I will start things off. I am already sucked into the new True Detective. Nothing will ever beat the first one, but so far I think this one has the chance to be much better than the last two installments.

Sounds like the 2012 Russell Athletic Bowl.

...is...is that Clarice Starling??

Onward and upward

Jodie Foster definitely. Not sure about Starling. Can't remember what happened to her character after she enjoyed a nice dinner with Hannibal of her bosses brains.

Apparently that sort of thing gets you demoted and sent to Alaska.

Love that they're tying it back to Season 1 with strange circle and Rusts dad. Excited to see how they weave it in more.

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

Like the tie ins/ references, but I think they may have overcorrected too far towards the occult angle that was missing in 2 and 3.

The first season walked the cosmic horror tightrope flawlessly, building that sense of "this world isn't right," but ultimately there was no paranormal element. This one had a ghost in episode one.

Also, after I watch every episode, I find that I'd rather just have rewatched the Thing.

I knew it was a matter of time before you posted this. There has been a lot of discussion on the interwebs on this one about a certain character coming back, but I have not watched the Bad Batch so tough for me to follow.

I've got a month to treadmill rewatch the arc from clone wars s7 and the first two seasons here to refresh myself

Makes me sad they are ending this one. Hopefully the 15 episodes sparks something new.

Blue eye samurai on netflix is pretty darn good. Cool animation, cool story. Def not kid appropriate, but great if you like graphic novels, etc.

I second this, Blue Eye Samurai was very good. Also enjoyed The Legend of Vox Machina (Amazon) and the live-action version of One Piece (Netflix).

I want to check out Masters of the Air, though I've seen both good and bad reviews.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

I haven't seen any of these others you mentioned, thanks, I'll have to check them out.

I appreciated the increased pace of the love action One Piece vs the anime. I still love the anime but it's easier getting my wife into it if she gets the same story in 8 episodes.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I watched the Nikki Giovanni documentary Going to Mars on HBO the other day. I thought it was very well done.

Reacher Second Season was a home run. Leaves you wanting more.

Agreed. Quite a few twists and turns. Also great that the story wove some backstory in.

I really thought they'd kill that one guy off but didn't.

The Holdovers on Peacock is a great flick. Real feel good type of movie. Believe it got nominated for some of the big awards this year.

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

I second this. If you like movies with an independent feel this is a good one. Giamatti is excellent as always. Supporting cast has some good characters as well.

I was sick as a dog and confined to a stateroom on our Viking riverboat trip. No appetite, felt like crap, too poorly to read my book, I tuned in to a movie of a book I'd read years ago...The Art of Racing in the Rain. Now, this is a tale of love and loss, but also of hope. And if you are a dog lover, it's a bonus. To be honest, it is a serious tear jerker, but it sure took my mind off of wondering if I had Covid, at least for a while. Not a blockbuster, but the makers of Kleenex will thank you for watching. The book is much more of a seriously great product than the movie, but give it a shot.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Watching NCIS Sydney. Not as good as the original and the awkward character starts out completely cringeworthy, but they soften that over time. Good filler until the original comes back in Feb.

Also Avatar The Last Airbender live action in late Feb πŸ‘€

Pretty much impossible for it to be worse than the piece of garbage that was the M. Night Shyamalan movie.

I have no idea what you're talking about. No one's made a live action A:TLA yet. Or a shitty sequel, for that matter. Nope Nope Nope.

Oh god, what is this shitty sequel you don't mention?

I did not and will not watch M. Night Shyamalamadingdong's attempt.

Trailer for the new Netflix show has what appear to be direct copies of scenes from the OG show... I am cautiously optimistic.

The wife and I started re-watching Babylon 5 from the beginning.

How does it hold up?

Stories and dialogue is still great, computer graphics (which were brand new at the time) show that they are 90's.

Loudermilk on Netflix has been fantastic. Finishing up the 3rd (final) season.

β€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

Affirm this. We binged it all in a few days and though there are a few mediocre episodes, we were quite entertained.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Loudermilk is definitely quirky and it took a while to get going for me, but I'm glad I hung in there. I laugh out loud several times per episode now, and the Brian Regan character is hilarious.

I enjoyed watching Legendary Linemen from NFL Films yesterday. The Bob Brown segment is my favorite.

We thought my 14yo might like the early 2000s TV show "Chuck" and we weren't wrong. He loved it, and we thoroughly enjoyed running through the 5 seasons in a matter of a couple months. Fantastic series that's worth a revisit, or 100% merits a first watch if you never saw it. It's a comedic take on the spy genre, with a bunch of culture references and a ton of heart.

I also very much enjoyed how they found new and interesting ways to get Yvonne into various forms of form fitting attire every episode

She was the best reason to watch the show!

I had forgotten how male gaze-y the show was.

Don't know what you're talking about.

