Not a fan of taking those fouls so far out there. Easily could have waited as they went into paint. Left too much time for them to run the set play at the end.

i missed both of our regular season games against FSU... are we that evenly matched against them that this will basically come down to the final 2 minutes barring any poor play or hot shooting on either side?

Unfortunately because FSU was only whistled for 1 foul in first half they can afford to be extremely physical in the second. Beran headed to bench already doesn't help.

Athleticism means what it means from my perspective - what it always means with this VT squad. No need for any of us to try and sugar coat it or explain it away. It is what it is.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
OK... what does it mean from your perspective? How is it different from what I posted?
I'm not sugar coating anything or explaining anything away.. just adding some detail beyond "athleticism" because I get pushback all the time from people who say our team is "athletic enough to win games" and ignore bad matchups like these that highlight how we are, on average, a tier or two down from the level of top teams.

Easy killer... My post wasn't attacking you. I was just clarifying my perspective as most on this site think we are athletic enough. We all on the same team here.

Also, Kidd has got to work on rebounding this offseason. He is so incredibly bad at it for his size and athleticism. No clue how many times this year i've seen him just get out competed on the boards.

Not disagreeing with you about Kidd, but its a CMY/team problem, not just a Kidd problem.

Honest question do you think any of Mike Young's players actually want to play for him or are they just taking their chances to play in the ACC? There are so many games that our team doesn't look like they have any fun being out there.
2.5 million per year with an amazingly high buyout must be incredibly nice knowing the expectations are just to be mediocre..

At 18-14 Hokies likely looking at a 3 seed in NIT I expect. That's assuming Wake gets into NCAAs and Florida St loses to UNC. If Wake loses today or FSU beats UNC and loses in ACCC then that likely bumps Hokies out of auto bids for ACC and then seeding is a toss up.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
One thing to note is that this could be another NIT that the Hokies might be a higher seed but are forced to go on the road if it conflicts with Women's NCAA games, assuming the ladies are selected to host.

I'm as frustrated as everyone else, but an 18 win season is probably what we all should have expected with the Rice departure. I'm not saying we shouldn't be disappointed, but it is the ceiling for this team.
CMY has a serious roster issue. He has had to rebuild it every offseason, and this offseason will be no different. I do think it will be more difficult though. Losing Cattoor is HUGE. I'm not sure he will be able to replace that productivity and defensive acuity. Additionally, if you look ahead even more, following next year the roster rebuild will be a much more monumental task. One that I think will show us that CMY really isn't cut out for ACC basketball. And that isn't a knock on CMY. Hell, maybe if we had hired him instead of James Johnson (long before the NIL era), VT basketball would be in a completely different place today.
In any event. CMY certainly has some work to do. But in the end, we are who we are - an unathletic team that wins and loses based on the 3 point shot.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Disagree- nobody would have signed up for a 2-11 road neutral acc record and loses to the bottom of the conference. Nobody. Not all 18 wins are created equal.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
My point. I would have been happy with the right 18 wins. Some road wins, a win over UNC, etc. But not being horrid on the road and another dud as a higher seed.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
anything less than a .500 road record is an indicator that the NIT might be your ceiling for the year... we simply weren't tough enough on the road and it showed once again today.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Defense. 2nd half Free Throws. Very little off ball movement on offense the 2nd half. Horrible rebounding effort. All of those things were significant issues today. Combine that with the fact that when defended on the perimeter we simply cannot score, this is the result.
EDIT: if any one of these issues were fixed at some point, then this game might have had a different outcome.

Man, I left for my 2 PM meeting and we were ahead in the first half looking pretty good. Finished my meeting and pulled up the score to see how much we won by... Ugh. I am going to miss Cattoor. I think Mike needs to think about his scheme, maybe introduce some zone concepts and be able to run the offense to Kidd and Poteat as big men in their senior year next year.

