Man, what a change in recruiting strategy we've seen the last couple of years. Go for it! The more talent the better, for our coaches (unlike lolva)
I agree! We are definitely more ambitious!
Beat me by 9 seconds.... alas. Anyways, interesting to see us loading up on QBs, trying to make up for some misses over the years. It looks like Lefty & Co. want to be sure no one is thrown into the fire before they're ready.
I am very impressed with our recruiting efforts now. I really think with this newer group of coaches on O side of things, we are headed in the right direction.
He said on 2/14 that he was going to visit an ACC school other than Clemson in two weeks and it seems that ACC school is going to be Tech. Maybe he commits this weekend?
He definitely would be a good pick up. Almost his entire family played Big 12 football, could help open up new connections to the Southwest.
Possibly, but I don't think that's a long term recruiting strategy that benefits Beamer Co.
I don't think so either. I think we are just looking for someone who could come in and catch on quick. Ford and Durkin will need time to develop. Leal is still questionable about how he will handle the O, however, I think the showing against UCLA doesn't reflect his true ability. Motley is the one I am looking forward to in Spring ball. I think he may be something special.
Here is his bio per TT...

He would probably be a better choice than Wittek.
I think so too.
How so?
Brewer is a 6'1" 185 lbs, former 3* recruit who has never started a game. His background is in wide-open, spread offenses. He played under Chad Morris.
Wittek is 6'4", 215lbs, former 4* recruit, #3 QB in the country who has started 2 or 3 games in his career. His background is in a more balanced system. He played HS football at Mater Dei, one of the top 3 HS programs in the country.
Brewer 41-58 440 yards 70% completion rate and 5 TDs and 0 picks with a 160.8 rating in his career.
Wittek 50-95 600 yards 53% completion rate and 3 TDs and 6 picks with a 106.9 rating in his career.
But you can't really judge them so far, although many think Wittek has been a bust so far and if Brewer probably would of started for Texas Tech had he not of gotten injured last year. It's just my opinion that he would be a better option than Wittek, however.
Looking at Brewer's game log, it looks like he's just played in mop up situations.
Texas Tech's QB's are always interesting, whatever it is that they look for and utilize doesn't always translate.
Where's French?
I dream of one day having a starting offense made out of 11-different QBs.
I would look forward to seeing the Hook and Lateral play often.
The Jared Lorenzen-sized QBs could primarily be the O-Line.
Is that a real qb?
yes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vt1CBiRgwIQ
Jared Lorenzen, aka KY Jelly. (he played for Kentucky)
Hefty Lefty!
Pizza the Hutt plays football?
That is hilarious!
That is the single most appropriate mascot his team could have.
He looks like he ate his center.
Dude is a legend here in KY. A true competitor and has a great sense of humor too. Also was a backup QB for Giants and Colts for a while.
Love the scales on the jersey. Makes him look like a Spider Man villan.
What makes this picture even more impressive is that this guy is taller than Bucky Hodges...he is 8 feet tall and 750lbs....
The Pilsbury Throw-Boy!
BOOM! And we have a winner. No more entries please.
11 TEs that played QB in high school would be better ...
11-different QBs. 11-different TE's. same thing.
Given the fact Tech signed 3 QBs, and the report that Tech reached out to Max Wittek, it seems as if Loeffler really wants another body to be a part of the QB competition this fall.
Do you think Travon McMillian will stay at qb? I know he is listed as qb/athlete. This may have already been discussed and I just missed it.
So, would either he or Wittek have to sit out a year? One is a Soph, the other a R-Soph, seems if either of them transfer to VT, they would have to sit out a year. If they do this would seem to not necessarily put a couple experienced QBs (1 being Leal) in the experience gap next year. So, I get going after everything, but with this many QBs in the mix, some would have to either switch positions or transfer if they didn't get the 1st or 2nd spot by 2015.
