Yesterday Blacksburg PD and VT campus PD responded to a suspicious persons call and found a car with two victims of gunshot wounds dead on arrival. It turns out they were Blacksburg High School students current information is that a female student was killed by the other person and then they killed themselves.
If you have students at Blacksburg High or at Tech please check on them. If you have kids who are dating age please talk to them about partner violence, stalking or harassment.

That's horrible.
Also, was the other person a male? Are police withholding that information at this point? I had to read this like three times before I realized it wasn't a suicide pact where "they (both) killed themselves"
There are no official details. The girl's mother posted on Facebook confirming her identity and to say she was killed by an ex-boyfriend. That's really the extent of the public information now.
Sucks on so many levels. Too many kids just don't think. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. And the murder is much worse.
Comfort to the families.
Dude, somehow the racists and trolls picked up on this story and are spewing absolutely horribly hateful comments at the father on twitter. Gabe Williams, one of our recruits, showed support with the father and now the trolls and racists are coming after him too. WTF. This is why I only look at VT Twitter. That app is gross for allowing that behavior (ahem, ELON)
It's not twitter man, it's just the internet. Roanoke Times (I think - not positive) posted an article, and the comments were absolutely hateful.
Oh yeah, local news comment sections are often worse than FB and twitter combined
I'd say this is worse though. They are tweeting directly at the father of the victim. People on the internet have always shown the worst versions of themselves but the ability to publicly reach specific people like this with the type of things they are saying is uniquely awful
edit: maybe even worse is the fact that when reported, whoever it is that handles reviewing these comments replied that they didn't break any community guidelines and therefore will not be removed or censored
I read somewhere recently that the guy who was hired by Facebook to create a bunch of controls to prevent bullying, and left the company in 2015, returned in 2019 to find that all of the work that his team had done basically had been abandoned.
The worst is probably what happened in Myanmar when they rolled out Facebook there and only had one content moderator who spoke one of the languages (they speak several different languages there) it will make your blood boil. Here is a LINK to the story.
Meta has gone above and beyond in the control measures since then. Try saying something like "HokieFlyGuy is crazy" on Facebook. Your comment will be flagged, removed and you'll be up for a one week ban.
The comment sections on any place on the internet is generally an awful place.
WSJ broke the story last week or the week before. It was on their front page. Fwiw (not much at all), Meta disputes it saying that was a mischaracterization of what happened (shocker).
If your organization has ever been covered in a newspaper, you understand that the news printed in newspapers may or may not resemble what actually happened.
But your disclaimers indicate that you're aware of that.
Yea exactly. As some who is a product manager for compliance/privacy tech, I like to think that I have an understanding of how these features are built, evaluated, and maintain.
Businesses rarely just 'turn off' well used features. Even more unlikely that the code is all together removed.
But regardless, I don't doubt that meta is ignoring the mental health issues that Instagram causes.
When I was still in academia teaching undergrads - especially the class on [Edit:
BiochemIntroduction to the Life Sciences] for non-majors - I used to tell my students:Any time you read, see or hear anything in the mainstream media about science, take it with a grain of salt.
Any time you read, see or hear anything in the mainstream media about cancer, take it with a pound of salt.
Any time you read, see or hear anything in the mainstream media about something causing cancer, just assume that it is false.
Are you saying I'm drinking a gallon of wine daily for no reason?
If it's something like a nice Riesling or Gewürztraminer, you don't need any other reason beyond enjoying the good things in life to take that!
I probably wouldn't say "no reason", but if the reason is that the media told you to, that's probably not the best one.
To quote Johnny Carson regarding things causing cancer: "Yeah, and if you pump a gallon of milk into a mouse, it bursts."
Peanut Butter is a known carcinogen. Life causes cancer. Just a fact of life.
100%. Aflatoxin in peanut butter is one of the examples I give people.
We covered it back in Environmental Engineering at Tech back in the 90's. That little fact might be one of the few things I remembered about the class other than hating the professor after a test.
