HOKIES!!!

Man, Pry is quickly answering each and every question we had about his recruiting prowess. Our WR core looks ridiculous coming out of this cycle.

Mines has earned his pay raises. I haven't looked at who the primary recruiter was, but dang if that room hasn't changed and is looking brighter with these recruits.

Three of the top-10 composite recruits for 2024 in VA are now committed to the hokies

He is the 3rd Top 10 VA recruit of this cycle according to On3 (Adams #4, Johnson #6, Wiggins #10), according to 247 (Wiggins up to 9th), 2nd according to ESPN (Adams #4, Wiggins #6), 2nd according to Rivals (Adams #3, Wiggins #5)

ESPN and Rivals have Johnson listed as a DC commit

which is stupid for his first true full cycle.

White and who else?

curious how 2024 class is Pry's first true full cycle

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

So given Fuente was fired in November 2021, Pry had about 2 weeks to lock down a class for Early Signing Day and had his back against the wall for the remainder of that 2022 class. I have never truly counted that class as a full class for us because Pry was only really able to throw it together at the last minute. This year was always going to be a better statement about how well we can put it together because it is a full year of recruiting the graduating senior class and having our coaches working in the high school ranks.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

the 2023 class is already signed

we are currently getting commitments for the '24 class that will sign this up coming december/february

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

LOL Alum07 like:

I mean..... you're not entirely wrong. Last couple years have been a blur after we moved into a new house and our 2nd kid was born

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

In fairness to you though, I still kind of consider this to be Pry's first recruiting class litmus test. Despite having a full year for the '23 class, recruiting is a long game (some kids start getting recruited in 8th grade).

I think it's hard for all these coaches to start selling VT in the final year of recruitment for kids when they just got here themselves (except for Price since he's been here...). For the '24 class, they've at least been selling VT to some of these kids for two full recruiting cycles, which I think should be enough to get through to them if they're skilled recruiters.

Geeze, I was born much too early. I could have been prime recruiting material if I was being recruited in 6th-8th grade as I was destroying everything in my path in the rec league circuit. Plus, all the camps they have now would have been an added bonus. I only remember the Chris Hamberger Football Camp that I was supposed to attend (until I got grounded), but there were only very limited college contacts even at that camp, from what I heard.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

But getting hired part way through the '21 school year (signing the '22 class)impacts ability to have been targeting and recruiting a class for '23 (including figuring out what talent, if any, he had on his current roster to know what positions he needed to recruit). This WOULD be the first time he had a full year of recruiting the players he knew he'd need on his roster.

Or am I thinking about that wrong?

If you're arguing that it takes two full years to sign a class, i guess so. I don't really buy that 🤷‍♂️

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

No, I'm saying he lost time because our roster was so effed up. Ordinarily a new coach can come in and know at least kind of what he has and what he needs to recruit. We had 10 RBs, and don't forget after the 21 season, we lost both QBs, our top 2 WRs, 3 of our 5 starting OLine, I think a starting TE. We lost almost our entire starting O. We had Smith, one RB, and 2 OLine who were proven contributors. Most teams don't lose that many starters after a season.

And even if they do, I'd assume there was some recruiting inroads with some new guys that some of your staff (recruiting, not coaching) that could keep you kind of on track with. ESPECIALLY in-state kids. But we know that's not how Fuente operated. So, ORDINARILY, it shouldn't take a coach 2 years, but un-fucking our roster and having to freaking build relationships with IN-STATE coaches to hopefully gain ground over other schools who have been recruiting them the whole time. I'm curious to know when there is a coaching change how many of their first class (considering that the '23 class in this instance) are in-state kids?

From my post where I looked at the in-state guys we'd gotten since 2017 who were top 300 nationally, I think we got 1 from 2018 to 2022. I mean, if Pry wanted to recruit guys from NC or TX, maybe he would have had more success his first year. /s

I will buy that, Mack Brown took two full classes to start bring in more talent. There is so much more data to review for recruits than there was in the past, and with early signing day and everything just moving sooner that things have to start earlier. Especially if you are a new staff you really have to recruit 3 classes to keep the current class together, next year's class as those players only have one more season and most will be committed prior to that season. Then the 3rd class which are upcoming juniors (by football season, still sophomores i the spring semester). Those players will be going to camps and such that summer.

