Round 2
The Hokies are coming off a good win at home but now face a Miami squad that is on six game winning streak. The Hurricanes though do lose on the road, having a 7-5 away record, compared to 15-0 at home.

Coach giving himself the L
The Hurricanes are coached by Jim Larranaga, who is in his tenth season as head coach at Miami. Larranaga is 247-146 overall guiding the Hurricanes. Prior to Miami, Larranaga had a 14-year run at George Mason where he took the Patriots to the Final Four in 2006. He has led the 'Canes to four NCAA Tournament appearances and an ACC title in 2013.
Defensively, Coach Larranaga primarily employs man-to-man, with the scramble 3-2 zone as a secondary defense. A combination of the two is a series of zones that he calls the Camouflage, which is used strategically as a surprise defense that forces the offense to react to the defense. Once the opponent gets used to a man-to-man and the scramble, the Camouflage defense puts them on their heels immediately. The Camouflage is used most in a full court setting. Each pass, trap, deflection and player responsibility is analyzed.
When they play man-to-man defense, the focus is retaining inside position to facilitate defensive rebounding and limiting second chance opportunities. The ability to box out was also a huge component of Pitt's game plan against the Hokies. Limiting the Hokies second chances will be a huge focus for the Hurricanes.
Offensively, Coach Larranaga typically has his teams playing a form of Zone offense with a specific focus on the use of ball screens to give shooters separation. He emphasizes ball movement, man movement, screening, dribble penetration, and offensive rebounding.
Based on the defensive setting of their opponent, Miami uses three variations of the zone offenses. These are:
Slice & Dice Zone Offense โ Use versus a 2-3, 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone. This offense uses four players on the perimeter and one post to force the defense to move, communicate and change their match ups.
Crack & Carve Zone Offense โ Use versus a 2-3, 3-2 or 1-2-2 zone. This power game offense utilizes two post players inside and allows them to carve out space, set screens and create good shots for themselves and the perimeter players.
Seek & Find Zone Offense โ Use versus a 1-3-1 defense. This offense uses a 4-Out formation and diagonal passing, down screens, back screens and penetration to break down the zone and create open shots. After the game against Pitt expect this to be a common approach against the Hokies for any team with solid perimeter shooters.

What to expect from Miami?
Isaiah Wong continues to make a case for ACC Player of the Year. In their last game against Wake, Wong put the game away early in the second half by scoring 13 straight while Miami held Wake scoreless. Wong leads the way at 16.4 points per game. Nine players are getting 10 or more minutes a contest so a fairly balanced workload.
As a team the Hurricanes are shooting 38% from the perimeter on 20 attempts per game in ACC play. Wong and Miller are their consistent perimeter shooters. In the first game the Hokies played zero defense and Miami shot 58% from inside and 42% from outside.
Miami has been consistently out-rebounded in ACC play, mainly due to their size, although the Hokies failed to take advantage in the first contest. The first game finished a 26-21 advantage to the Hurricanes. Outside of Walker and Omier their lineup are all 6'7 or smaller. They are however well balanced in this category, as all nine players average at least three rebounds. They are led by Walker and Wong, who both average better than 5 rebounds per game. Brooks and Walker both average almost one block per contest, with the team better than four per game.

The Hokies
The Hokies need to focus on getting Basile or Mutts the ball down low. The Hurricanes smaller lineup has made it very difficult for them to protect inside. Offense was not the issue first time out as the Hokies shot 57% inside and 43% outside. You couldn't even blame the officials as the Hokies had a 20-17 FT attempt advantage.
Coach Young will have Cattoor green lighted tonight. Miami has held few opponents under 35% from outside. Mutts at the top of the key can be a disruptive force in this game both scoring and passing.
Tech needs to protect the basketball, especially Mutts and Pedulla. Miami forces opponents into 12.8 turnovers per game in ACC play and convert 13 points per game in transition.
The Hokies must slow down Wong, who has the dual ability to shoot from the perimeter but is more likely to beat defenders off the dribble to the basket. Beyond that there has to be consistent defensive effort throughout the game. No taking possessions off.
