Yeah, I noticed in early games we'd get behind the guy with the ball and then be tackling them from behind and pushing them forward for extra yards on the play. It seemed like they weren't doing that as much either.

First game I have been able to watch this season and we looked mostly cohesive. Our O-Line is really bad, especially the right side. Didn't realize how bad until I saw it myself. But the play calling mostly schemed away from that. Now I just need to watch every game from here on FAM!

The good thing about this is now the staff may have a formula for success regarding practice and game prep. Because these guys played an inspired game. And Bhayshul Tuten is a very bad man - that one run was the closest thing I've seen to the infamous Ryan Williams dragging a NCSU player to the end zone play. Looking forward to watching him operate in space. With better blocking he is easily a 1000-yard/season back.

Leg for any Princess Bride reference! Here's hoping the below(slightly altered) are how next weeks game goes(substituting VT for Wesley and FSU for Humperdinck):
Prince Humperdinck: First things first, to the death.
Westley: No. To the pain.
Prince Humperdinck: I don't think I'm quite familiar with that phrase.
Westley: I'll explain, and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand, you warthog-faced buffoon.
Prince Humperdinck: That may be the first time in my life a man has dared insult me.
Westley: It won't be the last. To the pain means the first thing you will lose will be your feet below the ankles. Then your hands at the wrists. Next your nose.
Prince Humperdinck: And then my tongue, I suppose. I killed you too quickly the last time. A mistake I don't mean to duplicate tonight.
Westley: I wasn't finished. The next thing you will lose will be your left eye followed by your right.
Prince Humperdinck: And then my ears, I understand. Let's get on with it.
Westley: Wrong! Your ears you keep, and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing?" will echo in your perfect ears. That is what "to the pain" means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever.
Prince Humperdinck: I think you're bluffing.
Westley: It's possible, Pig; I might be bluffing. It's conceivable, you miserable, vomitous mass, that I'm only lying here because I lack the strength to stand. But, then again...perhaps I have the strength after all.
*Westley stands and raises his sword to Humperdinck*
Hokies: Drop...your...sword spearr!.
*FSU drops its sword spear*

I will happily eat crow. I didn't think we stood a chance and the team showed some real swagger for the first time in years and we got a much needed win. It's been a good day

FAM!! There were 4 Pitt students sitting 3 rows in front of us talking shit all night long. After the fumble they just kept chanting they were a second half team. They left after the field goal. Go Hokies!

I didn't have it like this though! I figured we'd win like 13-10.
We have such a long way to go, but time and time again, we took advantage of Pitt's mistakes tonight. That's something this team has been severely lacking.
And I loved the killer instinct on offense to put us up three scores two different times within the game flow. There was a "here we go again" moment after the two Pitt TDs, but the team just got back up and took control of the game again. That is serious growth for this team, they're learning how to win.
LET'S GO HOKIES!

I think that drive in the fourth quarter was like 9plus minutes. All the penalties and they just kept going and going....till JLove split em. That drive was the ugliest/best drive I've seen in a very long time.

edit: after watching the highlights, this was the best called game of Tyler Bowen's career and it's not particularly close. So refreshing to see a VT OC actually play to his players' strengths and account for their weaknesses. Drones and Tuten are enough of a running threat that things may actually open up downfield moving forward. Maybe. Of course, we had big play TDs through the air last night too, so it might work in reverse.
Props to the fans for showing out and bringing the Terrordome, too. Man, I forgot how good it felt to watch the Hokies win.

Yes- very much so! Multiple false start/delay of game penalties against Pitt. Most of the crowd stayed til the end.
Loved Danny Coale leading the Let's Go Hokies" cheer during the game and saying "Sugar Bowl! I CAUGHT that ball !"
Also the recognition of the vet who flew 50 missions in WW2 then graduated from VT in 1950 AND had multiple generations of his family subsequently graduate fromTech!

