Brentford announced that they signed Freiburg GK Mark Flekken, signaling that David Raya is likely to move on this summer (Spurs is too obvious of a landing spot)
Seems like most of the Americans in the top flight leagues are moving.
Pulisic HAS to move on from Chelski. Bundesliga makes sense, although I'd hate having to root against him twice a year. Also seen Juve rumors.
McKennie back to Juve.
Tyler Adams name has popped up in several places. Think he'll stay in the Prem. My money is on Newcastle.
Aaronson could move, but I think he ends up staying if they promise more playing time. I don't think he takes a rotation position at another Prem club, so if he wants playing time and doesn't stay at Leeds, Bundesliga is his best bet.
Dest to Berlin. That's gonna be a fucking nightmare for opposing teams with how much Union emphasizes counterattacking.
Pepi probably moving to a permanent deal in the Netherlands.
Musah moving on from Valencia, possibly to Prem.
I'm sure there are a bunch I left out.
Yeah a lot of players will be moving this summer
Haven't seen much on Pulisic outside of Juve (not much better than Chelsea) and AC Milan
Doubt McKennie will stay at Juve. Not sure where, maybe back to the Bundesliga?
Feyenoord bid for Pepi today, that would be great.
Think Musah interest has cooled since the winter. He might stay, but he needs more playing time.
Heard Tim Weah might be on the move, maybe Brighton?
Balogun linked with both Milan clubs as well he seems to want a permanent move from north London right now which would be interesting.
If any team in the Bundesliga were to move for McKennie, it would be Dortmund. Serviceable Bellingham role-filler for maybe 20% the price. Plus it gives them an American player to sell jerseys. The fact that it makes so much sense is what makes it so unlikely for Dortmund. They'll find a way to bottle the off-season just like the regular season
Not sure how deep his connection is to Schalke, but I believe he spent a decent amount of time there even before he broke through. Seems unlikely he would go to their biggest rival, no? Maybe one of the teams in the Europa mix like Frankfurt, Leverkusen, or Wolfsburg?
I kinda doubt it would factor into his decision. He's not a local or a fan. Besides, Schalkes not even in the first division next year, so he wouldn't have to play against them.
Of the other options, Frankfurt makes quite a bit of sense, especially if Kamada moves this year. Wolfsburg already have Maxi Arnold in the role McKennie tends to play, so they're probably out. Neverkusen could definitely use some help in midfield, so I hope he doesn't land there, and may they be relegated to the Regionalliga.
Dortmund are going after Edson Álvarez so not sure they would also go for a similar midfielder in McKennie.

Edson to Dortmund is in the main post. Looks like it's going to happen soon now that Bellingham is gone.
But they're not really similar players. Edson is a DM, McKennie a CM. Misconception that McKennie is an DM since he occasionally played there at Schalke. And Dortmund is also losing Dahoud (a CM) and Guerreiro (filled in at CM). The could definitely use more help.
The Dortmund link was a while ago and I haven't heard anything since, so I don't think it's serious.
Newcastle have been linked with James Maddison, Harvey Barnes, Joao Felix, Ferran Torres, and are allegedly courting Kane and Neymar...
Most of that is nonsense most likely. Alike most man united transfer rumors clubs and agents will use Newcastle's riches and ambition to stir crap all the time for their clients. Personally they should look at someone like Tyler Adams, maybe a better left wing and maybe someone to take burns spot at the left back.
Agreed. I honestly don't want a Neymar of Kane. The system isn't broke right now...
Mason mount is a confusing one to me. Is a bit like Bruno and could leave the midfield way exposed with casemiro having to cover him and Bruno. Maybe I'm biased but mount seems an odd player for united to pursue this summer.
Yeah idk how it will fit. I'd like to have him at Arsenal but I think the price will end up being too high
I hope united fleece Chelsea on it if they do the deal Chelsea have zero power in this deal with one year left on his contract and he won't re-up. Would like to think they could capitalize on Chelsea's need for money but we will see. Bohely has proven to be an idiot in the market so far so who knows.
He's a better 8 than 10. One of those players who isn't exceptional at any single thing but is pretty good at everything, so there's an inherent tradeoff when you swap him with another player. Plus look at the management/coaching mess he's had. Still think he could kick onto another level, but even now he's a really good prem player
Edit: also he is young and english and available. The window for united now is as much about '23-24 as it is '25-26. Need a bit of a squad refresh as other players age
Hmmm still worry he and Bruno would have casemiro dead legged by 60 mins but I admit I haven't really watched him too hard but when I have I've been meh on it. United badly need to refresh the midfield eriksen isnt getting younger and need it move on from Fred atleast and give them better depth. Sabitzer deal looking not likely at the moment so this seems logical but the price tag ATM is absurdly high for a player with one year left on his contract
young, english, available, and united
Unfortunately yes that's all about right. Curious if united are savvy or stupid and negotiate well or in their normal dumb fashion.
Mount was great in Tuchel's box midfield. Probably his ideal deployment in regards to allowing him to express his best qualities.
I could see him thriving in a similar setup again.
Dunno how ten Haag will move his midfield going forward he seems to prefer a 3 man line but I could see united being lethal with a striker alongside rashford up top with a box midfield behind with Bruno and mount as 8s working. They do need someone alongside casemiro though to help who isn't mctominay
I just want Levy out and a new manager
Done with Spurs man. It's sad. Going to Liverpool so my cousin and I have a similar team to cheer for.
I'll also support Newcastle, I hope they get Tyler Adams and I enjoyed watching them this season.
EDIT: Also want to say I'll support Kane and Son wherever and no matter what. I love watching them play. Kane's 30 goals is much, much better than Haaland's 36 imo. I really want to see Kane leave and go to a club where he can win a trophy.
The best part of Villa qualifying for Europe and having billionaire owners is we're linked with all the same players vtnerf listed for Newcastle above, except they're all less likely to come to Birmingham. Oh, and the annual link to Tammy Abraham. The only thing I know for sure is Emery wants Guendozi in his midfield. We need another striker and an upgrade to Buendia/Bailey.
Any shot you are going to the Newcastle-Villa game in Philly in July?
Thinking about it. Definitely NOT going to the FedEx game, because fuck that hellhole.
Philly isn't bad for soccer. And the stadium is nice, parking is nice, and plenty of room for fanfest set up to browse before the game.
The Linc is great! I saw the US play Turkey before the 2010 World Cup. Fans started booing the U8 teams they sent out there as halftime entertainment, it couldn't get more Philly than that. Are you going? It's awesome to see live, but it's tougher to get excited when it's a game that doesn't matter. And nothing is like Villa Park (for soccer, at least).
Yeah, taking my boys to see them. One is city and one is liverpool, but all will be in magpie gear that day.
Everyone can put this one on hold for another year, Abraham tore his ACL over the weekend.
So a question for all the euro Soccer fans...Who is your team and how did you pick your team?
Arsenal, because Thierry Henry. One of my favorite athletes of all time.
Liverpool because when I was a wee lad and Michael Owen was a young superstar for England he was the one player I wanted to model my game after (I identified with him because I was really really fast in my youth - routinely the top 2 fastest players on the pitch when I was playing soccer). He happened to play for Liverpool at the time (and came up through Liverpool's academy, if I'm not mistaken) though he ended up being somewhat of a journeyman when his career was sorta of plagued by injuries. I'm sort of a casual fan, though. But that's my story.
When I was first getting into soccer my freshman year at Tech, Premier League was the only one really ever on TV. My bud across the hall was a United fan, so I just started casually supporting them. Gotta say, I don't really watch many United games anymore. I just don't care very much about English football.
Got into German football kinda by accident. I was on duty one Saturday morning in Pensacola. Empty building, I'm just there to do rounds and answer the phone. Absolutely nothing going on, and limited options on TV, so I put on Wolfsburg vs somebody. Wolfsburg were absolutely controlling the game, and then near the end managed to fuck it away and either tie or lose. Being a Hokie fan in 2015/16, this feeling was familiar to me, so I just started following Wolfsburg.
In 2019, girlfriend and I went to Germany for Christmas. Her grandparents live in Köln, so that's where we spent most of our time. The city is great, the people are great, the soccer team was absolute dogshit, but the fans were loyal, boisterous, and tended to sell out the stadium even when they were in the second tier. Loved the culture, so I decided rooting for a club in a different division wouldn't conflict with supporting Wolfsburg. And then come May the fuckers got promoted. Over the course of the next season, I found myself paying more attention to Köln than Wolfsburg. I had more of a connection to the city, and just found that I really loved the club. So now on Saturday mornings for 34 weeks a year, you'll find a Köln flag flying outside the house (confuses the shit out of the neighbors), and I'll be chugging Reissdorf and yelling at the TV. I think my birthday present this year is gonna be a membership.
