We didn't even have AIM. The phone line for the single phone on the dorm floor ran through the ceiling of my buddy's room.
We tapped off it and attached a modem so we could dial into the school computer network.
It was a a lot easier than walking down to the computer lab to stand in line for a terminal.

Daaaang. I remember when they installed Ethernet in the dorms after my freshmen year though. And now they're tearing down the dorms on the upper quad for some sweet new ones.

Freshman year we all bought ethernet cable and ran it down the hall above the roof tiles into one guy's room that had bought a hub so we could run Quake tournaments.

TECH TECH VPI!
We did have landlines in our dorm room. But I'm old enough to remember my grandmother having a party line phone in her home, too.
I dialed in from my rental house off campus using a Commodore 64. All text and command line prompts. Saved a lot of time like you said.
Still remember playing Ghostbusters and Quest for Tires on my parents commodore 64. I would spend hours on there.
Contra and Pole Position for me when i was a youngin'
Wow, your parents had a Commodore 64? Did they find some use for it other than games?
California Games on C64 was my favorite, Ghostbusters a close 2nd
These were some of my favorites on the C64
Ghostbusters (I love how you started with a VW):

River Raid was another of my favorites

International Karate:

Bruce Lee:

So much awesome in one post.... phucking River Raid, would waste hours upon hours getting absolutely nowhere. Damn river was endless.
You are the man! I could not remember River Raid to save my life. That was the bees knees (I know I'm lame, but it just felt right)

Upper Quad just doesn't look right with Rasche completely gone right now.
Welp, Bud Foster just broke twitter:
This is my total lack of surprise.
Sam Rogers once said he thought he ought to let people know he was going to do something or other. And so....twitter was born.
Sam Rogers's arrival is revealed with the same whistle of a mortar round. His arrival also has the same impact.
It would make my life if this became Bud's avatar on Twitter:
