I loosely follow the NFL but I noticed something today that has me scratching my head and I can't figure out the answer - Why is Minnesota traveling to Philly 2 years in a row for a regular season game? Is this some weird side effect from the expanded schedule?

Each team won their division last year. Since the NFC East and NFC North played each other in full last year and won't be doing so again until 2025, that means the first place teams from a year ago face off against each other, then the second place teams, third place, last place etc. So this is a battle between last year's division winners.
One of the scheduling quirks the NFL instituted in the 2002 revamp.
That tells you why the teams are playing each other at all, but I can't give any insight as to why the game is in Philly. There was a period of time in the mid 2010s where it seemed like the Eagles had to go to Seattle every year, and they'd always come home having invented a new way to lose. So this affects every team.

I had this exact same thought regarding the Vikings during that timeframe. I refuse to look it up but I swear they played in Seattle every year during that timeframe (except the one outdoor playoff game that shall not be named) and every game was just an agonizingly dumb way to lose.

Obviously there's a rule that when the a team beats you and then the next game wins the Super Bowl in your stadium, they take ownership of the franchise, so every game from them on is a home game against you.
In reality, no idea. Must just be the scheduling cycle hitting a quirk this year.

I have never been more certain the Vikings were going to lose a game as I was going into that NFC championship game. The minute Diggs crossed the goal line (well, after I finished celebrating) I looked at my friends I was watching with and said "we're going to lose badly next week." Such is life as a Vikings fan lol

Sucks for Rodgers... but at the same time, I can't think of a more Jets thing to happen to have a newly acquired star that your return to relevancy, and super bowl hopes were all hinging on, go down 4 snaps into the new season.

He's lined-up for a $51M salary + bonus in '25. Maybe it was structured that was with both sides knowing it was unlikely, but that's an insane amount of money to walk away from especially now that he's not going to get hit for basically an entire year and saving the rest of his body from damage.

Honestly though neither were expected to be able to sign either long term and getting good draft capital for two expiring contracts was a great move. The Bears chasing Sweat makes no sense since they have zero chance of competing. That second rounder could end up being first or second pick in second round so a chance to snap up best that slips into second.
Draft capital probably more critical with Bienemy likely being head coach next year barring any drastic change.

I figured the same thing. Probably not resigning either of them because each would want a bump. Plus, a compensatory pick is at best a third rounder I believe. They got better value for Sweat, but I think Young just never developed into that elite player he was projected to be.
This has to spell doom for Ron.

So...we're done with phrasing, right? We're not doing phrasing anymore? Just checking.
EDIT: oh come on man, really? a ninja edit just so you aren't using the phrase "head job" multiple times. Leave it up there and let us have our chuckles.

This is hilarious. Like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. But since it's Mahomes it'll just be his passion for winning. pic.twitter.com/X6oqSWkEbgβ Bradley Gelber (@BradleyGelber) December 11, 2023
The best part is how they've quadrupled down on it over a call that could only have been more blatant if the chiefs WR had lined up facing the other way with the defense.

Yeah pretty clear that Toney cost them the game for second week in a row. Once Mahomes sees film he will want to rage on Toney. He and Kelce will be like...

On the play, Kelce caught it at about the 10 yard line and then lateralled it to Toney who walked into the end zone which was negated by offsides. They then proceeded to turn it over on 4th down to end their chance to come back.

The call was correct, but that call was made **twice** in the 2022 NFL football season (272 games, avg 63 snaps in an NFL game, for 17,136 snaps in the 2022 NFL season, and offensive offside was called twice). Mahomes was upset that a call he had personally never seen called in 7 years, was called with a minute left in a crucial December game.
I understand his frustration. WR's line up offside in almost every game of football at every level. When you declare to the ref whether you are on/off the LOS for formation purposes, they tend to give a ton of leeway in what constitutes both of those things. Additionally, they (used to at least) tell you to back up if you signaled you were on the line and they say you lined up too far forward.
I have since heard that it was more of an area of emphasis this season, but yeah, it was a super rare call in a big game and it directly changed the outcome. It was not, however, an incorrect call. I think the ref was right to call it, but Mahomes was understandably frustrated. I would have probably reacted poorly as well deep in a heated contest like that. That isn't saying it's okay, but I'm not gonna pretend like I wouldn't be upset about that as well.

Heck the Center normally looks left and right before snapping. He should have said something to the WR before snapping. When you can't see the line judge due to a player in the way, somebody is offsides.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think you are overestimating the number of times a professional receiver lines up offsides. It is one of the easiest things to get right.
The call was correct and just because there is a perception that it isn't called very often, it's still a penalty.
Just like speeding. I tend to push the speed limit a little. I am never pulled over despite going about 5 miles per hour over the limit and passing multiple cops sitting on the side of the road. If I ever do get pulled over for it, and I tell the cop I've always gone past cops going 5 over and they didn't pull me over, you know what he's going to do? Laugh at me, tell me today is not my lucky day and give me a ticket.