I'm wondering if the limits on contact practices make it harder for him to tell how things will play out in games, so he has to do his adjusting to the talent we have once the season starts. Because it absolutely seemed like he was calling plays to take advantage of the player's capabilities.
Also wonder if Wells may be a better passer in practice and game stress gets in his head and he puts too much on it and isn't as accurate, so the plays called for him may not have worked in game. And seemed to do worse if we got behind.
Fortunately, Drones took the setback of his fumble and turned around and was productive. So, looks like Drones has much better game mentality and will be our QB1 for several years!
Regardless, the other thing I would say is, last year we were really limited with the receivers we had, and look what Pry and company went and got. Well, and they got Tuten after limited run production last year also. Oh, and Drones also. After the previous 6 years of hit or (mostly) miss from the portal, it feels like we definitely used it well. Granted, I know some could say we should have gotten linemen, but it seems like we definitely got a lot of good pieces from the portal.
Considering how FSU did against BC, I'm interested how we'll do against them (FSU for now since we play BC later). I mean, BC just barely beat a very bad UVA team (BC turned the ball over 4 times!), but also lost to FSU 29-31. FSU only had 311 yards of offense against Clemson and 350 against BC.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Not even close to what I was saying. (Amongst the several points I had). I'm just wondering if limited contact practices make it harder for coaches to gauge things with their teams.
Also saying I think Drones is a MUCH better game QB because he functions well under game pressure, where, based on what the coaches said about Wells, I wonder if he (Wells) doesn't just do better with no game stress (so he makes mistakes coaches weren't seeing in practice with no game stress). Meaning Wells isn't going to be a good game QB, and we are MUCH better off with Drones.
Not sure where you got it being a fine line or tightrope - changing QBs with different capabilities changes things dramatically.
Also made points about current coaching staff making much better use of the portal. Because a lot of Fuente's portal pickups didn't work out, well, or his recruits in general, whereas we've seen a lot of good production from receivers, RB, and QB we picked up in the portal this past offseason.

Just messing, wasn't actually serious with my reply. Only saying that FSU is a pretty good team who nearly lost to a bad team that almost lost to a horrid team.

But given the yardage FSU was putting up, it doesn't seem like they are a top 5 program. I haven't watched them, but the stats don't have the look. I'm just interested to see how we can play them, especially if we have the kind of performance we just had against Pitt.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
We've seen this a couple of times, twice with hooker, once at VT and again at Tenn. Anthony Richardson was similar at UF. I think qbs that run more don't do well in practices because it limits them, they can't take the hit and move the pile a few yards in practice, they don't change how the defense defends in practice because they are running plays that gets them hit. I have no problem believing that Wells can drop dimes all day long that Drones may never be capable of, but as Mike Tyson says, everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree - I'm just guessing why the coaches were starting Wells over Drones (especially since Wells did make some nice looking passes, just not consistently).
But it sounds like they are happy with Drones as QB1 (some people on here had commented they were worried they'd put Wells back in as primary once he was better).
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think some of us are jaded. Once Wells is healthy, the old coaching staff would yank Drones the moment he makes a mistake and trot Wells back out there
In honesty, this coaching staff hasn't had the opportunity to prove that they would or wouldn't do that and because of our dismal history offensively our default assumption as fans is the worst case scenario.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Edit: I think I'm remembering something the analysts were saying during the game and misremembered thinking Pry said it, so removing my comment.
Only thing I'll say is I have a hard time seeing the coaches go back to Wells considering how much Drones' mobility opens things up from a play calling perspective.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
In the postgame interview, Pry said that he's better, but his mobility still isn't 100%. Even though he was in uniform, it was probably in case Drones got injured or had to come out for some reason.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Pry better tread lightly on the Drones situation now. If he puts Wells back in, we better win. Period. Drones getting 4 series vs. Wake in a 20 point loss will blow up this fan base now. Regardless of practices, etc. the fans are rallying behind Drones. He can make plays- that's all the fans see. Pry will have a huge mutiny if Wells is back there getting sacked.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
totally agree - there were several instances in the game vs Pitt where Drones made a positive play when it probably should have been a negative play and certainly would have been with Wells. Wells has no vision and limited awareness and he would have been sacked so many times on Saturday in situations where Drones was able to fight through tackles and make a positive play.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I feel like we're suffering from Fuente PTSD expecting Pry to make all the same dumb mistakes Fuente did. I sure hope Pry doesn't put Wells in, and it isn't just because Drones' mobility opens up playcalling. From what I've seen, I think Drones has the better on-field mentality, meaning when/if we get behind, he doesn't over-stress and make mistakes. He may play with some urgency (like at the end of the first half with 53 seconds left), but Wells seems like it gets in his head and he makes mistakes.
In the post game interview, Pry also said (I can't remember his exact words) that Drones hasn't exactly stepped up his leadership (like "I'm the boss now"), but just demonstrating confidence that the team is responding to and respects and like they're rallying behind him. I think that also will add to the coaches keeping him on the field.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Based on Pry's post game it sounds like the team is rallying behind Drones too. It would be a pretty bad choice to change back now. I'll be curious to see how he answers this question tomorrow.

