AMA 14: H_ighlander_okie

If we're down to me, we're starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. Alas, here we be.

-long time (not saying lifetime because I have very faint memories of 1999 so...that sucks) Hokie football fan.
-got into Tech outta high school; never attended. Chased baseball dreams straight into Tommy John in February 2012.
-2014 Radford grad, geology
-Nats fan
-Panthers fan
-huge Nascar nerd
-love golfing. Golf does not necessarily love me back.
-my wife plans supremely awesome vacations that I'm never excited for but end up loving.
-I'm not old by any measure, but a couple of years ago I got to where I no longer wanted to sit in the rowdier sections of the east stands and now sit 4 rows above the cadets. Love it.
-work for my family's construction company. Graduated from Raddy on a Saturday, moved out of the apartment on Sunday, started work Monday. Love what I do most days.
-played a season of rugby in college. That rules.
-currently have a broken big right toe. Does not rule.

Ok, that's enough. Let it rip.

What kind of construction are you into?

If you could have lunch with 5 tkp people, but it has to be all at the same time, who would it be?

Underground utilities and grading. We have typically done municipal type projects but have started reaching for more private/muni site projects. With our equipment and people that's where we feel we really shine.

Geeze...uhhh...you, architecture is cool. Fernley, want him to give me some insider trader info...he has to have some, right? Probably round it out with Wasnick, Frank and Phil (sorry fellas...can't remember yall's s/n's at the moment lol) because they've invited me to dinner multiple time at Martinsville and I feel like this is repentance. APFOW is the bartender.

What was your set-up pitch sequence against someone looking fastball, and what was the knockout pitch.

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

I could touch 90 (not that fast) but I threw a pretty heavy ball. So essentially, I was throwing a sinker while not trying to...infuriating but effective. So I could start a guy out with that in or out and typically get away with it. But my curveball was my strikeout pitch by a mile and a half. It was something...tooting my own horn, but it was bad πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Follow up... did you have an eephus pitch in the bag, even if you never used it?

Hell no lol closest thing I had was a knuckleball that I never used, because like most people, it was filthy 1 out of every 5-10 times...the other times just looks like a rapper trying to throw out a first pitch

It is okay. I just needed an excuse to say "Eephus Pitch."

just googled Eephus Pitch. Was not disappointed.

What's your favorite supremely awesome vacation that your wife planned?

We went to Scotland last summer and hiked 56miles of the West Highland Way in three days. I contemplated divorce (not everyone is getting divorced) when she was presenting this trip but holy moly it was awesome. Just to be out where when you stop walking it is pure silence all around is just...nice. And I'm not a 7 day trip guy...but that was great.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Awesome! I wasn't familiar with that trail, but from a quick google search, it looks unreal. If I ever make my way to Scotland, I'll have to add this to the to do list. I don't see my traveling partner having 56 miles in her, so maybe just 1 or 2 legs

It's pretty undulating, so it's not anything too bad. Also really good paths they have, so you're not having to scramble at all. Only thing was at the end of 20miles the 2nd day, the last 3-5miles was all downhill...that was painful lol

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Putting in a plug for a trip to the Lake District in England. I know it's not Scotland but had no idea that England had such green hills and mountains. Absolutely amazing hikes.

following up -- what are some of the other awesome trips you went on H_? where did you honeymoon? how long have you been married?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Multiple trips to Colorado. We love going in the winter and staying in Estes Park....pro-tip: go in the winter. Summer is p-p-packeddd.
Montana is great. Washington and their National Parks are crazy...could not get over how big the trees are. I want to go back to Joshua Tree when we have more time...it's like an alien landscape compared to anything else I've ever seen. Ireland...need to re-do that one...had a good time, just want to do it differently.
Honeymoon'd in Costa Rica.
Got married in December 10, 2016. She was really wanting to do the 3rd. I kept insisting the 10th. She finally asked why...."*sigh* that's conference championship weekend." Are you serious? "Every dude there will be glued to their phones and what if Tech makes the ACCCG?" She laughed. I was right and she thanked me the closer we got to it lol

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

How soon are the Nats playoff caliber again? Any thoughts on the Nats upcoming 2nd pick in the draft?

