My FSU friend sent me this pod. It's a really good listen:
Bud's analysis on VT is pretty spot on IMO - it's really impressive how well informed he is about every team. If you have time before the game, definitely recommend giving it a listen.
On the VT Offense vs FSU defense:
- Talent isn't there.
- QB is getting better, but still not great. Talks about Wells going out, and drones coming in, etc
- No talent on the OL.
- Decent WRs, talks about the loss of Jennings
- Thinks performance against Pitt was mostly due to Pitt being really really bad.
On the VT defense vs FSU offense:
- It's ranked in the 50's per SP+, but Bud isn't completely buying it; he believes that our ranking is due to preseason predictions still factoring in, catching Purdue in a weird spot, and not playing any good offenses yet.
- Says Delane is a stud and a top 100 draft pick, Stroman is pretty good if he's healthy, or ends are quick, but safety and LB play is killing us.
- Also says he take the FSU offense over an 'all-star' offense from the teams we played.
- In general, was able to really sussinctly describe our defense. I was (again) really impressed by how well informed he was.
His predictions include:
- Under 350 yards of total offense for VT
- VT Success rate in the 20%'s/low 30%'s
- Says FSU should break a big explosive run or two due to gap fit issues that VT has had so far this year
- FSU should be scoring in the 40's, if they don't, then they're probably not a legitimate threat to win the CFP.

Here's to only allowing 39 points:

Buy a lotto ticket!
I'm not convinced FSU is a letigimat threat to win the CFP regardless of how many points they score on us. They could score 70 and I don't think they'd get past round 1 of the Playoff...if they even make it
O/U is 53 for this game. Hopefully our offense is t completely inept and we can contribute to hitting the over
Bud's pretty smart and knows his stuff. But he does usually have a blind spot when it comes to FSU. I think he's overestimating the FSU offense and underestimating our defense. Also their top db Fentrell Cypress is a wahoo so you know we're going to be making catches all over him
We can keep this one close, barring blown plays and turnovers like we saw vs Purdue and Rutgers. I would guess 34-24 FSU if we play a decent game with a below average amount of mistakes (and their top playmakers don't just go off)
I'll have what you are drinking, or smoking... If we leave FSU with a 10 point defeat while only allowing 34 points to FSU then I would say we shouldn't lose another game for the rest of the season.
I remember when Bronco signed this kid. I watched his HS film. I thought he was underrated coming out and was likely one of Bronco's best recruits, despite the rankings. The kid is a fantastic player for the Noles.
you heard it here first. We won't lose another game for the rest of the season!
Tebow?
Cocaine is one he'll of a drug
In October 1973 - a year that has been referenced a surprising amount around here lately - VT lost at Alabama 77-6.
Improvements aside, it is a major bummer that we may be staring another 70burger in the face half a century later.
I listened to that whole game on the radio back in '73. We finally got some points late against their scrubs. Maybe it's one game recency bias, but I think we'll show better tomorrow..
According to my dad, the only Hokies remotely happy after that game were the Class of '77 Highty-Tighties.
So that '77 corps class would have been freshman during that game. Usually losses are not well received by corps leadership. Why would the Highty Tighties Band members of that class be happy?
I think it was just a little joke
Because their class number was on the scoreboard.
I was there the last time we played at FSU. I went with a Nole alum, and stayed with her Nole alum family. I tailgated with Noles. And all I heard was how great they were and it was gonna be a bloodbath, and I smiled, nodded, drank their bourbon. I also told one guy I didn't think Willie Taggart would last 12 months and almost got laughed out of the tailgate.
And they were right in a way. It WAS a bloodbath. We beat that ass, got to do the mock chop, my friend and her parents left way early, and I closed down the bars with a mass of other Hokies after the game.
FSU is perpetually overrated, especially by their own fans, and no matter how much we suck, we tend to play better against them. At a minimum we beat the hell out of the 24 point spread, but scared money don't make money, so I'm calling the win.
I had to look up the last time we played them because for the life of me I couldn't remember! THAT'S right! They came out in those weird ass gold shaded helmets and we stomped them. Honestly it's a crime that we haven't played them in half a decade. That was one of the first games I watched at CP Shuckers and the VT alumni association and my (now) fiancee. Geeze time flies
I will say that some FSU fans got my back against a group of Miami fans in a bar in Key West one time, so I respect them for that.
But did you close?
I was at that game, too.
I had bought some 50 yard line seats for the game. The Nole beside me gave me the occasional "accidental elbow nudge" in the first half, but left at halftime and didn't come back.
I thoroughly enjoyed that game, and the Hokies there made their presence known. Was glorious.
ugghh....yeah I agree on the big plays due to gap fits. Not expecting a win just hoping we don't get embarrassed and play sound football.
If we could look somewhat competitive and keep showing improvement based off what we saw last week.. that would be nice.
Otherwise, I'm already calling for tomorrow to be a wash. I mean I'll watch, but I probably won't like it. Lol
I'd keep the TV muted cuz you know the broadcast is gonna be insufferably pro-FSU.
All TV broadcasts are insufferable.
Definitely going to have this game on as part of Multiview to keep an eye on it, but doubt I'll switch to it exclusively.
Bud is spot on:
1). Our offense isn't good and Pitt was just that bad.
2) Defense is worse than the rankings - Marve fate might be decided at trend for last 6 games.
3) VT talent is low and coaches are learning on the fly (in some cases not learning at all - see offense)
Might want to listen to Bud as while annoying he was much more right than wrong.
I think you're sort of putting words in his mouth, based on what I heard, Bud didn't really comment on the scheme or coaches. Kind of a leap to suggest he thinks our coaches are bad/incapable or that our scheme. If anything, he was signifavtly more critical of the roster talent than the scheme.
Maybe I wasn't clear, but I was making additional comments not summarizing all his comments. Ex my comment on Marve was mine alone. His point was that the D ranking is overrated because we haven't played good offenses.
His assessment was spot on