I was living in Ocean City for the summer ('96 before my last year) and the Olympics were on for a bit. Made it even better that we lived with 3 from the UK, one from London, one from Dublin, and one from Edinburgh. They had their own inter-fighting just like colleges and states and pro sports team fan bases here. I had watched a wee bit of the Premier League by then, but hadn't fully selected a team. Just enjoyed the game (played up until high school, and prob would have started my freshman year but we were trbl, and I played golf.) The 3 kept bugging me to pick a team, and well, my favorite color was Red. I asked them if they could get me a Robbie Fowler Manchester United jersey. The one left the room. One fell out of his chair laughing, and the other girl almost slapped me. Come to find out it was like asking a commanders fan to buy a Cowboys jersey. So, I went with my other favorite player, Alan Shearer. It also helped that the Newcastle beer logo was on the front of the kit.

We had it on tap at the bar I worked at, and Tuesday nights were Irish nights. The majority of the work visas in OC at that time were Irish, so we had a night for them. But they didn't come out until after their restaurants they were working at closed for the night. I'd wear the Newcastle jersey, and at midnight hop behind the bar and start prepping glasses of Guinness. I'd get 5 or so Irish kids and chug race them in Guinness, wearing my Newcastle jersey. It was glorious. (Especially when I beat them every time...I ended up drinking for free and getting tips from the bartender and $ from the kids I beat.) Stuck with them thru the thick and thin. Cherry on top, my wife's technical home office (where her boss technically works when not at home) is overlooking St. James Park. It was kismet.
Man united and prime bald Wayne Rooney was my childhood idol, he didn't get any f*cks and was pure chaos it was beautiful.
I grew up in London (early 80s)-my dad was a lifelong Liverpool fan so I inherited it from him. Our first game was Liverpool at Arsenal at the old highbury in 1981 and my brother asked "who's the team in red?" Since then he's been an Arsenal fan. We lived sort of near Wembley so went there the most but Queens Park Rangers was the closest First Division (the old Premier League) club so we went there a lot too. I've been to Anfield a handful of times but mostly we went to see Liverpool when they came to London. Back then Liverpool were dominant-much more so than today (well, as far as trophies go-we didn't have Man City or Man United as a force back then). We came to the DC area in the mid 80s so my fandom waned a bit but was reignited in the late 90s as the Premier League was readily available on TV.
I saw Arsenal play Coventry at Highbury in 98. That was a great stadium. Went to see the apartment complex they built there last time I was in London.
No way! I went to see Arsenal v Sheffield Wednesday that same year (I'm pretty sure it was that season)-my brother went to London for his 40th (so 10 years ago) at the Emirates and when he enquired about tickets they laughed at him. We got our tickets to Wednesday the day before...times have changed. I used to really love Highbury so convenient and a classic old gem. Shame they had to move but it made sense.
That was my last (and only) Premier League game.
Absolutely. Tried getting tickets in 2013 and it was impossible. Highest priced season tickets in all of Europe if I'm not mistaken. The 98 game, my cousin took me (he lived in London) and as you said, we got the tickets a couple of days before. No big deal.
In December 2013, I went to see West Ham against West Brom. The famous Anelka quenelle scandal. Great, great game. Got the tickets from some season ticket holder. Tried going to Chelsea-Liverpool but it was impossible. Went to ManU-Tottenham on January 1st, 2014 at Old Trafford. My brother is a lifelong ManU fan and he actually got the tickets from Chicharito's agent at the time, whose office was next door to my brother's office in Mexico City. He just asked him if there were any tickets available. He offered to pay for them, but the agent told him it was no problem. Nobody was asking for January 1st tickets. The craziest part is when we went to pick up the tickets inside Old Trafford, we saw so many girls getting their tickets, left to them by De Gea, Rooney, and Ferdinand. Those are the 3 Premiership/Premier League games I've been to.
arsenal!
i picked them because when i was in undergrad back in 2007-2011 i got into doing ESPN Streak For The Cash and a lot of the earlier props in the day are european/global sports. i'd do some mild research on a game to pick and then since i was on a college schedule, i'd pull up a stream and watch it -- i really fell in love with the Cesc Fabregas-Robin Van Persie-Theo Walcott-young Jack Wilshere-young Aaron Ramsey version of Arsenal. fun to watch with compelling characters on the team and a legendary manager.
in hindsight it was a little like if i became a tech fan in 2012 -- just after the best years with an all-timer boss hanging on to a certain way of doing things just a little too long, and the transition plan was bungled and required a painful rebuild to dig back out of
I don't follow much in international soccer as I tend to focus on DC United these days. Only team I check in on a stream occasionally are the Wurzburger Kickers. I went to Elementary school K-3 in Wurzburg while my dad was stationed at Giebelstaadt Army Airfield. They tend to be near the top of the Bayern Regionalliga but that's really my only interest over there. I will tune in to some of the top matchups kind of like watching playoff games, not a fan but easy to watch.
Good on you for following local. I would love to watch more DC but the new Apple deal was too much for me.
As for picking a team, I always just say to watch as many games as possible and see who you end up rooting for most of the time.
As for me, I started supplementing Arsenal around 2007-2008. A lot of my soccer teammates supported them so I decided to check them out. The free-flowing attacking style with highly technical, creative playmakers like Nasri, Rosicky, and Fabregas and absolutely no semblance of defense pulled me in and I never looked back.
Although I'm biased, Arsenal is a fairly easy club to support nowadays. Young, exciting players who will only improve, score a lot of goals, young up and coming manager who's a former club captain, outstanding home support and atmosphere, and at times last season was one of the best teams in Europe.
Got on board with Brian McBride and Fulham during the miracle campaign of 2007. Been hardcore ever since then and been over multiple times to see games at the Cottage. What a spectacular place to take in some footie.
How did you go about getting tickets? I've always wanted to visit Anfield, but all I could ever come up with was going with a supporters group or getting a Hospitality package.
Damn you're lucky I've always had a soft spot for the cottage looks like an amazing place to see a game like Everton as well. Old west ham ground was on my bucket list till it got replaced. I love the old stadiums with character.
I went to a game at White Heart Lane during Tottenham's final season at the stadium. I agree, big stadiums can be impressive but they just don't have the character of the old stadiums.
LFC, I remember the Gerrard slip, and I'm a sucker for sad story (i.e. VT sports). When Lebron wore the Liver bird hat at one of his pressers I said, maybe that's the team I should support. I was just getting into football, and I was doing a lot of traveling overseas for work. I was amazed at how a city/country could be shut down for events like the Euro's, so I said, it's time to choose a team. I started out with your Barca's and your Bayern's but I kept going back to that sad story of the Gerrard slip. I watched the Brandon Rodgers doc series when I was overseas, and I was hooked. I loved the history of the club.
Fast forward to today, I got a present from my wife for Xmas, a 23 and Me kit, because she knew I wanted to determine the amount of Native American heritage in my blood. Come to find out there was ZERO, LOL. I was actually part Nigerian, and part British. Some more digging, and you guessed it, my blood-line traces back to Merseyside. It was at that moment that I knew it was written in the stars that I was born to be a Scouser :)
The mighty Aston Villa because Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Young were going to take that team places when I got sucked in after the 2006 World Cup. Turns out that place was just 6th place, and then eventually relegation, but they had me hooked by then. Following your team down into the Championship is like supporting a basement dwelling ACC football team that used to be good. Teaches you to take pleasure in the little things.
Chelsea because I loved watching Didier Drogba and I was a big Michael Ballack fan.
Liverpool. We got the Fox Soccer Channel in the dorms, so between watching games and playing FIFA, they were the team I found myself rooting for. Guys like Dirk Kuyt, Xabi Alonso, Gerrard and Torres made them fun to watch. Still have never held a passport and now have a 7mo, but I plan to visit eventually.
West Ham - my wife and I went to London in 2011 and wanted to go to a PL game. We got to the Boleyn Tavern a couple of hours before the match and had a fantastic time singing along with all of the hammers fans (Stamford Bridge is falling down was our favorite). The game, the atmosphere at the Boleyn Ground, and the fans immediately had me hooked and I've been following them as closely as the Hokies since then.
Looking forward to the ECL final this afternoon and hopefully, finally seeing West Ham win a trophy.
I remember going there in the early 80s for a Liverpool game. We didn't wear any colors as it's a bit of a rough area (or used to be) and I distinctly remember the West Ham fans pissing on the Liverpool fans from the upper deck. So yeah, I guess it's atmospheric.
There's a silly Roberto Firmino to St. Louis CITY SC rumor that won't die and I can't get enough of it.
I would love to see Bobby stateside, as well as Messi. I'm here for it!
I live in Portland now...trust me the Timbers need him. Come on, Bobby!
Him leaving on a free was the cherry on top to a rough campaign KopH. I'm still heartbroken...
Think it's because the GM was sporting director at Hoffenheim when he moved there. But if he's getting interest from Real Madrid, I doubt he's coming to St. Louis.