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Hopefully within the next couple decades. Nah, they're showing signs of life...a scrappiness that has been gone for a couple years, and that's building blocks. As far as drafts go, baseball is so damn hard. Definitely need to start getting some arms back in the farm. Spending fortunes on Max worked brilliantly. Giving fortunes to Stras and Corbin for what they did in 2019...whew.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I hear that. Corbin's contract was signed prior to the 2018 season, was one of the best lefties for 2018 and 2019 and then dropped off a cliff like Rick Ankiel, Tim Lincecum, and Barry Zito.

You have to feel for Strasburg. His injuries are pretty severe that he can't even do normal activities anymore. He's not just on the baseball disabled list, but may truly be disable to the point that his right arm cannot lift anything.

There's a good chance the Nats draft Skenes out of LSU. He's a stud, throws 100+ with command. Many scouts project him to be the best pitching prospect out of college since Strasburg.

The Nats also have a good set of studs in the minors too, especially in the outfield. I think it'll be 2026 that they compete for playoffs again, but we'll see. Too many things to possibly go wrong from now until then.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Yeah I watched him the other night. Dude puuuumps gas lol

Soundtrack to your life?
How long did you chase the baseball dream?
Who was your favorite baseball player growing up?

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

The Whippoorwill by Blackberry Smoke. Love that album and feel like I can point to a moment in my life for about every song.

From about 5 to 20ish. Had a rocket arm once I started growing and it got exploited from there on and all those innings and thousands of pitches wore me down. Had a very minor tear in my UCL sophomore year of high school, rehabbed back and got kinda back on track then fourth game of my sophomore year of college it just exploded. So got Tommy John and got back to respectable stuff but rehabbing out of a program has its disadvantages. Shit happens, life goes on.

Probably my avatar, Jayson Werth. Loved his patience at the plate and overall demeanor...tried to emulate that as much as I could, just not nearly as good and not as cool lol

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Probably my avatar, Jayson Werth.

For whatever reason I always thought that it was a picture of you.

Plot twist: I am Werth.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

the best part of Jayson Werth is going from pretty boy to mountain man in about 15 seasons.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

I wouldn't consider the first iteration of Werth as a "pretty boy" - just clean shaven.

To me, a pretty boy is a guy who is not only clean shaven but also conventionally "hollywood" attractive. Like a Ryan Gosling, young Brad Pitt, etc. I just don't think Werth meets that criteria. But perhaps, as a cis gender heterosexual male, I'm not really qualified to make that call?

Onward and upward

see the pic I posted below. That's the pretty boy look I'm talking about. You're right in that he was mostly just young and cleaner as a rookie.

  1. Favorite track?
  2. MFK: Logano, Kyle Busch, Kyle Larson

Vroom Vroom

I terribly biased towards Martinsville. I'd say I'm well past the century mark in races seen there in person, probably ~40-50 Cup races at that. Just love the history and grittiness of the track. And they're great customers of ours, so that's nice as well lol but nothing gets me excited like Talladega. I want my ashes spread there on a fly-by lol

M: Logano. I've come to respect the guy and admire his driving style (aggressive but not out of control) and ability to tell a reporter what's going on without being...idk, whiny? Idk...I've just sorta come to like the guy in the past couple seasons.
F: Busch. Probably the greatest raw talent I've seen. Not as much of a prick as he used to be and I like he's kinda turning around RCR. The Samantha tik-tok shit is annoying as hell.
K: Larson. Extremely, absurdly talented. I think he's without question a top 5 driving talent on the planet right now. I just...idk...I don't like the guy.

I really had to think about that lol

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

1. Dumbest Blake you know?
2. Nicest course you've played in VA? (And why is it Beaver Hills?)

Fire Whit.

1) I know a Blake that said Darlington is the only track he'd ever consider leaving Martinsville for. Darlington is an amazing track...but there is no amount of money that could make me want to move to Darlington, SC. That's pretty dumb.

2) Beaver Hills is an abomination. If that was the only course I could play at the rest of my life I'd probably take up bowling. Primland is the answer. I've never gotten play anywhere up near Richmond or what have ya, so I'm a little limited.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Primland is top notch!!!

early 2000s Cup engines full bore

This reminded me of one of my favorite smells, which you probably share. I used to attend spring races at Bristol from 1995-2011 with occasional fall cup races and Busch races mixed in whenever somebody had tickets.

The smell of the gas fumes and the hot rubber was my favorite smell. But then sometime in the early 2000s they changed the formula of the gasoline and the fumes didn't smell right anymore. They had a really strong chemical odor that would give you a headache. It was when ethanol gas was first coming on the market. I wonder what happened?

