The Hokies were the last team to be named to a bowl
I'm still seeing a number of bowl games without announced opponents on ESPN.
All matchups have been made, per Wikipedia
UNC probably also throwing a temper tantrum trying to lobby for the Mayo bowl. Word initially was Mayo didn't want them because they played in Charlotte to start the season and know they are going to have a ton of opt outs. Seriously screw UNC.
All I needed to read was "Seriously screw UNC"
But yes, I agree with your post.
Was really hoping to beat the cousins in Charlotte, but also glad we didn"t draw SMU in this one.
VT may finally get that elusive top 25 victory against a G5 team with a departed head coach and likely a depleted roster as I imagine many of their best players will opt for the portal.
If we learned nothing from today it doesn't matter what Tulane accomplished this season - If they have key players missing they should get knocked out of the top 25 because that's how college football works. Amirite?
Apparently not Liberty because "they just kept winning" despite their poor schedule. From same people that claimed winning wasn't most important part.
Hopefully we can get a win here.
One last fuck you from ESPN this year, gotta love it
Yeah after the last couple days I don't want to help ESPN make a dime from this game.
Well its better than El Paso in my opinion, and they were never going to send uncheat to Annapolis when Charlotte is right there for them
Yeah I get everyone's pissed off about FSU, I am too, but this was always one of the most likely destinations. We're 6-6, the Military is the kind of bowl you get when you're 6-6.
Not everything is a conspiracy and/or a personal attack.
It does suck because with FSU missing the playoffs and the Orange Bowl taking Georgia instead of Ohio State, everyone got knocked down two rungs in the bowl pecking order. UNC would have likely been heading to the Gator Bowl Pop Tarts bowl which is a tad ahead of the Dukes bowl. But they fell down to the next level and of course Duke's scooped them up. Really sucks but Alabama basically screwed everything up for the ACC.
Alabama didn't screw anything up. The CFP committee did.
Agree that's really what I meant. SEC bias has screwed the whole bowl lineup for the ACC.
If Auburn does not let Alabama convert 4th and 30 for a TD, none of this mess happens.
UNC can suck my dick
One last fuck you from ESPN this year, gotta love it
That seems pretty optimistic with a whole month to go.
Still a better bowl than LOLUVa?
Winsipedia says our record versus Tulane is 5-4 with the most recent game a win in 1989. All games were played in 1950s, 60s, and 80s. 2-0 in Blacksburg and 3-4 in New Orleans.
Didn't we just beat Tulane a few years ago in a bowl? I think it was 2015 for CFBs last game. I remember barely winning in a combined game score of nearly 100 because Isaiah Ford had like 200 yards receiving or something like that
That was Tulsa - but I made the same double take that you did
Thanks haha I was sitting here like Tulane is the Green Wave... but I feel like we played a Golden Hurricane? Tulsa is the Golden Hurricane...so close
Tulsa hurricanes were our opponent in the 2015 independence bowl. So close, but the other gulf coast meteorological mascot school!
Tulsa (Beamers last game)
Edit:

Was at that game in the first row of the end zone bleacher seats. Four touchdowns- two for each team- within the first four minutes. Two of the Hokie TDs (Trayvon's 51 yard run and Ford's 75 yard reception) they ran up to the fence ten feet away- pretty sure the local Shreveport paper may had a pic of me with my hands up leaning over the fence at front of stands).
https://www.espn.com/college-football/game/_/gameId/400852719
1ST QTR-24-21 VT
2ND QTR 21-10 TO VT (HALFTIME SCORE 45-31 VT)
3RD QTR 7-7 (3RD QTR END SCORE 52-38)
4TH QTR 14-3 TULANE (FINAL SCORE 55-52)
VT wins two quarters(the first half), tied the 3rd and Tulane comes close but falls short after winning the 4th quarter. Virginia Tech's Dadi L'homme Nicolas ended Tulsa's final drive with a sack of Dane Evans on fourth down.
