Surprise post-practice media availability. I looked at the schedule on hokiesports this week and didn't see anything football-related until 10/23, so I didn't expect to get this youtube notification.
- Competitive period today with redzone, angle tackle drill and pass rush drill. Camp feeling to get the guys going.
- Scrimmage work today and yesterday for younger players. Keeping it vanilla and seeing who can execute and how their speed is with a game feel.
- Sounds like Lovett had an interception along the sideline. I think this was during the competitive period.
- Tralon Mitchell looking good in practice. Having good runs, but Pry says that he and Coney both have "position flexibility"
- Equal amount of time on Syracuse as on scrimmages. 2 segments of ST today and yesterday.
- Saturday will be Syracuse Monday.
- Wells throwing the ball well. 75% with footwork. Mobile enough to protect himself, but not to make a play with his feet.
Injury updates
- Lawson in precautionary no-contact jersey.
- Kyle Lowe looking good, working through shoulder pain.
- Strong not dressed for rest, but doing well.

I may be reading too much into it but Pry's face when asked about Wells says he wish the reporters would stop asking about him lol
I just want him to say that Drones is the starter for the rest of the season (barring any unforeseen circumstances).
Maybe he's said this and I missed it? Seems like he keeps saying 'Drones is the guy for now,' and I just want him to drop the 'for now' and make it clear that the competition is over.
Idk maybe I'm over analyzing this and I should be shamed by MBG, but it seems like he's dodging the question.
The closest he's come is dropping the 'or' designation on the depth chart last week, but he's also said that the depth chart doesn't mean much so... π€·
Okay, good to know I'm not crazy.
Here's what Pry could say: "Kyron has earned the starting job for the foreseeable future. Grant's knowledge and experience has been and will continue to be indispensable. We're appreciative of everything he's given this program, and we're very fortunate to have someone as experienced as Grant to challenge and mentor Kyron, Pop, and the rest of the qb room."
When it comes to player personnel, Pry has not been willing to make such statements. He has taken the mantra you play for your spot every week pretty seriously, and I think that's why he doesn't make such statements. TBF, it does not seem to have affected Drones play yet, and I always think actions (e.g., who is getting the reps with the 1s) speak louder than words at a press conference.
I dont care what he tells the press and fans, as long as the plays are okay with what is internally communicated then that is all that matters on the who's starting topic.
It also could be that he knows Wells better than we do and knows that if he outright said that he had lost the job that Wells is not going to work as hard or be ready if he is needed. I am not saying this is fact. But maybe he wants to keep Wells engaged.
He did it.
"There's no question this is Kyron's offense right now."
Full breakdown will come this afternoon, today's presser was on the longer side and dense, so I couldn't get through it at lunch.
DCunna tweeted that Pop wasn't at practice. Has there been any additional information on that?
Something going on with Pop. Primarily is that he is a project at QB at best and Drones has 2 years eligibility left. This is 2023. Pop is likely going to transfer to a place with a better chance to play QB.
Maybe. He also might have been in class. I know guys are impatient these days, but I'm not worried either way. A guy like Pop could certainly use some time to get ready physically and mentally. If he doesn't want to do that here than so be it. If he does go it won't be for a P5 gig.
Are you seriously suggesting that he was in class instead of at practice? Pretty sure that's not how it works at the FBS level.
Certainly not for the starters, but a lot of players who don't play and don't want to go to practice intentionally schedule classes during practice so they don't have to go. At least that is how it worked pretty recently.
Are these the same players that were intentionally trying to lose to avoid playing in a bowl game? If anyone has that mindset they need to be escorted to the transfer portal immediately. Athletes get first choice at classes at VT to avoid missing practice
It is how it works sometimes occasionally... and unfortunately...
I hope he sticks around. As I understand it, with Wells injured, he's QB #2 right now, which means he's one twisted ankle away from being our starting QB.
Thank you for continuing to post and summarize these pressers.
I don't know why, but the 90s kid in me feels like the bye week presser should end with operaman.
I know we are trying to move past the Fuente era but it is still just refreshing to get engagement. He didn't give anything away but gave real answers to questions. In the grand scheme of college football coach paranoia does it really matter if the other team knows that they worked red zone, angle tacke and pass ruch drills - no, but it sure makes me more informed and engaged as a fan.
