Virginia Tech 63 vs Arkansas State 7
August 25, 2002

While the Hokies levied a massive beatdown of Arkansas State, this game featured James Hickenbothem, who I scrimmaged against when EHC traveled to Fork Union to play their post-grad team. He was their best offensive player against us despite that team having UVA receiver Billy McMullen.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Very first defensive play of the game for the Hokies- No. 95 Jim Davis spills inside hard on the iso. Number 45 MIKE linebacker Mikal Baaque fits into the gap outside Davis to take on the iso. WHIP Brandon Manning (No. 48) sets the edge by spilling the running back (taking on the pulling guard with the inside shoulder), spilling the back to the alley defender, corner DeAngelo Hall. Instead of spilling right into Hall for a TFL, the back follows his fullback into the bubble where Baaque fit, and finds zero room. That is how linebacker fits are supposed to look.

And Kevin Jones makes the tackle off a booming Vinnie Burns punt. Good times.

Great HS Running Back, even better dude that James Hickenbothem. It was my privilege to block for him for 20 consecutive games. He now coaches football and track in Georgia.

The Hokies took a 35-0 lead into the 2nd quarter in that game...

This was my first Hokie game ever - my dad brought me up for official and unofficial campus tours, to watch the New Cadet Pass-In-Review, and then see the game in Lane.

Obviously, it worked. The in-state schools never really stood a chance once I got accepted.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

My first game too and I was a New Cadet in that pass in review.

Same! My dad is from England so he always told me growing up that university sports weren't worth following (they arent big in the UK). After this game, my freshman year, we were both hooked and got season tickets the next year and have been big fans ever since. Ahh the good ole days of massacring opponents we should massacre.

"They blocked seven kicks least year..."

I remember when we use to do that regularly.

I was at this one, great fun

MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Even having lived through this period - those player pictures look like mug shots.

Also first game in lane for 87 years? Were they playing somewhere else? (I didn't know about vt till like 2004, sue me)

I'm still figuring this out.

I came back here to ask the same question. I don't understand what he was trying to convey.

This was my first game as a freshman. What a fun (for the most part) 5 year run during my undergrad.

Jesus Christ.

We got our 6th First Down in the 2nd Quarter....after having already scored 5 touchdowns.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I'm impressed with how many time we threw on first down.

This was the first VT game that I ever attended. First game of my freshman year.

Hey I was at that game! I remember thinking Rouse had murdered the Wake kid on the field lol.

Damn that was a nasty defensive squad.

I think this is the Ryan Williams drag the defender into the end zone play? Easily my favorite Hokie football clip.

EDIT: It is not! Still my favorite clip

Maybe the Jayron Hosely 2 (3?) INT game

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I was thinking that awesome Ryan Williams dragging the defender in the end zone play was against Maryland

Thanks - great correction. Williams is my favorite VT running back to watch of all time, so I should have known that. So then it was a Maryland player who got trucked by Darren Evans that time. I loved how Evans only fell forward, ever.

I was at that game. First stadium where I ever saw the crowd leave at halftime to go drink more before coming back in for the second half.

Such a comeback win.

2003 Virginia Tech 31-Miami 7

One that often gets brought up as many folks best VT football memory, although for me, it burns me that the team had so much talent and fell apart.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

This is my first real VT game memory. 11 years old with my Dad. First game I went to that I actually understood what was happening versus just watching the game clock reach 00:00.

Definitely bittersweet...we dominated (defensively at least) the best team on our schedule all year.

Sadly, it was also probably the last good game we played all year.

2003 and 2005, probably the most BCS-worthy VT teams ever and both just kinda fell apart down the stretch.

After we came so close in 1999, the culture on the team and around campus had an attitude of, if we can't play for the championship, why bother to play? So after we lost to unranked WVU as #3, we beat Miami, but then shit the bed against Pitt at Heinz Field with College GameDay there. After that they phoned it in hard.

2005 was a different story. They kept fighting hard, but fucking Bobby Bowden and the Semenholes eeked out a win in Jacksonville.

if Marcus Vick had been able to behave for one single fucking second, we'd be talking about 2006 right up there with these teams too

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

if Marcus Vick had been able to behave for one single fucking second

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

it proved to be too big an if, I know.

It's hard not to think about how far that team would've gone with him at the helm, though. Bud's best defense with The Passing Vick throwing to that super good, super deep mid-2000s WR corps? The possibilities are endless

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Marcus Vick, and the rest of the team, keeping out of trouble is the biggest what if of VT football. 2006 would have been a championship. Both losses had starters suspended.

Yep. He was not ever going to listen or behave.

If he had been pulling for himself half as much as the fans (including myself) were pulling for him, he would have collected some nice paychecks in the league.

This game my freshman year is where I took in my sign that said, "You will see this game, this upset and this sign, next on ESPN Sportscenter"

I got several verifications that it showed up on some highlight reels.

