oh man this is so true. McShay has been a pro Logan person, and it just shows that we did drop a lot of passes. I think Logan will surprise a bunch of people in a few years.
I think it'll take less than that. I think his impact will be made immediately.
Its ok

I'm glad someone made fun of the ambiguity of his statement...
Who said that?
Oh, just own it why dontcha?
???
No what I meant was that I think Thomas will be surprising people in less than a few years. I think he'll shock all the doubters and haters within his first or second year.
yeah I knew what you meant..but it's funny..you have to admit
Wonder what Todd McShay would be doing if he had a real job.
But seriously, sure the receivers started off awfully, but they improved drastically as the season went on.
yeah they improved but early in the year it was bad.. like really bad.
Oh, I agree 100%. But I respect the WRs and Coach Moorehead for all the work they put in to improve as much as they did during the regular season. It's not typical to see such a drastic improvement during the season, when they have a lot of other responsibilities than just practicing pass catching skills.
A new beer for every punt or turnover will get you drunk.
Would've been 14 beers during the Alabama game. That'd do it.
I think I drank that many anyways. Can't really remember much after that kickoff return...
lets see what sam got to say about it...
I had that same thought!
In my house, by the end of the third quarter, I thought the score of Bama - VT was all tied up at bourbon - bourbon.
It's going to be awesome when AMO responds.
This is about to get good.
And now we wait...
Did he mention the play in that game where Logan blindly threw a pass while backpedaling into the middle of the field that would have embarrassed Aaron Brooks?
Of course you get downvoted - Key players will forever be pissed when people are honest about Logan's terrible play. Great point though.
if I had to hazard a guess, I'd say he was downvoted for comparing LT3 to a wahoo qb more than saying he made a bad play
Truth is an absolute defense- that throw was Brooksian. LT3 both a) didn't get a ton of help and b) dug his own hole quite a bit. They aren't mutually exclusive.
I agree with both a and b.
You must not have been here for the tens of thousands of "bench Logan" posts/threads.
Manziel threw a similar pass against Alabama this year. and everyone prayed him.
That pick 6 he through ended up being one of the differences in the game. I don't think anyone this side of an ESPN talking head prayed Lil Johnny Football. He played fast and loose, sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
Oh, you mean the play where the OL missed an easy stunt and Knowles had a hot route and didn't look for the ball?
00:16:20–00:16:33
Watch the play again. Logan saw the blitz and clutched looking right at Knowles. Knowles wasn't looking for the ball. Logan should have taken the sack, but there was a whole funky butt-loving load of pooch screw on that play.
Thanks French ;)
I'm willing to agree with him about the BC game. Charley Meyer had a couple of drops that killed drives when he came in for the Paper Boy. If Byrn was still in, we may have won that game.
If Kyle Fuller was in, we DEFINITELY would have won that game.
*Every game
Well, as long as we are doing a LT breakdown, how about his 4 pick performance against Duke? I think half of those were tipped passes (drops), half of them were poor throws that never were in range of a receiver. Pretty muchs sums it up. Some can be blamed on others, some you just gotta own.
IIRC 2 were tips, one was where the WR quit on the route on what would have been a decent pass and one was an outright poor choice.
LT owns 1 of 4 on that day.
I'm pretty sure one of the tipped passes he had a guy wide open deep. IIRC, he double clutched and second guessed throwing deep on the play.
/handwank also we drink during the game regardless
way to be six months late with the joke todd
Way to step to it Aaron! Aaron does not fear the Twit-verse-sphere!
"I like what he's all about"
Todd McShay is a complete buffoon. I hold his opinion on anything with about the same amount of respect as I have for other people's farts. The guy makes crap up (Jayron Hoesly having "short arms" for instance), knowing that not enough people know enough about the subject to call him on it. He's like the catholic priests during the middle ages who didn't speak latin, so just made up gibberish during mass.
Someone should ask him how his mock 53.0 draft is looking?
Also, is he just watching the games now? Wasn't he releasing rankings during the season? Or is this just so he can claim to have watched "tons of tape" later?
Has anyone ever asked McShay how many passes he completed at University of Richmond on the scout team?
They didnt have receivers for him - they set up tackling dummies
thats why he is so scarred by dropped passes.
BOOM!
He doesn't remember his completion percentage, claimes a lot of drops by WR though.
This could of been funny during the season, but over three months after? Does he know jokes have an expiration date?
In McShay's Defense...
The rest of the offense made leaps and bounds throughout the season, but in the beginning it was rough. Like, really rough. I can't think of another game with more drops, college or pro, than the Alabama game.
>>Don't know how L. Thomas' family stomached watching 4th QTR vs. BC. Faulty pass pro=sacks/hits. WRs fall on routes. And drops,drops,drops...
just curious what you people expect.... do you really think our pass pro in that quarter was ok?
do you really think our wrs didn't fall on the routes?
do you really think we didn't drop balls?
face it McShay is probably 100% correct, and our offense has sucked for years now
if not for Williams and Wilson and TT, I shudder to think how bad this sh**show would have been
Grimes, Morehead, Loeffler have essentially said this in polite terms (polite to their new boss)... VT's offense was a complete sh**show
hope our new guys can turn it around... submarket salaries and Frank's offensive offensive strategy ("do no harm") make this turnaround a very risky proposition
Is it true? Of course, French and the gang have covered here in nearly real time. The problem I have with this is why now from McShay, on twitter? Is he helping LT out? Maybe, I doubt NFL scouts and GM's take McShay's advice though.
Now, because the draft is approaching, and he's (re)watching game file on players. On twitter b/c it's a media outlet, and he's part of the media.
