Bitter blog - What does Michael Brewer's transfer mean for VT's QB situation?

When you start making promises like that, it catches up to you as a program (cough ... Philip Sims ... cough), so I'd find it hard to believe that a no-nonsense guy like Loeffler would make any sort of promise to Brewer.

yup

Any chance Leal or Brewer gets moved to tight end?

I was dying laughing when I read this. Well done, AB. (slow clap)

Again, this is a must read.

As I have said in my other reviews, I firmly believe that the coaching staff has not seen anything out of Leal that makes them think he can elevate the players around him next year, hence the quest for a transfer that has some experience just in case a freshman or Motley can't do the job. Ford has a bit of a leg up between the freshmen because he will get to play at ACC speed all spring. I think Durkin may have the most ability to elevate the guys around him with his power and mobility. McMillian is the man in the middle. He is a calming, mechanically sound pocket quarterback who can also run with speed and power in the option game. Each brings unique strengths to the position, and I still think that the starter will not only be "the best player," but he will be the player that Coach Loeffler feels can succeed best given the players around him.

The Hokies known quantities are Trey Edmunds and a short, controlled passing game. Phillips, Ford, Bradshaw, Holland, and Bucky Hodges are unknowns right now, so their ability to stretch the field is a bit of a mystery. The offensive line should be pretty good. The ball is in Loeffler's court and the quarterbacks to see who is the best fit.

The only sure thing is that I doubt we will know who the quarterback will be by the end of spring practice given that Brewer, Durkin, and McMillian won't be available at that point.

"Now, Brewer seems like a smart guy, and he can asses the quarterback situation here as well as anyone."

Andy do you kiss your mother with that mouth??? Nah, but seriously I think you meant assess.

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

You can write something, read it through several times, spellcheck it and still leave your asses just hanging out there.

Dammit.

Fixed. Andy, yours isn't hanging out there any more. Great Article.

I wonder if we'll ever start a QB with the sheer physical gifts and abilities that Logan had, ever again?

Honestly probably not, but the QB position is not all about physical attributes. If it was, LT would be a clear cut #1 draft pick

I don't think Tech will ever have QB that places top 5 in most of the combine drills and is 6'6'' and 260 lbs.

On the other hand, I don't think Tech will ever have a QB who goes 5-26 in a game again.

I agree completely... nothing against LT3 (he showed a lot of heart), but I feel we were more dependent on his physical abilities because we couldn't depend on his accuracy consistently. Give me a Drew Brees and I'll gladly sacrifice the physical gifts...

Minority Report.

This statement says a lot about this QB scenario:

I'd say best-case scenario with Brewer, he wins the starting job and helps get Virginia Tech's offense turned around. Worst-case scenario, he doesn't win the job but still offers a decent insurance policy in case something happens to the starter.

Also, from a point someone else made: When was the last time we had an open real QB competition? It was Glennon vs Tyrod! Wow, that seems ages ago. It was clear that LT3 was taking TTs spot after he completed that 3rd and 16 pass against Miami! No doubt after that rocket 1st down (and hence no real competition)!

What does it mean?
It means we get another new member of Hokie Nation and an even better football team.

Welcome to heaven Mr. Brewer.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I think the biggest indicator will be Leal. If he isn't the clear #1 at the end of spring camp, I'd bet he will transfer. He has graduated and has 1 year left, so I could see him transferring somewhere he could see the field.

I hope he doesn't (and plays out of his mind this spring), but honestly couldn't blame him if he does.

We put the K in Kwality

Not to be argumentative, but if Leal doesn't win the battle here, I can't imagine the transferring anywhere else will work out for him either.

Odds seem really slim for that working out for him.

Big difference between him and Glennon, who I think definitely should have transferred.

He could go to an FCS or D2 school, possibly a non-AQ FBS school and have a good shot at starting.

Anyone know if he's slated to graduate this year? If so, he actually could transfer just like Brewer is doing. I was thinking that he could conceivably end up at a Directional/Geographical Florida school closer to home.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Thought I read on a postseason article (in December) that he was graduating (December). That would mean he's working on his postgrad now.

Also, per above, I was just saying if he announces a transfer at the end of spring, it will give us an indication of the direction (I.e. Brewer is going to be the starter).

We put the K in Kwality

If he isn't the clear #1 at the end of spring camp, then that means either Motley or Ford is the #1. Brewer won't get here until the summer, so for Leal's sake, I hope he's the clear #1 at the end of spring

I hope that after Spring the coaching staff can narrow it down a little bit. Definitely no way it's down to less than 3 of course, but i guess that would at least be on the right track.

I feel like i should be more excited that we have a battle royal for QB coming up!! I think it's just because there are too many QBs to keep track of and no idea who to root for. But you know i'll be yelling for whoever is under center come this fall!!

We root for the performer that can get us the best offense to get back to 10 wins, ACCCG, ACCC, then NCG, and finally the pinnacle...NC!!!
It doesn't matter which one does that - and it could be more than one, just so we get there and they all contribute to that success in some way.

I want to go on record as saying I think Brewer starts this fall

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Uh oh someone's getting ballsy!

Can we have a TKP poll set up to see what the consensus guess is now, then after spring, then at the start of fall?

I'm with you shakeitallabout; I think Brewer starts more games than Leal this fall, but Leal might get the first few starts. Its hard to lose your starting spot when playing W&M (unless of course, LOLUVA)

I read one article that said Brewer was the 13th rated dual threat coming out of HS...then another that said he was the 23rd rated pro style QB.
Which one is he? I know he can run a little but he is definitely small...

I am wondering if French will be breaking down film on Brewer? There can't be much however...

At least he has never thrown an interception at the NCAA level...

VHokie

I've never thrown an interception at the NCAA level either. Put me in, coach!

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Although I've exhausted my eligibility, I went through 4+ years at VT and never threw an interception in a game.

We put the K in Kwality

Neither has Ford, McMillian, Durkin, and Motley.

That means the recruiting services are confused because he can run...but he's white. Someone posted his high school highlight film and he showed plenty of moves. Last spring's Texas Tech spring game film was also posted. He can definitely get the ball out quickly, too.
With regard to size, look at Mike Vick or Tyrod Taylor. They're short guys but have a ton of athleticism.