One day, I want to flash my lights as cop blows past me on the interstate going 80 when I am going 65 and say what is the process to give you a ticket for reckless and speeding?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah and they can't even officiate that play correctly, as twice theyve called the Eagles for being offside when it was later shown to be Kelce's off ball hand that was flagged, which it shouldn't be if it isn't in front of the ball, which it wasn't.

Top 10 in every category despite having one of the weakest receiver groups in the league. If the entire league was re-drafted tomorrow, 32 out of 32 teams would take him with the first pick if they had it.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Oh come on, there is at least one team stupid enoufght to not take him. This is the NFL you know some one would be like, "You know Bryce Young is like 8 years younger than Mahomes, you could build a franchise around him" or "his hands aren't big enough to play in the cold of Buffalo or green bay." Or some other stupid crap because well Johnny Manziel was a first round QB. You know it's not 32 out of 32.
That being said, i dont disagree that he is by far the best player and all 32 teams should take him.

While entertaining, if your QB didn't lose his mind in that situation you'd have to wonder about them a bit. Derek Carr levels of IDGAF didn't win him two super bowls.

Duane Brown may have just indirectly ended Aaron Rodgers season/career.
Go Big Herm/Hokies
Sucks for Rodgers... but at the same time, I can't think of a more Jets thing to happen to have a newly acquired star that your return to relevancy, and super bowl hopes were all hinging on, go down 4 snaps into the new season.
Ouch. Just Ouch. I used to like Rodgers during his early years. Unfortunately his fame got into his head and he lost some marbles.
Confirmed - torn Achilles for Rodgers
Well that is the year for him.
He's 40
It might very well be the end of his career.
He's lined-up for a $51M salary + bonus in '25. Maybe it was structured that was with both sides knowing it was unlikely, but that's an insane amount of money to walk away from especially now that he's not going to get hit for basically an entire year and saving the rest of his body from damage.
That was my thought. Think of how much good a year off did for Gronk.
although he'll never get the kind of money again like he saw this year, where he's made $9.2M per snap.
Chase Young to the Niners. Holy Shit!!

Sweat and Young gone. They just gutted that defense.

Has the WSH offense been that good?
LOL- 0.00000% chance Bienemy gets the DC head coaching job. or any other NFL head coaching job.
So...we're done with phrasing, right? We're not doing phrasing anymore? Just checking.

lol. ok
Not all that shocking. McDaniels and Ziegler fired late yesterday.

Watching Mahomes lose his mind on the sideline at the end of the Chiefs loss was entertaining.
The best part is how they've quadrupled down on it over a call that could only have been more blatant if the chiefs WR had lined up facing the other way with the defense.
Yeah pretty clear that Toney cost them the game for second week in a row. Once Mahomes sees film he will want to rage on Toney. He and Kelce will be like...

what was the call?
he was called for "offensive offside" which means lined up in the neutral zone
On the play, Kelce caught it at about the 10 yard line and then lateralled it to Toney who walked into the end zone which was negated by offsides. They then proceeded to turn it over on 4th down to end their chance to come back.

Let me know how that works out for you.
Make sure you have a big meal first, the food in jail is terrible.
Saw online it's been called 11 times already this season. Also watching I never saw him look to the ref.
Saw that same stat. Still a rare call, but more emphasis put on it this season it appears.
In this instance Toney never looked over or pointed at the side judge.
It was called twice yesterday and the 2023 tally is up to 13. The emphasis going into this year seems to be a reaponse to the tush push.
Yeah and they can't even officiate that play correctly, as twice theyve called the Eagles for being offside when it was later shown to be Kelce's off ball hand that was flagged, which it shouldn't be if it isn't in front of the ball, which it wasn't.
Didn't see the game, but never liked Mahomes. This season is showing that he is still a great QB but it was Hill that made him Elite.
Last year without Hill, Mahomes:
Andy Reid is the coach, they are always going to pass.
And this year his stats are what?
Top 10 in every category despite having one of the weakest receiver groups in the league. If the entire league was re-drafted tomorrow, 32 out of 32 teams would take him with the first pick if they had it.
True and I did with my fantasy teams as well.
Oh come on, there is at least one team stupid enoufght to not take him. Fair point. David Tepper is quickly stepping into the role of "dumbest and most interfering NFL owner" that was recently vacated by Mr. Snyder.
While entertaining, if your QB didn't lose his mind in that situation you'd have to wonder about them a bit. Derek Carr levels of IDGAF didn't win him two super bowls.
Dolphins absolutely choke a win away against the Titans on the MNF double header and stereotype NJ Italian guy leads the Giants to a win. With the greatest "agent" of all time.
I guess he decided to fit a stereotype? Oh, my poor Packers. They played so bad that they let the Giants win.