I'm pretty sure that was part of why it was so easy to watch.

Yep, I'll definitely be there in theaters for this!

New season of Fargo might have been the best of the series. Definitely best ending. If you like the Coens, particularly the more noir-type movies like Blood Simple, Fargo, and No Country for Old Men, it's a must watch.

Sold.

Clearly as irreverent as ever.

How's everyone feeling about the True Detective finale?

The ah-ha moment wasn't that satisfying for me which is a bummer for a mystery series especially given the bar True Detective has set in the past. Though there are still a few loose ends that didnt clearly wrap up (to me at least) so maybe there were some deeper elements there that I just don't appreciate yet.

Overall I really enjoyed the characters and story of this season. It's in a similar tier to season 3 for me: nowhere near the high of season 1, but also nowhere near the low season 2

I feel similarly. It was a good show overall. I thought the ending was ok, maybe just because I didn't expect it. But I agree there seemed like there were some things they could have gone deeper into, or explained more. Maybe could have used a couple more episodes.

Wonder if the writers' strike didn't mess them up a bit. Don't know the timing of when the scripts were written/filmed, etc. but they may have been unable to follow up on a few things because no writers. Just speculation on my part, of course.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

Yeah, it was a bit underwhelming. Not sure about the writers strike mentioned below but I would also note that this season was 6 episodes, when the first 3 were 8, so maybe that is the reason it was a bit shorter.

Good not great. I'd still recommend it to friends and family but I was slightly underwhelmed with the final reveal.

To be fair to this season, however, I've come to look back at s1 less fondly the further I get from original air date. It, too, was somewhat underwhelming given the massive buildup to the finale.

I enjoyed it. I was a bit worried they went too far into the supernatural stuff. It made the ending more satisfying that it a plausible outcome.

I had the same worry that they were too deep in the supernatural so I definitely liked that there was very much a logical explanation. I just wish they had spent more time on that logical explanation throughout the 6 episodes because it sort of felt like it came out of left field to save them from a mystery they didn't quite know how to wrap up

Who's planning to see Dune? I'm back in Peru where the tickets are under $8 so I'm definitely going as soon as it comes out.

Also.... A WOOKIE JEDI!!!!

I would also have to think that Yoda would show up at some point. This show is supposed to take place about 100 years before episode one.

Shit, I scrolled all the way to December and didn't see this thread. So I'll just take what I posted in the other thread and put it here:

Shogun so far has been great. It's on cable on F/X, and streaming on Hulu, but since it's on cable, episodes are only available week-to-week. They're up through Episode 5 of 10 right now, and the first four have been fantastic. A few changes from the books, but nothing really major to this point. A favorite book of mine, so the Game of Thrones style budget and cinematic feel have been welcomed.

Haven't even seen this trailer yet (I'm at work), but I read a review on this, and it sounds interesting. Liu Cixin's Three Body Problem was a fantastic sci-fi read. One of the most difficult parts of the book, though, was that it was set in China, and the names made it harder for western audiences to follow, even with a Dramatis Personae in the front matter. (It really broke immersion having to refer back to that every so often.) The Netflix show is set in Oxford, so that difficulty has been removed. The story was so good, though, that I'm really looking forward to this, which is good, as it dropped today on Netflix. Check it out!

But since this is a new thread covering 2024, I gotta say that Dune 2 has me excited. Yes, I know, it's been out for a bit, but I have kids, so it's not easy to go watch a movie opening weekend. We're trying to work a rewatch of the first Dune movie in and take the kids (11 and 14) with us, so that might be fun. Hope to see it on the big screen soon! Who has seen it, and what are your non-spoilery thoughts?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I'm very interested in the 3 body problem, but was a little skeptical since it was the same guys that did Game of Thrones. However, since they have the full series of books to go on, and don't have to rely on notes from the author to finish the series, then it has the chance to be very good.

I'm now only four episodes in, because I made the mistake of watching the first episode with the wife. =^/ Some stunning visuals in the in-world virtual reality game, but the story has played out remarkably well. They're doing a good job of drip-feeding information, while giving you enough to keep you intrigued on what comes next. I'll give the two credit; they do a really good job creating a show when they have good source material to work from. It's been fantastic so far, so much so that I'm considering blowing up the marriage and binging the rest tonight.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Finished it last night (only 8 episodes). Ending of episode 5: holy shit! Season ended on a bit of a down note with a promise of hope, but on par for the source material. Looking forward to season 2!

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I'm through eight episodes now of Shogun, and the last episode was a real gut-wrencher (IYKYK).

There's been some changes from the book, especially in character names (now reflective of names used in the Sengoku period of Japan) and Mariko's relationship with Blackthorne, but nothing that takes away from the grand story line. The podcast accompanying each episode has been interesting as well, adding some flavor to the production and the decisions made in how to adapt the novel. So far, it's been everything I've wanted to see in an adaptation of a great novel, and I'm REALLY looking forward to episode 9. It should be a BLAST (again, IYKYK).

