uh..... no. athletic directors don't vote. presidents do. nobody was overridden.

Yes, it's not an override per se, but the presidents should be strongly heeding the advice from athletic directors for athletic decisions.

Semantics.

sorry, you lost me. what athletics decision?

this is about money.

I dont think it matters much now. Whit had to make the case for what was best for the athletic department, Sands had to do what he felt was best for the university. If the AAU comment is true I'm shocked/not shocked. I dont see why adding 2 more AAU schools to get favor is going to make a difference when there were already 6 AAU members in the ACC. I have zero clue what the criteria for acceptance is, but i'm missing the logic.

Maybe he made a quid pro quo arrangement with Calford regarding AAU admittance. A yes vote on ACC membership for two yes votes on AAU membership. /shrug

The logic is rooted in quid pro quo. But throwing calford a lifeline, Sands believes he's doing them enough of a favor to get their votes to have VT added to the AAU. It's a pretty foolish strategy. I'd be shocked (actually shocked) if VT gets AAU status before 2036.

Onward and upward

I understand. My question, to be more specific, was wtf is Pitt, Duke, Miami, ND (if you count them), GT, and UVA doing NOT vouching for us?

Edit: AND UNC... arses

GT and Miami hate US. UVA wants to be the only AAU school in Virginia, it gives them something they have over us.

Just ONE MORE reason to correct that.

They may also be vouching for us, but the addition of two more "quid pro quo" schools wouldn't hurt our chances.

As of right now, Tech would need 54 votes to be admitted to the AAU.

Virginia Tech could theoretically lean on the 67 ABET accredited universities for admission. Speaking of, Virginia Tech would become the 18th member to be A.) Accredited by ABET, B.) Accredited by NIFA, and C.) Accredited by LCME.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Wow, this really sticks out to me. Is this the big motivation for Sands? This certainly would put VT in a very exclusive group of universities.

Not sure why, but my overextended gut is screaming at this as being the "handwriting on the wall" end game for Sands.

Yea, my spidey sense says Tim Thomas doesn't have any inside information that he "heard." He's writing out his ass to drive clicks to his website.

His statement also displays a fundamental lack of understanding how the process works.

Was a cheap shot, that's all. Says more about the writer than anything else.

Sands has three degrees from Cal. Of course he would vote for this move.

Second, if he's always going to vote what's best academically for VT, then would he vote yes if we got invited to the SEC?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."