Let's face it, VT wasn't exactly the most exciting team for an outsider to watch in 2013. I devote a good deal of time (probably too much) to reading VT football blogs, posts, stats, etc. I keep an eye on the top 10-20, and that's all I have time to follow. Do you really expect Todd McShay, who has to devote his time to teams having more exciting seasons, to watch game film on an 8-5 team every week? Come on now, let's be realistic.
Again, you're completely overthinking this. McShay's goal isn't to help out Logan. If GM's wanted his advice, he would have a job as GM/consultant of some sort. His job is to study players. Someone at ESPN probably asked him to cover Logan Thomas, he did, and he tweeted what he thought. He's paid to give analysis before the draft, not to analyze the starting QB of an 8-5 ACC team.
It's negligent because there's context to everything. The receivers dropped way too many balls against Alabama, however the underneath passing attack was something no one expected to blossom last year. There's a reason VT signed all those receivers and potential wideouts in February, the position wasn't good enough. But as a group, their play improved over the season.
they did grow as a group and I'm genuinely excited to see what Josh Stanford does this season along with Willie Byrn! GO HOKIES!!!
Improved? Yes. Played hard? Generally, yes. Better run blockers? Definitely better than 2012.
But unfortunately -- as McShay righty points out -- still neither sure-handed, explosive, nor dependable even fairly late in the season. With so few strengths, it was hard to hide the flaws. I'm glad Morehead sticks up for his guys, but you can bet he and Loeffler AND the opposing defensive coaches were fully aware of these deficiencies.
Hopefully, with some additional experience and a new body or two, they'll be able reduce and hide the flaws better in 2014.
Inherited deficiencies lets remember
Inherited...and probably inherent as well.
well what do you expect. we're passionate about our team. we're gonna defend them, flaws and all.
not addressed to you necessarily, but LT3 is going to have lots written about him as there is thing thing called the draft coming up
LT3 is a lightning rod of controversy for those of you who don't know
developing an interesting controversial POV that is well defended is part of the media's job
be it Mr. McHair, Mr. McShea, Mr FormerDB... that is what they have to do
could certainly see McShea developing a vignette showing LTs performance in clutch time during the BC 4th quarter... we lost the game... it was a bit of a shootout... how'd this 3rd year starter perform? as a fan I'd be interested... as a GM/HC I wouldn't turn away.
however, its pretty much a lose lose situation for VT....
1)he slams LT3 and has a good case.... maybe LT3 goes lower in the draft and this does nothing to help recruiting
2)he slams WR play, line play, points out some positive LT3 contributions, maybe others see his point maybe LT3 goes higher in the draft and this helps us with recruiting, but slams our offensive development a bit
I'd take 2 personally, because I think anyone considering VT will understand in short order how bad our offense has been, but if LT3 could go in R2(living the dream) I think that would fit in well with the new coaches, strong draft / NFL potential pitch.... but those of you who think these guys make stuff up that is totally unsubstantiated... you're just flat out wrong....noone would listen to them if that were the case and they would lose their jobs... they don't have to live with their opinions like a GM or HC does, but I guarantee they try to have an opinion that both the uninformed public can relate to and a GM or HC will use as a guidepost for a deeper dive.
JMHO
Alright so here's my take:
1) For better or worse, all sports commentators are entertainers. They need to have a non-vanilla spin to their analysis for them to garner traffic. The rare exceptions are guys like French who's insight is so in-depth and unique that their work speaks for themselves. Most of them will speak in hyperbole or in Skip Bayless' case, loudly and illogically.
2) Was McShay's response tawdry? Of course. Was it based on a logical, coherent argument? Absolutely. The WR corps as a whole dropped way too many passes this year. They vastly improved throughout the year and showed the greatest amount of growth out of any position group this year. A lot of credit has to go to Moorehead for their improvement but he and the WR corps dropped the ball this year. They were awful in the Alabama game. A real argument can be made that they significantly contributed to the Duke and BC losses. Simply put, they need to get better.
3) I love that Moorehead responded back to McShay but I didn't like the way he did it. A few of you may remember that I didn't like how Shane shot back at Steve Fairchild before the UVA game. There's an art of dealing with criticism, especially with how widespread McShay's reading base is. I would have preferred a "motivation for spring ball" or "we're going to prove you wrong"-type of tweet instead of calling McShay an idiot. It comes off as childish and a little classless. Don't get me wrong, I love Aaron Moorehead and he's done an incredible job so far but he could of handled it better.
4) Look at the tape of the 4Q of the BC game. McShay isn't wrong, he's just an asshole.
Turkey leg. But if McShay is an a$$hole, then what is Mel Kiper Jr?
I have heard Kiper admit he was wrong on a prospect after the guy panned out.
I have NEVER seen a McShay retraction.
#4- BELIEVE IT!
as for Moorehead, within twitterville - anything goes. But I think since McShay did not 'tweet' this directly, going after him personally is out of line. Above all, its refreshing to see a coach step up and admit faults. Alot of coaches simply ignore criticism. Some could see it as 'class' to do so, but its also a cop out. (and even an EX-cop out) GO HOKIES!
I don't so much have a problem with the way Moorehead handled that. He is sticking up for his kids publicly. He rides them hard but they know he has their back.
I liked it because he insulted mcshay and owned up to his position's shortcomings.
It was and indictement on the way McShey presented it as unfitting a professional while acknowledging the underlying truth of the statement.
yeah that too
Ahem. I think I'd like to weigh in on this with some words of wisdom. Dear Mr. McShay:

McShay nonsense aside, I will take listening to him bash our receivers all day over listening to Mel Kiper say any words at all
This hot take of his aside, I think McShay and Jason La Canfora should have a contest to see who can say more untrue things.
I think McShay had a hot flash...
I clicked on this thinking it would be pertinent to the future of our WR's/program.
I was wrong.