Basile, Kidd and Mutts must be able to position themselves inside to get offensive rebounds. Miami opponents right now average 11.6 offensive rebounds per game on thirty-two missed shot attempts. Last time out the Hokies got TWO offensive rebounds. Unfortunately this seems to be more and more what Coach Young and staff plan for and it's a serious disadvantage in ACC play.
Highlight of the Game
Basile back at it with 22 points on 8/13 shooting but the quiet star was Mylygael Poteat, who had 15 points off the bench, hitting 4/5 and 7-9 free throws. The foul difference alone impacted the game.
In Closing
The Hokies must avoid going under screens (read please play some 2-3 zone) and must force Miami inside the perimeter so we don't repeat the 24 perimeter points for the Canes.
The Hokies must find a way to balance out the rebounds. They have a major size advantage and after what we saw from Poteat against Pitt, we have to hope he gets more run to do similar things.
Have to hope the Hokies have more to tap into after the Pitt game. Knocking another team from the #2 spot in the ACC should be a trend.

LET'S GO.....
HOKIES
Here's to hoping we continue our streak of playing well against top ACC teams lol
I can't believe Rece Davis got stuck on this game.
Well ESPN keeps firing everyone so they stretch the people they keep. Not much football going on now so he has to do something
Neither can I but I'll take it. It's refreshing to have an announcer who genuinely loves blacksburg on the call.
Really happy to see them pounding the paint
I see the Cassell Guard is showing out with their white t-shirts.
This is a white out game by the way!
But it never ceases to amaze me how many people don't get the memo. How can you call yourself a HOKIE fan and not know what color to wear on effect games? This is for football and basketball both. I've seen maroon out games and somebody wear a green t-shirt. Or yellow. What's up with that? SMH
Letting Pack hit from 35 feet again smh
Rodney Rice sighting
Wow totally missed that Rice was back. He was still on the injury report an hour before game
He looks way off pace
Clanking shots and errant turnovers....that's the VT I know and love
Was gonna say where is my inefficient team!? Buzz would love the paint touches in the first ten min and be abhorred in the last 5
I'm so tired of Isaiah Wong. Is he done after this year?
Basile should NEVER dribble
Or mutts ๐
Once again, Kidd should not shoot further than under the basket
Sit Kidd for Poteat at all costs
Kidd is 4/5 from the field with 9 points?
Dude misses dunks, can't shoot beyond 3 feet, turns the ball over. He's a big body that is serviceable around the basket but otherwise a liability
Not sure why you're hating on Kidd every game but the dude gives us great minutes off the bench. Maybe just appreciate what he brings to the team.
Every game? Literally the past two. Otherwise never comment in these threads.
And that's the point of my comments, I think other players off the bench bring way more to the team on the floor.
Defense still lacking. Letting this much smaller team get to the rim at will. More Poteat please
I think Poteat used up all his magic last game. That guy on Miami has bodied him a few times. Not used to seeing Poteat get bullied around in the post!
Not a terrible first half all said, but you have to finish the half against good teams... and we certainly didnt.
Sad state of affairs that there are only ten people tracking the game on here. Says alot about the season, especially this being a ranked Miami team.
I feel like CMY needs to substitute better. Like we were up by 8 and rolling, and he pulls Basile and Mutts for Poteat and Rice. Miami quickly closes and pulls ahead...Rice is not in ACC ball mode at this point and IMO shouldn't be getting major minutes, even though I'm excited about his future.
We didn't even come out after halftime, Jesus.
Clear foul not called there
Unnecessary forceful contact
Collins is gonna have CTE by the end of this season
Why are basketball refs so awful all the time? Clear foul on Collins, no whistle. Basile slides his feet playing great defense, blocking.
Good thing I'm not a player or a coach... I'd been done hit me a referee!!!
Basile a walking turnover this game
Hate that we took Pedulla out right as he was gathering some steam
Basile jesus value the ball and play a little defense
Each game is a microcosm of the season... Really bad and really good all at the same time.
That foul was garbage especially with the physical contact they just let the Miami guard employ the entire length of the floor
Very inconsistent; just when you think ok I guess they're letting them play they call a touch foul
Sloppy
I don't know what's up with us. We look like we're playing in slow motion.