For the it takes the cake rumor of the summer so far we have an MLS club in inter Miami buying then loaning messi back to the wee club called FC Barcelona so they can financially make the deal work. I have no idea who's leaking that other than Barcelona and if they are that messed up financially to team up with an MLS team to try and make it work that kind of tells us all we need to know about their finances this summer.
I'm not really sure how this would help Barca financially unless Miami is paying some of his wages while he's playing there? He's a free agent, so Barca wouldn't need to pay a transfer fee.
They are reporting a 2B deal for him to go Saudi now, so it may not matter.
They definitely are messed up enough financially to try something like this. They have repeatedly borrowed money to complete transfers assuming they will make enough to pay it off on the future. On top of the La Liga has restricted their wages because they were on the verge of bankruptcy.
EDIT: This was meant to be a reply to hokienator's comment
Oh my Celtic friend is gonna be mad at me🥺
Benzema moving on was very sudden. Madrid needing a new first choice 9 for the first time since 2009 makes for a potentially explosive summer window. I think they will prioritize Kane, but if that doesn't happen things will get very interesting.
Where do they go if that doesn't work out?
That's where it gets interesting. A few options in no particular order:
* Budget version: Firmino + Joselu (or similar player): This one makes sense timeline wise given some of the things I will discuss in the point below. I think this one would draw the ire of the fanbase quite a bit though. Taking a 30+ Liverpool "cast off" and an elder, but decent La Liga striker familiar with the club, would probably temper expectations and ruffle some feathers. It's a very pragmatic option, and again, fits some timelines, but it probably won't be a very popular option. To be clear, I think fans would LOVE the idea of Firmino as a second choice striker given how we haven't had a reliable backup striker since Morata in 16/17.
* Enter Osimhen sweepstakes: This one would be interesting because ADL has a ton of leverage right now, so this fee is likely the highest possible one this summer if he leaves. It's also interesting because there appears to be a lot of quiet confidence from club leadership/Flo that Mbappe or Haaland could be signed in the next couple years. Buying Osimhen and then getting Haaland means you probably have to sell on Osimhen, just as an example. Again, I'm not trying to be one of those "We getting err'body" fans, but there appears to be a lot of confidence that the door is not closed on either of the Mbappe/Haaland options.
* Kai Havertz + Joselu (or similar player): I don't love this one, not because I don't think Havertz is a quality player, but I don't think he is a true 9, and we've seen him struggle to be exactly that in a weird Chelsea situation the last few years. So this one doesn't really solve our troubles with a lack of a true 9. If Havertz comes, I would want him playing as some kind of hybrid winger/SS type player with a better 9 option on the pitch as well.
* Vlahovic + Joselu (or similar player): I don't really love this one. The poacher style striker hasn't been a part of the Madrid attack for the better part of 15 years, at least not with any consistency. I also think Vlahovic would cost more than he's worth.
* Surprise 9 option emerges: No notes here
Thanks. For me, Kane makes the most sense as a like for like Benzema replacement, but who knows how he/Spurs will handle this summer. Many are saying at this point it seems like he will just stay and break Shearer's record, but who knows. Even with his age/contract I still think it will take close to 100m to get him out so at that point you might as well go for Oshimen. Can Real afford that and 100m for Bellingham?
Will get no arguments from me if it happens (please get the robot man out of England) but I find it hard to see Haaland leaving? Unless maybe Pep leaves. He's already getting paid an absurd salary, he is the beneficiary of a chance-creating machine of epic proportions, and will probably win the treble in his first year with the club. Other than living in Madrid >>>>> living in Manchester, not sure I see the benefit for him.
1. I agree he is the most like for like replacement for Benzema and best option for immediate future.
2. Yes, they can afford that, but they probably can't afford for it to be another Hazard situation in terms of on field success in the near term. That is the primary concern from the fanbase with Kane.
3. I think Madrid gets a better price than another PL club would pay for Kane, like United, because Levy wouldn't be selling him to a direct rival and have previous good negotiations/relationship with Real Madrid.
On Haaland:
It's been reported from multiple T1 sources that Haaland wanted to go to Madrid, but balked because of the presence of Benzema, who at the time was having the best season of his career. Who knows how long the Pep project continues at City. He's already stayed there longer than anywhere else. Additionally, another timing issue was that Madrid was clearly prioritizing and expecting Mbappe to come to Madrid until the 11th hour. While Madrid were tied up waiting for the Mbappe saga to play out, City was able to capitalize on the slow play and get him locked up. Benz presence + waiting for Mbappe led to a situation where a formal offer was never even made.
Read a crazy stat the other day, I could be off by a couple of numbers, but they said Hazard's goal return for Real was like 17M a goal...
He scored something like 6-7 total goals so that sounds feasible.
One of the worst signings of all time and one of the most personally disappointing. I pretty regularly tuned in to Chelsea matches for many years because I enjoyed watching him play football. It's a shame that I was so excited to see that week in and week out and instead things played out like they did. The silver lining is that his inability to stay healthy or perform when available likely led to Vinicius having his breakthrough when he did.
3. That's true. I can't decide what would be funnier - Kane leaves Spurs and immediately wins a trophy with Madrid, which he surely would. Or, he goes to United for a stupid amount of money and prevents them from fixing any of their other squad holes.
On Haaland: That makes sense. He certainly seems like a Madrid player in that he's the best in the world at his position, and I feel like the best players in the world who come from countries without top teams tend to end up there. I'm really hoping City winning the treble will cause Pep to get bored and go away, but it's hard to predict what that man will do.
My guess is that Tottenham agree to sell Kane to Real Madrid for about 80m with stipulations that:
This theory is mostly centered around the idea that City will refuse to sell Haaland, so Madrid will have to wait until his contract is nearly expired. In the meantime, they will "settle" for Kane, who will accept leaving Tottenham to win trophies for a few years, before ultimately returning to Tottenham to break the all-time scoring record.
He is still nearly 50 goals shy, so he'll need at least two seasons. But that assumes that he doesn't have any drop off, doesn't get injured, etc. Might need three seasons to be safe.
That assumes Haaland hasn't already broken 260 in the next 3-4 years /s
Yeah certainly some assumptions are being made, but I'd back Harry to do it. In 3 years he will be 32, and as a player that does not rely on physical attributes, I can see him performing at a high-ish level until 35. He did have injury problems early in his career, but I'd blame that on youthful exuberance more than anything. He actually used to press with some aggression, which he has stopped in recent years (likely a combination of self-preservation and passive tactics).
Just a lot of moving parts for it all to line up perfectly. Kane to Madrid, Haaland to Madrid, Kane back to Spurs, but surely Spurs would have moved on in 3-4 years time? He needs to slot right back in and start every game again, might not go over so well with whoever is the starting striker at that point.
It all makes sense on paper but it would take a lot of things going perfectly to plan and that seems very unlikely considering we're talking about the transfer market.
Kane is the greatest to have ever played for Tottenham. They would kick someone else to the curb to bring home the prodigal son. Similar situation as Bale a few years ago.
So I get the whole needing elite forwards and link to mbappe being obvious but how would that work with Vini there and thriving on the left wing? Mbappe has said publicly he doesn't like playing down the middle and always prefers the wing play so would he maybe work the right wing then? Seems like silly money when you already have such a good player in vini unless he leaves which would stun me.
The answer to that question is pretty simple. You make it work somehow, and since Mbappe is the more positionally malleable player, he will be the one to move around. It's going to either be playing as the CF and combining on the left with Vini like Benz has been doing for years with Vini and Ronaldo before him OR he plays the pseudo RW/SS role that Rodrygo has been playing primarily since April, where he plays as a RW while defending and in transition, but primarily plays off the striker on the left-side during build up or extended possession, creating overloads on the left.
Roles are more important than strict positions, and they will find out a way to make it work (if Mbappe ends up in Madrid).
I like Vlahovic, but I doubt they go that way after the Jovic fiasco and Vlahovic's own time at Juventus. Feel like he ends up at Bayern if they sell him. I do like him, though.
Havertz is a tough one. After Madrid spent >100 on Jude, not sure they have a big enough purse for Kane and Havertz. Even if they miss on Kane, Chelsea might want to sell Havertz at a higher fee than Kane as he is younger and has 2 years left on his contrct.
The money is there for Kane, for sure, but there is a limit Flo will be willing to pay. If Levy tries to pull some funny business at the end I could see the deal fall through. Right now, it appears that the negotiations are primarily being stalled/kept from becoming official until Tottenham are able to line up a replacement option.
Agree on Vlahovic. The poacher style striker is not a seamless fit in the current Madrid side and style of play. I think it would only work if the poacher was a more "sure thing" than Vlahovic, plus I don't think I'd like the price Juve would ask.
Havertz is interesting. I think he's a quality player, but he is not an easy player to fit into his best role which is playing off a striker. The SS/10 type player is harder to fit into top sides with regularity these days, and he's not at his best as a winger or true striker. I won't be upset if he doesn't come because I think the price Chelsea want will be too high for the difficulty of implementing him effectively. That said, he could probably play the role we've had Rodrygo playing since early April.