Very pleased that we actually were physically competitive with Pitt. THAT is an improvement. We competed with them instead of getting our asses kicked in the trenches. That is a positive sign for this re-build. You have to start somewhere. Pitt is a 4-5 win team this year at best, so getting blown up by them would NOT be a good thing, so we have a start here- we were competitive physically. I'm encouraged by that. I'm also encouraged by the play calling and weapons we used on offense- it looked like we were actually aggressive. Encouraging. 11 Penalties is still way too many- that must be cleaned up. But this was a good win- a sign things are improving. If we want to get back to being VT- beating shitty pitt teams is a must.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
when you consider two penalties were unsportsman like conduct (and TBH, the Hokies haven't played with an edge since what, 2016? I'll let those slide for now) and a phantom tripping call, it wasn't too terrible. Poorly time procedural penalties have killed us the past two years more than anything (false starts on 3rd downs, PI's after a big stop etc) and those seem to be better for the most part this season.
I think we technically had more penalty yards than Pitt did, but it felt like theirs were way worse - false starts, delay of games, some back breaking stuff that got them behind the chains.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I have no idea what you look like or anything but when we got that big push on 4th down that just was a demoralizing push (end of 1st) I just thought you'd be jumping up and down scream "finally where has that been"
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
WHERE WAS THIS PLAY CALLING BEFORE THIS GAME?!?!?! Like holy shit, it was like night and day, especially in the run game!!!
Winning this game has to be huge for morale for the players too I have to bet. Dominated for most part on both sides of the ball. Outside of 2 big plays and the Drones fumble, Pitt couldn't do anything. Yes I know they're probably not good, but it was refreshing to see an almost complete game on both sides.
I am going to Wake Forest game and all I wanted to be is at least 1-1 in ACC so they are still in contention for ACC and have something to play for by then. Going 0-2 into WF game would probably have most of the fan base apathetic... And on that note, fucking cheers to Hokie Nation. Show me any other 1-3 team (with only win against an ODU like team and a loss to a G5 team) with a fan base that shows the fuck up and packs their stadium. This fan base deserves a winner!!!

Amen- best atmosphere in the stadium since UNC (1st postgame Covid)(and without the widespread poor behavior of that game). So nice when Enter Sandman isn't the best part of the game! Crowd was still very loud even when the game was clearly in hand (last two minutes or so)
And on a positive in-person note, the security folks were doing good job (in section 31 at least) of policing people(esp. students) being in other folk's seats.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think part of the play calling is Drones' mobility. Isn't Pop Watson also mobile? That may be the type of QB they were hoping for from the start but took what they could.
A lot of the scheming looked like it was allowing for Drones to run. Wells is somewhat mobile, but nothing like Drones.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Wells shouldn't ever see the field again outside of injury to Drones. It is blatantly clear he opens up our offense more than Wells does. Always gotta keep defenses honest, and Wells wasn't doing that.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Pop Watson is going to need a bit more Oline because he is small compared to Drones and probably can't take the same beating. Drones is 3" taller and 44 lbs heavier.