I can't tell ya...because me and my buddies all looks at each other around the third pace lap and do the *wave to your nose* gesture over the fumes and o-face lol

Sadly, never floated or fished it. I will say my least favorite way to enjoy the New is hitting balls into it while playing the River Course.
Manhole frame and cover (standard 8in runs about 250lbs) fell from about 3ft straight down. I had on muck boots that don't have steel toes. I hollered bad words.
Pains me to say, but probably 2010 Boise. Broke my heart but that was, objectively, an awesome game. GT 2010 was incredible too.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Gotta agree that Boise game was fun- for 58 minutes or so! Of course due to the incredibly great ability to get folks into the stadium (heavy s/) , I and many people missed the first two scores after spending 45-60+ minutes to get into the stands.

Cake or Pie? What is your favorite?

Which is your favorite BBQ place?

We worked on campus during the chiller plant project, that went pretty ok, tough but no real mishaps other than one geotech...but we won't be getting into that. In fact, I'll say me not kicking that dude's ass is the nicest thing I've ever done, for the question up the thread. Boom. Then we had the site package thru Branch on The Vue up near the airport, which was a nightmare. Town of Blacksburg is not the easiest to work with.

Dutch caramel apple pie from a bakery in Louisville. Can't remember the name of the place but holy hell it's delicious.

Due South is good. Checkered Pig in Martinsville is awesome when they're hitting on all cylinders. But...to toot my own horn, I love my bbq lol

Hate to say it but March closed and shut down the Due South in CBurg just like she did Fatback Soul Shack. The employees showed up to work to find the owner had shut the restaurant. They found out on facebook.

Well...shit.

I'd say we have definitely crossed paths between the Vue and Martinsville. Hopefully site plans for the Vue were decent. B'burg may be top 5 hardest localities in VA.

Sorry to everyone for pulling this out of a bog.

No the plans were solid, seriously can't remember anything that was out of whack on a site that intricate and tight. GC...won't be working for any going forward if I have a seat at the table. Put idiot, email warriors in charge of an army fighting a timeline from hell.

As a baseballer, what pitcher who you never saw pitch sparks your imagination and makes you wish you could have seen them. I find myself wishing I could go back and see who was faster, Walter Johnson or Smoky Joe Wood. Who had the best screwball, Christy Mathewson or Carl Hubbell? What made Grover Cleveland Alexander, who looked like he was 60 when he was 38, so effective despite being a drunk and having horrible bouts with eplilepsy?

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I'm always curious what they looked like live. But my answer is definitely Bob Gibson. That dude was so damn good they changed the mound height for him. Would've loved to have stepped in the box vs Nolan Ryan in his prime just to see what 107 looked like. The guns today measure the ball out of the hand...the guns back then measured it crossing the plate. So he could very well have hit Chapman type numbers or exceeded them. Also, this is a run-on paragraph from hell, but the innings those guys pitched are mind boggling.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Didn't see Nolan Ryan in his prime but in his twilight,
I saw him pitch a 13-2 or so complete game against Atlanta at Fulton County Stadium(yes I'm that old!).
He used his aging arm to perfection and also hit a home run that game!

Great article about him https://bleacherreport.com/articles/148787-nolan-ryan-turned-in-the-grea...

Two excerpts from that

1) On his 7th no-hitter---"It was how he did it against the Jays that was the most stunning. Out of the mind-blowing 122 pitches he threw to Toronto batters, 83 were strikes and the last pitch of the game was a 93-mph fastball."

2) in one of his last games - "Which brings us to the third Ryan performance that rivals the other two: the royal thumping he laid on a foolish 26-year-old Robin Ventura, who felt it necessary to charge the mound on a 46-year-old Ryan two years after his final no-hitter. The noogie patrol was in full effect upon Ventura's arrival at the mound when Ryan grabbed that chump like a rag doll, and promptly used his pitching hand to lay about seven blows on the top of Ventura's helmet-less dome. It has to be by all standards the greatest baseball beat down in the history of the sport, and it was handed out by a guy 20 years older than the guy Ryan used as a punching bag.
What a way to finish the career of the most intimidating man ever to stand on a pitcher's mound."

It was maybe the single dumbest move in sports history. You had a cathedral of 162,000 seats that had such a long waiting list to get tickets to, the running joke was you had to wait for a family member to die and will you the tickets. The ultimate "if it aint broke...". The dirt is so damn dumb. If you're so deadset on running dirt go to a fucking dirt track. Hell, run The Dirt Track at Charlotte...you own the damn track.

