Are they keeping the Lager, or does this replace it?
Not sure. If the lager is still selling, I would figure they would keep making both. Not sure how well the lager is doing though.
The Hefeweisse is seasonal. Helles year round
Appreciate them trying to push traditional German beer styles (Helles, Weizen). But most people that drink craft beer these days want a hop bomb. So I hope it picks up some sales. Beer shelves are too full of IPA these days IMO. It's a bit much.
The target for these are not the traditional craft beer drinker.
The target is for those that will see the Hokie and be tempted to try it.
And both of these styles are better tailgate beers than IPAs imo. A good hefeweizen is excellent when it's warm out.
100% agree. I hope it catches on, would love to see more Hokie fans get into drinking good traditional German brews. Just feel the market has become so oversaturated with IPAs, glad to see someone doing something different.

I have 22 beers on tap and never do I have more than 5 and usually 3 or less IPAs on draft. But I still get complaints there's too many IPAs. Kinda funny.
I try to keep a DIPA and West coast on tap. Usually there's also a fruited IPA on tap also,like a Blood Orange IPA or a coffee IPA.
Other than that I do variations on a white IPA and a triple IPA. That's it.
From a Scottish 60 shilling to British porter to a Belgian Special dark at 18 ABV, we run that gamut. You never know what will be popular.
The tough part is every beer is someone's favorite. No matter what you brew, someone has a complaint or is begging for a different style. It turns into a logistical nightmare.
I really enjoy the helles (not herpes, stupid autocorrect). I buy it every time I see it.
There was likely nothing more majestic in my beer drinking life than having an Edelstoff Helles in a Masskrug at Augustiner Brau in Munich at like butt thirty in the morning. The most amazing fresh lager ever.
You'd think by now people would be over the hop bombs and moved onto something else. I got bored with IPAs awhile back so unless there's something unique about it, it doesn't intrigue me.
Many years ago, before I even had my first IPA, I was at/in a wedding of 2 employees of the Yazoo Brewery in Nashville. I had their Hefeweizen for the first time and it was like clouds opening up and angels singing. Amazing style of beer. Didn't hurt that the kegs they had for their wedding were fresh off the line. I still haven't found a Hefe as good as Yazoo's.
Franziskaner makes a good heff. Also König Ludwig Weissbier.
My two favorite beers in the world are both German Hefeweizens - Weihenstephaner and Hacker-Pschorr. Liquid sex IMO.
Have you had Weihenatephaner Vitus? It's their pale weizenbock. Take a hefeweizen and crank it up to 11. It's fantastic.
I have, and I like it. But the original hefe is still my favorite.