If this is the last game of the season (I think NIT is 50/50), there is one silver lining about today's game: 89.5% of today's scoring has eligibility next season.
But yeah, we desperately need an infusion of athleticism to get back into the top half of the ACC.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The new NIT selection criteria actually favors the Hokies getting in. They are using NET rankings as a bug criteria and no longer will give autobids to small conference regular season champions that don't make the NCAAs.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
But is Pedulla coming back an asset or liability? He is a turnover machine that makes bad decisions, lazy passes, is a point guard with more turnovers than assists, and has even lost his own dribble. He reminds me more and more of Deja Kelly from UNC, every time she scored more than 22 points, they lost the game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
He's also the only person on our team that can score for long stretches of a game and a much better shooter at this point than Rechsteiner- Ironically signed for his amazing shooting.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
There are times his hero ball have gotten us wins, but there have also been close games that became routs because of his turnovers. I just wish he would be consistent.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I am disappointed in the development of Rech and Wessler. Although Custis did a good job of making Kidd into an ACC player. But Rech needs to be that "dude" and Big Pat is not a stiff- he can move and play- so I need to see more development there- Imagine a 7 foot post player that can score? We haven't had that in since- ever.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree with your general premise, but disagree about Wessler. Big Pat is absolutely a stiff. He has cinder blocks for feet. He has zero ability to move, slide or get in a remotely reasonable position. He's one of the least talented 5's I've ever seen at VT.
Can he be developed a little? Maybe. But seriously, he does not possess the raw talent that would allow him to compete in the ACC.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
overall Pedulla played really well the last month of the season. cut his turnovers way down, shot better percentages, played C+ defense instead of D+ defense.
I think a big part of that was giving him a mental break by having Collins bring the ball up the court about 25% of the time and getting him some rest during games.. overall his minutes were down about 10% this year and his PER and other advanced stats were all a nice bump higher.
similarly Collins played a lot better down the stretch.. his last 7-8 games he tripled his shooting percentages compared to the first 7-8 games this season.
hopefully both of those guys can carry that progress into next season and we backfill Cattoor with a couple 6'5-6'6 SG/Wing type players to get more size in the backcourt. We could use another 6'8 - 6'10 F as well. Set at C with Kidd, maybe Poteat and the FR. But the FR is short, so we need to be able to pair him with a tall F.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Pedulla is one of those frustrating players if you're a fan, but I don't think we'd want to know what the season would have been like if he wasn't on the team. I'm not sure we win 10 games this season without Pedulla.
I think on a better team with more scoring options he wouldn't make some of the turnovers he makes, because he wouldn't have to shoulder so much of the offensive load. But to me he's clearly the most talented offensive player on the team, and that includes Cattoor.

Not true! Sean did a NIL shoutout video for my boys and told them about coming to the Burg and how much he loves it! I was hard on Sean at the beginning of the year but I think he dramatically improved over the course of the year and only forced it and went "alone" from time to time because there were no better options. Going to be interesting to see where FSU ends up in next NET Rankings based on their loss to UNC by 25 today. Impacts where Hokies slate into NIT. Hokies should finish above them with 3 fewer losses as I believe today's game put FSU at 17-17.
Hokies could also use a Wake win over Pitt but Pitt currently leading by 9 with 16 to play.
Clemson losing puts them back on bubble which doesn't help Hokies.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Still means Hokies are on the edge of autobid if ACC only gets 5 in. Means ACC 6th and 7th get the autobid. Hokies definitely need NC St to lose to Duke today. Wake and UVA are both at risk of not making NCAAs, especially if UVA loses today, which would only give the ACC 4 bids including Pitt. Virginia is 52 in NET as of this week, Wake was 36.
Last week's NET had Hokies 7th in ACC.

The fix was in for UVA last night with about 5 minutes to go, TV Teddy started calling everything everything against BC and ignoring UVA fouls. I watched UVA badly attempt to shoot 12 free throws to none for BC in that time period. BC was ahead up till then.

Looks like it's going to be ACC Rugby today
Let's goooo
First time seeing some of these players in person.
Poteat is one huge dude. Holy smokes.
And he can potentially come back next year. With his and Kidd's improvements this year, I would love to see what they can do next year.
I dislike scheduling any basketball games during the work day. Get two courts and run two games at the same time at night.
$$$....
Why have 2 courts, when you can have 1 effectively halving the amount of available tickets and then forcing you to buy a complete package...
But I dont mind the mid-day games personally.
i just checked in and we quickly blew the lead... my fault... what's up with Hunter? 3 points with <1 minute left in the half???
being tightly guarded, and constantly grabbed when he makes a cut
Not a fan of taking those fouls so far out there. Easily could have waited as they went into paint. Left too much time for them to run the set play at the end.
That was a brutal stat. FSU has converted every turnover into points.
Fortunately we've only had 5 turnovers. Not great, but not bad. So it's 11-3 points off turnovers.
Bad news is 3 turnovers in the first 4 minutes of the second half. 4 more points for them. SMH
i missed both of our regular season games against FSU... are we that evenly matched against them that this will basically come down to the final 2 minutes barring any poor play or hot shooting on either side?
Unfortunately because FSU was only whistled for 1 foul in first half they can afford to be extremely physical in the second. Beran headed to bench already doesn't help.
FSU really flexing right now. Our lack of athleticism really shows in games like this. Hopefully we can make some shots.
athleticism in this sense means size, handle, quickness
FSU is playing a defensive style that you have to defeat by driving the lane (or having officials who will call grabs and bumps)
Athleticism means what it means from my perspective - what it always means with this VT squad. No need for any of us to try and sugar coat it or explain it away. It is what it is.
OK... what does it mean from your perspective? How is it different from what I posted?