How'd they call that on Kidd??
I think the most interesting part of the CMY era is the shear lack of athleticism by his teams. His system definitely works to put players in the best positions to succeed, but each and every night (particularly against ACC competition) it is abundantly clear that the team lacks P5 athleticism.
Hey Rob, do we ever play zone? This game is one where it feels like we're getting blown by and taken one on one down low every time would be nice to plant someone down low
Unfortunately no. I called for it in my writeup. There have been several games it has come back to bite us. Georgia Tech, Miami, even BC. These smaller lineups always get a step on us. It's also unreal how we struggle to rebound, even defensively against the small teams. COC, BC and Miami stand out there.
Mutts had clear lane but Jack's up a three...ugh
Basile is a lot of things
A good block out player is not one of them.
Basile not even trying to rebound...
To be fair we had three guys standing still in the lane while their small guard weaved in to take the rebound from all of them.
It's like they assume they are big enough to just get the ball to drop to them
They've doubled their season average for offensive rebounds.
Don't like that
Fortunately it's not helping them that much. We're up 7 - 3 on second chance points.
But I still don't like it!
I hate this staff not having the team follow their shots. The three goes up from Pedulla and you see every Hokie already running back. It's even more aggregious against the small teams. Get 10 offensive rebounds and flip the possession game so if you only hit 3 or 4 that's a six to 12 point swing.
Basile making the worst decisions all game;
Pack always seems to make everything against us
I mean he blocked Basile's fall down, spin, throw.
Win or lose. We get bacon.
Rebounding... rebounding... rebounding... SMH
Rebounds rebounds rebounds...bane of our existence both ends
BACON ๐ฅ
6-1 all time when bacon is served
Let Miami walk in the lane which leads to the foul...smdh
Miller goes through three Hokies to score.
Cattor folded like a lawn chair on his cut and no call
Basile getting worked by a 6'7 guy
To be fair, just about everyone works Basile, so...
Including Basile
Insane how different the looks this game. Last game dunking and ferocious moving feet well on defense.
This game, careless, slow, bad defense, poor offensive decisions, can't make an open 3
Mutts got knee to the nutts
OUCH!
And they really wanted to call the foul on him.
Mutts the absolute worst at driving from the top of the arch
Mutts with the hero ball turnover again
Mutts has possession, calls TO. They call held ball...despite UM guy not touching the ball.
Miami gets a timeout after their player loses the ball???
That definitely took longer than the three seconds they had left to get across midcourt
I wish we could play an entire game the way we do the last 3-4 minutes when we're losing.
I wish coach Young and staff would use short bursts of the press earlier in the game as its really effective. Don't need it for long durations just enough to change the momentum
Like when we were up 9 in the first half?
Or when you are down 8-10 with ten minutes left. Just break the other teams rhythm.
In the past we've expected the MBB team to be really bad, and we've lived through it. Other seasons we've had hope based on the roster. And other seasons we simply didn't know. This season, however, might be the most frustrating. Really talented roster, some genuine depth (that CMY refuses to utilize for some reason) and another year when the ACC is down... This should have been a recipe for a whole lot of success this season. Very, very disappointing.
We win at least 4 more games if Mutts would dunk the freaking ball.....guy misses more layups than my grandmother....
Getting beat by hail Mary's is unexcusable
So many bad turnovers. It was 64-60 and we had possession and proceeded to turn it over the next two possessions. Pedulla needs to Pedontla. Also, just a bloodbath on the offensive boards. A very winnable game, as many have been this season, we just don't click.
We got a nothing game from our hero, basile, these last few games except for more than 2/3 the teams turnovers between him and mutts. Couldn't buy a 3.
Mutts, sixth year senior turns it over anytime he drives from the top of the arch.
Poor defense in the paint and failure to adjust to anything but man from Mike young.
I dunno maybe this is the best we can hope for this year ?
Sucks to struggle so bad to get rebounds we gave them far too many second chance buckets. Frustrating to be in it late but offense went cold in the end.
If we were ever in proper position to get a rebound...
Outrebounded 39-31.
Honestly, I'm shocked we had 31. I'm shocked we got above 15.
Oh well.
Can we please start winning football games again?