Fab HWG'd mac allister to pool, saying the release clause is significantly less than the £60m previously reported
Yep, updated. Weird that we still don't know how much it is. Like he says that it's "way less" but hasn't said how much it actually is?
And now the posturing from Andy Naylor (tier 1 bha) that nothing has been agreed between the clubs blah blah blah
Man, that guy is really annoying. His whole thing during the January Caicedo saga was so weird.
I find it really strange that they don't seem to have the whole "don't cover a team you support" thing in England. I'm sure it happens in the US, but most journalists are just doing a job and don't actually care if the team is good or not other than how it affects their work. But in England, it sure seems like 99% of journalists just end up covering their favorite team, which I think is weird and leads to guys like Naylor reporting Arsenal's £70m bid for Caicedo as "derisory."
i think it's more that brighton just use him as their mouthpiece, he publishes what bha leak to him so that he can keep his club insider access -- BHA tell him it's derisory so it gets published as being derisory so the negotiating plays out in public
Yeah, that aspect I understand - him being a fan isn't why he reported it that way. Still think the whole fan thing is odd and seems ethically gray. But it's certainly not limited to Naylor - I'm pretty sure every single Arsenal journalist I've read has been a supporter since they were young.
I hope we can get Caicedo, but it's looking increasingly unlikely as Chelsea have dropped out of the Ugarte race and I'm sure will offer him a 15-year, 800k p/w contract.
Villa is the same way. Birmingham Mail is on their 4th correspondent in the last 15 years and they've all been Villa supporters. Like, the farewell from the last one and the intro for the new one to into detail about how big of a Villa fan each one is. It has pros and cons; the mouthpiece at times, like you mentioned, but they also tend to be passionate about what they're covering, which I feel adds a dimension to the reporting.
Yeah, it's certainly not all negative. It's a much different experience to listen to a podcast hosted solely by journalists from respected outlets that are all drinking the fan Kool-Aid just as much as the rest of us. Obviously, some are better at it than others, but I just can't imagine being able to write objectively about the team I support in the way that we're so used to here in the US.
But then again, there are times I read pieces from writers over here and wonder if they could possibly be more out of touch with the fans who are reading their content. Just a cultural oddity that I hadn't really noticed until now.
Every club has their leak guys who they give info to once you follow a team for years you'll pick up on who it is and personally I tend to not follow the united ones as they are plugs for the glazers who are the main issue. Sometimes they have nuggets but usually it's just club centric bs
😳😳😳
No wonder they want 100m for Caicedo...
If this figure is true, I'm left speechless. That's daylight robbery right there. Supporters like to say that FSG is tight with the wallet (and I agree); however, they have a talent for finding transfer personnel who have a knack for reading the fine print in release clauses written by other teams. Oh my days!
Hoping this gets across the line today, so we can turn our attention to other midfield signings. Losing out on Jude was a blow, but I was in full support of losing out on Jude if it meant rebuilding our midfield with 2 or 3 signings. This is a great start. UTFR
Edit: It's official AMA is ours, what a bit of business there! Get IN! On to the next one...hopefully....please FSG don't screw me over lol
I'm pretty sure release clauses are illegal in England, but there was definitely some sort of handshake/wink agreement when he signed his new deal recently.
I can't help but be impressed by some of Liverpools deals, both in timing and fees. Getting both Diaz and Gakpo in the winter before they had massive competition and higher fees is a good example.
The only complaint I would have is that they waited too long for the midfield rebuild. It's clear that Bellingham was a factor in that, but that's the one major misstep, you have to say. Regardless, an impressive track record.
While I am not as high on MacAllister as some, there's no doubt that 35m is a steal and I think Klopp's system is a good fit for him.
Yeah I agree JG, we waited 2-3 years too long for midfield reinforcements. I think the Thiago signing gave us a false sense of security, and then the pursuit for the quadruple, killed all the legs we had left. Add in the reliance on youth too much, and it was a recipe for disaster. We have a lot more work to do, but this is a great start. Gotta close though.
Same as what we paid for Andy Carroll...'memba him? He's still kicking about in the Championship, apparently
Koph, I read that stat, and laughed out loud. They said with inflation it'd be a 89M deal nowadays LOL
Shock! Who could have seen this coming?
I don't remember how reliable this guy is, but....
Lot of confirmations appearing now. Tickets for the CLT FC at BoA have already gone up as well. Figure they may open the upper bowl.
That guy is not particularly reliable, but others have heavily hinted at or reported it as well at this point.
Inter Miami wages + some sort of profit sharing plans with Apple and Adidas. Also the possibility of some kind of club equity/future ownership stake plan.
It makes a lot of sense. Those kind of third party financial incentives + living in Miami, the biggest Spanish Speaking/Lat Am city in America vs the huge wages to live in SA. I can see how he would choose Miami.
Ticket sales for all Inter Miami matches are about to EXPLODE. Apple+ subs for the MLS package as well. Which, for the record, I think the MLS Apple+ deal has been awesome. Having no blackout games + you can toggle between the broadcast announcers and the home team radio call for home matches is awesome. I much prefer to listen to Jason Longshore and Mike Conti for Atlanta United matches.
I have heard nothing but good things about Apple's coverage, but it's just hard for me to justify buying a streaming plan for just MLS. I was going to get ESPN+ this year in part for MLS, but also because they have other things I wanted. Even if the product quality is worse, I'd rather have that.
I have both. Apple+ I split with a friend who is an Atlanta United fan. I already had ESPN+ for years, which I will be keeping for certain as long as they have the La Liga rights.
I completely agree with this, the pricing is way too high for the MLS. You can get every PL match and Peacock's entire library for $50 a year. $99 for just the MLS is absurd especially with a lower quality of play. I would love to watch DC United games but I cannot justify that price.
It will be interesting to see if Apple/MLS release subscription numbers later this year and if they make any changes for next season. I would like to see team specific plans at a lower price point or to have the MLS games in included in the Apple+ standard subscription.
I'm sure they'll see a huge uptick after the Messi news. Doubt they'll go backwards and include it in standard Apple+ subscription, but maybe a bundle/reduced price deal.
I used to watch DC United all the time when I was a kid. Was going to try and start following them again, but alas. If I was already an MLSer, I would probably do it, but it's still a high price for me. Oh well
I'm definitely interested in seeing the exact details of the deal. I mean living in Miami as a stupid wealthy person has its benefits, but Barca and the Saudis (especially the Saudis) were throwing massive amounts of cash at him. I'm curious to see if those details are equal or close. It felt like the Inter Miami option was a distant third so for him to actually choose it, it must have been more lucrative than initially thought. I just have a hard time believing living the States and playing in MLS would be the deciding factor though I guess when you're already stupid wealthy like Messi is, money isn't that big of a factor even if the Saudis are throwing around the GDP of small countries at you
I know Messi isn't Ronaldo, but what Ronaldo's experiment showed is the expectation level for play and actions on the field, along with the basic intention that you will bring that team a championship and beyond is a lot for someone near the end of their career.
I don't think the Inter Miami deal is rivaling the Saudi deal on raw cash incentives, but I think we will find out these third party incentives are very significant.
Additionally, Miami is 1 hr time difference from Buenos Aires. Traveling to Argentina will never have been easier for he and his family since he moved away as a little kid to Barcelona. His wife apparently expressed that she did not want to go to Saudi Arabia, and as stated, Miami is the LatAm capital of the US and they can live there comfortably speaking only/mostly Spanish. The quality of life and amenities in Miami will be more similar to Barcelona and I think that is playing a major factor as well.
I think on balance it hits the majority of what is likely their destination checklist.
Apparently, the family will stay mainly in Barcelona. That's what Messi said to Mundo Deportivo and Sport, both Barcelona tabloids.
Messi to Miami is confirmed, Here We Go from Fabrizio.
I kind of wonder how much he'll actually play, or if he'll be conveniently injured for trips to Yankee Stadium and Toronto in October.
Picking up Messi is great for the commercial aspect of MLS. For Miami, it brings more tourists to the stadium and more season tickets for locals as it has one of the largest Hispanic populations in the US. As for how he performs, it will be interesting to see. Messi has been running less and less as his age advances. As he has gotten away from goal, his ability to make the last pass or create chances for teammates has increased.
From what I've seen (and it's not much) the MLS seems to be a high-intensity, physical league. Players who have gotten there past their peak have struggled to get into a rhythm so we will see how he does. In any case, it's great for the league as a whole since there will be much more attention to it globally, and more importantly, locally.
also a league that runs over the summer and requires LOTS of travel
That's what Rooney mentioned. 3 time zones, travel and play in the summer, going coast to coast. The thing about the domestics over there is the spread of the Prem is the size of Colorado and New Mexico. It's a lot.
this might have something to do with it
According to Fabrizio Romano, Ricardo Pepi close to joining PSV from Augsburg after spending last season on loan at Groningen. For USMNT player and sporting director Earnie Stewart is SD at PSV (although they haven't hired a coach yet which worries me).