Probably the best sign I ever made.

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

I've never watched this game before. Might have to one day.

Loved the failed fake FG.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Also, we didn't complete a pass until a 2 yard loss on a FB screen with 2:32 to go in the 3rd quarter.

And then the 46 yard TD pass to Wilford being the only pass completion of the game that went for positive yardage with 34 seconds to go in the 3rd, already up 24-0

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I was curious to see the talent disparity among the teams from this game (I'm not sure which season Miami peaked, but I believe their 2001 roster might have been the most successful football roster ever assembled in terms of NFL production). I went through both the entire 2003 rosters and the starters for this game.

We did boast the highest overall rated recruit in Kevin Jones from 2001 (DJ Williams was the 2nd rated recruit a year earlier). Miami's average starter out of high school was rated ~93.

We also trotted out 4 unranked players (2-stars as recruits) and 4 more walk-ons as starters. We won decisively.

If I had the skills or time (I have neither), I might look at the matchups in that game (RT vs LDE, CB1 vs WR1, etc.) and see if we had a higher-rated recruit in ANY of them. If we have more than two, I'd be surprised.

That Miami team was so stacked.

Edit: I was thinking the comment I replied to was about the 2001 team, it was not. That 2001 team was even more stacked than this one. My comment still stands, though. I'd be surprised if we had more than two higher-rated recruit matchups.

1995 Sugar Bowl- Virginia Tech 28- Texas 10

Remember being in the upper end zone for this one. Great view of Still on the punt return.

I remember this one fondly... was at the game (way up in the upper section). I remember singing/walking with Hokie Fans from the stadium to Bourbon Street and noticing it was almost midnight. I yelled out does anybody have a cigar (for some reason that was important to me in my inebriated state) and somebody ran over and handed me one. A little while later we enjoyed some frequent scrapping with pissed of Texas fans (they were all bark and no bite I came to find out).

Another great game from the 2010 year. I made it to every game except Miami that year. Man I was tired after all the travel that fall to keep up with the team.

In 2016, I made every game except Syracuse (glad I missed that one). Traveled to Bristol, South Bend, Durham, Chapel Hill, Pittsburgh, Orlando (Acc champ close loss against Clemson, and Charlotte (Belk Bowl comeback win against Arkansas), Great year!

From the 2018 VT-uva game-"This is when LEGENDS are made!"

Thanks for posting this. I was at this game. Championships are sweet.

Danny Coale torched that FSU secondary. FSU fans were livid. He's still open.

All year, JGW had been a liability. I left to piss in early in the first quarter, came back, and we had scored. I asked my friends how we scored, and they said JGW got a pick-6. I didn't believe them. Thought they were fucking with me. Saw the highlights the next day and learned they weren't lol.

In defense of JGW, he grew into a solid player, and returned to the staff. I'm sorry I ever doubted you, JGW.

It was a great night in Charlotte!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Took until 5:30 remaining in the 3rd before someone on the broadcast brought up Boykin's hand size.

I miss that RB room.

I know it's a rule but how is Danny always THAT open?

I'm still figuring this out.

I'm can't believe we had David Wilson, Darren Evans, and Ryan MF Williams on the same team. Plus Tyrod under center.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

and lost to JMU

Boggles the mind.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

What boggles the mind is 4th and 1 in the rain with arguably thr best backfield assembled since the 40s and you pass the ball.

Not like they had any success running the ball that day either...

Also, didn't Darren Evans fumble on the JMU 10
or so to end the game?

Danny Coale is still open

This 31-7 beatdown W snapped a two-game losing skid to the Boohoos(!) in 1999. Features one of my favorite-ever catches on Tech's first score, a fantastic fingertip snag by Andre Davis.

The void left by hokietapes is ever so slowly being filled, but there were two games even he didn't have that I would KILL for: the 2000 contests against Rutgers and Boston College (esp the BC game, it blows my mind that no one seems to have kept a full copy of the game MV7 made his famous 82 yard dash in, it was nationally broadcast). Please if anyone here or anywhere has those games, drop me a line or post them to YT, haha.

2011 VT vs Georgia Tech. Really competitive game. VT starts off strong. GT slowly chips away at the lead, and after a score, a stop, and score, takes the momentum. Then, after nearly pulling out another stop, a GT defender is unable to bring down Logan Thomas, and throws a punch in frustration. A personal foul (and the corresponding 15 yard penalty) is awarded. Momentum swings instantly, and VT wins after a decisive 4th quarter performance.

I never understand what goes through a players head when they throw a punch at a guy wearing a freaking football helmet, unless that thought is: how could I break a finger and screw my team over at the same time?