We were 1 - 1 on free throws in the 2nd half.
They were 12 - 16.
Pretty telling.
10 of those were in final two minutes. It wasn't that big a difference but yes there was an imbalance of free throws.
Woof.
That was a great game. I know people love to point out every little thing that the team did wrong, but we were in a position to to tie or take the lead several times in the 2nd half... case in point we had multiple good, open looks at 3 pointers in the mid-late 2nd half that did not go down.
We'd get a stop, run a good set springing an open shooter (Basile, Cattoor, or Pedulla) and the shots just were not going down. That happened 3 or 4 times. Just making 2 of those pulls us even for the final couple of minutes.
Only major issue is when they don't fall we forfeit possession as a rule with the style coach has them play. If you manage to get a handful more offensive rebounds you likely negate those point differentials you mentioned.
But also VT would choose the gap then commit two consecutive turnovers. Tech would close the gap then throw it out of bounds and compound the problem with a quick three on the next possession. Our boys cost themselves this win as much as anything else with mistakes at crucial times. can't get away with that against a top 15 team. Maybe CMY should have risked killing momentum and called a TO once we closed the gap the second time in the second half in order to change the mentality from pushing to catch up to locking down the defense and methodically advancing on offense.
I am angry, pissed, frustrated...all the negative things. But then, as I pay attention across the ACC, I see that the inconsistency and roller coaster storyline is affecting almost everyone. Surprising wins, baffling losses, closes calls that should have been routs. I guess that it is just that kind of year.
I'll need to see some major improvements in CMY in 2023-24 in things like talent, consistency, and preparation in order for me to remain on his side. Upsetting the ACC bigs a few times a year isn't going to do it for me long term when we have embarrassing losses to accompany them. A lot of winning the ACCCG last year is starting to fade away when it looks like the team is suffering from a multi-personality disorder.
Agreed. Next year needs to be a put up or shut up year. Another season like this and we need to rethink some things IMO
What coach would come here if we fire the coach who won the ACC the year before? The message is win the ACC or you're out...at the school that had never won it before.
End of next year it would be two years removed from the ACC tourney title. We currently have a 33-37 (.471) record against ACC foes. I like Young and I want him to work. But if '23/'24 is another sub .500 year....we're not exactly winning much in the ACC. 5 years should be enough time to be consistently above .500.
Can't be mid and hope for a miracle in the ACC tourney every year.
Feeling a little like Fuente post ACCCG vs. Clemson. If trajectory continues to drop next year I'd be concerned about MY long-term.
There are some of us that are already concerned. We cant afford (literally) to be mediocre, not with the investment in the Cassell renovations looming. The men have to step it up in order to fill those seats, especially the new suites and club level. If MY doesn't rebound with a 20+ win season and something (well) above .500 in conference play next season then he's going into the '24-'25 campaign on the hot seat.
Cassell Reno... Yikes, We were I think looking at $160 mil pre-pandemic, prior to explosive inflation in construction costs. Convo I've had with those who know think it could now be in the $250 mil range; as in 1/4 of a billion :-0
https://reach.hokiesports.com/cassell/
How are people supposed to try to run up the arches?
Most of my bids are coming in at 1.3-1.5x what would have been a reasonable estimate.
Bids have been insane in SW VA for a year plus. I had a supplier tell me that DIP is three times cost of PVC and delayed 10 months from order date.
Bids for War Memorial mechanical were absolutely insane... like 200% over. Gutted pretty much all the exterior access improvements so that now its mostly interior.
I want to go big. Make the ceiling of Cassell look like Freemont St in Vegas. Have you seen Texas's arena?
I don't even know if UVA has the money to strobe that elaborate of a banner 50% of the time during their home games.
may they short out their info boards trying
The older gray haired ref seems to hate tech. He called ticky tack fouls against us and ruled against us on EVERY out of bounds play while ignoring fouls in front of him committed by Miami. It was pretty clear early on the refs were not going to allow VT to knock off the #2 team in the ACC again.
I hate when opposing teams get to play thug ball against us.
BC just thrashed UVA 63-48 tonight so our boys aren't the only ones getting bullied. UVA shot 32% to BC 52%.
