This event will be important for qualifying for the East Regional where an athlete needs to be in the top 48 in the region as an individual or top 24 as a relay. The top 12 individuals and top 12 relays from each region move on to the NCAA final. A lot of Hokies are in good shape, but a couple are on the bubble so good times would be very helpful.

Multisport athletes don't compete at regionals, the top 24 nationally go straight to the NCAA final.

Pole vault ladies did their thing. Julia Fixsen takes the ACC title and sets a new facility record with a height of 14'-4.5". Kenna Stimmel was 4th, Journey Gurley tied for 5th, Hayley Horvath tied for 9th, Michal Tocker finished 12th and Erin Kelleher finished 15th. That gains the Hokie women 18.5 team points.

Both the men's and women's teams are looking pretty good heading into the final day of the meet on Saturday.

The women absolutely killed it in the field events, and are currently leading 2nd place NC State 69.5-44 practically before even hitting the track (only the 10,000m and Steeplechase finals have been run). The problem is, VT doesn't have too many more chances to pick up large chunks of points, and Duke is lurking right back there in 3rd place with 43 points. The Hokies women are probably going to need really strong performances from Barbora Malikova in the 400m and Lindsey Butler and Star Price in the 800m to hold off the really well-rounded Blue Devils.

The Hokies men are currently in 5th with 33.5 points, but have a lot of strong scoring opportunities on the track Saturday. I think they will ultimately pass all four teams ahead of them -- UNC (34.5 points), Duke (37), Notre Dame (39) and (boo!) UVA, who is currently in 1st with 55.5 points. But Florida State and particularly Clemson are loaded on the track. Even though FSU (8th place, 25 points) and Clemson (10th, 11 points) are way back at the moment, that's going to change dramatically on Saturday.

We'll see how it shakes out. Go Hokies!

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Solid 4th place and season's best for the men's 4x100. Tough 1500m for Grace Boone who finished 11th.

5th place finish for Viktor Idhammar in the men's 1500m

After the women's hurdles, Duke has pulled ahead of the Hokies and I don't think Tech has enough point opportunities left to keep up and pass them which is a bit of a downer. The women are still holding a 20 point lead on UVA however.

Woooo! 400m victory for JL IV! I really like watching him run, it just looks so effortless.

45.17 is also a PB. He does a very polished interview as well.

Well there is a big old learning experience. JL was disqualified from the 400m for taunting.

Wow, I've never even heard of such a thing. I didn't see it, but it better have been pretty egregious for them to DQ him. If I'm VT, I'm definitely filing a formal appeal about that either way.

That DQ cost the team 10 points, and VT lost the meet by 7.5 points, so if the DQ was in fact warranted this is going to be a long offseason for him.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

I just saw a replay of the end of the 400m. It was NOT particularly egregious, and the ACC should be absolutely embarrassed as a conference for affecting the outcome of the meet with a DQ here.

That being said, it looks like the Clemson runner Lincoln was jawing with was also DQ'd, so the point swing might not have made the difference in the team title.

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Judson was DQ'd for misconduct. The Clemson kid was DQ'd for running out of the lane. Wonder if the Clemson kid encroached and Judson said something about that.

Elijah Bell finished 7th and Aidan Clark in 4th in the high jump. VT men now 2 points behind UVA.

4th place finish for Cole Beck in the 100m. One of his blocks came out when he started which didn't look like it affected him a great deal, but it was definitely odd.

Lindsey Butler and Star Price take 2nd and 3rd in the 800m.

Nicholas Plant wins the 800m and Ben Nagel takes 3rd.

Cole Beck had a DNF in the 200 so that may do bad things for the 4x400. JLIV finished 7th.

The DQ of JLIV is definitely having a big impact on the men's team standings. Instead of being right there at the top the Hokies are currently 9.5 points back in 5th.

Yeah and that put us behind LOLUVa. 😑

On the women's side, only the 4x400 remains and Duke has a 50 point lead for the team title so they take it this year. Hokies sit in 2nd with a 10.5 point lead over FSU currently.

On to regionals! The East Region is going on in Jacksonville, FL today through Saturday and the Hokies have good representation. The top 12 in each event and relay advance to the championships in Austin.

With the third best time of 10.05, Cole Beck wins his heat to advance to Friday.

Nicholas Plant won his heat to advance to Friday and Ben Nagel finished 4th in his, but was fast enough to qualify on time.

No Hokies moving on in men's pole vault.

A surprise in the women's hammer throw. Barbora Stejfova throws a PB to finish 12th moving her on to Austin. Sara Killinen and Rebecca Mammel did not advance.

Essence Henderson finishes 9th in the shot put to advance.

Grace Boone finished 6th in her heat in the 1500m and will not advance.

Hokies finished 5 through 8 in the pole vault so all four ladies advance.

Barbora Malikova finished 4th in her heat but qualified for Saturday on time.

Lindsey Butler and Star Price move on to Saturday in the 800m.

Aidan Clark finished 15th in the high jump and will not advance.

Viktor Idhammar just missed out on advancing in the 1500m.

Rymer and Fleming will not advance in the steeplechase.

Cole Beck goes 9.87 to finish second overall and move on to Austin.

JL IV was 6th in his heat and is not currently in a qualifying position. There is a protest though so we will see what happens when that gets resolved.

Nicholas Plant wins the 800m to advance. Ben Nagel misses out on qualifying on time.

One DQ in the 400 but JL IV needed two guys to get kicked out so he will not advance.

Last Hokie of the evening, Antonio Lopez Segura, finishes 5th in his heat to advance.

Cole Beck with a school record 10.05 in the heats of the 100m, winning his heat and moving to the final.

WOW!

That's got Beck tied for 24th IN THE WORLD for 2023 right now.

Top Men's 100m in 2023

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Cole Beck looked fantastic getting 2nd in his heat to qualify for the NCAA national meet.

The times were ridiculously fast because of a strong tailwind, but Beck (9.87 seconds) looks in amazing shape right now. He was also 2nd overall, and if he runs like this he'll make the finals of the NCAAs.

That's some fast humans right there

The doll's trying to kill me and the toaster's been laughing at me.

Cole Beck is a Track and Field runner. He runs so goddamn fast

I must have read a thousand faces
I must have robbed them of their cause
Sickened thirst, Sickened thirst
Keeps it together
Soft white glow in the cranium
A bullseye made sedated