But this is a good next step for Pepi. If he can make his way into a regular starter at PSV that is very good news for the US and would surely get him an even bigger move down the line if he wanted one.
Arsenal has been in on Rice for a long time, but it appears there is renewed ambition for getting Caicedo as well.
A Rice - Caicedo - Odegaard midfield would be an incredible long term play given their quality and ages.
They've always been in for him but most didn't think (I'm still skeptical) that we'd be able to get both. I figured Chelsea would outbid us for Caicedo and we wouldn't want to drop almost 200m on two midfielders.
Also, if it happens, I have a suspicion that Caucedo will play quite a bit of RB. Zinchenko and/or Caicedo inverting into midfield will allow us to play another attacking midfielder in Xhaka's spot
Is Caicedo the player that injured Martinelli at the end of the season? Either way, he's awesome and I would gladly welcome him.
Rice is a little more of a question mark for me. Does he play as an 8 or 6 for Arteta? Position concerns me and I feel like he's got the 15%-overrated-because-he's-English vibe. Am I crazy?
Agree completely. Some of these players get a big boost just because they're English. I understand it's their league, but the prices I've seen for Rice are ridiculous. Hopefully, he proves me wrong, but he's never played for a contender or a tournament like the Champions League. And it's not like this hasn't happened before. I remember Andy Carroll and his £35 million move to Liverpool (more than 10 years ago when that was absurd money), just for him to completely fall off the map. There have been many others, I just though of Carroll first. I think you could get a french midfielder for half the price of Rice and achieve practically the same result. But we'll see.
Maybe, but he runs Englands midfield by himself. And being English is worth somethjng. He's homegrown, and it's always good to have key players meeting that requirement. Plus, he's a good candidate for getting generous calls from refs.
Honestly, I'm encouraged that Bayern is reportedly willing to match our bid. They don't pay that much for anyone.
English players will always come at a premium in the PL, however, Rice is that good. While he could play as a #8, he's becoming one of the best #6's in the world so that's where he needs to play. He's only 24, has already captained West Ham, just led them to a European trophy, and has cemented his place in the starting 11 for England.
This past season, he was top 10 in tackles for all positions, top 10 in blocks for midfielders, top 10 in clearances for midfielders, #1 overall in interceptions for all positions, top 10 for headed clearances for midfielders, top 10 for number of passes for all players, and #12 overall in number of touches for all players. He doesn't get injured (only missed a couple of games due to illness) and doesn't get fatigued easily. He's played 50 games for West Ham in each of the past two seasons while also playing in the majority of England's games and still performs at incredibly high levels each week.
He's only going to get better when he is surrounded by better teammates. His play allows other midfielders to push farther forward and to do so more often. They will not have to worry anywhere near as much about being hit on counter attacks and he will clean up after their mistakes.
SOLD, what an endorsement! Dang brother, you his agent? 🤣
Haha, I wish, I would love to have that cut of his salary.
his progressive carrying is elite -- his progressive passing leaves a lot to be desired at this point. he's basically Reciprocal Jorginho but 7 years younger in terms of what he offers in possession
Agree with Yetti's comment above, I'm sold on Rice. I think he might slot in as an 8 right away and against some teams where possession will be more up for grabs. I think long term he is our 6. I think he needs a little development in possession. Is he worth £90m? In this market, I don't think it's outrageous. Prices are rising fast, it won't look crazy at all in the next couple years.
Caicedo is the one who injured Martinelli, but he apologized after the game. And tbf, Martinelli's challenge on Mitoma was pretty terrible. I'm willing to let it slide, Caicedo is amazing lol
I am starting to drink the Kool-Aid on a Rice-Caicedo midfield overhaul. Caicedo deal hasn't really had any movement (I know the window isn't technically open yet) and it kind of seems like he might be waiting for Arsenal? Chelsea is the other big suitor and they don't seem to be doing anything on this front. And they can't offer CL.
Combine that with Castagne links (big spending in midfield leading to cheaper players in other areas of need) and it makes sense if you squint.
Gotta get Rice over the line ASAP so we can move on Caicedo before his agents get restless and then work on outgoing.
👀2️⃣more?
Onana put on a masterclass tonight in how much a good GK can make a team better. Just compare how united had to play last week with De Gea to how Inter comfortably handled citys press at time using his feet and you'll see why a good GK can make all the difference. Hard to believe inter got him on a free.
Crank the silly season into overdrive -- mbappe isn't going to renew when his deal ends next summer, and PSG won't let him walk for free
Florentino headed to Paris like:
How much does he go for though? Do Madrid go and throw more cash or do they play hard ball and try to get mbappe next summer for free? Sure they can't put him to market but if he only wants Madrid and Madrid play it tough there aren't too many willing to pay a big fee 180 plus probably that can actually do the deal right now.
If PSG were smart, they'd squeeze whatever they can get out of Madrid, sell Neymar and just use their academy and bring back all the other ridiculous players they let leave from their academy. They would cook
Bringing back all their academy guys would be a very smart maneuver, but idk how realistic that is.
Obviously, they're not going to actually do that. But if they just did what Bilbão and Sociedad do but for Paris? They'd still dog walk the league every year, probably do at least as well in CL and save a lot of money. I know they don't care about saving money but whatever
Moving Neymar would be a big step in the right direction if they can get Saudi money to get him gone.
Neymar's primary, and really only issue at PSG has been staying healthy. Despite the way many think of him, he was the one of the MNM who was consistently contributing defensively and pressing. Messi jogged around like he always does, and in the weird shoe-horned setup PSG was trying to fit both Neymar and Messi together, Mbappe was sort of stuck as the permanent counter option high up the pitch.
Oh I'd definitely agree but his age now and persistent injury issues for the money hes on it needs to move on but nobody will touch his current contract or wages. He was one of my favorites in that team he was one of the arrogant but so good he could pull it off when he was going off in that front three.
Now atleast PSG didn't give him the 100mil signing bonus last summer like they did for mbappe who now wants to leave
The transfer window is now officially open. So, just like the NFL legal tampering period and CFBs recruitment windows, only now will teams and players agents begin talking to each other regarding potential deals. They definitely have not already been doing that for several months.
Arsenal now rumored (rumoured?) to be interested in Havertz. Did not see this one coming!
Came out of nowhere today and then picked up a lot of steam when Ornstein confirmed. Don't really know where he plays for us tbh, but I think he is good. Feels like a bit of a luxury when we have some other big needs but I'm sure Mikel has a plan for him.
Count me out if the reported prices are true though. Unless it's 40-45m, I think the money could be better spent elsewhere
Agree. Is he better than Jesus? Martinelli? Not sure...maybe? Either way, it's not like we're hurting for your attacking talent. All depends on price tag, but I'd rather have Caicedo.
Seems like some people are speculating he could take Xhaka's spot? That lineup seems a little unhinged to me, but idk.
I'm trying to just not worry about it too much because it's likely the tactics will change anyway. When Arteta bought Zinchenko last summer, everyone thought he was going to play midfield or regular left back. No one really anticipated his unique role, and no one envisioned Xhaka thriving in his role either. Havertz is a good player and if Arteta wants him I think there's a reason.
However, if it means (no evidence to support yet) that we don't get Caicedo that will be disappointing for me.
Fab reporting that Spurs have agreed with Raya but the big hurdle was always going to be the negotiations with Brentford.
He also reported that Man U are out for Kane which is also not surprising with how much Spurs would want for him to go to a direct rival. I doubt he goes to Madrid now with the (maybe) likely move of Mbappe to Madrid.
Fascinating to see how Kane and Mbappe sagas play out. Only one club can seemingly afford either (and can they, after buying Bellingham?), both are out of contract next summer and neither seem to want to sign new deals with their current clubs. So really, Spurs and PSG need to move them on or risk losing out on a fortune. One of them is likely going to get screwed. As a Villa supporter, I'd prefer to see Spurs, a rival, take the hit, but from a general principles perspective, it'd be funnier to see PSG get screwed.
Also, it makes me love Jack Grealish even more for him signing a contract extension to make sure the club got a good fee if/when he left. And that he's celebrated the treble harder than anyone thought humanly possible.
Grealish is giving Ovechkin a run for his money.
Looks like Caicedo is trending toward Chelsea. Bayern interested for a minute and apparently Arsenal aren't interested anymore.
I don't really understand how Chelsea can buy anyone until they sell players. They're supposed to have to make big sales by June 30 or be in violation of FFP or some other financial rule. But what else is new
Really awesome read regarding arsenal's squad. Biggest discussion point imo is pointing to the idea that having 17 viable starters all competing for the spot in the XI is much better than having a squad of 22 with very clear "first choice/back up" delineation
It's a fantastic approach, and one where you don't have to have your fingers crossed hoping against injuries. Someone in the extra 6 (thats a solid player or possible starter at another club) can fill in here and there without having to fully rely on a backup.