Thanks for posting. I tuned in late and saw Eddie emotional but didn't know the context. He is a proud Hokie and I hope he continues to do great things in his broadcasting career.
He was talking about how his sister was his hero, it was really sweet!
That was a decent product we put on the field tonight. Let's do it again, FAM!
Petition to have Jurkovec be the qb for every team we play against forever fam
Seriously he is the only P5 QB pry has beaten lol
I had to think about this longer than I should have, but holy shit I can't believe that's true.
Pointing out the negative doesn't seem like a great takeaway for a win like that. We're getting better. We'll beat more.
I really wasn't trying to be negative, just wanted to share a wacky stat
This is a good win. I'm equally happy for Pry and the players.
It's got to be really hard to stay focused and motivated when things are going bad, and it says a lot about the team's character to be able to respond like this.
I love Eddie Royal's Deep Maroon suit and orange tie FAM!!!!!

Best win since hooker was our qb. Feels good.

Lane and Cassell weren't mentioned...
Ok yes but now try to do it drunk after a 8 hour tailgate
In the moment (in said state) I got 16-(easy to get all of what were the dining halls in my years there(Schultz, Dietrick, Owens), all the then prairie quad dorms(Lee, Pritchard, Oshag), Cassell, Lane,Burruss, McBryde, Randolph, Whittemore, Slusher tower, Slusher wing, east AJ,Thomas...)
I'm not sure many programs sellout their stadium with a 1-3 team in a clear rebuild. Hokie nation is special!
This fanbase deserves a good football team
Yes. And if we hang on long enough, we just might get one.
The 100 recruits that were there had to be impressed.
I heard them mention that - what an atmosphere for recruits!!! I hope that pays dividends for our recruiting classes!
Seeing this game and hearing the fans so loud the opponents offense can't hear and getting penalties off that, brought back some good memories. Love games when the fans are in it like that. And selling out even when we were 1-3? Feels good! I sure hope we can see similar playing the rest of the season!
Man I go on vacation and can't see one damn game and apparently we go gangbusters on Pitt. FML
Fam
Sorry to be the one to tell you, but you have to stay on vacation forever.
I will accept this burden for the team.
We only scored 3 points less on Pitt than 17th ranked UNC. The next highest score on Pitt was 27. We're improving on offense FAM!
Edit: and our defense only allowed 2 touchdowns.
Edit, edit: also over 400 yards of offense, pretty balanced between running and passing.
What are pitt's stats less the two long TD completions? 🧐
Almost 50% of their total yard was on the two long scoring passes. Otherwise we held pitt to about 140 yards total offense.
All three of their scores came from Hokie mistakes. Our offense set up and completed drives!
FAM
I mean that screen was a perfect play call at the perfect time against a corner blitz .... oh you mean the 11 missed tackles after they caught the ball.
Lol one of the tackles actively pushed the runner about 5 yards downfield beyond the other tacklers.
I found this to be hilarious!
I just thought back to the Sugar bowl where I believ1e Eddie Whitley took out our own guy
We launched him past the other tacklers... That is going to be a huge lesson this week for wrapping up not just hitting.
Yeah, I noticed in early games we'd get behind the guy with the ball and then be tackling them from behind and pushing them forward for extra yards on the play. It seemed like they weren't doing that as much either.
The night just hits different after a dub
And the mile walk to lot 18 hurts a LOT less with a big win!!
First game I have been able to watch this season and we looked mostly cohesive. Our O-Line is really bad, especially the right side. Didn't realize how bad until I saw it myself. But the play calling mostly schemed away from that. Now I just need to watch every game from here on FAM!
Eat. Shit Pitt! I think I witnessed a play where TWO VT WR were open past the sticks on third and long. Not sure I can remember the last time this happened. Today was a good day.
I will never take a win against Pitt for granted.
Fuck Narduzzi
The Bruichladdich is open, my friends. I don't have any bourbon, but lots of scotch. Sorry, future me!
I apologized to my wife before she went to bed in Q3 so I'm good, right?
Right?
keep it up with the Scotch and the couch will be more comfy than any bed.
Sleep with one eye open... FAM!
The good thing about this is now the staff may have a formula for success regarding practice and game prep. Because these guys played an inspired game. Other than APR dragging offensive linemen to the QB, that is.
FAM!!! I don't have a voice anymore. Left it in Lane stadium getting the W!
Leg for any Princess Bride reference! Here's hoping the below(slightly altered) are how next weeks game goes(substituting VT for Wesley and FSU for Humperdinck):
And I thought that I was a huge PB fan. Kudos and a leg to you fellow Hokie. Inconceivable!
there are a few of us about - I fell in love with the movie, watching it several times over as a child, and even read the book when I was in high school. It's a classic for sure!
PB fan as to both Princess Bride AND Skippy Creamy peanut butter! (I LIVE on peanut butter toast/sandwiches-literally)
Username checks out
You should try peanut butter, Nutella, and marshmallow whip.
Go Hokies!
You love to see it
LET'S GOOOOOOO ALL YOU STUPID FUCKS WHO THOUGHT WE WEREN'T GONNA WIN ANOTHER GAME THIS YEAR WE'RE 1-0 IN THE ACC AND CHICAGO HOKIES WERE LIT
IM ONE OF THOSE STUPID FUCKS AND I TAKE THIS PERSONALLY