Easy killer... My post wasn't attacking you. I was just clarifying my perspective as most on this site think we are athletic enough. We all on the same team here.
FSU is controlling this game, close to letting it get out of hand i think. if we cant start making shots....
How'd we get to shoot for a technical? I was on the phone with a customer.
intentional foul on FSU.. Collins intercepted a pass and on the fast break was grabbed from behind
intentional awarded upon review
Bilas - "Cattoor getting grabbed on every cut."
FSU get frustrated because they're actually being called for fouls.
ACC refs are amazing. FSU one foul in the first half, and now ten in the second. Did they all get new glasses at halftime?
CMY doing a good job trying to ugly this game up as it's become very physical.
He might be an average coach throughout the season (his record says as much), but he tends to do his very best work in March.
FSU trying to give this game away and VT won't take it.
I am not sure who is trying harder to give the game away at this point.
Team has a major lazy pass problem
21 points for FSU off of turnovers.
18 points of turnovers for those of you scoring at home or work.
This game is over... too many turnovers!
1/3rd of FSU points off turnovers
Two terrible turnovers in a row. Hopefully some threes will start falling now to help make up for it.
Hey, at least we aren't turning it over every &%%$ time down the court, right?
Also, Kidd has got to work on rebounding this offseason. He is so incredibly bad at it for his size and athleticism. No clue how many times this year i've seen him just get out competed on the boards.
FIFY
Not disagreeing with you about Kidd, but its a CMY/team problem, not just a Kidd problem.
Allowing 21 points off 11 turnovers is atrocious.
Far too much ISO ball. Very little offensive movement.
turned it on and we were down 1 point. I blinked and we're down 10. FML
I have no idea how CMY has any hair left to pull out. Every 3 games we blow it with dumb turnovers.
Not only too many turnovers... we can't rebound... because we don't box out!
So much for threes falling and saving your best for last.
FSU can afford to foul the Hokies every possession now.
Really indicative of this entire season. Man, this sucked.
How are we so bad at passing and in bounding
How many turnovers does Pedulla average per game? It's gotta be like 6 or 7
Shit is gonna make me change my profile picture
Kidd has gotta step up and take that charge
Well at least the frustration of this year is over.
Now we just get to worry about what the hell we will look like next year!
Yet another game when we are completely content trading 2's for 2's
I am so confused right now... we aren't even trying to shoot a 3.
Worley technically committed a Backcourt violation on that inbounds not that it matters
Welp spoke too soon. Now it's huge because they got two points from it
Pedulla forcing a missed shot then fouling out is about right for how we end our season...
Pedulla can be such a liability at the worst moments.
Turn out the lights, the party's over.

Which matters of course since we don't win on the road.
Wofford in the ACC just doesn't work (outside of an insane shooting run in an ACC tournament).
Maybe we shouldn't run everyone out of Blacksburg who can actually CREATE OFF THE BOUNCE? Genius idea.
Time for the clean-up. Good riddance Mike Young.
#Football School.

The problem will be how much of that Tech can retain. The basketball transfer portal hasn't always worked out for us.
someone has to score, bringing back everyone on a team that severely lacks talent is a bad bad bad thing.

Ooof and Wake let them go on another 10-0 run and Pitt leads by 19.
Down to 4. What a roller coaster.
Carlton Carrington sounds like he should play for LOLUVa
Wake got within three and then much like the Hokies fell apart in the final minutes. Pitt wins 81-69.
Likely drops Wake out of the Tournament which hurts the Hokies in NIT.

Not even UVA fans enjoy watching that team play. They won't have to watch for long go, they will likely lose Round of 64
If UVA loses to NC St they may still not make the tournament so would eat an NIT spot. If that happens we have to cheer for NC St to win it all.
UVA should have lost last night. There were basically behind all game until the last five minutes when the officials stepped in. NC State should win.
UVA is in