As someone who literally just about LIVES on Skippy Creamy peanut butter (I go through a three pound jar in about 2-3 days on average), I guess I just like to "live on the edge"!(Doing the math, I'd estimate I've had 2.5-3 TONS OF PEANUT BUTTER IN MY LIFE).
Found a GIF of you online
Just hope it's not this one...

While I will admit to (once in a while) dipping fingers (or as a kid my whole hand) in the peanut butter jar, I have never and will never slather myself in it lol! By itself, on Premium Saltines, or on white bread/toast (toast is the best especially when the peanut butter melts a bit...mmmm!)
Username checks out.
Accurate Username then.
Let's see 3 pounds every 2.5 days = 438.3 lbs per year
Class of 1988 puts you at 35 years since graduation, so since graduation that would be about 15,340.5 lbs or slightly more than 7.5 tons.
You've eaten a large elephant's worth of peanut butter in 35 years.
This is that good, good, TKP shit.
OK- I admit my math as off but then again using your calculations the 'tonnage would be closer to 7.7 tons (15340/2000=7.67) (or if you use 'metric tons' then 15340/2200= 6.97) and since I ate a lot as a kid albeit slightly less per day, you can probably add another 2-2.5 tons to that figure- so let's round that to about ten tons.
Things that weigh ten tons:
The Grand Slam Bomb from WW2
The Anchor of a Cruise Ship
Light Military Tanks-from WW2 era
The African Bush Elephant- usually 6-7 tons but a few reachedten
Saltasaurus (a titanosaurid sauropod dinosaur characterized by its short neck and stubby limbs.
(It was the first sauropod known to have bone armor embedded in its skin.))
An Empty Coach(intercity bus)
The Smallest Mobile Crane
20 Concert Grand Pianos
and last but not least.....
the amount of salt Pat Narduzzi has spewed in all the post game pressers in his nine or so years at Pitt!!
10 tons would be on the low end of the estimate for this one lol.
I appreciate the research effort that went into setting up that closing dunk.
That is an absurd amount of peanut butter.
God bless your toilets, they've been working overtime for years
He needs to install the cyclone speed toilets' like they have in the Vegas casinos to deal with what must go on at his house.
Honestly not to get specific, but I have no issues- neither too much nor too often (nor the inverse of either). I know others with far more issues than I'll ever have.
Ever is a long time.
But in fairness, it is amazing how adaptable the human body can be.
That much daily peanut butter would provide a good amount of fiber so he's probably ahead of the curve in that regard.
Also zero cholesterol in it -not that that has anything to do with digestive stuff just general health related. It's vegetable fat not animal fat, lots of protein,. Yes it has fair amount of sodium(I DO love salt!), and sugr too(tough my A1C is 5.1. And I don't eat much desserts or chocolate at all.
Overall I think if you're going to obsess on ONE food , peanut butter isn't a bad one to do so. I'm not advocating as a diet for anyone else, but it seems to work for me! I've only met MAYBE 1 or 2 people during my life who eat as much as I do of it.
Your username is Skippy Peanut Butter Man I assume? I would say you may be in a league of your own.
This is so funny to me for some reason. You are literally life long committed to your peanut butter. Do you like other foods as well or are you very picky? Will other brands do in a pinch?
ugggh I had a long reply typed out but when I went to submit it, the system had logged me out of the site somehow and I lost it. I'll re do that reply later but briefly ...NO! no other brand will do!
OK as promised:
I do eat other foods...on occasion. I DON'T eat leftovers if I'm by myself. And I NEVER get tired of peanut butter plus it is inexpensive and easy to make sandwiches/toast.
I like most meats(ham, turkey, roast beef, steak, hot dogs etc..-but NOT organ meats; and not in sandwiches; and no sauces or gravies; and no spices/seasonings other than salt; and only baked or broiled or grilled- not fried (except deep fried turkey which I had last year at a friend's house and was amazingly moist and tasty- only time I went for seconds.
