The Ladies travel to Cassell North today to play LOLUVA. The #5 Ladies are 23-5, 14-3 and have locked up the No. 1 seed in the ACC tournament. The Cavaliers are 14-14, 6-11 and tied with Ga Tech, who plays at Miami today, for 10th place. GA Tech has the head to head tiebreaker against UVA. Neither team can finish higher than 10th place. Since JPJ arena has more seats than Cassell, this game could be the largest attendance ever for a women's BBall game in Virginia.
The Cavaliers do not have a good record, but they did beat Louisville, FSU and UNC this year. So they have the potential to give us a good game.

UVA is not a particularly tall team. The starters are 5'8, 5'7, 6'2, 6'2 and 6'2. They do have 6'7 grad student #41 Taylor Lauterbach, who plays regularly but not many minutes. They have played a lot of players this year. 11 of the 13 players who have played this year average 10 or more minutes per game. The starters play 20-30 min/game.

Only two players average double digit scoring; but 6 more average 6-10 ppg. They shoot 40% overall and 31% from three and make a little over 7 three's per game. Everyone except #34 Clarkson will step out and take a 3 point shot. Only #20 Taylor shoots better than 33%; and she has only taken 20 3pt shots on the year. They are a good FT team at 77.6% from the line.
They have won the rebounding battle on the season by 4.6 rebounds/game with only one player averaging more than 6 rebounds/game and everyone else under 4.5. Two players Taylor, 3.5, and Clarkson, 3.2, average over 3 fouls per game. As a team they average 2.5 more fouls than their opponents. Who knows what that means with ACC refs.

Even though this is a home game for UVA, I expect there will be a big contingent of Hokie fans in the arena and this may feel more like a Hokie crowd than a Cavalier crowd, especially if we can get an early lead. UVA does not have the players to blanket Kitley like Notre Dame did and hopefully Amoore will not have another poor shooting game.
Hopefully the Hokies can win easily and build momentum heading into the ACC Tournament.
LET'S GO HOKIES!

LET'S GOOOOOOOOO!
HOKIES
Watching the previews & tourney predictions for other teams & players during the early games, they keep showing highlights from Cassell and knowing how those turned out...why? π
Sounds like a very pro hokies crowd so far
Ugh. 4 turnovers already.
Girl goes from bodying Kitley to knocking Wenzel out of bounds but nothing to see here
London Clarkston....what a LOLUVA name....
Looks like UVA was playing games on what is GA seating trying to force Hokies fans into the upper deck. Seeing social media posts from a bunch of people that were forced to move or directed that they had to go up.
Also interesting that the cameras only seem to focus on areas of UVA fans
Hokies fans were loud at the start. When we get rolling they'll be loud again and it won't matter who they show in the crowd.
They were crowing about the crowd UVA brought even as we were hitting shots and you could tell who was cheering.
Tbh they're probably not used to fans in the upper bowl of the arena lol
We look shook with all these mistakes. Just settle down
Teams have decided to double Georgia off the pick and roll and we haven't quiet figured out how to counter yet
Ladies need to avoid their typical terrible 2nd Quarter now.
I see the cheating flashing strobe electronic sign reflection bullshit is in full effect again whenever we have the ball. How the fuck is that allowed? Why do they still get away with this bush league shit?
Kitley seems to be back in form
9 and 8 already for liz.
Sure hope Kenny is bringing kitley back in
I thought she was at two fouls but announcers saying one.
assume he was using the upcoming tv TO as the time to put her back in
Sloppy with the ball
Looked like shot clock had expired before that three. Kenny should ask for review
def looked late
Ekh called for travel with the UVA guard hanging on her arms
Ekh got pinballed by two players but it's a travel
That's as bad as officiating gets.
Yup
Well if we can manage to avoid double digit turnovers in the second half, we should win easily
they have 14 points off of our 11 turnovers. no good!
Looks like Louisville got the same officials at Notre Dame that Hokies did. The highlights of their "defense" showed four clear fouls.
How many of these "travels" have been shoves?
At least four
Clarkson was on the floor because she fouled Amoore shooting
Let's keep drawing the fouls here....
Gotta get some scoring from others besides kitley and amoore
Uh oh. That doesn't look good.
Stomach just dropped out
Please just be a stinger.
Didn't see the landing but looks like left knee injury.