Did you learn nothing from the Fu era?? "Year One" is a relative term that you can use whenever it fits your argument!! /s

I'll forever be 24 years old. It's science.

This is....

I can't help but laugh at this. Fontel Mines was a very solid player at uva, yet they passed on bringing him on staff as I'm sure he would have. Instead, he is changing the football landscape as a Hokie.

Fire Whit.

WOOOOOOOO!!!!

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

That WR room is going to be VERY young and VERY talented next year! We currently have 3 of the top 10 players in the state...man that is awesome as hell!

Not to rain, but young can be a liability. That said this is great work. I just feel like we're going dynasty mode with Texas state or Tulane.

I'm still figuring this out.

We also picked up some experienced receivers in the portal, so the good young guys should have a year or two to develop.

Aren't all those portal guys seniors? How many will be here after this season?

I'd expect them all to be done after this year, that would give Chance Fitzgerald, Ayden Greene, Marcell Baylor, and Takye Heath a year to develop. WRs in between them eligiblity-wise are Gosnell, Holloway, Lofton (maybe others I'm forgetting).

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

That was what I was thinking. We'd have some experienced guys so we wouldn't be relying on/expecting a bunch of freshmen to perform on day 1.

Idk how many "experienced guys" we'd have as much as having "some guys with some experience". Loaded with sophomores, redshirt freshmen, and true freshmen is still a pretty young room. If we don't bring another WR into the '24 class, i wouldn't be too surprised to see us in the portal market for another experienced WR again next off-season -- to add at the top of the depth chart and take some pressure off the younger players. Doesn't need to be three WRs like it has been this year, but a one-and-done grad transfer could make sense depending on how thigs pan out.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

WR is a position that athleticism almost always outweighs experience. If a freshman can get off the line, run a crisp route and has soft hands, then you put him on the field. There's no experience that teaches a WR to out run, out juke, or out jump a DB.

If they're a terrible blocker, then they need to learn to put in the effort. But that's mostly desire and I think history shows that more experience won't help a WR become a better blocker unless they choose to be a better blocker.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Don't you think time in the weight room helps with blocking, shedding blocks, etc?

Yes, but on the outside its less important and if you have the desire to block, you can block a DB that is generally smaller or similar in stature to that of a freshman WR.

CFB always said, you can get on the field quicker if you play on the outside and that's because WR and DB are talent-dominant positions.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Physically developed and refined technique. There's a ton of footwork that goes into beating a db off the line. Learning the playbook and route tree, etc. A year in the program is great for kids who are still developing physically (adding muscle, some still growing), but it's not strange to see a player to take a leap in his third year in the program

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Sure, but talent will outplay better footwork of a less talented player. Learning the playbook/route tree/blocking assignment is easiest for WR than any other position and if the freshman doesn't learn that in a month, then yes, he doesn't deserve to start.

I don't disagree that many players (WRs included) do make leaps in 3rd years. But look at the history of all of the VT great wide receivers. So many were early producers, if not freshman starters: Royal, Coale, Boykin,
and Morgan. Freeman and A. Davis were stars in their sophomore year (but played in era when no freshmen were able to get snaps). To your point, Wilford and Clowney are good examples of taking a leap in that 3rd year. M. Davis didn't produce until his SR year (but the desire to block was never there). My point is, the great receivers often produce early because it is a position that allows for talented athletes to excel without experience.

The most talented receivers should be on field, regardless of their experience. That's assuming that they have the desire to block and can learn the playbook in the month (very low bars for WR).

🦃 🦃 🦃

Marcus Davis could have been a first round pick if he had put in the effort. He saw the field because his lack of blocking didn't matter when the rest of your WR Corp were a couple of walk ons and a track guy that should have been a DB based on genetics. He should have absolutely dominated based on his talent.

I bet at least one of those true freshmen receivers play this year too. Maybe two of them.