I don't eat ANY cooked vegetables ; raw I like carrots, cucumbers, iceberg lettuce is "ok", celery I tolerate, and tomatoes (though those are actually fruit); exception to the cooked veggies is baked potato(plain no butter or anything) and french fries (but must be soft not crispy(think old style McD fries-but they've not been great since pre-Covid)-the bar I play pool at has a special button on their register for "insert my name' fries)
Fruits- I like bananas(should have slight tinge of green still), white/green seedless grapes, apples (must be crisp), oranges/tangerines, pears, peaches; nothing exotic and no melons
No cheese or yoghurt or other dairy like cottage cheese.... but milk is fine
No pasta or pizza
No ethnic foods(Mexican/Italian/Asian/Indian/etc.)
Snacks- I like regular Fritos (though in a pinch Scoops will do)- no other flavored Fritos; pretzels(preferably Snyders and of those preferably Minis though will do full size ones that are same shape as minis and also sticks; other brands "ok" but not preferred; not roods; not the kind you get at state fair/theater/amusement parks; no other snacky stuff(e.g. potato chips/tortilla chips, etc.)
no condiments- except salt(no ketchup/mustard/mayo/sugar/etc.)
Soda- prefer Coke(regular of course-and in a perfect world the kind still using cane sugar not corn syrup but not gonna pay the high cost of Mexican coke to get it); will drink Pepsi if Coke not available but not other colas or Dr Pepper; ginger ale and sprite ok and Orange soda(Fanta/Nehi) and lemonade.
No desserts EXCEPT vanilla ice cream, vanilla wafers(preferably soft), and vanilla frosting(straight out of the can or bowl); no chocolate other than chocolate milk
No hot liquids (e.g. soup, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, etc.)
As far as alcohol- beer-mostly simpler ones like American bud light, michelob, stella artois etc) not IPA/strong flavors; wine- no dark reds; some zinfandel or pinots- again- no strong tastes and I mostly only drink wine if it's the only alcohol available; liquor- mostly shots/shooters or mixed drinks (I'm definitely not a sipping liquor person).
Basically I prefer relatively bland tastes. Always been a picky eater but I almost severed my tongue (almost biting it off) when I was eight years old and I'm honestly not sure I taste things the same as others do. Also texture affects how I eat too- stuff like tofu or cottage cheese just gives me the willies,
I don't try to recommend my diet but it works for me. And I will never demand going to a particular restaurant -I let others pick a place and I'll find something(even if it's just french fries or vanilla ice cream and a beer/drink or even JUST a drink) ; I'm there for the company not the food. And when I go to someone's house I don't expect them to cater to me. I will always bring peanut butter and white bread with me so I have something to eat regardless
Am I unique? Am I 'weird' (or more politely 'eccentric')? ABSOLUTELY and I own that with no shame.
Truly fascinating. I love a peanut butter on wonder bread sandwich- no jelly even- although I don't mind jelly. I couldn't do your diet because carbs make me 1 million pounds. I have had to really watch that recently- I try really hard not to eat- burgers on buns, subs, pizza, flour tacos, chips, pretzels, and of course shit like donuts, ice cream, candy etc. The hardest part by far for me is having to drink shitty beer. Like Mic Ultra or miller lite. A good ipa has up to 25 carbs in it- yes- so that doesn't work if you are like me trying to lose weight. So at this point I have to watch the hokies eating wings or brats/burgers no buns and drink Mic Ultra or Slighty Mighty etc. I love bourbon too- but more than 2 glasses of that, the body turns it to sugar. Getting old and having shitty genes sucks.
I put an extra serving of PB on my PB sandwiches in place of the jelly because jelly is eww. I will do maple syrup, but you have to eat fast before it soaks through the bread.
Try Honey Nut Cheerios or Nutella with your peanut butter.
cereal on a sandwich sounds interesting. my wife eats pb and honey so I could see how the cherrios would work.
I'm not really a hazelnut kid of person.
It's hazelnut based but taste wise it's chocolate spread in a jar. I know you mentioned above you don't eat much chocolate either. My kids are addicted to Nutella which works for me as it was a staple at home when I was a kid with my dad being stationed in Germany. Our landlords over there after we moved back to the states would ship us Nutella and gummy's on the regular. We lived about 30 minutes from a gummy factory in Germany.
