Jason Worilds Got Paid

The Steelers named outside linebacker Jason Worilds their transition player, the team announced.

That guarantees Worilds, who wasn't even a full-time starter last year, a one-year deal worth $9.754 million. The franchise tag would have cost $11.455 million.

I'm sure the coaches will be pitching this to their defensive end recruits on the trail.

Does this mean that free agency is done for him? I am not familiar with a "transition player" tag. I thought he was either the franchise player (for more money) or getting a contract.

The link explains it pretty well...

If he is offered a contract by another team the steelers have a chance to match, if they match he is theirs (much like a Restricted Free Agent in the NHL/NBA ect). If they don't match they get no compensation (like they would with a franchise tag-a 1st rounder I believe). If he does not sign a contract with another team he gets $9.75 million.

My question is I thought the steelers were hard up against the cap, if someone offers a good deal do they have room to match?

Also as an Eagles fan I was really hoping Chip would bring him in to help with the 3-4 pass rush.

I would rather see him go the Packers to assist Clay Matthews.

From the comments on this and other articles Steelers fans don't seem too happy.

Not me and my Steelers fan friends. Guys on the defense are either getting old (Troy, Ike, Kiesel) or just never played up to their contract (Woodley). I'm happy we got Worilds on a one year deal, especially with Jarvis Jones still sitting there. If we could get rid of Woodley and start Worilds with Jones I'd be even happier. But worst case scenario is Worilds just had a fluke 8 games last year and we move on after the season. Well done by Colbert.

Rip his freaking head off!

I'm a Steelers fan. I'm hoping this is just stalling for time until they can work out a long term deal.

Well, after the Redskins Franchise tagged Orakpo, the Steelers knew that Worilds was the top available DE/OLB Hybrid rush guy so this allows them to keep him if he doesn't find a better contract that they are unwilling to match without committing quite a few years in case last year was a fluke. Same reasoning I think the Redskins franchised Orakpo. Couldn't really afford to lose him, but his injury history makes handing him a five year deal tough to swallow.

Somebody should alert Ricky DeBerry about this

*Knock *knock *knock. Hello Mr. Worilds, I'm Whit Babcock, and you might have heard I'm looking to increase fundraising for Virginia Tech athletics! The first $ is the easiest!

It could be worse.