I think they all get some burn with the 4 game redshirt rule, I'll be happy if one plays well enough to force pry into burning the redshirt, meritocracy and all that

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Maybe some burn, but probably not a ton. We haven't been good enough to blow teams out and play WRs 6-8.

Part of Pry's strategy is to recruit transfers with multiple years of eligibility left with a few exceptions (Jennings) if it makes sense for the roster.

I think Jennings is the only senior, but I may be wrong.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

I mean this could be closely looked as almost how we were in that 04 season heading into the USC matchup. They were young receivers, had growing pains, but were able to develop as the season and years went on.

That OPI call on Josh Morgan still pisses me off.

A phantom defensive hands to the face on 3rd and a million - something they rarely call- costs us a big east championship against Syracuse. We make that stop, we take a knee. Win the big east. Nope.

1. Feeling like you can make an authoritative comment on someone's overall commitment to a program by looking at their facial expression over Instagram is a different level of ridiculous

2. If NIL $$ was really part of the issue (which is purely internet rumor and nothing more at this point); then SC has no one to blame but themselves. You are in the SEC, the originator of the duffel bag full of cash and the richest conference that exists. There is no excuse for an SEC or B1G team at this point to lose recruits to another conference based on $$.

my favorite is the guy who said "SC doesnt give money, it gives opportunity" as if we have a WR room stocked with players who are gonna keep him from ever seeing the field

I was honestly too distracted trying to figure out why the video quality looked like the Zapruder film when we're halfway to 2024

if the shoe was on the other foot, we'd feel pretty similar I'm sure.

S. Car. was (and still is to a degree) a major rebuild. Just like VT Adams, Beamer got recruits that had no business going there based on current win/loss percentage, recent history, etc.

But yea, definitely a lack of vision of the full picture and what is happening in the state in VA (and beyond) recruiting wise. It's no longer PSU/SCar dominance. Of course, PSU dominated VA because of Pry, so it makes sense that he could turn these table a bit.

Still a long road back to ACC-title contention, but the groundwork is being laid.

Beamer got recruits that had no business going there based on current win/loss percentage, recent history, etc.

That's called selling a vision.

Love it! Not feeling so "cocky" over there now, eh?

Reading some of these comments lines up with my opinion of South Carolina fans. Living in that state and being surrounded by them, they feel a sense of entitlement even though their program has accomplished very little as a whole. Sorry...I actually can't stand Gamecock fans more than Clemson fans

Found this interview with some interesting info about SCar's recruitment of him. He says they definitely made him think about his decision after his visit, but Tech was his frontrunner early. Also says they were talking with his stepdad for a while thinking it was him...

I'm here for the memes, I just stay for the football.

Love that end part of him saying let's all get back to the old way and flip this program back around. If Pry can get the coaching and game day fiascos in line we should be a solid 8-9 win team every year again.

No offense, but 8-9 wins doesn't get VT in the playoff hunt, or back to Orange/Sugar bowls. That's still a step below where VT was and where we want it to get back to

Maybe not the playoff hunt, but if 8-9 wins is our floor, I'll take it.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I would be thrilled with contending for the ACC CG- now with no divisions, we need to be top 2 in the conference. If we can do that every few years, we would be back to winning consistently

Wherever you need me, the ball is going, I'll be there. After that we going to party in the endzone. Just like that.

Play the young man. Early. Most importantly, throw the ball to him often. Let's go

You just know that was a big part of Pry's pitch to the young man

Absolutely. I always thought that we should have thrown the ball ALOT more to "dudes" we had like Ford and Phillips... those were legit ACC WRs that could have played for anyone. Needed the ball more. Same with Hazelton- that kid was good. Tre Turner- we tried to feature him, could never stay healthy. Throw the ball to your weapons- often, preferably past the LOS

No more screens that fans can call from the stands please! I guess when I was in school you could predict a Stinespring call too, but the execution was there to where sometimes it didn't matter.

I was at the thursday night game against Maryland where we ran the same stretch play to Darren Evans, and they simply couldn't stop it. No fancy tricks, they knew the play and we ran it down their throat. Of course I was on the other end of that- also in Lane- the night that paul johnson beat us by 100 and didn't attempt a pass.