All that to say...I think the racing on the concrete today is incredible in person lol

We has season tix for a bit, but the last few before we gave the up were the penultimate races before the playoffs. Everyone got in line and just drove in circles. Nothing happened. Only thing you could do was drink to stay awake...and oh boy, we were great at that back then.

I get it. I was lucky enough to go to 3-4 races of the old configuration in person...and while those are still the ultimate highlights of the track, the battles that happen today throughout the entire race (without having to knock someone out of the way) have me and the dudes going nuts in the stands. Favorite story?

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

Ok, was able to get to most throughout the day...saved this for last because it will take the longest to type.

This is a story of America defeating Canada.

The story starts with me and my wife taking a vacation to an all-inclusive in Mexico in 2018. All-inclusives, as most know, are either couples wanting bottomless drinks or families wanting bottomless buffets. We were/are amongst the former.

So, following 5 days of the bottomless stuff, we had become familiar with some of the staff. One of the older gentleman of the staff stopped us like 5.5 day in and said that the resort had tasked him with trying something out for guests: taking them out into the town for the night, showing them around, and letting them explore the city...he asked if we were interested. Sure!

So, after the shopping district, we were able to go about on our own. We didn't really know what to do (we had no desire to buy and attempt to send street art back home) and I think the staff member recognized that, so he asked us if we would like to go to a local brewery. Sure!

So we go in, get a table, grab a couple beers, and engage with lovely conversation with the man. Sincerely, a super nice guy. I know it's his job, but a very engaging dude with a cool story that I will never forget...and never retell...because I can't remember it. Anyways. He gets a phone call about 20mins in, hangs up, looks at us, "do you mind if another couple joins us?" No, man. More the merrier. "Ok! Be right back!"

*enter Canadians*

Husband and wife, our age-ish. Wife was a nurse, husband...can't remember his occupation but I remember he was type 1 diabetic and a power lifter...dude had some guns. Everything started off very nicely. All cordial conversations. Then, me being interested in tattoos (I have none, but I admire them) asked her what her sleeve was all about...not in a condescending manner, just...purely interested...it was good work! Well, she worked her way up to what was the most beautiful bald eagle you have ever seen. An absolute work of art. I joked, "are you sureeee you're not American?"

*side bar: if you've never met me, I come across as an intellectual hillbilly. Sound like a backwoods hick but know my way around a thesaurus.*

Soooo, she takes this kinda as more of a jab than I had ever intended. I immediately become her punching bag for the next hour and a half. Meanwhile her husband is rolling with the punches and my wife can feel how uncomfortable it is becoming between the two of us because no matter what I say all this mountie can say is "'murica!" Not cool.

So....fast forward to around midnight. The staff member, who is shitfaced at this point, suggests one of his local favorite bars then we go back to the resort. Sure, dude. Surprisingly super classy joint. Gets us a table. We sit down, he says "margaritas for the table, on me." Classy joint, classy move. Margs come out, they're lovely. He then asks "does anyone here *hiccup* know ANY spanish?" I say "yeah, just enough to get me in trouble." "Go on" he says.

"De donde estΓ‘ la biblioteca"

Canadian: *scoffs* "actually, it's bibliotec."

My mind, my the next two seconds was in two different realms. One half was "...this (use your imagination)" the other was "omg did I just give her a W for the night."

Staff member: "nooo, he's right."

Me, shouting, off the cuff: "SUCK MY DICK!" out of fury.

Her husband, thankfully, laughed his ass off. It was an awkward ride back. But I won one for the good guys.

Talk with many Canadians who live out west and their attitude towards Toronto and many (not all, of course, but many) people from there is in-line with you Red Sox fans think about Yankee ones.

Then there was a friend I had in grad school that was from Montreal. She said the Canadian press thinks that it didn't happen if it didn't happen in Toronto.

And I have had 2 people from Toronto say, point blank, that Canada basically is Toronto or elections should only reflect the voting in Toronto. As if the rest of the country is of no consequence. Not all are like this. Probably not even close to half. But enough that I get why those from Edmonton and Montreal can't stand Toronto people.

3) 2007 FSU. Just felt like Beamer would never get over the hump and then just blasted them in bolivian. Also, that was a frigid game.
4) 2021 UNC. First game back (that never seemed like it would happen). Took my dad up with me after work, so that was a nice experience. Lane was rockin that night. To get out of the game and to see how viral (no pun) that entrance went was incredible.