Fucking dirty
Kitley tore her ACL in high school. She acted like she knew what happened as soon as Brooks came over
seeing the replay that's my fear. Hopefully its just jammed and a few days of rest & ice will be enough to get her back for the NCAAT.
I hope Liz is ok, but she was shaking her head that it wasn't good
Yeah...I didn't like that body language unless she was saying I'm not ready to get up yet.
Seeing she went to the locker room on social media
That girl nearly tackled summiel but nothing
That's like the 4th time she's traveled
Gotta spread the points around. We have 4 girls that have scored so far, and only 2 of the starters.
Girl takes four steps before that whistle
Stop letting Baker shoot she's missed three in a row by a freaking mile
So strange. She has shot it so well from outside all season long. Those misses weren't even close
The flashing lights at UVA were affecting her aim.
Strack really needs to step up here.
Ok. I can breathe again.
Kitley seemed to have no trouble jumping up to her feet on that put back by Strack.....
Liz is back on the bench! Fingers crossed...
I thought i saw her mouth "in not coming back in" π’ but I hope I'm wrong
is it me or has our transition game been absolute π©
UVA is doing the same thing ND did Thursday night. Driving it up quick, and we don't stop the ball. Our perimeter defense has struggled to stay in front of them all night long.
Could this be a Willis Reed moment?
Haha, half the guys on this thread aren't old enough to know who that is. I was think Kirk Gibson, but the same thought applies.
Yeah, I realized that after I said it. I'm old.
We. We are old.
I resemble that remark!
Even if not.....it's really encouraging she walked out on her own with no boot, sleeve, etc.
At this point, you Don take a risk with her ina meaningless game.
I tend to agree. See what the rest of the team can do, even if she's cleared to come back into the game.
Points off of turnovers currently 16 to 10. That could end up costing us this game more than anything else.
I feel a couple big baskets by Ekh coming....she needs to get involved.
How TF was that a foul on strack
why is Eck not in?
Seems like Brooks is trying to go smaller on the perimeter to contain the dribble drive.
Hell of an assist by King there
Georgia Amoore is HER. But she's gonna need some help π
The screen was 10 feet away wtf does it even matter?
These refs are bullshit. Single handedly giving uva the game
That's a SHIT CALL
How can it be an illegal screen 10 ft away from the player with the ball?
If was an illegal screen because the UVA player hit her so hard she had to take a step.
What a joke. I am so sick and tired of these girls getting jobbed every single game
Nice carleigh
Ugh
What a horrible time to fuck up a simple handoff
Or not call a foul despite her fouling both of our players to get the steal.
this too
total lack of awareness on that play
Wenzel in a nutshell tbh. Great move for the layup the possession prior. Then a giant brain fart at the worst time
wasn't Amore the one with the ball and tried to hand it off?
Yes
Unfortunately I don't think this team is gonna be winning anything in March.
Zero depth behind Georgia. Wetzel isn't it. No one on this team can dribble. Refs were bad but we just shit the bed.
Can Taylor have gotten away with more elbows this half?
Jesus you got to get that rebound
Do they ever call over the back?
Nice to know I wasn't the only one who saw that.
Virginia had three players with three fouls each two minutes into 3rd quarter and yet all three still have three fouls
I don't understand not putting in Micheaux there to get some size on the block for rebounding.
That girl had at least a foot out of bounds on that play
Yeah, but those officials had been told who was winning before the game got started based on their officiating throughout.
we rushed that shot...
All teams learned today is that you can foul the shit out of us and the refs probably won't make you pay. Bonus points if you can take out the ACC player of the year. No drawback, really
You're kidding your self if you think that contact did anything.
How many of our travels or jump balls were uncalled fouls? How many points did we miss out on because they took out Liz? GTFO
correct - many of our turnovers were things we were getting fouls called on the other end. I disagree that they took out Liz, though. It was pretty light contact and nothing egregious
she landed wrong. It wasn't malicious and there was no more contact on that play than you would normally see on a lightly-contested layup.
This^^^
UVA traveled egregiously (ball on hip for several steps) and then we got called for a foul. We got bump fouled into taking steps and the call was travel on us.
In the paint was the usual mugging with few calls on UVA's end. On defense, we stand straight up and get whistled.
Refs seemed terrible and I'm entirely not qualified to debate that but get over yourself if you think that was anything except a freak accident. Take off the maroon colored glasses
As much as I hate to lose to LOLUVA, in reality this game didn't mean anything. We still are #1 seed in ACCT. We probably lose a seeding spot or two. We just need to beat Loserville and win the ACC and we're back on the 1/2 line. Think that's why they did t bother bringing Liz back or making desperate moves late. Just play it out (safely) and hope to win.
