Anybody watching the game this morning? We are tied 2-2 with Russia in the 3rd period with 7 minutes to go. We beat Slovakia 7-1 on Thursday. We will have Slovenia tomorrow morning to wrap up preliminary play.

It was actually a pretty awesome game all around, and a fantastic shootout.
There was a point where USA could have changed the final half of the game where the shot was set up perfectly to go 3-1 USA but the puck got put up over the net because the player's stick picked up too much of the bottom of the puck.
Then that Russia score that got called no score in the 3rd period...whew.
Loved seeing The Big Pavelski get an Olympic goal. He's having a good year.
Got up at 7am on Thursday and today to watch. Watched Miracle last night to get ready to watch freedom beat communism. That was one of the best games I've ever seen. Quick knocking the net off to disallow the go-ahead goal was awesome. So was Alexander Radulov committing the dumbest possible penalties while our power play was on fire, maybe the Predators told him to leave. And then TJ Oshie vs. Kovie/Datsuyk in the shootout.
At the end of the first period, we lead Slovenia 2-0.
Glad to see people watching hockey. Really is a great game.

We lead 4-0 over Slovenia at the end of the 2nd. Also, Slovakia is putting up a fight against Russia. The score is 0-0 at the end of the 2nd. Slovakia is the only team in our group that hasn't won a prelim game.
Team USA wins 5-1! Slovenia got a late goal with 17 seconds left. And for Russia and Slovakia, they are heading to overtime.
A natural hat trick too. It was great to see Russia go to overtime because now we avoid them until the final. All that's left is rooting for Canada-Finland to go to overtime so we can take the 2 seed.
Yeah it was! There's a very good chance that'll happen because both of those teams are very solid.
Canada won 2-1 in overtime. We should get the second seed now.
And this was a game that started at 7:30am. Imagine if it started at a reasonable time.

Here's the thing about US vs Canada tomorrow...
The US team is built for the bigger ice of international play. The Canadian team is built for NHL sized rinks. If this game was being played in N.America, I'd have Canada winning this game, but its being played in Europe. That bigger rink is a BIG advantage to the US team that nobody is really talking about. The Canadians are a bigger, more physical team than the US squad, but the US counters that with speed... and a lot of it. We should be able to use the bigger ice to get around their defense to get plenty of scoring opportunities. They might have the better defenders, but the US plays a better defensive game. And I'll take Quick over Price every day and twice on Sunday.
We very well still could lose, because the Canadian team has Crosby, and that guy can will a team to wins... but I just have a feeling about this US squad. The entire US Hockey organization has had a Canadian rematch circled on the calendar since 2010. I liken this to the 2003 VT home game against Miami. The US team has been looking forward to this game for a looooooooooong time.

I feel sorry for the Russian players and their families. Considering the major emphasis from Putin to win a medal for their hockey team...to be eliminated...and have the remarks Putin made after the loss to the US about the team...whew. Heavy.

Not only that, but I feel REALLY bad for the elite NHL talent on that team in Ovi, Datsyuk, Malkin, Semin, Bobrovsky, etc. There was HEAVY political pressure put on that team to use the opportunity to showcase the KHL to prove that its on par with the NHL. So much so that the NHL players supposedly got in the faces of the coaches and managers of the team to cut out the KHL emphasis if they wanted to win. It obviously didn't win.
Sorry, you don't go into an elimination game with a KHL goalie when you have the reigning Vezina winner on your roster. You don't go KHL-heavy on defense when you have plenty of worthy talent in the premier league in the world.
And the worst part. The NHL players are going to be the ones blamed and death threatened for this debacle.
KHL goalie? Varlamov is on the Avalanche, still should have started Bob though. I think Radulov should be the most crucified. I know he was really good in the last 2 games for them, but if he doesn't commit some of the dumbest penalties I've ever seen against us they probably win that game and are the ones playing Canada tomorrow. But they just weren't a very good team, the stereotypical undisciplined style of Russian players showed up.
I agree with the KHL sentiment. You have to remember that they originally left Semin off the roster for a KHL player. Granted, Semin has not had the best year so far - but he is markedly better than the KHL players.

Talent alone will allow the US to get into the medal round every time in the Olympics until other countries start taking women's sports seriously. Thats just a fact of life.
There is a HUGE MASSIVE PROBLEM when you have a team up 2 goals with less than 4 minutes to go and you lose the game. Absolutely no excuses for a chokejob like that. Canada owns them in the medal rounds. Absolutely owns them and eats their lunch. Its pathetic. Whatever we're doing, its not working in the Olympics. You don't go into a defensive shell for the last 10 minutes of the game when your identity is a high pressure team that stretches the ice to keep the opponent honest. The US took their foot off the gas way too early and it cost them gold. That blame lies squarely on the coaching staff for the adjustment.

I think we're gonna win. Canada hasn't been playing too well, and with Crosby's line struggling they could be in trouble. The great thing about the US team is that it's basically 4 energy lines with offensive skill. They score a lot of ugly goals, but they have the talent to score pretty ones too (see: Kane's pass to Pavelski against Russia). Our special teams have been awesome too. I think the biggest advantage is Quick over Price and that'll be the difference. US-4 Canada-2
Good synopsis of it and I agree! Canada in my opinion, too, is that they have been struggling to a certain point. If we play like we have I think we will be fine but I'm afraid we are due for an off performance. Hope I am wrong though. We are playing hungry and lights out!

Offensively, it was pathetic. They couldn't generate a thing against them today. The chances they did get in the third were all very weak. Yes, Canada is a better team, but they're not THAT much better. Quick and the defense did as much as they could to win. The offense barely showed up

It was a frustrating game to watch. We couldn't get any zone time, but we didn't even try to get any which was so frustrating. It was one and done ever possession. Price might have been screened on 1 or 2 shots the whole game. I'm still proud of the effort, but either the game plan was bad or the execution was bad.
Yeah...our Canadian branch is gloating right now. We should have IT shutdown their network for the rest of the day.
