We've finally made it y'all. Game week is upon us. Here's some of what Pry talked about in preparation for ODU and the season.
- Felt like we had a good camp and got what the staff wanted out of the competition in practice. Staff knows our strengths and our weaknesses.
- Talks about the challenges of prepping for game one, especially in portal era. 58 new players and a new OC for ODU. Have to do your homework and be ready for adjustments in the game.
- "I've found that our fanbases really enjoy it." In reference to this matchup. News to me.
- Pennix in the 2 deep at nickle. 5 total freshman on the depth chart in the perimeter.
- Burgos beat Nelson for starting DE. Pry feels that APR and Burgos give us the best chance at negative yardage plays.
- More depth chart talk here
- Mottos for the season: focus and effort
- focus: be present, live in the next 6 seconds
- effort: when you play harder than your opponent that goes a long way to a victory
- Committed a lot of effort into run game this off-season. Pry feels the front has a better identity this season and that the RB room is healthy and much improved from last year.
- Love starting FG kicker. Lowe may be available for extra long yardage FGs
- lol at "We don't have an Ali Jenkins on this team". Definitely going to use some Leroy Jenkins memes this year.
- Pretty decent mic today. Much better orange polo from Pry, no more horrible dreamsicle orange.
Injuries:
- Gallo questionable
- Tuten 100%

Did someone call him Ali Jenkins?
One of the reporters over zoom. To be fair to him it was hard to hear his question at first, so I think he just got a little tongue-tied after Pry asked for clarification.
has to be sarcasm, no?
I mean I guess you have to say something positive. Lol.
I read Rahne's presser transcript and he just like Pry acknowledged that its a shame we have to play each other regularly in a lot of regards. Could be much collaboration between the programs given their Penn St. ties.
I've never met a VT fan that likes anything about the ODU or Liberty series
I think ODU would be fun once every 5-10 years, not every year for 15.
Liberty can get bent.
or the ECU series, for that matter
that series turned quick when they started whipping our ass regularly yes
Yeah typically I don't like when schedule teams from a lesser conference that don't have a history of being good and then they beat us multiple times so let me check my notes....that eliminates pretty much every g5 team and a handful of fcs teams.
God I hate virginia tech football.
ECU had a history of giving P5 teams the business in the 90s so its not just us with them.
Ron Cherry approves of this comment.
Meh.. the deal with ECU is that one year Terry Williams- a huge DT with a 1.9 GPA and 500 SAT in HS dominated our entire offense. We literally could not do anything on offense- nothing. OK - wow he is Warren Sapp revisited??? Nah, CUSA teams 2 weeks later out up 60 points on ECU,etc. La Tech had no issues blocking him. I mean- fuck me. Really VT? We are going to lose multiple times to 6-6 ECU teams? For fuck sake man.
It's more style of play than anything else imo. Terry Williams was a house and our offense was booty cheeks. Lefty was also determined to run Marshawn Williams or JC Coleman up the middle ~60% of the time.
Carolina, the fighting Fedoras at the time, put up 41 against them (in a 30 point loss) with that weird air raid. And most embarrassingly they gave up 54 to a team coached by a sitting US Senator. Otherwise that defense held up pretty well throughout the season
agree- typical VT- let ECU's absolute shit defense dominate you and kill your season.
This statement brought to you by John Ballein. LOL. /s
That is a tough question for Pry to answer without throwing his boss under the bus. It was a bone headed move to schedule these guys. Everybody knows it. Both coaches hate it. It just shows how completely out of touch with the reality of P5 football our athletic department has been over the last 15 years.
But, I think one of the reporters, maybe Andy, said something to Whit about canceling this series and his response was basically that we have to beat them a couple times first. Not wrong, but man was that tough to hear.
The bone head root cause is the laughable logic that putting the team on a bus and driving them to Norfolk to play in front of 25 K fans on CBS Sportsnet against a sunbelt opponent in ANY WAY ON GODS GREEN EARTH helps "recruiting". Whomever thought that has zero clue. zero. You NEVER put yourself in a lose/lose proposition and think it might help your recruiting. Laughable. A total joke. Chris Cole is not more interested in VT if you beat ODU in norfolk by 75 points. no chance. But if you lose to the 11th place sunbelt team and can't tackle them- welp that shows how small time your program is. on TV and in the stands for everyone to see. In terms of playing in the 757 "hotbed" helping recruiting as opposed to a stadium 3x bigger 4 hours away, well I can't help you if you can't see how stupid that is. This series is a farce. They will beat us again. Bank on that.
Pretty interesting point - obviously in game adjustments have always been super important, but are they even more important in the Transfer Portal era?
Thanks for the summary, looking forward to watching the whole thing.
I think in game adjustments are just as important as they always were. What's changed is how much goes into game prep and film break down. Now you have to watch a few different team's footage to get a feel for transfers and in ODUs case the new OC. I think this also works itself out by the midway point in the season, but it definitely makes the first few games more challenging.
I watched the Louisville day on ACC Network- they brought in some big time transfers. Literally changes the complexion of their team in one off season. If you are a net portal "winner" that's a good thing.
Is it Saturday yet?
really hate that you can never hear the questions
= WIN (What's Important Now!)
Yep, Pry has the lineage we thought he had.....
Lol, hell yes.
Pry is sounding pretty excited for Saturday like the rest of us.
HELL YES!! Go Hokies
I like listening to Pry talk.
Are we ready to run through a brick wall headfirst for Coach Pry yet?
The dry fitted brick wall comes after winning the ACC championship.
By "dry fitted" I assume you are referring to 'no mortar'.
Yup. Work helmet will also be worn.
We need to level up before we can open the wall....
I was on the fence about adding the post game pressers this season. They became pretty difficult to watch last year, but now I'm riding high on a win and decided what the hell.
Just listened to it. What's most refreshing to me is Coach Pry does not engage in "Coach Speak".
I loved his opening remarks. This guy knows how to talk the talk. And for this one particular game, he walked the walk. Here's to Pry taking more walks.
Thanks for linking. Nice listen to start the day.
Extremely impressed with his opening remarks. This guy understands the importance of relationships and puts the work in toward that end.
I need to keep his comments on not getting too high or too low fresh in my mind this season.
Maybe one post for all pressers for a given week? Or these could be their own pressers.
I know nothing about X's and O's, and I could tell you this
I've done it just about everyway.
My reasoning behind doing the Tuesday presser as the post and then adding any post practice stuff and the post game as comments is so it'll alert people that something has been added. It looks cleaner with all of the content in the main post, but then it's doesn't get bumped in the tracker. I'm also not committing to every post practice or media engagement, I don't have that kinda time during the week.
I'm open to organizing and posting it however people would like though. I want it to be informative, but not annoying.
well I appreciate the time you put into these so any format is great
Thank you. I'm still open to suggestions, so if you or any other TKPer has any please share them.
Yikes... I know it's game 1, but damn, that run game was brutal. I know ODU plays an odd front, but still.
Yeah run blocking up front was abysmal. We are absolutely going to need to improve that as we face better competition. Tuten runs hard but imagine what he can do if the line creates a few running lanes for him rather than constantly being met at or behind the line and having to grind tough yards out of nothing.
I remember Beamer saying that the most improvement in a team happens between game one and game two. Here's hoping we look a lot more refined against Purdue
