I feel like I read somewhere (perhaps an Andy Bitter article) that his injury is not a guaranteed season ender. And if that were the case, there's not a need for them to start pursuing a medical redshirt since you cant apply for that until after the season anyways
And in the case of Ali, medical redshirt might be a moot point for him anyways because he might think he's got the talent to go to the NFL as soon as he's eligible. And while I've only seen a few games of him between ODU and VT, I havent seen anything that would make me say he's wrong
Last I heard Pry make a statement on it was after the Pitt game. At the time the plan was for him to come back this season if possible. Jennings' social media showed him weight bearing without crutches in a CAM boot last week, so take that for what you will.
There has been internet chatter that he is considering red shirting, but I haven't seen a quote from Jennings or a staff member on this.

He was on the sideline on Saturday. I was in the West Stands, so I never got a view to see if he was still in a boot. But he did not have any crutches or anything assisting him standing and walking.

Speaking of ODU transfers, we need to go drop a bag of NIL on their LB Jason Henderson's doorstep. He may not be thinking about transferring, but someone needs to get Jennings to reach out and put the bug in his ear. He'd be a senior next year but he is currently leading the nation in tackles and run stops and is only half a TFL behind 1st place in that category too.

He was the leading tacker from 2022 with 179 tackles, 31 tackles more than the next guy. Looking back at it, it's surprising he didn't transfer out last year with every other talented player on that team. My guess is he would would follow suit this offseason to get some exposure, P5 experience, and NIL cash. Hopefully he does that in a VT uniform.

Pry has said something similar in the past. I swear it is in this press conference, but I wasn't able to find it on a quick search. This is still a great quote though.
edit: Found it, the quote was from a Roth interview with Pry last year. I actually put those words in Pry's mouth, he stops short of saying that they would be our feeder school.

I think both Jennings and Gallo are eligible for medical redshirts. Maybe both comeback in 2024? Get a tackle, a guard, and one more swing OL in the portal, and the VT offense could be cooking next year. (Assuming no major losses to the portal and draft.)

pretty sure medical redshirt is only for players that have a season-ending injury. I think you can play up to 4, then not be able to play any beyond that.
Regular redshirt is any 4 games.

This was his covid freebie year. Already had 2 years at WVU and 2 years at ODU. Can you truly redshirt in year 5 to get to covid year 6? Or does he have to take a medical redshirt to get the covid do-over in year 6?

According to DC, eligibility isn't a thing anymore! You can be 40, get married and have three kids before getting divorced, get a DUI and go through rehab, switch jobs six times, take out a second mortgage on your house, fall in with a cult until your now adult children save you, win the the lottery but lose all the money in a crypto Ponzi scheme, and you'll STILL have about 9 years of eligibility left. Unless you have a sick relative that lives near where you're trying to play. But even then, the NCAA will reverse course and let you play the second half of the season.

basically, the 2020 season at WVU doesn't count against eligibility. So he played four seasons prior to transferring, but had an available redshirt and the covid season. If he only appears in four or fewer games this season and redshirts, i believe he is eligible to return next year. Redshirt by definition does not count against your eligibility

Didn't one of the Wang brothers stick around for like 6 seasons, pre covid, because of a medical redshirt? Add then his younger brother David came in to play so, we had big ol Wangs on the OLine for a stretch of like 11 consecutive seasons, right?

Mutts did not have any more eligibility. you may be remembering when he entered the '22 draft with Aluma while maintaining his eligibility to come back for his final year of college ball in 22-23, which he did.
17-18: played at High Point (one year of eligibility used)
18-19: transferred to Delaware, sat out, redshirt, no eligibility used
19-20: played at Delaware, second year of eligibility used
20-21: grad transfer to Tech, immediate available, covid year, doesn't count
21-22: played at Tech, third year of eligibility used
22-23: played at Tech, fourth and final year of eligibility used

18-19: enrolled at vt, redshirted, did not use any eligibility
19-20: played at vt, first year of eligibility used
20-21: played at vt, covid year, no eligibility used
21-22: grad transferred to aTm, immediately eligible, played, second year of eligibility used
22-23: played at aTm, third year of eligiblity used
23-24: (this year) final year of eligiblity barring medical redshirt
It's wild and it feels wrong -- but 2020 athletic seasons did not count against eligibility so it was a whole entire free year

Yea, this is my thought as well. Dude is headed for the league. If he's a day 2 pick or better, he's gone.

He and Kyron were shown on broadcast in second half chatting and laughing.
Still in a boot

Lb Henderson is a tackling machine .
He's the best in the country at it. He should do it for us (instead of against us).

He certainly stood out last year as well
..I would be surprised if our coaches didn't at least send some feelers that way.
Makes me think maybe he's just got a different mindset because I am sure several P5 took notice of a guy averaging 15+ tackles/game.
I'd love to see him @ VT but my sense is that it's not likely and we probably already know it.
ODU becoming our de facto AAA team and I'm all for it.
this is actually pretty genius...work together with ODU (maybe JMU too?) to blanket recruit VA and then let the cream rise to the top

Henderson made the AP mid-season All-American first team as a linebacker

OT but my Transfer Portal wants in order of perceived need: LB (specifically Mike), OL (all positions), DT (need 2 I would assume)
Technically he can play 4 games this year and still redshirt right?
Good point, he can still play in 2 games and take a redshirt.

Google it
I thought all that applied, but only if you don't go to VA Tech...
(This is freaking hilarious by the way)

Yeah, I think the "5 years to play 4" is pretty much out the window these days.
That being said, the NCAA will probably fuck us over anyway.
umm officially... Redshirt, Covid, 4 real years, graduate transfer... that's 6 right there without injury. It's a fucking joke.
Didn't one of the Wang brothers stick around for like 6 seasons, pre covid, because of a medical redshirt? Add then his younger brother David came in to play so, we had big ol Wangs on the OLine for a stretch of like 11 consecutive seasons, right?
We could sure use some big ol' Wangs.
Pause.
grad transfer doesn't give you more eligibility
?? What about Justyn Mutts? who could have come back for a 7th year if he wanted.
Mutts did not have any more eligibility. you may be remembering when he entered the '22 draft with Aluma while maintaining his eligibility to come back for his final year of college ball in 22-23, which he did.

Going to miss seeing this.
You can always have Dickel for Nickel
I hope Nickel plays as hard as Dickel tastes.
so in Mutts case it was 6 to play 5.
Yes, in the case of literally everyone who was eligible in 2020. Again, 2020 did not count towards eligibility
Just saw Tyrece Radford...who enrolled at VT in 2018- is representing Texas AM at media day this year and will play in 2024.
18-19: enrolled at vt, redshirted, did not use any eligibility
19-20: played at vt, first year of eligibility used
20-21: played at vt, covid year, no eligibility used
21-22: grad transferred to aTm, immediately eligible, played, second year of eligibility used

I have laughed at more off the wall shit in this single thread... Thanks y'all - never change.