I remember this game cause my friend(my best friend's girlfriend and he were suppose to go but he was unable to) and I drove to Shreveport- leaving at 9 pm Christmas Day night; drove straight through arriving at our hotel at 130pm Saturday; dropped bags and tailgated for two hours; game lasted almost 4 hours; then we went and played pool til 1am. Got up Sunday and drove to New Orleans; spent three nights there; spent most nights at Coyote Ugly cause they had a bar pool table that turned out to have 400 free games on it. First night we finished 3/4 of bottle Of Jack Daniels; 2nd night we had a different bartender (who was drunk when she got there) and told her about the previous night; she looked at the bottle that had maybe a splash of Jack in it; went to the back and came out with a fresh bottle cracked the seal and said "we're gonna finish this bitch tonight"! Which we did - and I still to this day have the empty bottle signed by that bartender in my bar in my house. we didn't et back to the hotel earlier than 4 any of the nights! Great memories (with just a few hazy gaps lol).
Side note- as noted elsewhere I survive on peanut butter and usually had the jar and a box of Saltines at the end of the queen sized bed along with my laptop. My friend's girlfriend was obviously in a separate bed( I'm not a jerk) On the morning after the second night we woke up and found an opened pack of Saltines on the floor between the beds with a few crackers scattered about. On the end of my bed the jar of peanut butter was open .....and had a dollar bill stuffed in the top of the peanut butter! Never figured out exactly what happened....we surmised that we were drunk in the wee hours and she said "I'm hungry-can I have some peanut butter; here I'll pay you for it and left the dollar in the jar....but that's just a guess. (Like I said we had finished 3/4 bottle of Jack between us the first night; an entire bottle the 2nd night and the third night we switched it up and finished an entire bottle of vodka. Pretty good for me being 50 at the time I thought)!
Bit of a matchup, by the numbers here.

Tulane is led by the #11 rusher in the nation in Makhi Hughes, who has 1290 yards on 243 carries and 15 TDs. They have allowed 27 sacks on the season, which puts them one sack behind Syracuse. They have 34 sacks on the season, tied with Louisville and Miami. Opposing QBs are getting ratings of 127.4, VT is holding QBs to a rating of 127.5. The two teams are equivalent on Net Punting yards, and the two are similar in Kick Return Yards and Punt Return Yards. Tulane's kicker has hit 1 more FG than the Hokies'.
This would be a huge *sucks teeth* if Willie Fritz hadn't left for Houston
yea, it will be interesting what shape the Tulane team will be come bowl time. It appears VT may be bringing the entire two deep, but we'll see what happens when the portal opens up tomorrow.
Location ok for a bowl game when we are 6-6. It's less than a 2 hour drive for me so may be able to take it in.
Not crazy about the opponent, but with our record what should we really have expected.
Just thrilled to be in a bowl game again. Feels like an oasis from the desert we have been trekking.
I'm good with the opponent since it isn't someone we've played recently. Hope our team rises to the challenge to make this Pry's first winning season (of many 🤞🤞).
Screw any downers folks. All I really want to say about this game, is let's go out there and win. Beat a ranked team - yeah their coach is gone, who cares, they are still ranked. Keep the strong second half of the year going. APR is coming back. Drones will be here again. A winning season sets the stage for a better 2024.
Let's go!
Hokies!!!
I agree...And it gives us more practice time as well. Regardless of the bowl and the opponent I think this is a win-win for us. In fact, at the start of the season, some people on here didn't think we'd even make a bowl, but yet, here we are! Let's keep building!
I was definitely one of those people and I am so happy I was wrong. These practices will be great and I hope the game will be, too!
Sweet. A game we can easily travel to, we get a bunch of extra practices, and a good matchup for where we are right now. Might actually go to this one
Once FSU was screwed over it had to be this game. The ACC is on hook for X number of tickets so they need all the money they can get so all the teams playing close to alumni is important. Which normally I like close games but I will be out of town.
I was hoping for Charlotte because I would likely attend the game if so, but I'm happy for the many of you who will be able to attend this one in similarly easy fashion.
I like this matchup, not because I think it means we will win, but it's an interesting test for this team and I'm excited to watch us play another game. I'm also very excited for the extra bowl practices.
That's a time I can watch it, and I truly, truly don't care who the opponent is this year, so...
Yes, I'd have preferred facing USC, but perhaps we can add another one of those elusive bowl wins to our bowl history...
Jimmy Kitts 0-1
Jerry Claiborne 0-2
Bill Dooley 1-2
Frank Beamer 11-12
Justin Fuente 1-3
JC Price 0-1
A win and Pry moves into a tie for 2nd most Bowl wins of VT coaches.
Damn, that is tough to look at.