Anyone else watching Fallout on Amazon Prime? I am 3 episodes and and so far really liking it. I never played the game but have a few buddies that were obsessed with it back when it first came out.

Second season is better than the first. First one I was kind of meh on.

Are we talking about the same show? I think there is only one season and it just dropped last Thursday? Are you thinking Halo?

Yeah you are right. Getting my video games twisted. Have not watched Fallout. They should have some better material for all the variations of Fallout scenarios.

I'm through episode 7 and still really digging it. As someone who has played the games, the show runners frigging nailed it. The aesthetic, dark humor, brutal nature of everyone, the vaults, etc. My only gripe is in such an expansive wasteland everyone finds each other in two seconds.

Also the shear number of game Easter eggs, in universe brand is delightful

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

I'm only one episode in, but what I've seen so far has been really good. Lots of fan service, especially in the opening scene and all the activity in bunker 33. I suggested the show to my wife (very much not a gamer) who reluctantly agreed to watch, and now she's multiple episodes in. When I asked her how she was enjoying it all I got was a defeated grunt, which is about as close to a "you were right" response that I will ever get.

I finished Fallout last night. That was a great show, I'm hoping they pick it up for season 2.

I'm fairly certain it already was renewed.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Started watching Warrior on Netflix recently. The acting is not amazing, but it is an entertaining show. Set in San Fransisco in the late 1800s, main character immigrates from China and becomes a hatchet man for a powerful Chinatown crime family.

If you're into kung fu and boobs, you should check it out

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Love me some Kwai Chang esque "Kung Fu" and the latter too. I'm in.

If I am not mistaken, this is the show that Bruce Lee wanted to make but then the studios took it and cast David Carridine and made it into Kung Fu, because at the time an Asian lead actor in a television series was still an issue I guess.

Correct, the show was executive-produced by Bruce's daughter, Shannon Lee

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I can't stop watching this gif. On the second strike, it looks like he's going for a backhand with his right hand, yet ends up looking like he struck him with his left, yet it didn't look like a double-strike. So confused.

Kung fu and boobs, you say? Imma have to watch this.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

hard to tell but looks like he's using his right to block a left from the other guy before hitting him with his left.

Onward and upward

Trailer(s) came out a few weeks back for House of the Dragon season 2. I will be Team Black myself

I had prequel fatigue and didn't watch this when it when it first came out, but binged a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend to anyone that stayed away from it at first

I went in reluctantly given how disappointing the final GOT season was, but it also drew me in and I thought season 1 was well done and I'm all in again.

The tough realization is that everything after season four was a notable dropoff from the first four seasons. The show was carried by a few big battles/moments and that we, collectively, were all-in on the characters we loved at that point. The signs of deterioration had been present for the previous two seasons.

Yeah, once they got past the books it was obvious that the story was lacking since they no longer had source material to use, and then of course they REALLY failed to stick the landing.

The first season of 3 Body Problem was great IMO (same guys made it), and since I think they are only going to make the 3 books into TV seasons I expect that if they do make them they should be really good.

Yeah, I am reluctantly giving them props, as they can make a damn good tv show given source material.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Sweet, I'll wait til the season is over, then re-up my HBO for a month to watch it

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

HOT D should be pretty epic all things considered if they just stick the damn landing that's already laid out for them. If anyone has trudged through Fire & Blood, the story on paper is absolutely wild and would make incredible TV.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

this is the shot of adrenaline the franchise needs. This is the most excited I've been since the lead-up to Endgame. If I'm being honest - this is the only MCU movie I've been excited to see since Endgame.

Hell Yeah. This could be good but I am only cautiously optimistic. Prometheus was amazing, but Alien: Covenant did not quite live up to expectations. With the original Alien and Aliens being two of my favorite movies I will be watching for sure.

I'm actually in the other camp - I thought Covenant was the better movie, but I thought they were both pretty good. As with ANY Alien movie, I'm cautiously optimistic. As great as the franchise can be (Alien, Aliens, Prometheus, Covenant) there have been the share of duds and just absolute failures (Resurrection, AVP - Looking at you).

For those that were living under a rock or too busy to know - Pearl Jam released their new album on Friday and had it buried by all the Taylor Swift releases. I've listened to it a few times and its really good - best album (IMHO) in a long time.

Pearl Jam hasn't released a record of note in my lifetime. I was born a year after Ten came out.

Ten is a great record. VItalogy is pretty good. After that, they were huge enough just to write whatever they wanted- radio friendly be damned. They aren't Kiss or Def Leppard who continued to focus on what record execs wanted and not what they wanted to play. Pearl Jam is the opposite.