Had on my list to read tomorrow but just read it. I like and agree with the principle, but I find it hard to believe a (reportedly) £60m signing on nearly 200k/wk isn't going to regularly be part of the starting 11. Maybe it's part of the evolution of the club, but we aren't City. I don't know that we can ever sustain that level of squad without players wanting more locked-in starter roles and thus high squad turnover. Maybe (hopefully) I'm wrong though.
I think also when you're competing in 4 comps and want to win all of them, the mindset of treating each match with near equal importance means the squad probably isn't upset to start most but not all of the games. It requires a TON of work on the training ground to develop the chemistry needed between players, the tactical awareness and flexibility, and the overall mentality needed to chop and change.
It's why you've seen players like grealish bought for 100m and take a whole season to bed in. It's why someone like cancelo who thinks he's owed a starting spot over rico lewis gets summarily shown the door. It's also why the joke about city having two
XIs is outdated -- it's just that their bench options in any single game are top class
Are arsenal there? Not yet but better to have more Obviously Good Enough players than fewer.
Yeah, that's fair. I want to see the price though, I'll feel better about it if it's closer to 40 than 60
Couple of interesting rumors today:
Ruben Neves, Thomas Partey, Kalidou Koulibaly, Hakim Ziyech, and Edouard Mendy are all reported targets for moves to Saudi Arabia. A £55m fee has been agreed with Wolves for Neves.
A lot of people have compared this to the Chinese Super League experiment from several years ago, but to me this is more of a threat. They seem to be targeting players who are Muslim (not all, but many) who are nearing the end of their top-level playing career. But landing a player like Neves is a big one for them. He's in his prime, and although it probably wasn't going to happen, there was talk of him moving to Barca. Doesn't seem like they'll run out of money anytime soon and they already seem to be getting bigger players than China ever did. I personally think it sucks, but it doesn't look like a flash in the pan at first glance.
All I can say is that they better take Nicolas Pepe
Where Balo gonna go
Busquets to join Messi in Miami. They got me, I'm gonna have to find a way to watch
Looks like Havertz to Arsenal is on for £65m. Did not expect that to be our first deal of the summer...
I'm still wary of that fee (even though it probably includes all add-ons), but I have warmed to the idea of the actual player. It's a gamble for sure though.
looks like it's 60m+5m, but to meet valuation of the 60m, the compromise was chelsea accepted arsenal's preferred payment installment structure. happened pretty quickly which is good. now on to Rice, Lavia, and potentially Timber for a dream window
That window, with realistically 75% of rumored outgoings, is a perfect window. Don't think Lavia is happening unless Partey leaves 🤞🏻
and hopefully he does, pretty shameful tbh
Edu has pretty much nailed it for the last two or three years, so I'm going to choose optimism here. Yikes, I'm nervous though.
it seems Arsenal is really restocking their....arsenal
via GIPHY
Newcastle has made their first big splash of the summer, signing Sandro Tonali from AC Milan for €70m. I have to say, it is very annoying how well Newcastle has managed have an unlimited supply of money. They keep making extremely smart and logical signings. I would really like for them to do dumb things like try to sign Neymar or spend 200m on Harry Kane, but they just won't.
Spurs seem to be closing in on signing the keeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli. Apparently he had a great season last year so he could be promising. Also for less than half of what Brentford seem to want for Raya. Raya is obviously a safer bet but I'm fine with Spurs not spending 40 million on him this summer.
It also looks like City has entered the race for Rice. It makes sense especially now that Gundogan is off to Barca and yet to be seen what happens with Bernardo this summer.
Seriously though, this was always going to happen. It doesn't benefit West Ham to sell him quickly without giving another team a chance to bid. He's not like Bernardo or Gundogan at all though, so I don't really see him replacing either of those players. This really seems to me like a) prevent closest challenging team from getting him and b) fixing the failed Kalvin Phillips experiment. The indications (link) are that Rice still prefers Arsenal.
great gugliely mugliely!
Tim Weah to Juventus looking advanced - €12m. Juventus is kind of a dumpster fire but as long as he doesn't play LB I guess it's fine.
Word is he'll be playing a Cuadrado-esque wing-back role, which is better, but maybe not ideal. As long as he's getting minutes, though.
Yeah, I think he'll do it well, I just think Juve in general is not in a good place. I saw that Leverkusen was interested in him, I think that would have been better. But it's not terrible.
Yeah, a pressure cooker like Juve is great when you're playing well (see Pulisic's closed doors COVID Chelsea run), but when you're not, it's tough! (See most of the rest of Pulisic's time at Chelsea)
Pepi headed to PSV, fee not reported yet. Great move for him, definitely has a good chance to seize the starting role. Hopefully they can hang on to Xavi Simons so he can have a top tier creator to feed him.
This lack of Declan Rice news is making me super nervous. Hoping City is too busy with Gvardiol 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
The "news " today seemed to be that City still haven't bid yet (even though Ornstein said they were expected to) and that City weren't going to bid until they were confident that Rice would agree to join them. So that, along with other reporting, definitely suggests that he only wants to go to Arsenal. I'm cautiously optimistic that this gets wrapped up in the next few days.
£70m+add ons in for Kane from Bayern. Don't think they will be enough to pet him from Levy and I don't think Kane will go there, but Bayern have already not big for a few targets this summer when they determined that they preferred other clubs. Perhaps them submitting an offer means this is different?
Saw it reported in euros by orny which means spurs even less likely to accept
You're right - some might even call that a derisory bid.
Ornstein, chance...GOAL!!!!
Andddd boom goes the dynamite! No matter what happens, I'm happy to see Arsenal put their back into it. If Declan Rice isn't a Gunner, it won't be for lack of ambition or resources. That being said, cmon West Ham; do the right thing.
Looks like they're unhappy with the payment structure and expect Man City to bid tomorrow. Honestly, this is crazy - I'd kind of rather just go for Caicedo if we have to go higher than this.
City dropping out of the race. Have to think the deal gets finalized soon, even if it probably won't be announced until July.
Payment structure is the hold up. Arsenal's first two bids had payments over 5-6 years. West Ham wants most of the payment now and the remainder within a year (need money now so we can spend it on his replacement as well as a couple of other players). Arsenal's 3rd bid reduced the timing to 3-4 years so we are getting closer to deal being agreed on. Rice's preference is to go to Arsenal and personal terms are nearly completed as well.
James Madison to Tottenham for 40 million is close to being Finalized
With this and the goalkeeper signings. Tottenham has used 57 million out of the 100 million Levy have gave Ange to use
Before outgoings. Rumors of winks to Leicester, lloris and sanchez moving on, possibly big Kane windfall
Read Bayern are coming back in with £80m
Good get. He was just about the only sign of life for LCFC last year. Like his game a lot, and the price is pretty good too
Mount to United confirmed - I have always rated Mount and I think he will do well there. I do wonder about Bruno and Mount together but we will see. Not a terrible price either, but that might be about it for United unless the sale goes through
If United find a great striker option to pair with Rashford, I think it wouldn't be crazy to fit Mount and Bruno together by going the box midfield route.
On paper the formation can be:
Rashford - Striker - Bruno
Mount - Midfielder
Casemiro
Shaw - Varane - Martinez - RB
but in actuality it's more of a 4-4-2, with Bruno dropping into an advanced Pivot with Mount, and the RCM dropping into a defensive pivot with Casemiro. Leaving Rashford as a LW/inside forward paired with a striker. It creates a little bit of a lopsided formation, but the box midfield has seen a popular resurgence in multiple different iterations over the last few years. This iteration would be very similar to how Barca setup this past season with Gavi often listed as a LW on paper in a 4-3-3, but in function split his time as a psuedo LW and a LCM in the advanced pivot in a box midfield. Dembele remained primarily a winger/inside forward in this setup like he would in 4-3-3, and Lewa played more like a central striker.
Yeah I think it can work, but they'll need more signings to do that. If the sale goes through and they can buy Kane or Osimhen then it will start to look good. But if the reported 100m transfer budget is accurate, that's not happening anytime soon.
Another way is if they played Martinez at FB and have him step into midfield like City and Arsenal do, but that doesn't work with their current personnel either. So, next season I can see it being a big problem.
Yep, the most common other box midfield version is exactly as you say inverting a fullback into the deeper pivot and switching from back 4 to back 3. I think the decision there depends heavily on how well you think your back line can seamlessly transition between a back 4 and back 3 without losing defensive cohesion, and/or are you trying to fit an extra wide player into the formation up top, or are you trying to fit a 10 type player into your midfield. At the moment, given Sancho and Antony haven't been undroppable type wide forwards (and Antony might have legal issues), and Bruno has been incredible for years, at a glance it seems wiser to go with the two up top situation and give Bruno a free role in the box.