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

My wife and I went to this game, it's a top 3 all time sports moment in my lifetime

road tripped down for this one. Ended up in a miami section and spent the whole game being screwed with (plastic beer bottles thrown at us, people trying to steal our stuff, fans making racist and sexist comments towards some girls with us). At the end of the game a security staff came up and told us to wait til the stadium cleared out to leave so we wouldn't get assaulted in the mass of pissed miami fans streaming out of the stadium. She waited til our section was empty and walked us out, which was nice. Also, our Dline just deciding that the miami's last drive wouldn't go anywhere was glorious to behold in person.

Ah, so much fun (yes, including The Stomp, it was a perfect on-brand heel move by one of the all time heels of college football).

Hokies shut out WVU in Morgantown 27-0, 1995. If Dwayne Thomas or Ken Oxendine were playing today, they would probably play linebackers because guys like that rarely seem to stick with RB in college anymore.

Ah yes, my freshman year. I remember this one well. Started 0-2 then ran the table.

Also my freshman year. I grew up a Mountaineer fan in southern WV, but chose Tech for computer science and proximity to home. Planned on staying a Mountaineer fan but this game turned me. The Hokies put a beat down on the Mountaineers that day. It was over by halftime and we were getting hailed on in the stands so we left early. I still root for the Mountaineers in other games (especially against Pitt), but the Hokies are my team.

That was my first football game. Our high school drum line was visiting with the WVU drum line and they snuck us into the game.

Hokies win over Nebraska in Lincoln. Don't watch this if you like good offensive line play.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Ugh...Curt Newsome....we probably don't land Tyrod Taylor without adding him to Staff but he was an absolutely awful OL coach.

Those 2007-2008 teams had tremendous defenses and tons of talent on O (particularly in 2007), with competent OL play they both could have been top-5 teams.

Why I would trade tyrod for anything, in the alternate timeline of not getting tyrod we get Russell Wilson, so that's not bad.

It's sort of amazing that we were good, at all, in 2008. It's one of my favorite seasons as a fan, despite being our weakest team during the 10 win season streak.

We lost almost the entire defense, all of our meaningful offensive skill players, and all were replaced by vets who waited their turn and freshmen.

Much better coaching in 2008 than we have had the past 6 years. No comparison

November 24, 1990 - #17 Virginia @ Virginia Tech

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Wow that intro is dated. I was at that game. The administration had given all the student tickets to UVA because it was Thanksgiving weekend. The students made a huge stink and the administration erected temporary bleachers behind the endzone and sold those tickets to the students. I managed to get one and when we won that game, I was helping to to carry an upright through the tunnel after we tore the goal posts down.

You bet it's dated. That game is 23 years ago.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Out of curiosity I pulled up the recruiting numbers for those two teams. I looked for everybody accumulating stats per the Hokiesports recap (unfortunately I don't have any OL data, other than recognizing Jim Pyne).

UVa was still building to their peak years (their best ever class was 2002), although they were playing with the #1 overall recruit in the nation from 1989 in Terry Kirby. (I included Shawn Moore even though he was out for this game).

Virginia Tech, meanwhile had started the 1980's as essentially a mid-major independent, and had essentially bottomed out (talent-wise) from the Dooley sanctions. We had a lot more Walk-ons contributing in this game, and unrated recruits in general (2-stars). Our top rated recruit (Quarterback Chris Baucia) only ever contributed to punting duties in Blacksburg. As always during the Frank Beamer years, Prep school representation was prevalent on this team.

Bernard Basham was our third-highest rated (Third highest-rated? Third-highest-rated? How do hyphens work there?) recruit that year. Near the top of the all-name team for VT football history. How did we ever let his nephew Boogie Basham go to Wake? /sigh

Any DE that size and with basketball movement skills should be a high priority target, regardless of whether or not they are the nephew of BERNARD FREAKING BASHAM!

See name - one of my favorite childhood moments as my Dad and I stayed until seemingly everyone left and watched the students tear down the goal posts.

Pretty sure a freshman Maurice Deshazo was on the top of the goal posts celebrating.

Wide tackle 6 defense lol

I been here since day 0.

A bud of mine (JR) and I carried the VT flag after the second touchdown, back when they used to let VTCC/HT members run the flag. Okay, I mainly remember holding one hand on the pole with my other hand signalling #1 while my bud did most of the carrying. That thing is a lot heavier than you think it is.

I had a ticket to the 1986 UVA game in Blacksburg shortly after I graduated. I had to drive my younger brother back to Ferrum College on Friday night after showing him around Blacksburg all day. On the drive back to Blacksburg, I was about halfway to Roanoke from Ferrum and hit some gravel on the shoulder of a narrow road going around a curve, spun out and ended up in the ditch with my little Mustang halfway flipped over. I sat at the tow truck's service station listening to the game on the car's radio instead of attending. Would love to finally view the game if anyone could pull the video. I know it was a long time ago, but it was one of the great beatdowns of that season when we won the Peach Bowl which I was able to attend with the future Mrs. Chachi.