They were so efficient effective! /s

WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

BIG GET!

Him and Wiggins have a good shot at blowing past what Ford and Phillips did in their years at Tech. Let's just hope the OL develops as fast as this WR room.

Would love to see Adams, Wiggins, and White become the feared trio I think they can be.

In some ways, we're modeling the Clemson route to upper echelon. Dabo was hired in 2008. Signed Tahj Boyd in 2009, but it was 2010 that he signed DeAndre Hopkins, Martavis Bryant, and few 4-star defenders.

I don't know if a Boyd equivalent is on the roster or being recruited, but could be (maybe Drones/Watson/Davi) -- but VT is definitely are getting their share of 4-star WRs and a few 4-star defenders. Get the outside athletes and athletic defenders, showcase that talent, and get recruits excited for VT-brand of football.

🦃 🦃 🦃

2026 Season Challenge: TBD
Previous Challenges: Star Wars (2019), Marvel (2020), Batman (2021), Wrasslin' (2022)

Gotta start somewhere. And honestly, at that time Clemson was best known Klempsoning. It took an innovative OC and some wins on the recruiting trail to get Clemson to change their reputation. I'm not suggesting that VT is the next Clemson, but just noting the similarities to the Clemson inflection point.

🦃 🦃 🦃

we still need that blockbuster class that dabo got to get started- two 5 star guys in Watkins and Hopkins. Beat us head to head for stephon anthony too

Well, that's the kicker. Hopkins and Bryant were 2010 (but Bryant went JuCo), rivals ranked 19th class (VT was 23 that year). Then 2011 was Watkins (5-star) Bryant again (4-star), Bellamy (4-star), Stephone Anthony (5-star that VT was a finalist for), and a bevy of other 4-stars for the 8th best class that year. Then Clemson took off.

So yea, VT would need a major jump in recruiting next year to get to mimic Clemson's rise. One can dream.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Funny enough about Anthony, we lost out and signed Maddy or Dadi (don't remember which one), but both had a much better career than Anthony as he didn't really play until he was a senior.

Oh man, Maddy. A two star guy that was a 4 year starter. Might have been the most over-performing recruit we ever had. Dude was a BEAST!! Either him or Kam.

On the way to the kickoff game against Bama we were on the bus with a bunch of Bama fans and they jokingly asked me and my friend about our chances. I didn't think we'd win but stated that our only chance is if their oline doesnt gel quickly in this game (I believe they had 4 new starters) because this is the best dline they will face all year. They kind of heckled me about that because SEC. Some how I ended up on the bus with them after the game too and their ton was different after seeing out dline they believed my statement. All of them were impressed with maddy.

Perhaps but it signaled that Dabo could come get the guys he wanted from Va. and it took off from there.

I'm sure it's every team but man there are a few nasty usce tweets in his replies.

I absolutely love SEC fans getting called out for the trash they are most of the time. Just amazing.

I've been a bit surprised by the vitriol of the USCe fans.

Beyond being dumb and juvenile, bashing recruits and their families on social media is particularly counterproductive in the Transfer Portal era. You never know what can happen and you're just burning bridges without accomplishing anything.

At VT just in the past few years we have seen guys like J. Williams, A. Powell, and while he didn't commit here, we at least had real interest from Grimes this offseason. All of those guys were coveted by VT yet chose other programs. They probably don't even consider coming to VT if fans trash them on social because of a supposed "silent commitment."

Here's a clue....a silent commitment means literally nothing. The term itself is an oxymoron and another of the increasingly ridiculous concepts we have created...along the same lines as the "non-comittable offer"

I've been way past over "silent commits" since the Fuente era where that's all they talked about. Shockingly most of those "silent commits" ended up going elsewhere. I take silent commits with a massive grain of salt, heck I don't even take verbal commits as set as stone.

They beat Tennessee once and a part of their fanbase thinks they're all of a sudden a blue blood. Wildly irrational expectations, probably from being second fiddle to Clemson for a decade now.

Also, has any ever been to Columbia, ie the arm pit of America?