Hm. Not something I can say I've ever thought about. Does "Long Way to the Top" count? Or whatever I walked to at graduation at Radford? Heard that played in the main yard at University of Edinburgh while in Scotland. Fuuuucking chills. So touristy, but got the juices flowing!

Talk to me about this:

I'm not old by any measure, but a couple of years ago I got to where I no longer wanted to sit in the rowdier sections of the east stands and now sit 4 rows above the cadets. Love it.

What makes that part of the stadium less rowdy? What do you like about it? Do you miss anything about east stands?

I haven't been to a game at Lane since 2017. At that time, I was still capable of going on 36 hour benders (start drinking friday night/afternoon, stop drinking when bars close early Sunday morning). Now, I'm 6 years older, have child(ren), and 3 drinks is enough to get me drunk and give me a mild but uncomfortable hangover. BUT the idea of having seats where people sit down, don't yell, don't chant, etc, makes me sick and ashamed.

We still stand and hoot and holler and all that...it was more of simply wanting to get away from the student section. Which, now that they have them caged in, probably isn't as much of an issue now. Essentially, I like sitting somewhere where I know standing and yelling is the norm, but also I know there won't be 20 extra 19-22yr olds packed into the row when the row is already sold out.

How have they caged in the student section? Just curious since I haven't been to a game in ages.

In the east, they have railed off all the students in like sections 1...then the tetris piece above and further towards midfield. I reckon enough people complained πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Yeah, the students were wondering down from the nose bleed sections and taking season ticket holders seats. Then wouldn't move half the time, and a lot of security refused to get involved. It lead to some incidents a couple years ago and a lot of bad feelings/press.

I dislike what they've done with the student section. I sit in section 3 specifically because my wife and I like the energy and want to feel like we're still part of the action. They should just sell section 3 tickets with a disclaimer.

The one thing that grinds my gear is throwing shit. There should be high def cameras pointed at the stands and any person identified as throwing an object should be kicked out of the stadium permanently.

Lady next to us got hit with a glass bottle while visiting her son and had a crazy head bleed. I got hit in the side of the face by some disposable vape thing and would have swung on sight if I knew who the pussy was that threw it.

I like that I have an actual seat and I'm glad my kids have a designated space for them not shoved up against someone. We also do the club seats there so it's a nice easy bathroom visit for them. But no one said anything about cheering or standing during plays. I also am getting to the age where I don't stand the entire game. Timeouts, dead time, tv dead space I like to sit down now.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Same...gameplay, I'm up. Not gameplay, I'm considering using my seat lol

Edit: also, should say that if someone asked me "where's the best place to experience Lane," I would tell them the east. Like for the full, crazy experience. But don't judge the experience on the unnavigableness that lives under those stands lol and the SEZ is the closest to where we tailgate. Wins all around in my book. Ok, enough about seats lol

There's such thing as too much seat talk and a fella oughta be fucking aware of it.

I didn't know you existed until this thread so... hi. Do you regret not going to VT out of high school?

Yes and no. Truth be told, the only real reason I wanted to go to Tech was because I love football lol

Late to the party due to work.

If you drink firewater, what are your top three?

What are you reading?

Does Radford have one of the best baseball stadiums in college athletics, and why is the answer yes?

I feel like it's been beat into the ground, but it's gotta be Liberty, right? There was a time I would've sold my soul for a scholarship there (that's a story for a tailgate when I'm, well, obliterated), but as time has passed, I notice trends that lead to not very good ends. The Nats were up 5-0 against the Cardinals early in this game and are currently down 8-5 FUCK FUCK FUCK. Gah...I love a good loser. Wtf is wrong with me. Anyways...I know some here have diplomas from there, I do not blame you whatsoever. But just...weird vibes.

Ooo...hard to say. I thoroughly enjoy bourbon and a scotch...more of a bourbon man, though. But to say a top three, man idk if I can, also scared I may come across as "basic". I love Angels Envy, hate their rye though. Heavens Door is solid. Haven't had a Rabbits Hole that I don't like, Derringer is awesome. But I'm relatively new to the bourbon game.

Admittedly, not a huge reader. Feel dumb whenever someone talks about what all they read and I'm like "yeah, Jordan Bianchi had a great article on the race at St. Louis!" πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Unless it's changed since I was there, do they?lol
