I'd love to see a back-to-back Army-Navy contest one day.
Maybe it's because Army isn't in my vicinity, and maybe it's because they are lower level FBS and don't move the needle much, but darnit it seems like these level of teams can maneuver in the landscape easily with "football only" moves that truly makes me jealous for all the other sports at VT.
I'm not sure it's something to be jealous of; a lot of these teams/conferences do it out of necessity. Some random thoughts about this:
To your second point. All you have to do is 1. offer to play 4-6 football games of your choosing each year with conference teams. 2. Add your perceived weight to the camping world bowl negotiations. If you do those 2 simple things, you can find arguably the best olympic conference for your other teams.
I just wish that football would form their own conferences. That money can still benefit the remaining sports. But there is ZERO reason for volleyball or wrestling form BC to travel to Miami or now Cal for a match. These sports should be regional. Football can have their own meg-conferences and travel away. Dragging the rest of the sports along with them is silly.
I agree, and I think it's inevitable tbh
So random question? Do Army, Navy and Air Force have to deal with Title IX scholarships for sports? Historically I think attendance at those schools is about 90% male. Do they have any actual scholarship money for sports or is it covered by the Army, Navy, or Air Force due to their service requirements?
They don't have to deal with scholarships at all for sports, since every student at the academies are on full scholarships.
Additionally, all students are required to participate in athletics.
I actually did not know that. What if you are in good shape (well you have to be to get in anyway) but have never really played a sport? Do they just find a spot on the track team or something? I'm sure most appointees most likely participated in a team sport of some kind in high school so probably not a big issue to find something for them to do.

Lots of options.
"Sir we need something for the non-athletic people"
No problem - Orienteering- competitively find where you are and where you're going.
Oh God, I would be terrible at this. I have no idea what direction is which once I enter a building, I lived in SLC for 3 months and never figured it out, and I frequently turn out of parking lots the wrong direction. Something is definitely wrong with my hippocampus.
FTFY
Where'd that dad joke thread go anyways
Don't they all have to do that as part of the Army training anyway?
Pretty sure they count club sports and intramurals. Even at the Chesapeake University of Naval Technology, not everyone is an athlete
I may be wrong here, but didn't notre dame join the ACC as football only, at least initially? I'm not sure if they are in the ACC for different sports now, but then maybe you aren't counting the ACC as one of the "top conferences."
No- never joined for football initially. They only played "acc" football during covid
Nope, ND is everything but football. The opposite of football only.
It's hard to remain an independent in college sports, unless you're Notre Dame.
They tried this once with Conference USA and could not compete. Good luck Army.
So theoretically they could end up playing three times in a season then? Unless the conference never schedules them as part of round-Robin scheduling.
In-season game..
Annual Army-Navy Game...
AAC Conference championship...
Why can't the annual Army-Navy game become a required end-of-season rivalry game in conference play? Is it because the AAC only does round-robin?
Found this from last year (https://meangreensports.com/news/2022/11/9/football-the-american-announc...). If the format stays they could either give Army-Navy another annual game, or scrap the Navy-Temple annual match-up.
More likely because their TV revenues are a lot higher for that weekend because there is a lot less competition.
Because the Army v Navy game is so late in the schedule. American Conference regular season has to be over and participants in Championship game decided
Given that, couldn't, theoretically, they play regular season, then the conf championship game, then the annual match, in that order?
and I think that theoretical number is 4
- Annual conference game
- Annual Army-Navy
- Conference championship
- CFP matchup, which would be an insanely improbable occurrence
At first I thought this said 'Army to the ACC' and I thought to myself "yeah.... that tracks"
It would have made more geographic sense than the last few additions...