Went to Chicago last September and fell in love with it. So nice this time of year.
If you come back during football season come to the watch party and we'll show you the real Chicago
YOU STUPID FUCK!
I'm one of the stupid fucks that was convinced we'd get boatraced last night!
STUPID FUCKS UNITE!
Why do men have their best ideas during sex? Because they are plugged into a genius! 😂 Not a stupid fuck anymore! 😂
IM A STUPID FUCK THAT BAILED ON GOING TO THE GAME BECAUSE I THOUGHT WE WOULD GET BOATRACED AND I SUFFERED FROM SOME SERIOUS FOMO BECAUSE OF IT.
Fam! We have a better ACC record than Clemson
But I thought we wanted to be like clemson? 😂
I called it!
VT money line was the only hit on my bet slip!!! FAAAAAAMMMMMM!!!
Damn. Made it all the way down here without a "Fuck Pat Narduzzi"?
FAM!
A lot of "Fuck Narduzzi," but you might be the first "Fuck Pat Narduzzi"
I LOVE EVERYONE IN THIS BAR
Oh my god, a win? A WIN??? FAMMMMMMMMM
edit: after watching the highlights, this was the best called game of Tyler Bowen's career and it's not particularly close.
Definitely agree re: Bowen and I'm really hoping he takes a step forward after seeing a plan work!
I was going to ask since I didn't see the game:
Night game, hated opponent... were the fans lit?
(The kids still say lit, right?)
I did the math quickly. He was drafted in 42 at 18. That meant he was there walking unassisted etc at age 99.
So what you're saying is there's a fine line between bad teams and good teams and we're walking the tightrope?
Fair enough.
But given the yardage FSU was putting up, it doesn't seem like they are a top 5 program. I haven't watched them, but the stats don't have the look. I'm just interested to see how we can play them, especially if we have the kind of performance we just had against Pitt.
I agree - I'm just guessing why the coaches were starting Wells over Drones (especially since Wells did make some nice looking passes, just not consistently).
But it sounds like they are happy with Drones as QB1 (some people on here had commented they were worried they'd put Wells back in as primary once he was better).
Edit: I think I'm remembering something the analysts were saying during the game and misremembered thinking Pry said it, so removing my comment.
Only thing I'll say is I have a hard time seeing the coaches go back to Wells considering how much Drones' mobility opens things up from a play calling perspective.
Wells was healthy enough he was at Marshall in uniform ready to go. Drones's play is keeping him on the sideline.
In the postgame interview, Pry said that he's better, but his mobility still isn't 100%. Even though he was in uniform, it was probably in case Drones got injured or had to come out for some reason.
Pry will have a huge mutiny if Wells is back there getting sacked.
totally agree - there were several instances in the game vs Pitt where Drones made a positive play when it probably should have been a negative play and certainly would have been with Wells. Wells has no vision and limited awareness and he would have been sacked so many times on Saturday in situations where Drones was able to fight through tackles and make a positive play.
Based on Pry's post game it sounds like the team is rallying behind Drones too. It would be a pretty bad choice to change back now. I'll be curious to see how he answers this question tomorrow.
FAM !!!
Under the weather w/ bad cold and was in bed before the final score.
What a game. Great outside run game, great QB runs, big pass plays, stout run defense.
I will take credit for yelling at my tv all seaspn about not just running up the middle every play and bowen hearing it through the camera
Someone said there was a Benny's pizza challenge in the stadium what was it?
Eat as much of a slice of Benny's pizza in 30 seconds. Race between 2 contestants. It replaced the Turkey Leg eating challenge.
Speaking of Turkey legs, I added them back on the grill this week, haven't had them since ODU. But now I know what the key to winning out is. Turkey legs every game, without fail.
Man......it feels good to be a HOKIE this morning FAM!!!!
Probably one of the best produced "Enter Sandman" I recall. I know there have been better, but this one was among the best. FAM
New guy ran the Video board for the entire game. Well done.
Get this guy a contract!
Normally the assistant director. The head guy was absent.
WAS THIS A TURNING POINT!?! EITHER WAY, FAM!!!
It's October and we have a better ACC record than Clemson, NC State, Miami, Pitt, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Syracuse, BC, and UVA
The most points scored under PRY. FAM!
The most points scored under PRY, so far
The most points scored under PRY so far! FAM!
Really love Payne breaking out the last two weeks, coming back from an achilles ain't easy, especially for a big dude and he stuck it out and has played into a big role. Love it
How I feel in the AM after a semi dominant win against a team we hate:

