OT: Chip Kelly "I hope you're selling lots of comercials" in ESPN interview

Link to article

I am glad people in "power" are starting to vocalize what the rest of us are thinking. The games on ESPN/FOX/CBS that I watched today were so chopped up by comercials that I was losing interest.

Fornelli was complaining about it as well. Less football and more commercials, what a great way to ruin an incredible sport.

Have to respect how they are diversifying the ways in which they are ruining the game though.

"Official timeout"'- what a great way to kill momentum and quiet a raucous crowd! And still make the game experience last 3.5 hours!

In regards to "lots of commercials"...
Did anyone else feel like they only had 6-7 total commercials for ACCN last night? If there's gonna be that many breaks why are we only seeing the same ads over and over...

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

Only companies that were willing to spend money on ads for the ACCN....surprised they had as many as they did.

My only surprise was they didn't go to full commercials for every targeting. Could have doubled their money.

We're there really no spurtle commercials?

None, nor a tingle Tac (insert product name) ... and I was paying pretty close attention. I was actually surprised by the quality of some of the commercials. I was starting to think the ACCN had really stepped up their commercial game, but then it came crashing down at some point in the broadcast and I forget what regional junk they were hawking.

It was amazing watching the commercial countdown board in the stadium last night when it said 255 several times. Used to be 120 and get back to ball.

shit there was a couple 302s in there

What's the commercial countdown board? I haven't been to a game since 2017... is this new?

Yup, instead of the red (or green, or whatever color) glove guy stepping out on the field at the 20 during commercial breaks, they literally have a board (think soccer extra time board on a stick) that cou ts down the remaining time in the break so everyone knows the deal. I saw a few 255 (seconds) and as stated above a couple of 302's....over 4 minutes EACH.

Oh the guy still has his red shirt- we just now know how long we have to sit and rest-I it down as soon as I see him leaving the sideline. If we HAVE to have so many at least I know how long; now as I mentioned in another thread- if only the folks running the music and video board pay attention, they can time things better...

One of my favorite memories as a young kid, and something that continued throughout our successful run as a program, was my dad getting fired up ready for play to resume and yelling "Get off the field, red man!"

I'm convinced that when we used to sit in section 20, the "red man" actually heard him from time to time and would walk off the field in a bit of a hurry. Ha.

That is awesome.

We didn't have tv timeouts when I was a young kid...

We had 5 less plays in the game, two on the VT offense and 3 special teams plays from last years game. I don't have official game time for last year, but even with the elevator issue it felt like this year's took way longer.

It was well past 1120 when we left with a few minutes to ho in the game. It took a bit to do the deed.

Well ok then. Good on ya

Targeting reviews had to have added a half hour. Also felt like halftime was extended longer than normal.

Yeah, there were several....ugh. and halftime did seem longer than usual.

For those following at home:

Again a reminder is this isn't total plays it is only offensive (or defensive) plays. VT had 73 offensive plays vs ODU and 68 defensive plays. So it's really like 6+ fewer plays a game for 3 fewer minutes.

I think underneath that they will find more dead time - aka if the games are lasting the same amount of time in 4-8 fewer plays, those plays are replaced with targeting reviews and other momentum killing reviews.

With 5 minutes left in the 1st Q we had to pause the game for about an hour.
Returned to the game and fast forwarded through commercials and 1/2 time. We were caught up at the end of the game.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Holy F. That's crazy. So now it's no longer watching a college football game with some commercials to now watching a college commercial game with some football.

We've all talked/read the comments about how college football is being "wrecked" with super conference realignment, TV deals, NIL lucy goosee, but to further do so in the name of TV ad revenue being cloaked/pitched as rule changes to shorten the game for the players and fans sake takes the cake.

Last year, Hokie games averaged 141.45 plays per game, counting FG and P snaps. The two team ran 151 plays on Saturday.

These only include snaps where punts were returned

Last game shouldn't be used as a standard. Their hurry up offense added plays to the game.

Definitely not against last years stats when many games were out of reach in the second half and eating the clock was a big part of getting to the end. No need to run more plays at that point.

I'm not using it as the standard. I am using it as the first datapoint. There will be games where we have many plays between the two teams and some where there won't be as many, ODU had 68 offensive plays, the Hokies had 73.

Of our remaining opponents, the number of offensive snaps/defensive snaps they've taken this season are:

Purdue: 60/82 (35-39 L vs Fresno St)
Rutgers: 73/62 (24-7 W vs Northwestern)
Marshall: 61/74 (21-17 W vs Albany)
Pittsburgh: 77/36 (45-7 W vs Wofford)
FSU: 66/64 (45-24 W vs LSU)
Wake: 65/65 (37-17 W vs Elon)
Syracuse: 91/58 (65-0 W vs Colgate)
Louisville: 65/70 (39-34 W vs GT)
BC: 66/78 (24-27 OTL vs NIU)
State: 72/53 (24-14 W vs UCONN)
UVA: 64/85 (13-49 L vs Tennessee)

The average is 69....nice..../66 snaps per game so far. Right in that 135 number if you discounted punt and fg snaps of VTs games last year.

Watching the Puke game on my phone. Close out to check TKP after several hours of not doing so. Read thru like 15 comments. Go back to game and they are STILL in commercial break. Sheesh.

Way to throw shade at both teams by not calling it the Clemson game.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.