I've never even considered peanut butter and maple before, but now I'm intrigued.
Every morning I eat waffles with PB and Syrup
Jelly for me is a sacrilege that spoils the peanut butter sandwich/toast.... but I don't proselytize- to each their own!
This is awesome. You are an interesting person and I appreciate that!
Thanks! and the odd appetite/diet is only scratching the surface....lol.
The media is the cancer...
I meant more that the median awfulness of your average poster is usually worse on local news sites. People can absolutely say and do awful things no matter the medium
Anonymity + an audience tends to bring out the worst in people. Part of the problem, however, is bots and foreign interests. Focusing on creating discord around race in US social media and online forums is a top priority for certain autocratic nations in advance of next year's presidential election.
Some of the assholes posting this hateful garbage are real assholes, but if you dig a little deeper, many of them clearly aren't real people just sharing their horrible opinions. They just go from conversation to conversation being randomly racist and horrible.
Many aren't even people. Bots created to cause conflict.
I'm dubious of this. I'm sure they exist but I imagine they are heavily outnumbered by actual people
I'm curious as to your rationale for this opinion. If you'll remember during the Elon Twitter takeover fiasco, he had beef with how a large percentage of the user base was actually bots. Now I assume that doesn't mean a majority of overall users, but of controversial posters I'd imagine bots outnumber people trolls. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part and there really are that many assholes in the world.
A lot of them are bots. Not a new problem online, as you alluded to. Musk also doesn't seem to feel inclined to do anything about them, likely because they "drive engagement" or whatever bull crap.
I think the bots exist. I think they exist specifically to rile up real people, tho. There wouldn't be much utility to the bots if they're all just trolling each other. I think for every bot there are probably at least 1000 real people who are just assholes
Also, some asshole had to create the bot...
How many comments can a bot generate in 24 hours? One bot to create new accounts. One bot for each account to find posts to comment on, all fed by an AI bot to make multiple comments on the same theme from different accounts to every post each of the bots find, all on one computer. Guessing it posts more comments than 1,000's of people in 24 hours.
Yep I noticed a trend around the 2020 election cycle where you'd see some truly awful trends showing when I would wake up in the morning and a little digging showed that it was all being manipulated by thousands of firstnameNumbers accounts spamming the same rhetoric. The Russian and Chinese bot farms absolutely manipulate US discourse on social media and they've been doing it for a lot longer than we want to admit.
The Intelligence Community been extremely open about that fact for years, but the American public is very uncomfortable with having their opinions challenged these days, and to think those opinions are built by the Chinese or Russians is anathema.
Even worse, we kinda wrote the playbook on PSYOPS last century, and it's been well recorded. Adversaries took that playbook and cranked it to 12.
Very similar to dumbdumbs not believing that TikTok is 100% a Chinese collection platform.
All of our local news sites, but mainly WRAL, disabled comments on their stories years ago and its the best thing they've done in a while. The amount of racist hate that was spewed all over the site while those comments were enabled was appalling.
Still have loads of it in the comments on Facebook and Twitter, which is still problematic in and of itself.
I think they should leave comment submissions on, just don't show them on the site. Then you can get a nice list of IP addresses/user names of racist assholes to pass on to relevant authorities/employers, but no one else has to be exposed to their filth.
Oh, that's making an assumption that anything would be done about it.
RATM has been trying to tell us for 30 years.
Ashes in the Fall.
Come to think of it - its an apt description of the end of the Fu era...
What does cricket have to do with this??
Should not have gone out of my way to verify this. Absolutely disgusting.
yeah.....I didn't want to subject people to those comments so I didn't link it. now it lives in your head too, sorry about that
I scrolled through the twitter comments without realizing what I was getting into. It's truly unpleasant. And included several phrases that I haven't googled to avoid ending up on the worst watch lists. Every non-TKP bit of the internet is not good.
