Thought he might stay if Tuten left....?

Pry seems to like the RB room. Best of luck to Bryce, he will get some run somewhere.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Wish him all the best.

Hope this means Tuten and Thomas are staying. Best of luck to him though. Seemed like he would have been a contributor down the line.

Yes, let's hope a power SEC school or UNC doesn't need a damn good back and open up the bag for Tuten. We are in a pay for play era now- nothing more. VT will have to pay Tuten more cash to keep him.

Everyone go buy their coffee mugs.

I wish you were wrong, but you are absolutely correct.

I really hate this era.

Wouldn't Tuten have to sit if he transferred now?

Not if he graduates, but I have no idea where he sits academically. I think looking at the NFL is more likely than another transfer though.

(add if applicable) /s

I think he would have trouble in the draft. He had good numbers this year, not great. But another year with a better line next year, he should have great numbers.

Not to mention that the RB position has been downgraded in value for NFL teams over the last several years. Teams have wised up to the fact that a feature back is not really needed as long as you have two good backs that can split the load. The long term contract for RBs is a thing of the past. The shelf life is just too short before the drop off, so if you are in the RB in the NFL you just have to hope you can get one good contract after your initial rookie contract and then that is probably it for you. That being the case, going higher up in the draft is more important than other positions.

VT will have to pay Tuten more cash to keep him.

We beat out UGA to land him. I'd wager his deal is pretty solid already. Keep him happy, and I imagine we're good.

No insider info on this one, so maybe I'm wrong :shrugs:

Are you tempting fate? We can definitely compete NIL wise unless it's a crazy bag. We need to relax thinking we're one of the poverty programs this new setup is going to screw. That's the low P5 and G5, we're high enough up the ladder to benefit

Definitely has talent. He'll make an impact somewhere.

Wonder how much this decision is Duke's own volition and roster management by Pry. Definitely having all those conversations with his players this week.

If he gets in the right system, he will succeed. Hoping he can find that. The speed is there.

Makes sense. Hopefully means we're making room for Tyree.

I thought tyree swutch to wide receiver

I am not real high on Tyree. If the pick was him or Tuten, I'd take Tuten every day and twice on Thursday.

Want him as a depth piece. Would you rather have Duke or Tyree?

If we can have Tuten as the bell cow and Thomas / Tyree sopping up the rest of the carries, I'd be happy. Always worried about RB injuries, can't have too many solid or better backs.

Neither if Thomas and Tuten are returning. They have Comey, who the coaching staff clearly likes. They have the Mason kid from Mount Airy. It makes no sense to have 6 scholarship running backs, especially with the roster restrictions and gaps in other areas.

It isn't a knock on Duke, and Tyree just did not impress me when I saw him play for Notre Dame. And if I am Tyree and I think I am a difference-maker, I am not going somewhere to be a 2 or a 3.

Edit: drink. Shoog beat me to this already.

If neither Thomas and Tuten are returning or neither of Thomas and Tuten are returning. 👀

he wants neither duke nor tyree if tuten + thomas return

Ahh, makes sense.

Nothing like giving yourself a heart attack due to poor reading comprehension.

does tyree even see himself as a running back any more? this thread is all assuming tyree is a RB, but he changed position to WR at ND.

Damn, I was convinced he'd be a dude his Junior year. But, I get it. This is his 2nd year sitting behind entrenched starters and he's staring at a potential 3rd year doing the same if he stayed with us. Coaches have been high on the freshmen we have and I never really heard much talk about Duke so can't say I'm surprised by this. Like all the other transfers, I thank him for his contributions here and hope he balls out. Just not against us

This! Has shown nothing but promise. Has gotten bigger each year and has the vision and speed

Oh, this one is sad

I never got the Bryce Duke hype. I thought he was fine, but his ceiling always seemed to be a Josh Olglesby-level back (ie; an above average back up). Maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Good luck Bryce, once a Hokie always a Hokie!

Probably around 10-15 to go.

yup

That had me a little panicked at first, then I remembered the amount of upperclassmen that couldn't get on the field or didn't contribute this year. 10 would be fine if we found some decent OL, DT, and LBs

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Yeah...I'd suspect at least:
- 2 LB
- another RB
- 1-2 WR
-Given the # of OL Portal offers..2-3 OL
- multiple DB..the writing has to be on the wall for any upperclassmen that didn't see the field this year...with a true Fr. and converted WR ahead of them.

Love the year round effort all players put in, but if you couldn't get on the field with this team this season and you want a shot, you need to look somewhere else. I do truly wish then all well.

Bitter noted 92 scholarships are accounted for if every player that can return does return (inclusive of COVID year super seniors, potential NFL defectors, 2024 commitments, etc.). It's still 7 above the limit. Probably zero to two more 2024 signees and maybe six to eight portal signees does put it about 15 or more portal departures.

I liked his shiftiness and he's got 3 more years, but we have better players so it sucks

This is kindof where I see Gunner Givens. I hope I am wrong.

Maybe Crook can move him over. Everyone seems to think that's his path to success.

Good. We need to maintain the VT-ODU relationship and make them our de facto AAA team.

Just as impotent for VT to have excellent relationships with the VA HS programs, I think building "strategic" relationships with other colleges/universities, due to the portal, is necessary and wise as the "relegating effect" can allow for a more structured, productive and beneficial experience for both programs and the players.

Just a thought that keeps popping into my mind as we see this mass portal up and portal down movement.

Just as what?

Honestly, we're not far away from "loaning" players to G5 schools if football gets unlimited transfers.

"The NFL should have its own paid minor league!"

NCAA: "Watch this, we'll create our own minor league within division 1."

You joke, but I have already seen some talking heads discussing whether or not athletes should legally challenge the NCAA over their 4 year eligibility standards, opening the door for perpetual eligibility.

And that's when I realized the real end game here. The networks are manipulating college football to set it up to challenge the NFL as a pro league.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Why not? I mean "4" eligible years is pretty arbitrary and made up.. right? it's not like its overwhemingly the average time of a college education/degree or anything. Why not have unlimited eligibility when you let Talia Tangoviola use 6 years to play 6? Or McCormick from Miami using 9 to play 8? or countless other examples recently.

My initial take - unless the roster sizes get to expand along with it, then the eligibility timeline needs to remain the same. Increasing the eligibility without a roster size increase now effectively denies graduating HS players the opportunity to play, and will only permit the absolute elite HS players from landing where they want, which will also likely result in more scholarships not being renewed at schools in order to make room for the elite.

There's also a bad look for the universities if its now taking 6+ years on average for athletes to graduate. The schools have an educational reason to have students graduate for their own academic prestige. How that measures-up against the desire to haul in more $$$ from the athletics part all comes down to how business oriented each school is... Decisions will need to be made - are we an academic institution? Or are we a minor league that also plays school?

I don't think eligibility and time it takes to graduate don't any correlation. I think many redshirt seniors and even some juniors had graduated before exhausting their eligibility. Some even obtain advanced degrees.

Hey, you don't have to be an athlete to take 5 years to graduate.
