Ouch. Didn't see this one coming.
I take it as a sign that Delane and Strong are both coming back. I'm sure Canteen wants to be more than just the nickel guy, if one of them were leaving, he probably stay.
Hmm this one is interesting unless we're expected to retain Strong and Delane...
Yeah think that means Strong and Delane are returning and Canteen doesn't want to just be a nickel/swing safety. Plus we have really high upside younger guys like Johnson and Lovett who can slot into the backup corner/nickel roles and need reps. Best of luck to him but can see why he might want more playing time.
Surprised that's he's transferring. Surprised that he's staying for the Military Bowl.
Hopefully this means Strong and Delane are staying. And that the younger guys like Lovett are expected to be contributors.
Best of luck to Canteen. Truly was a very important piece of that elite secondary this past year.
He played well down the stretch, this I am perplexed by.
I'm willing to say he was the most underrated guy on D this year. He was steady and consistent and moved all over to fill gaps. Truly a team first guy.
Agreed. He played 4 of the 5 defensive backfield positions this season and he did not stand out in a bad way at any of them. If you think about all of the injuries and youth across those positions through the year, you could argue he was one of the most valuable players on the team. I suspect that because of his maturity and work ethic, the coaches trusted him with a lot - and rightly so. Best of luck wherever you land!
I imagine he wanted to make his bones at corner. He played less nickel as the year went on and had to play some safety.
I have questions about his long speed to be an NFL corner, but I hope he finds the right program to show his skills.
Seems like a good guy and glad he wants to play in the bowl. If that is why he wants to leave it must either mean that Strong/Delane are coming back or that the hype around Lovett/Johnson is well deserved.
This is my guess, and from what I've seen a lot of others' guess as well.
Playing time was probably not going to be an issue next season at VT, but we might have played him at every position in the secondary last year. If he wants to lock down specifically outside corner spot somewhere it probably wasn't going to be here barring the loss of Strong or Delane.
Glad we got some reps for the young guys this season.
Damn
Sad to see him go.
He made a play in the end zone this year to save a touchdown that was one of the better pure technique corner plays I've seen in a while.
Dorian made a nice comment thanking him for everything and saying how much he learned from him. Wishing the best for Canteen!
Absolutely no ill will towards the guy and I wish him the best, but I thought Pry's policy was to only let guys use the facilities once they enter the portal. I didn't think they were allowed to play for us or even practice with the team anymore. I'm glad to have him for the bowl game, but I am definitely confused.
We shall see if they play or not but seems like there's two potential situations with the transfers. A "mutual" transfer out vs a transfer out to get a bag.
That was definitely JC's policy. I'd be interested to hear what Pry says about it this year. I wonder if the players that get to play in the bowl are still being recruited to stay 🤷.
I think the bowl game is somewhat of a unique situation. Somebody like Canteen is obviously going to want to have a good game, but his best tape on film, etc. From all accounts, he's a pro's pro, and will go about it the right way.
Also, to a point others have raised, for these guys that are leaving by "mutual agreement," they may want to do the same, but I imagine there is also value to both sides in avoiding the depleted roster situation like we had vs. Maryland. That was so bad that in hindsight, we almost should've cancelled the game that year like we did in 2020. We had a glorified scout team out on the field and I would think Pry and Co. want to avoid that.
Selfishly, I hope he ends up coming back for next year and helps us lock down the entire secondary.
Nothing except success wherever he goes.