So how far do we fall now in the NCAA tourney bracket? 4 seed?
I dont think it matters where we land. We need a gut check after this week after the ND loss and getting hounded by a .500 team that was in the bottom third of our conference. If we can't figure out how to get anyone not named Kitley or Amore to score points we're going to have an early exit in both tournaments.
12/13 at a minimum by taking two Ls. That's 3/4 seed land.
Looks like we're 11th, but don't worry, NCST is ranked above us again at #10.
Without Liz we will lose in the first game of the tourney. I think we sacrificed building depth and developing the bench this year in order to help Liz and Georgia pad their all time stats. Not a popular opinion but they played late into the 4th quarter of almost every game despite us being up by 20-30 points the entire first half of the season. Wetzel is worse now than she was at the start of the year as she lost her confidence and never got it back. Suffren never saw the court despite being extremely fast and athletic. We have one serviceable guard. We have one capable ball handler. That's kind of crazy for a top 5 team.
I won't down vote you, but this is not it. This is Kenny's style - if you want to go back to the coach wolf days, fine by me
Suffren got some good play time when Amoore was out with the concussion. She shows a lot of promise. I would have liked to have seen her get a couple more minutes down the stretch.
Bottom line for this game is we had 17 turnovers! They outscored us 21-13 on points off turnovers. This was not good. They also outscored us 19-12 on second chance points. Also not good.
Also need to add, they were 22-29 FT, while we were only 9-13.
But I think this sums it up appropriately. They had several turnovers that were called fouls on us and we had several plays that were clear fouls on them and we got called for a turnover. That affects the points off turnovers and free throw differential.
Ekh, Summiel, King, and Baker were a combined 2 for 18. OUCH!
Yeah Baker bricked like 4 threes where she didn't even hit the rim. She hits her average and we win by 1?
Add Kayla hitting hers and it's a blowout....
That unfortunately is the reality of the game, the refs bias aside. Ekh was blanked, King has been off for half the season. Summiel is effectively Beede, absolutely great at defense and rebounding, but a ZERO on offense. Baker had an off night.
As was said above, this was a meaningless game for us. Yes it will hurt our national ranking, and pride, but it did affect us in the ACC. Let's hope Liz is good to go moving forward and we start another winning streak on Friday. LET'S GO!!
PS- can someone post a link to Coach's press conference if/when he talks about Liz?
He was tearing up.
When asked if he thought about resting players
Anybody heard any good news about Liz yet? π
Anywhere from bone bruise to ACL, according to TechLunchPail.com, but nothing from the team.
I doubt there will be anything official until tomorrow after an MRI and other evaluation.
I also suspect they may be keeping the result quiet so whoever we play friday has to prepare for both
I was at that game and what was frustrating to me was how tentative every VT player was who wasn't #5 or #33. Except for Baker who was like 1 for 12 (or so it seemed) from 3-pt range. Strack did well filling in for Kitley but got called for too many fouls. Tilly got swarmed every time she touched the ball, so give some credit to the Hoo D, I suppose. But what lost the game for us was almost ZERO production out of the rest of the team other than Kitley, Amoore, or Strack. Amoore was astounding but it shouldn't have all been on her shoulders. The team needs to figure out who else can step up, or else they will quickly be eliminated in the upcoming tournaments.
My guess is Strack has practiced primarily at the 4 recently, because she was mostly fouling due to being a bit out of position. I suspect she gets the run at the 5 this week in practice, and I'm curious if Kenny brings Rose back into the rotation to spell her, or if we shift Summiel into the 5 and play a "small" lineup at times. If we play Carolina again they aren't a huge team, so spacing might work better by getting Baker, King, Eck, Georgia on the floor together.
I'd really like to see more Wenzel at the 2 with Georgia with Eck and Baker on the floor, because I think she has good handles, can play D, and at least can get to the basket. If King's shots aren't falling, she's basically just a defender and occasional ball handler since she doesn't really create her own shot.
Hopefully Georgia is up for another big run like she had last post season, cause we're gonna need it.
Since we are Virginia Tech sports fans of course, our one magical women's basketball run came up against the dirtiest coach in women's college basketball and her thug team. Last year was fun while it lasted, but of course LSU was bigger, better. Hope you enjoyed it