Though nowhere near as big as (or never really big), MGMT took a similar route after their "Pop" success with Oracular Spectacular. There top 3 singles were great hits. I really digged their debut and unique sound. I was excited about them having a hopefully long career continuing this trend, but they changed direction to create music that they wanted to do. I really didn't like their new sound but respect their decision to stay true to themselves.

i told my wife that taylor swift made a mistake releasing her record the same day as pearl jam, she just wouldn't get the publicity she was hoping for ;-)

actually, completely different audiences, but pearl jam actually announced their album a while ago, and has been releasing songs the last few weeks.

I haven't listened to all of Dark Matter yet, but I've really liked their last couple albums, Gigaton and Lightning Bolt. Will have to find some time to listen to Dark Matter all the way through a few times.

I have tickets to their concert this Summer at Wrigley Field, really looking forward to that. This will be the 4th time I've seen them.

Funny that this thread morphed into a Music thread.

Anyway, in regards to Taylor Swift I remember when Tool came out with Fear Inoculum and it pissed off all the swifties because it knocked her out of the top spot and she ended up not getting the record for weeks at number 1 or something like that. That was glorious.

Speaking of which, what's with releasing songs on Youtube with a visualizer? They don't release songs with a video anymore?

There hasn't been a music television video channel in decades that actually showed videos.

Not yet, avoiding spoilers. I'm sure we will get a thread going for this one. I'm going to try and watch them tonight.

First two episodes were great. I'm totally in.

ep 1 hot take...

One of the best comments I have heard so far was in response to the take of"the character of Yord is too rigid and wooden for Star Wars" and that response was, "My brother in the Force, have you seen Anakin Skywalker?"

Trinity downloaded the Jedi program.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

I'm a sucker for the coming-of-age, summer job movie, and Snack Shack was probably the first good one since Adventureland. Set in 90's Nebraska, vibes are immaculate.

Anybody watch The Bear? We did, loved a couple of episodes but were a bit not so impressed with more of the season. No fan of the ending either. We love the characters, love the idea, and while I love seeing all the food stuff, my wife is less into that. We both got tired of the slowness in a program that isn't long enough to support the proportions, for lack of a better way to express myself.

Edit: about the food stuff, yeah I know, that's what the show is about, but sometimes the micro managing of certain plates is repetitive and takes time away from the people the show is really about. Does that make sense?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I tried to watch it, after about three episodes of the first season and realized I disliked almost all of the characters. So I stopped watching.

On the deeper end of things, it amplifies the unkemptness of ptsd, mental health, trauma, anxiety. The episode w the single shot. The christmas episode (which was nominated for 24 emmys!!!!) All of season 3 that doesn't gain traction, or does it. There's the one bit that just eats thru days of repetetiveness...all the lameness. But a few others that's tick out like a sore thumb. They've done a great job w the dirtiness and uneasiness of it all. It's not for all. It's not easy to watch. And that's the point.

Let it rip.

Wait, what?

Ummm holy shit, ok then

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Pivoting off of Kang as the big bad after the Jonathan Majors debacle was always going to be hard, but I really dont like this. I was never a big fan of the multiverse/variants storyline so this just seems kind of odd and desperate to me, especially since they've publicly acknowledged that the "multiverse saga" is kind of a failure.

Bringing back the Russo brothers is a huge plus though. If they had made that announcement with any other actor, my excitement would be at a 10/10. With RDJ, probably 6/10.

I still think they could have just used another actor for Kang and kept going. After all they ended the one movie with the congress of Kangs and I am pretty sure at least some of them were different people.

yeah I say it was always going to be hard to pivot (and it was), but it was literally a character with infinite possibilities of appearance

My brother was there for this panel. He said everyone thought it was just a joke until it wasn't.

Edit: Sorry, he mislead me. He was there but not for this panel. He said that wait is so dumb.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

need to have someone camp out in line for you... join them last minute. But the wait at everything Comic-Con is ridiculous, this one 100X as much.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Honestly, I hope this is a big misdirection or a one movie deal. Rdj was great as iron Man, but why not give another actor a shot?

Also:

It's weird to me to announce such a big name for such a big role, seems like something you would keep under wraps via misdirection or something rather.

Keeping it under wraps would have been great because RDJ would have been thought to be iron man again

However, I think marvel needs people to get excited about their movies again.

Marvel needs to remember that quality over quantity is what made the movies.

Maxxxine was so incredibly disappointing. First two thirds of the movie, pretty fantastic build up. Last act was a massive whiff.

Not sure if anyone else has been watching Hard Knocks, but there was a Jeff King sighting last night.

So far for me, with only two episodes in I can say that the Penguin might be the best TV show of the year.

Ferrell and Milioti are well-cast and the plot is really good so far. They did a nice job with this one.
