So how do things look for an NIT bid?

I feel like we need 5 ACC teams to make the tourney so we need to root for Pitt and..... UVa (eww).

The NIT would probably take 2-3 ACC teams between Cuse, Wake, NCSU and VT. Round 1 would be a must win for any NIT consideration.

Lunardi had the Hokies in the next four out last week before beating Louisville and Notre Dame (not that Lunardi really is that good at picking.) I would think beating FSU is a must win, beating UNC (Not seeing it) might actually boost them to a shot at last four in as crazy as that sounds. They would be 20-14 (assumes loss in ACCC.) Win it though and it's off to never never land.

19-14 likely gets us into NIT although no idea what seed. It was their record last season getting in with two less conference wins. 18-14 probably not enough I would expect although last year's NIT had 17-15 Seton Hall and 17-16 Villanova both as 6 seeds. Florida at 16-16 was a 4 seed. Ok St was a 1 seed at 18-14. Wash St was a 4 seed at 17-16. Alcorn was a 7 seed at 18-13 and UCF was a 5 seed at 18-14. Really comes down to how many ACC teams get into NCAAs and then how many NIT is willing to take. If ACC gets 6 into NCAAs then I expect Hokies will be in NIT whether they win or not against FSU but a win would probably mean hosting at least one game.

NIT made changes to their selection criteria starting this year though so not sure how that will effect Hokies. Regular season conference champions that do not make the NCAAs are no longer guaranteed an NIT spot.

The NIT will use the NET rankings to select the top 2 remaining NET teams from each of ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC. That will be 12 of the field of 32. Those 12 are guaranteed to host games. The remaining 20 spots are then selected by the committee with the top 4 also hosting with the Top Four Teams Out in NCAA getting preference.

NIT will also use NBA Standard 16 ft wide Free throw line widening the paint by 4 feet over standard, although not sure how they are employing that with host sites. My guess would be schools have to lay down an applique paint area over existing floors.

They also changed the location from Vegas to Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis (no coincidence that Indianapolis is also home to the NCAA offices.)

Interesting, I didn't realize they changed things up with the NIT selection criteria. It sounds like the new format is really in place to benefit the P6 schools.

We are 7th in NET ranking amongst the ACC schools at the moment.

But what a dumb idea to host the championship game in Indianapolis. There is literally zero reason to make a spontaneous trip there in April. They would be better off just hosting the game at the highest ranked team left in the Final 4. Certainly would be a much better atmosphere.

Unfortunately not the first time NCAA has elected using local homerism