Sale isnt going through until after August if it even does at this point. If they haven't entered exclusive negotiations yet that will rule out a quick change. See the commanders it still took months after entering into exclusivity to make the sale happen and it'll be no different with united unfortunately.
I'm not mounts biggest fan but he's a definite upgrade to Fred and mctominay and with a proper coach could excel as an 8 or 3ven a wide player if both Antony and Sancho continue to underperform.
For the striker I still think they add one Hojlmund looks most likely from atalanta. If they could replace de gea with onana that wouldn't be a bad window considering the glazers and the sale situation. Not enough to fight for top honors but hopefully enough to remain in the champs league until the ownership garbage is resolved.
Højlund is a good prospect, but United was being quoted like 70m. A) he's not worth that at all right now - still very raw and b) he seems like a much different profile than Ten Hag would prefer, assuming he is intending to loosely copy the Pep model, which would make sense since he's from his coaching tree.
Reality for United is they will likely be limited to two impact signings so they better get them right but even if they do, fans shouldn't expect every issue to be fixed, as it's very clear that you understand.
Apparently, LFC will trigger RB Leipzig's release clause of £60m for Dominik Szoboszlai...didn't see this one coming as we don't really need attacking midfielders. Juicy, though.
In Klopp we trust.
Blindside the hell out of me too. I've read though that he's pretty well-rounded and can play in various roles on the pitch. Notably the right side (Elliott/Henderson role), played some winger, and played some 9 with RB. Typical Klopp signing, get a well rounded guy in who you can shape after you see strengths/weaknesses at each position.
Good price too for a 22 year old Hungarian international.
If they can get him to be better as a more well rounded midfielder he will be legit. Definitely more attacking in his time in Germany and has great control and ability to break presses and can be silky going forward. Solid pickup for the price atleast.
Looks like Brenden Aaronson is off to Union Berlin on loan. I think a season in the Championship would have been good for his development, but you can't argue with a move to a Champions League Bundesliga team. He's a perfect fit for the Bundesliga, although I don't know about Union specifically.
I think he'll do well there. They're big on defending and counterattacking, so if they play him on the wing, he's gonna run his ass off and he's gonna have more defensive duties than at previous clubs.
Harry Winks to Leicester is official. I saw 10 million pounds as the fee. Also seeing that Spurs will sign Manor Solomon on a free transfer. Micky Van de Ven to Spurs is also gaining some traction.
Medical is scheduled for Friday and the deal should be finalized over the weekend.
I hate seeing him leave, especially to a London rival but at least this didn't drag on all summer. We need these proceeds to fund our targets this summer.
So I get not wanting him to leave of course. But (trying not to sound condescending), do West Ham actually see Arsenal as a rival? I mean I know London, but they're historically on different levels. My understanding was that Spurs and Chelsea who, excepting recent history, have been more equal in terms of success were the main rivals. I was really surprised to see all the beef from WHU fans toward Arsenal in this whole saga.
It should be telling that the two biggest movies about football hooliganism, The Firm and Green Street Hooligans, are about West Ham supporters.
It's no where near as big as Tottenham and Chelsea but it seems like it has been growing over the past few years. Moving to the London Stadium was done to help West Ham raise their profile within the league and also in London. The club wanted to compete in Europe and challenge to become as big as the other three big London clubs.
The blacklash of Rice going to Arsenal is that most fans would rather see him go to Man City as that gets him out of London and gives him a better chance of winning titles. Rice has said that his aspirations were to compete for Premier League and Champions League titles which is going to be a lot easier and more likely to happen at Man City based on the past few years.
Just my opinion, but players who want to go somewhere where it's easy to win titles is kind of a weak mentality.
Rice is already a fan favorite for turning down Pep. If he helps us win a title, he'll be a legend.
Arsenal in full agreement with Ajax for Timber per Orny, €40m+5m deal. Medical to be scheduled and personal terms finalized
I don't know much about this guy. Is he going to be back up/depth option or are we really thinking he's going to push Saliba for significant minutes? He's right footed, correct?
The buzz is that he's going to play RB for us (has played there before). My thinking is that he's going to be right-sided Zinchenko. Don't think they'll play at the same time, but the ability to have an inverting fullback from either side will make it much harder to prepare for.
He's an excellent passer and good carrier. Defensively, it remains to be seen if he can hack it at PL level, but I'm encouraged by the fact that he's an actual defender by trade. Plus Martinez was very good this season coming from Ajax as well, and I believe Timber was Ajax's player of the season in 21/22, after which Martinez went to United.
Don't think he'll be starting right away. Needs time to learn the role and no reason to rush.
Fab confirms Pulisic to AC Milan is done. Not sure of final fee, but info yesterday was something like 20m. I've also read that the manager, Pioli, plans to play him as a #10. I won't pretend to know much about Milan, but I think it's just good that he's finally going somewhere where they have a plan for him, or at least appear to. I think only time will tell, but staying with a CL level club and getting to be a key part of a team fighting for trophies is a positive move. Anywhere but Chelsea, honestly. Hope he balls out.
Excellent! He'll learn from the legend: Divock Origi
I don't care if he plays as a 10 or RW at Milan (definitely won't play LW as long as they keep Leao). He needs to be playing week in and week out. That's more important to me than anything else. It's a bonus to get to watch him playing for such a historic club with a cool kit to boot.
Yeah I think he'll be fine as a 10, although I think he's better at LW. Heard they want to sign Chukwueze from Villarreal, so that should have them set at RW. They definitely wouldn't have spent 20m if they weren't planning to start him, so that's a good sign at least.
Would be fun if they can get Musah too and maybe Balogun.
Liverpool looking at replacing almost their entire midfield depth chart in one summer is...probably not great.
Henderson would be a loss but has already been managed by the purchases of MacAllister and Szoboszlai. I think selling Fabinho would be a huge mistake for them, even if they replace him with Lavia. Lavia is very good, but I don't think he's ready to hold down Liverpool's midfield by himself and he doesn't have the physical presence of Fabinho.
Connective tissue is important, i also think selling fabinho would be a mistake.
Henderson leaving feels like Xhaka for Arsenal. It's clear you can upgrade his spot in the 11 but he's not really someone you want to lose from the team altogether.
agreed -- declining influence on the pitch, incredibly influential in the squad. Xhaka at least still has his legs tho
It would be so tough to see Jordan leave. I have a soft spot for the Cap. I would hate to see Fab leave too. I think getting Lavia and having a young Stefan Bajcetic would be quite the inexperience at the DM position. I prefer to see Thiago leave, if any of our midfielders go, because I think we could get a pretty penny for him still at his advanced age. I like the direction the team is headed, but like GGC, you need some connective tissue to stay around, and no one pushes the boys like the Cap. Losing our captain and vice-captain in the same summer would be quite unfortunate.
Xhaka's a bit younger than the others but yeah. I mean he just had his best season. I'm happy with the fee we ended up getting but I would have been more than happy to keep him around. I think he'll be one of the best midfielders in Germany
And deccers is finally final!
Can't wait to watch him on the US your. Wish the tickets weren't ungodly expensive...
So happy to see our club making the commitment to try and be great! Do you all think our transfers in are done for this window? Presumably, lots of business on outgoings to attend to
I've heard they're not done yet, but I think it will depend on which players leave. Like if Tierney, Cedric, Holding go I think we might sign another defender. If Partey goes, a midfielder. One of Nketiah/Balogun is almost certain to go but maybe if they both go we buy another attacker.
Unfortunately, a lot of the outgoings will probably have to wait a bit for clubs to miss on their first/second options. Only Balogun has anyone really interested in him at this point in time.
Spurs are on the verge of completing the signing of 18 year old CB Ashley Phillips from Blackburn. Seems to be a promising one for the future and indications are that his signing doesn't change the plans for at least one more (and hopefully two) new CB this window.
What y'all really need is HARRY MAGUIREEEEE
Suppressing the urge to downvote!
Mahrez to Al-Ahli (Saudi Arabia) is official. Will be really interesting to see how City navigates the rest of this window. Already have to replace two key starters and there's talk of Bernardo leaving as well.
And now they've got Gvardiol, but that doesn't really feel like it was needed...
Now the Saudis just need to make a play for KdB and Haaland. A boy can dream!
Missed opportunity for the Riyadh based Saudi clubs to let Riyad Mahrez end up in Jeddah.
Wait mahrez is playing on a planet in the Star wars universe now? When did the Saudis buy Disney or Lucas film?