Columbia can't possibly be as bad as East St. Louis, IL.

Can confirm.

Any idea if the sign on Illinois Route 3 right near the National City/East St. Louis border that read 'Watch out for falling buildings' or 'Beware of falling buildings' is still there? Pretty sure it was actually in National City, but close enough.

When I was going back to MO on spring break with a friend of mine, I had to drive that route to show him the sign. Not sure he 100% believed me until I took him by it.

More importantly, is the floating McDonalds still there?

I spent one night in Colombia, SC in my whole life and my car got broken into.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

was it a Kia?

Onward and upward

It was a Toyota. Why, did you rob a Kia in Colombia in 2000?

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

No, there have been a bunch of kias stolen recently. Apparently some models are super easy to steal and someone did a tiktok on how to do it and then a bunch of kids went out and stole scores of kias

For as much as socar is chirping online, you'd think they have ever actually done anything historically

I been here since day 0.

VT is the 25th winningest program in college football history currently. SCar is 95. VT could legitimately not win a single game for the next 10 years and still be ahead of them. Yeah they can beat the SEC drum, but they are historically a doormat program.

Also of note: even after totally opposite past decades, Clemson is only five spots ahead at 20. Really consider them a peer program in many regards. Pry was right in his latest interview, that we were Clemson before they were. Absolutely no reason why we can't get back to winning under the right leadership.

I think that recent win over Clemson has gotten into their head.

Sackerlina fans are really that bad, yeesh

It's really refreshing to be on the winning side of this type of Twitter post by a recruit 🤣

They really are

The comments he is getting are insane. Trash fans, I really hope VT doesn't have these types but I'm sure most fanbases do unfortunately.

Somewhere, the USC coaches had thoughts of a flip. Then their fans did this.

We do unfortunately

Some observations...

Of the WR's we've got commitments from, and a number of WR's on the roster, this is the most game ready one IMO. He is quick in space along with having great top end speed. He's kind of a do it all WR for Green Run and the coaching staff seems to try a lot of different things to get the ball in his hands. Once he has the ball he's very elusive. He is much more fluid in and out of his "breaks" (if you can call them that) than his peers and appears to use his hips really well when he changes directions.,

He gives me some serious Eddie Royal - Percy Harvin vibes (with a slightly bigger frame). It's impossible to project how well someone will do, but he's a REALLY good prospect for the VT offense IMO. This is exactly the type of player you'd expect to see in a big time SEC offense.

Is coronavirus over yet?

USCe fans have constantly been little brother to Clemson in SC and an also ran in the SEC. They have a really big chip on their shoulder and think really really highly of their school. I guess because they're sometimes good at baseball and women's basketball?

I mean I can see why they're so miserable Columbia SC is an awful place and its ungodly hot and humid there right now.

Always has been. The humidity there is so bad the air feels thick. Hard to breathe, really.

i visited a friend in columbia once when i was in blacksburg and when i got out of my car there i thought i had mistakenly driven into a dog's mouth

pretty sure Columbia counts as the other end of the dog

I only stopped in that city once in my life and I would agree with that comment.

not sure how you spend your spare time and i dont really care to know either, but mouth is the only part inside of a dog that i have a sensory reference point for

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Never had a gland issue with a dog then........ Not that most people don't take them to the vet instead of saving the $$.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I feed her pumpkin and pay the $90 if she gets too stinky

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

We pay a groomer to do it. When we found out our pup had gland issues, we briefly considered DIY, watched a YouTube video, and NOPED out immediately

Every second counts

It is nasty to think about, but easy to do if you can get in a mindset to not get grossed out. Sister-in-law is a vet. Made it seem so simple and she was so whatever about it I felt stupid paying so much for something that takes less time than I can hold my breath for.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

In my experience, once I had a kid buttholes just weren't a big deal anymore.

Grammar is important, there is a vital comma missing here!

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I also have no reference point for anything inside of a dog apart from the mouth. But I do have an imagination

Been there so many times for Army graduations. It isn't the best place, but not the worst I've been to. It can always be worse.

I lived there for 2 years its by far the worst place I've lived
