that Nemeth's compensation for playing footballโ€”an athletic scholarship, housing, meals, and a campus jobโ€”was contingent upon his ability to perform on the field, and therefore the university was obligated to provide workers' compensation for his football-related injury.

After the Nemeth case, the NCAA recognized that its member schools were vulnerable in worker's compensation cases. In response, the NCAA manufactured the "student-athlete" label. Walter Byers, then the Executive Director of the NCAA, later wrote, "we crafted the term student-athlete and soon it was embedded in all NCAA rules and interpretations as a mandated substitute for such words as players and athletes." Soon the press began using the term, inscribing it into the national consciousness. By 1956, when schools first started offering recruits scholarships solely for their athletic ability, the New York Times described football and basketball players as "student athletes." In constructing the "student-athlete," the NCAA successfully convinced fans, sportswriters, and players to embrace the mythology of amateurism.

Why does Wisky want him?

The same reason we did, but their roster might be in a position to better gamble on his immediate fall availability. I'm not familiar enough with their roster to say for sure, but I'd guess their DL situation is a little better than ours. Again, we still have plenty of time to rectify this.

Pretty sure if it was the other way around, we would all be thrilled. It isn't great, but Luke Fickell track record > B. Pry at this point. This guy wants to get to the league, I can understand wanting the best situation. Disappointing, especially since IIRC he is the only DL recruit we got thru the portal, and I hope we target more, but it doesn't really move the needle for me that he changed his mind. I do that all the time. Have changed jobs soon after taking one.
It sucks, doesn't look great, but if you know, you know. Good luck to him.

I hate rude behavior in a man. Won't tolerate it.

one click shows Wagoneer's been around TKP for 7 years. Sheesh. Everyone take a nap, have a snickers or something.

I doubt it will ever be the other way around because the ACC doesn't give us the funding to have the payouts to make that happen.

I'll be honest I don't know most of the players on VT football or basketball anymore, largely because they come and go as easy as this.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I agree. Part of what made following VT football as a kid, a student, and then after graduation was watching the players develop. Now we grab a guy from the portal, they play for a year, then they either graduate or transfer. It makes my head spin. At least in pro sports there are contracts which keep people around for more than a year. But now in college football everyone is a free agent all the time.

The bottom line is, he will now never receive the blessing of being a Hokie for life.

Looks like Varner burned some bridges with the coaches on the way out.

Honestly?

Good.

Well said.

Totally. My wife teaches Civics and whenever they go over "Freedom of Speech" she has to stress that although you have a lot of leeway to say what you want without legal repercussions, you absolutely are open to..........feedback...........from those who may not agree.

Yep- I'd be fucking pissed. You are dealing with humans here. Some coach drove in his car from blackburg to philly to kiss his ass. Pry did an in home with half of his staff. You would be pissed too. And while we are on this topic- if you don't think a regular business gets pissed at someone they spent time interviewing, etc declines their offer after accepting it, you are fooling yourself.

And while we are on this topic- if you don't think a regular business gets pissed at someone they spent time interviewing, etc declines their offer after accepting it, you are fooling yourself.

Depends on the business. McKinsey isn't that mad when 2 of their 100 new hires wind up at Bane and tell them last minute. But when a 200 person company hires you to fill a very specific role, then yea, they're going to be pissed.

And while we are on this topic- if you don't think a regular business gets pissed at someone they spent time interviewing, etc declines their offer after accepting it, you are fooling yourself.

We've had people just not show up to work on their first day after accepting our offer, only to find out they had taken another one after accepting ours. And yes, when that happens, we blacklist those people from ever interviewing for a job with the company again.

I agree on all fronts. Not to mention his "commitment" influences the coaches desire and opportunity to recruit others in that position. By backing out on his "commitment" VT gets double screwed by missing out on this kid coming to school as well as at other kids who might have come if this had not been first. As a person and a player in receipt of others time and energy respecting that investment matters. It demonstrates how they think about themselves and others.

I don't say this much, but the lack of honor and ethics here is dumbfounding. I get all the counter arguments, but if you aren't "committed" then don't commit publicly or privately. Period - end of discussion.

If kids want to be paid and have real-life scenarios these things will matter and may not impact the glory of that moment, but will influence others and the future opportunities in quantity and quality.

I'm gonna laugh when his peak is his recruiting process vs. his play. I don't wish anything bad, but do think this is a character indication and it ain't good.

If kids want to be paid and have real-life scenarios these things will matter

Imo this is one of the arguments for paying players a salary and making it a professional league. Take away all the bullshit of committing, and just make it a job offer.

He also was still shopping and planning visits after he committed to Tech. Then why commit.

Varner said he kept his options open and continued to talk to schools, particularly Wisconsin, Auburn and Ole Miss. He even planned on visiting Ole Miss

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Possibly to hold his spot. I wonder if Pry told him if he wanted in, he needed to commit or they were moving on. Tech appeared to be the fall back.

Because the girl at the prom with a date is more attractive than the girl without one looking for anyone to dance with. Recruits commit to schools to raise their profile- so the school they really want to go to shows interest. Been happening for years.