I think they will be fine. Would be stunned if they let Silva go with mahrez out the door now and with gvardiol coming in they will be fine. Halaand will be better etc probably more stones in midfield and foden will be better as well
Well, and I can't believe I'm saying this but, they don't really have any wing depth? Unless I'm an idiot and I'm forgetting someone. Grealish at LW and Foden at RW (or Bernardo but then you have to fill CM). And then...Alvarez could play there I guess? Cole Palmer? I really feel like they need to buy someone and the season starts in less than a month. I'm sure Pep will figure something out and make me look like an idiot, but at this point I don't see how they have enough attacking depth to compete on all 4 fronts like last season. There's still time and I'm sure they will get it done, but they need more wide attackers.
they already had a pretty small squad -- seeing gundogan, mahrez, and potentially walker, laporte, cancelo out with only kovacic + gvardiol incoming doesn't make sense to me. Unless Rico Lewis and Cole Palmer are really ready for a step up and Kalvin Phillips is ready to contribute regularly
esp with KDB recovering from surgery early on
Sort of DIRECTLY related, but finally mostly checked off a bucket list item yesterday going to the double header in Philly. While not a game in St. James Park, we were completely surrounded by proppa Geordies!
On the transfer front, got to see Tonali in the first half (and chasing for the first two goals.) Gotta work out the kinks with him and Bruno in the lineup at the same time. Similar thoughts, similar approaches, and can't leave the CB's on an island without a 6 in the Prem.
And the surprise of the night was when they brought on Harvey Barnes. He got 20 minutes or so of good time and he had some great chemistry with Anthony Gordon.
Looks like Al Hilal have tabled a 300 million Euro bid for Kylian Mbappe that PSG have accepted. This would have a knock on effect with other players like Salah if he does agree personal terms and move to Saudi Arabia. One to watch.
While I hope it doesn't happen, I think this would be a unique deal in that it's a one year deal and then he goes to Madrid for free. Not many (any?) other players will be in his situation.
Salah is a different situation (nearing the end of his top-level career). Still don't think many players in their prime at the elite level will be tempted by these offers.
What it will do is turn the heads of top players at mid level premier league and even some upper echelon European teams who can see that they're not going to make it at the top level (Ruben Neves, Mitrovic). It will only increase the division between the elite clubs and the rest because they're the only teams that can offer a better competitive/financial combo. But even with Saudi money, I'm struggling to see how this level of spending is sustainable.
I'm so tired of the Mbappe sagas, I just don't want to hear about it. I hope he does go to the Saudi League, they deserve each other.
Samuel Chukwueze to AC Milan now confirmed. They are building a fun team over there...definitely going to be watching this season with Pulisic and possibly Musah involved. Excellent job by them reinvesting the Sandro Tonali money.
As a Tottenham fan at this point if Bayern next offer for Kane is around 100 million pounds I would take it. Would be enough Money for a solid replacement and probably gives enough money for one of the CB targets we are looking at
They should definitely do it, but the problem will be that everyone will quote you ridiculous prices when they know how much money you have. West Ham have been quoted 40m for Conor Gallagher
I know 😂
Looks like Spurs and Spartak Moscow agreed a fee for Davinson Sanchez. Hoping some other players can get cleared out as well as bringing a new defender or two in. Hope the Harry Kane situation gets cleared up sooner rather than later. I'm feeling more okay about him going as time ticks on as long as Bayern or whoever puts in a better bid for him. Ange seems to be as good a coach as any to handle a long overdue rebuild.
Yeah I'll take the 15 million for Davidson. Next person to unload imo should be Tanguy. To bad we gonna offload for probably 25 million when we bought him for 60 million 😂😭
I think I'd like to see how he does under Ange before selling him probably. This team is going to play a lot differently than most of the other Spurs teams he's been on.
Musah to AC Milan is nearly done and apparently they're still in for Balogun as well...
Guess I'm going to have to get a Paramount+ subscription
Højlund to United for €75+10 is...steep. He's clearly a really talented player but I feel he still has a lot to improve. That's an insane price for his production so far. I guess if it works out no one will care but whew...
Call me crazy but I'd prefer we go the youth route then overpaying for a kane or older guy past 30 with injury issues. Too many old strikers lately and a young guy who ten Haag identifies I'm good with. Price tag is well over but that's the united tax and inability to do deals for players with clauses and cheap tags. Will be fascinating to watch but if he can get in the 15 goal contributions in the PL it may be worth it if he develops.
Yeah like I said if it works out no one will care. Striker market is very scarce this summer. I get it, but he's really unproven. 9 goals in Italy plus a season in Austria and Denmark. I dunno. Kane wouldn't be that much more and you know you're getting 20 goals minimum.
Yep money is dumb these days look at the money Chelsea got for mount and havertz combined not to mention the money Saudi is paying guys over 30. Some teams are good at deals like nkuku for his price, McAllister to Liverpool some teams do it well some like man united suck at it big time.
My issue is kanes only got a year left and is about to be 30 and yes he would be better for the next year or two but it's money you won't see in return and that's why united can't go for a osimehn or someone premium. They've spent awfully on older guys for too long who have no resale value and is why FFP is an issue this summer when players who could've really been big signings had to be passed to better other positions like the GK, which became an issue due to the bundling of the de gea deal.
I'm excited for a younger guy maybe it's naive and dumb but oh well. It's the best united could have hoped for this summer after spending a lot on 2 other players, onana who I'm excited by and glad to get but mount is a big fat question mark to me.
The only "good deals" these days are release clauses (like nkunku). Or if you have a club that understands where they fall in the hierarchy and are ok selling, like Ajax.
Rumors of a Mbappe loan move to 'Pool 😱
🥱 I'll believe it when I see it. Give me a DM and left footed CB 1st and then we can talk...
Looks like Tottenham has completed a transfer from Argentina. Alejo Veliz hes a 19 year striker from Rosario Central. Has scored 11 league goals and also scored 3 goals at the U20 world cup. Deal is around 15 million
Also finally in Advance Talk for one of the CB targets Micky van de Ven
Seems like Bayern has made a final bid for Kane of about 100 million pounds after add ons. Regardless of whether that's accepted or not, I'll be glad to see this saga over after today (hopefully).
Well if Levy does accept I wonder who will be the replacement
My guess is Richarlison would start and we'd just go after some young talent.
Maybe Gift Orban from Gent? With Veliz as 3rd string. Parrott and Scarlett aren't getting any younger/better
Yeah I've seen the chatter about Orban. That would be a good get but I still think at least in the short term Richarlison would be the starter.
Oh 100% agree. Was thinking as Orban as #2 with Richy moving up to #1
I think that's possible. Gotta move quick for Orban before he scores more hat tricks and continues to raise his value lol.
Here we go for Van de Ven. 50 million to Tottenham
Being reported that Spurs rejected the newest bid for Harry Kane. I assume that means he stays now. Excited to see how he does under Ange, especially after scoring four goals yesterday.
Looks like Bayern and Spurs have now agreed a fee for Harry Kane but it's up to him whether he wants to actually move. Really weird situation and the rumors now are that he's got cold feet about the move. I guess we'll find out soon enough one way or the other.
I have the sinking feeling he'll stay and leave on a free after the season, to another PL team with a huge bonus. Accusations of tampering will fly, but any big 6 team can pay a fine without blinking an eye imo.
I think him leaving next season is probably the best thing for him. Get a huge signing bonus somewhere in the PL and not have to uproot his family suddenly this summer. Obviously I'd love for him to stay this summer and end up signing a new deal.
Sounds like Kane to Bayern is almost complete, should be done tomorrow.
Good on Kane getting out of that dumpster fire of a club. He gave Spurs his best years, they let him down consistently with not shaving dead weight off the squad and Levy playing power games.
Orn bomb with liverpool bidding £110m for Caicedo
Seems like the fee for Kane is 100 million pounds and could get up to about 120 million. Probably about as good as could be asked for. Spurs get a good fee and he's not joining any direct rivals for a while. Excited for the future with Ange and I think the team will be fun to watch with or without Kane.
Let's see what Son can do by himself.
I think the change in style for the team will help him out. It'll probably help all of our attackers. Scoring goals shouldn't really be a problem with or without Harry.
Agreed, but he was a fantastic set up guy too, drawing attention away to serve to Harry in the middle. With the new offsides enforcement or whatever the crap is this year, I see him abusing (taking advantage of...) it and having a lot of one-on-ones with the keep. I can see him with more goals and fewer helpers.
I think James Maddison is going to be huge for this team. Lots of assists incoming for him.
Personally, I think Son's 2023-2024 will more closely resemble last season than the golden boot 2021-2022 season. Main reason is style; when Son was at his best, it was a result of Kane dropping in as a #9 and Son playing the furthest ahead as a left forward. Between Kane's world class passing and Son's speed, they terrorized defenders on the break. In Ange's system, Son will be pushed towards the sideline more as a left winger. While I'm sure Maddison will find ways to play Son through on the break, Son will be further from goal while we're in possession as the inverted fullbacks occupy the inside position. As we've seen over the years, Son is simply not effective in quick passing situations.
Being reported that Spurs are close to signing Ansu Fati on loan. Feels like this came out of left field and I'm curious what that means for the front three of the team.