If Lefty is going after these transfers and they have to sit a year, then there are certainly transitions afoot. Hmmmm
Wittek is graduating in May so he could play right away. Not sure about the other.
If I read this article right, it says in there towards the bottom he is graduating in May.

Had a very impressive list of offers coming out of HS. Would love to see him get the opportunity to compete.
How do the other 17 QBs on the roster feel about this? Especially guys like Durkin who was promised the opportunity to play early?
***NOTE: Opportunity, not guarantee, I realize. But still.
Was thinking the same thing. I wonder how many other QB's Loeffler promised the opportunity to play early. Ford? Wittek? Durkin?
I think Motley would have the worst end of the stick if Wittek or Brewer came in. I think he would be moved to another position but that's just my opinion.
Honestly, I know that we have some very promising young talent at QBs that we don't want to lose, but the more competition the better IMO. If a transfer wins the job and someone leaves Tech, so be it. As long as the best man for the job steps up. Not everyone can be happy.
Very true. Keeps everything more honest if there is competition. Forces you to work harder.
All good points, and very true, but if I had just committed to a school that already was bringing in two other QB recruits and had two QBs on the roster, THEN started pursuing transfers as well? I would be asking myself and the coaches a few questions.
That would make you wonder. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Yea we will QBs everywhere! The VT starting lineup football IQ will be off the charts. Is there a Mensa-like Society for that?
This is awesome, but how is he at TE?
Is he the qb we had committed a few years back that eventually decommitted and signed with Texas Tech? It might be another guy but I seem to remember having a pretty highly rated quarterback decommitt and choose Texas Tech
That was T.J. Millweard who signed with UCLA and transferred to Kansas.
I Thought He decommitted to go to Az State?...Be closer to home. Cali aint close to Texas.

But then there is this:

I realize this isn't Feelingsball, but I would feel badly for Leal if this happened. He's played the good soldier for 4 years waiting for his shot.
It's not feelingsballz. It's Fosterball.
Fosterball is the defense. That's the part of the team that consistently works properly. Loefflerball is still being evaluated.
Or more appropriately, Rogersball
#Rogers4QB
#Rogers4QB #AllOtherQBs4TE
IMO, Lefty is wanting to tutor his young guys so they are ready when the time comes. It also shows that the staff really does not have any faith in the current QB's on roster. Bringing in 4 QB's shows that we have some good backups but no one in his opinion is a starter.
Well, I think he doesn't know if there is a starter until he has them all on campus in practice. Durkin seems bent on playing early or could be a potential transfer. I think Ford knows he has a chance and will bide his time if need be to become the best he can be. I think what these potential transfers means is that VT plans to not be in the position they've had in the past decade where there really was only 1 choice at QB. Not to say that those choices were the wrong ones but had we had this level of talent and number of options then the #1 rated TE would have stayed at TE and not be forced/asked to move to QB. Not saying that I didn't love Logan at QB or think that is where he should be, but just using as example.
The question is "what is early"? To me, most QBs who think "playing early" means before their r-soph year are delusional.
However there seem to be a lot of delusional kids these days who have been told way too many times that the sun revolves around them. Basketball is full of them and it's creeping into football especially at the QB position. We're going to see a lot more of these middling grad student QB transfers everywhere going forward. And I'd say the odds of a 4th or 5th yr VT QB transferring out within the next 4 years is really high. It's great when you have the need, but it won't be so great when depth is an issue. Just look at Texas Tech's QB situation right now...a hot steaming mess. It's going to be yet another challenge for coaches to deal with.
Agreed. Generally I would consider r-soph as the earliest time a QB should play early and only for really great players.
the last two Heisman trophy winners beg to differ...
Trevor Knight comes to mind as well. Also Andrew Luck, Kellen Moore, Aaron Murray, Brett Hundley, Taylor Martinez, and Marcus Mariota. Quite a few red-shirt freshmen QB's have had some success recently. There is a huge drop off when you look at true freshmen QBs, though. The most successful true freshman QB in the BCS era I can find is Jeff Godfrey (UCF, 2010). From major conferences, Terrelle Pryor had a decent freshman season, as did Matt Barkley (and the 2009 USC offense was laoded), but neither put up eye-popping numbers. Tryod and RGIII could also be in that discussion. Not many others, though.
