Nice interview, Andy. I have high hopes for the offense as well.

Great interview. It seems the coaches really are high on Bucky. Loefller doesn't really do "coach speak", so the fact that he mentioned Bucky in such high regard is exciting.

Big news story here is that Shai McKenzie is not participating in the spring. So, with Edmunds and McKenzie out, there are carries to be had for Coleman, Mangus, Caleb, and Williams. Who is going to take advantage?

I think Caleb and Williams are going to emerge

It is very interesting that he expected Malleck to catch 60 balls... jeez.

I continue to be amazed with how open SL is with his comments. He's going to have to learn "coach speak" if he ever wants to be a head coach.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly...what did he say that shouldn't be said by a coach? Or a head coach? What specific statements during the interview triggered your comment? I personally didn't see anything wrong with what he said but I'm not an authority on "coach speak". I have no idea what sorts of things get you hired as a head coach. I'm just trying to learn something here.

Onward and upward

I don't disagree with anything he said. As I said it's refreshing to hear an honest appraisal. For example:

SL: "Im sick with how we ran the ball, as well as everyone in this building should be, and every player. Theres a lot of reasons of why it was bad. To put a finger on one thing, one player, one position like if you really assess from running back to line to receiver, perimeter blocking, to quarterback reads, its a D, its a D-minus at all positions. Now, not to be a Negative Nancy here, but the fact of the matter is when you run for 120 yards in college football, cmon. Somethings wrong. And theres a lot of reasons for it.

That is an honest appraisal of the offensive problems. Coach speak would be: "We were just an occasional mistake from being where we want to be. We're are almost where we want to be. One more year of practices in the new system to fix these errors and we will have a strong running game."

Both mean the same thing. SL is refreshing in not sugar-coating the problems. I like it and I think it bodes well for the Tech offense going forward.

Thank you for taking me seriously and trying to answer my question. I still don't fully understand what you originally said though... you didn't say it was refreshing, you said that he wouldn't get a head coaching job if he continued being open like that. Why? I'm sure there are head coaches out there who aren't like Frank Beamer when being interviewed..I'm sure there has to be at least one HC who conducts pretty candid interviews.

Onward and upward

I guess I must have missed those coaches comments. I don't remember ever hearing a coach honestly assess the problems of his team in the press.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Dude...it was a joke.

Coach speak is the art of answering questions so that it appears you are answering when in fact you are simply hearing the same questions you've heard for the past 20 years and you just want the interview to be over. I will attempt my best Beamer to answer some of AB's questions to show the difference:

Hows the offseason? Are you getting more sleep? Boy, I'll tell you that offseason, it'll get after ya'.

Did you have a history with him at all? History, it'll get after ya'.

You've said getting the running game going has to be offseason priority No. 1. How do you go about doing that? Well, that sure is one thing we want to focus on here. That running game, it'll get after ya'.

How much does that help to be back in the same place? uh.. seriously Andy, I've been here for 27 years.. oh, uh... I mean, staff continuity, it'll get after ya'.

Coach speak is very similar to political speak:

You gotta be slip slidin away!

Coach Beamer, you answer all questions with, "It'll get after ya," care to comment? My crafty get after yas, they'll get after ya.

SL lack of coach speak is refreshing. He does not throw individual names out to embarrass anyone, just tells it like it is. Coach speak makes my eyes glaze over.

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

I don't think Lefty lacks coach speak. That's pretty much all he did last season. I think his pattern will be like this: Off-season give open answers without giving too much away. During season: coach speak.

I just think the poor guy finally got a few good night's sleep.
Dude looked like a No-Doz ad for most of the season.

That's really encouraging. As concerned as I am about the QB situation, it's clear that the talent level everywhere else on offense is improved.

At worst, we'll get WR production equal to last years, but likely we will see one or two young kids make a significant difference.

At TE, at worst you will see Kline's production augmented by Malleck. But the enticing chance that Bucky becomes what he can become and the impact of 3TE sets is very exciting.

At OL, losing only one guy, at least we'll be as good as we were last year. And with true high-ceiling players like Teller and Smith ready to contribute, we could be much, much better.

At RB, at worst, you've got JCC and Edmunds doing what they did last year. At best, Shai or Williams really contributes or pushes JCC or Edmunds to be even better.

This doesn't even account for the potential for guys like Mangus, Caleb or Parker to provide some type of unique crossover potential.

We need a game manager at QB and we need Loeffler to figure out what we are truly good at and build his sets around those skills.

With Malleck back and Bucky Hodges blowing things up, do we see Kline redshirt this year? With Redman as a third TE we would still have some experience there and give Kline a year to be Gentrified and practice.

I hope not; get the best players on the field. I know there's a buzz about Bucky, but Kline was developing into a playmaker. Bucky's put nothing on film yet. Given his physical traits, Bucky could be a playmaker in his own right, but I want to see him play this spring before I buy into the hype.

No chance.

Actually glad to hear that. Other than getting tossed around a bit from his size as a freshman, I was very happy with Kline.

Yep, that ship is long gone (unless he gets injured over the summer, of course)

AB: Are you cooking up any three-tight end formations?
SL: "Oh yeah."

What about 4 TE formations...and Sam Rogers at QB?

We have such a history with the TE position too. We used to use them for OL, then DE, then QB, and now, we are using them as TEs, who knew that could work?

Beat me to it.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Reading those responses from Loeffler was just incredibly reassuring.

He sounds like a man with a clear vision for where he wants the offense to be.

Refreshing.

So am I. His excitement has me excited. It's going to really suck losing Logan, but if our run game can get better and we just have a game manager as a qb I think the offense as a whole will get better.

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

After not hearing much from him via the media throughout last season, I've found his candidness and lack of "coachspeak" this offseason refreshing.

I really like lefty going forward for our team. I truey hope we can keep him and the other offensive coaches around for 3-4 yrs. Because if we can something special will happen.

I am so excited that he's on our staff. He impresses me in all of his interviews. I don't expect too much out of the offense once again this season but am excited for 2015 and beyond.

Great job with these interviews, Andy.

Does anybody have any clue whats up with Joel Caleb? I know he hasn't played and there has been talk about him switching to D, but what's the real deal?

Is it possible he seeks a transfer?

I like the fact that Lefty appears to have an honest answer for every question - good, bad, or ugly.

I hear a lot of Saban in the way that he answers his questions with fire and wants perfection. I love the hints about the Stanford Big Guy sets and I love his sleepless attitude towards getting the run game going.

What exactly is a three tight end set? Is that two actual tight ends with a wing back? What do you do in such sets, run plays similar to the single wing?