Yep he used VT for clout and a backup plan while he was still shopping for his top choice/best NIL deal. Makes perfect sense for a guy in his position given the current rules.

It's a pretty scummy move and coaches have a right to be pissed, but also gotta hate the game more than the player in this case imo.

At least he shown his true colors early on. Rather this than a Trevon Hill situation where one bad apple can poison a team.

Oh yes, I would really rather avoid another Trevon Hill situation. That would really ruin the culture rebuild Pry is attempting to do.

Yep. First thing you know, you've got a Hill on the team. Next thing you know, Turkey bacon. It's a slippery slope from there.

But what about Turkey Hill? That's pretty decent for grocery store ice cream.

Beamer managed Hill fine. We need more on field guys like Hill honestly. He could actually get to the passer on a critical 3rd down. He was a talented, ACC level DE.. not an abundance of those recently in blacksburg. I blame Whit on this one. Let's schedule a game/series in a high school stadium in the 757 against a program that has been told they weren't good enough to go to VT. Let's do that- on purpose. So when we travel there, its super extra emotional for kids like Hill, so he shows his ass when predictably we give up 600 yards passing to a JUCO QB and can't make a tackle. If that game was played in Iowa, Hill would never have given a shit, and just went to the bench and shook his head. But no, lets take a bunch of emotional kids to their backyard- a backyard that is all about pride and lets throw them into the fire of a no win game. Brilliant fucking move. Congrats. Did zero positive for the program. zero.

Because he was in a position of strength and committing to VT was a win-win for him?

Oh this is what we are doing now? Cool - when Pry cuts Cole Beck cold because he sucks, you will be cool with it. Agree

Hat tip. But tell me i'm wrong?

You're wrong dude. About almost everything you've said on this thread. You've had this smug "This is how it is" attitude on every comment on this thread and what's crazy is that everything you've said is wrong - about this, about the Hill situation, about TCU going 2-10 last season and Duggan being the difference for them this season, etc etc. It's actually kinda comical to watch lol, it's weird noone else is saying anything.

I mean I hear you but I'll say this - Wilson tends to the extreme but there is usually a kernel in there that'll resonate. They just don't, as my family would say, "have a filter."

Now I can't honestly say I've paid that much attention to everything they've posted here, I imagine it's a lot and a lot of it has nothing to do with the actual topic in the title of the thread; mostly tangents on the current state of collegiate athletics. But regardless he typically has fully thought out responses that further discussion as request by the CGs (possibly antagonistically, sure and typically one that I don't find interesting - but I digress). This comment however is merely voicing an opinion without any further discussion. What's wrong with TCU? Is Duggan not the reason for their success? As cynical as it usually is Wilson's worldview tends to be in the ballpark - maybe not on beck (but I don't know why it's event worth the breath in our lungs (or strength in thumbs) to even argue about)

I'm still figuring this out.

Eh. Controversial or negative opinions I can deal with. I personally don't like that he talks out of his ass constantly. I don't think it's helpful to spout out nonsense constantly and have entire threads going off on breaking down his bullshit.

TCU didn't go 2-10 last year? Really? what was their record? .You are what's wrong with forums like this. And while you call me out for all knowing, Cole is in fact off scholarship - lol- I was really wrong about that.. and give us all what really happened with hill? Im waiting.

Not surprisingly, you (and someone else apparently) missed the point completely.

The question was if he was still looking, "then why commit?". The answer is, duh, because it was a win-win for him to commit to VT. No more, no less. I wasn't putting a value judgement on it one way or the other.

The rules put grad transfers in a position of almost total negotiating strength now. This guy (or his family or advisor) figured out what apparently some players/fans haven't yet. The only option as I see it is for VT is to not take a transfer if they're still looking. I doubt that strategy would end well.

I'm sure VT will be the beneficiary of this rules flaw at some point (if not already...am I forgetting one?).

Because he wants the "glory" of committing without actually having to make a decision. All about me mentality

I really wish sticks were cheap enough that I could do this occasionally and not feel the pain of it.

Yeah, that would feel nice. But definitely not realistic, at least not for the amateur player.

If he don't want to be here

Yeah leg.

I think the reason most people are frustrated with it is the timing of it and who we may have backed off of or not pursued bc he said he was coming here. Even participated in signing day.

To then back out at the 11th hour is maddening.

Like has been said he does have some injury issues that may keep him from participating this year so not a huge loss but a bigger loss opportunity wise for the issues mentioned above.

If the NCAA had balls, they should simply add a rule to the Tranfer Portal stuff.

You can enter the Transfer Portal one time in a given year. If you enter the portal, you get Free Agent treatment and choose the school you wish to transfer to. But, once you "commit"/sign, you're done and out. No re-entering the portal, if you decide to de-commit and go to another school, you lose a year of eligibility.

I would love that.

Yes this. However we know the NCAA will never do anything. But some sort of regulation besides the open and closing dates and when and who can reach out to you should be implemented.

They are just the worst.

Your ideas are great. I recommend you for a hire.