The question becomes, as was discussed elsewhere, is how many of our squads used the time to practice to win the game vs practicing the younger players to get ready for the next year vs didn't take the game seriously.
I actually think that it was more Beamers attitude for Bowl Games being more old school in that he viewed it as more of a reward for the team rather than a must win game. I think it was later on in his career where they really started taking it more seriously. The shine of the bowl streak was always dulled a bit by the fact that we had a losing record in bowl games during the streak.
Huh, hindsight is something. That's the opposite of how I viewed Beamer Bowls, but I was thinking more of how the teams played than how Beamer approached them.
Certainly all of the early and pre-Beamer squads practiced to win. Some of the late Beamer years felt lackadaisical. I'm still processing the Fuente years. JC Price was forced to play the younger players, cause no one was left on the roster.
That's...something
I'm surprised Beamer's record is that good.
It was almost literally every other bowl game was a win.
Dead horse, but I always thought Fuente got way more a pass on bowl shit performances than Beamer ever did. The ONE bowl fuente won, he was getting dusted at half and needed an all time collapse by arky to win. Fuente sucked in bowls- large. Lost to a team that literally could not complete a forward pass.
but man, that was a fun game to watch, in hindsight. If I'm going to spend half the game wringing my hands, that's the way I want to do it instead of sitting there trying to protect a paper thin lead.
That Cincy game was the only watchable game of the bowl season, we still should have won it.
Would rather play in New Orleans so I could do NYE and fish down there. Just happy to go bowling regardless
Agreed....relocate to Tulanes stadium and then hit all my favorite New Orleans spots. The market, the WWII museum, Johnny's Poboys, Killers PoBoys. Shrimp straight off the boat just hit different
Love the WW2 museum!
Will plug the American Heritage Museum in Hudson, Massachusetts. Where else can you drive a tank?
That WWII museum is unreal. I still haven't made it through the entire thing.
Yeah really glad we planned a week for our New Orleans trip when the museum opened. I spent three and a half days wandering through. Most of my time was spent on the Pacific history side as my grandfather was a POW in the Death March of Bataan and was forced to mine copper for the Mitsubishi Corporation.
my grandfather was a POW in the Death March of Bataan and was forced to mine copper for the Mitsubishi Corporation.
Holy shit. That is an insane story.
I'm here because the US won the battle of Midway. My grandfather was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and never saw action. He said they were told the Japanese would have attacked there next after Midway and they (the US) would have gotten crushed.
Ironically my great grandfather on my mother's side of the family was a fighter pilot for the Luftwaffe. His daughter married a Chilean who worked as a translator for the US army and got his citizenship to the US through his service.
History, particularly family history, is fascinating to me.
Yeah Mitsubishi was forced to acknowledge their part in the late 90s. My grandmother received a letter of apology from Mitsubishi back then. My grandfather carried his brother on his back for the last ten miles to the trains. They both managed to make it home although I never got to meet either as they died young after all the stuff they were subjected to.
My mom's family heritage was half Irish/half German. Her uncle(maybe great uncle-can't remember and she is long passed so can't ask her) was one of the only German generals who was charged with war crimes at the US
Military Nuremburg trials (not the International trials) but was acquitted.
Wife and I went to the museum on our honeymoon.
Afterwards we went to the museum bar (highly recommend the P-51 and P-47 beers and the Jamaican beef patties)
Turns out they were having trivia night at that moment. Three categories related to the war and one random one, which happened to be Weddings, Honeymoons, and Newlyweds that night.
Seeing my wife and I met on the Tech quiz bowl team and my major was military history, we did quite well.
Also, as I was telling my wife some of the stuff I knew about certain parts of battles and how things happened at certain exhibits, I had inadvertently gathered a small tour crowd.
Wow, VT is an 8 point favorite
Product of curb stomping lol.
I'm sure Vegas is full of portal experts and data junkies.
Was that the initial line, or did it start lower and has been moving up?
We opened as 5.5 pt favorites; we're getting 80% of the public bets. O/U has moved from 48.5 down to 46.5 since open, too.
I don't bet, but I use the CBS sports app. It always has this info on every available matchup.
VT's HC didn't portal away with a bunch of players this year.
Tulane lost their coach, their best WR entered the portal, and I think there is a question as to whether Michael Pratt will portal/not play.
I have now revised my stance to we should probably win this bowl game lol.
100%. We take the bowl trophy, the winning season, and those good vibes into the offseason.