This article covers the topic pretty well.
Edit: A few notable omissions: Case Keenum and Teddy Bridgewater were also guys who were able to have some success as true freshmen. Colt McCoy would be another guy in the "really-good-red-shirt-freshman-season" club. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting. Still, very few guys have been able to play well as true freshman. It's a very short list, with most being 5-star, blue-chip prospects who ended up on NFL rosters. It seems having that one red-shirt year before being thrown in the deep end makes a huge difference. I think all three of the 2014 QB commits are capable of being great players for us, but if one of them starts this year, I will probably dookie a shooter.
True. That's why I said "generally" and "only for great players". You and pbw just named a whole bunch of stellar players.
Coached by Chad Morris, threw for 4,400 yards as a HS JR.... alrightythen.
I just realized that all Texas Tech QBs put up huge numbers, plus he was coached by Chad Morris in high school. I think he could be a good QB in Loeffler's system.
Coached by Chad Morris in HS? I don't see him ending up in Blacksburg.
I think that he said on February 14th that he was going to visit an ACC school other than Clemson this weekend which I would assume would be Tech at this point so I'm guessing that he is not going to end up there, but you never know.
Transfers go where they have a chance to play immediately. Hasn't Dabo already stated that Boyd's backup is now QB1?
Same as Beamer naming Leal QB1? Or better yet as definitive as a 17 year old committing to play for a certain school during their Junior year of high school?
I don't think Beamer has definitively said Leal is the starter. He said "For now, Leal is the guy" or some Beamerism like that, but he's never said that "Leal is the Hokies QB for 2014" like he did with Logan before. Have you seen otherwise?
That was my take on it too. Sounded to me like he was the guy to beat, but unlike with LT or Tyrod (his Jr/Sr yrs) where the competition had long since been decided.
I would think if Chad Morris really thinks this guy is better than what he currently has, then he would put on the full court press and bring him in to start. If he doesn't, he must believe his current QB's are better.
Here is what Clemson has:
Junior Cole Stoudt (6-5, 205, Dublin, Ohio) enters his third season as Boyd's backup. In high school, Stoudt - the son of former NFL quarterback Cliff Stoudt - passed for a school-record 4,393 yards and 52 touchdowns at Dublin-Coffman High School, breaking records held by former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.
Redshirt freshman Chad Kelly: Out of high school, Kelly was rated as the No. 4 quarterback in the nation and the No. 1 player in New York by ESPN.
And of course...the newest QB commit for Clemson:
Deshaun Watson-The #1 Dual threat QB in the nation for the class of 2014...he enrolled early in January and is already on campus.
I don't see Brewer going to Clemson and getting much of a shot...
I'm watching the 2013 Penn State-Syracuse game right now (first one of the season for both teams) and the longer this game goes, the more I'm a big fan of getting a transfer QB in here to compete for the job. I know we're all SUPER stoked about the guys coming in, but big-boy college football is no joke for a QB. Even the #1 QB recruit in the country, who very much looks the part and has been very calm and poised the whole game, has struggled. It's abundantly apparent that the game is just a little too fast for him, he's missing some easy throws, he's a little late on a throw that was picked off, etc. If Leal is the starter, awesome sauce, I'll be behind him 100%. However, if he's not the guy, I really don't want to put the offense (which doesn't have the supporting cast of Penn State) on the shoulders of a true freshman.
I think maybe a graduate transfer QB has a year of eligibility for next year plus Leal, allows a redshirt for the incoming class and then we get a r-Frsh for a QB in 2015. His second year as a starter is 2016.
We keep the best CB duo in the country because we're making a run at the NCG and Bristol.