I checked here to see if VT won, and found this thread!
Thanks!
FAM!!!!!
Also, special shoutout to Pat Narduzzi, well, because I feel certain he's salty today.
FELL ASLEEP AFTER WATCHING PRY AND DRONES GETTING INTERVIEWED ON SET POST GAME WITH THE ACCN CREW SO I FORGOT TO POST HERE, BUT - FAM!!!
Also-in both our wins, the fan kicking for cash made the field goal and won $1000...coincidence? maybe but no pressure on the person up next at homecoming.
Y'all was famming so hard last night that nobody created this thread. I looked for it about 10 mins after the game ended and never found it.
Trust the process even the shitty parts FAM
Does a sack fumble not count as a sack anymore? Mario Kendricks not getting his due in the box score.
APR punched the ball out so he "stole" the sack in the stat sheet
That's atrocious, you can't take that sack away from super Mario.
If we want to get back to being VT- beating shitty pitt teams is a must.
when you consider two penalties were unsportsman like conduct (and TBH, the Hokies haven't played with an edge since what, 2016? I'll let those slide for now) and a phantom tripping call, it wasn't too terrible. Poorly time procedural penalties have killed us the past two years more than anything (false starts on 3rd downs, PI's after a big stop etc) and those seem to be better for the most part this season.
I think we technically had more penalty yards than Pitt did, but it felt like theirs were way worse - false starts, delay of games, some back breaking stuff that got them behind the chains.
We lost over 100 yards in penalties. Inexcusable. DO better.
sir this is a fam thread
I have no idea what you look like or anything but when we got that big push on 4th down that just was a demoralizing push (end of 1st) I just thought you'd be jumping up and down scream "finally where has that been"
WHERE WAS THIS PLAY CALLING BEFORE THIS GAME?!?!?!
Wells shouldn't ever see the field again outside of injury to Drones. It is blatantly clear he opens up our offense more than Wells does. Always gotta keep defenses honest, and Wells wasn't doing that.
I didn't say it explicitly, but yeah, that's pretty much what I meant.
Pop Watson is going to need a bit more Oline because he is small compared to Drones and probably can't take the same beating. Drones is 3" taller and 44 lbs heavier.
