At this point I'm just numb. Whatever. I'll start caring about basketball next fall.
Pain.
well damn, Cassell gonna be quiet next year.
Should we make one thread for both women's and men's at this point?
Tyler Nickel is now the most experienced guy on the roster if none of these guys return.
Assuming Nickel returns 😂😪
When does the Mike Young portaling announcement happen? /s hopefully.
I am legitimately wondering if he told the team he is resigning or retiring, but that doesn't make sense either because would have assumed that would have already leaked.
Am I being punked
Entire roster outthere chasing the bag, but we're not a stepping stone 🤣
Ok but seriously there had to be a reason for all this...right?
Kidd and Pedulla made sense, certainly there would be interest and NIL offers for them.
Collins maybe, but less so...lets be honest, kid can't shoot....he's at best a 6-7th man for any team with Tourney Aspirations.
And Poteat is a pure depth guy.
Even as much as I loathe the current NIL/Portal situation,
I can't imagine there isn't more behind this.Edit: peruse the 24/7 Portal Tracker....VT is hardly alone in terms of numbers in the Portal. This may be becoming an evolving strategy, since you can now go in the portal endlessly...just do it every year and try to make some cash.
Mike Young is Justin Fuente 2.0
Maybe he's bringing better players in?
Or, maybe he's pulling players from McComas.
Or Football is using his scholarships for depth... at this point might as well.
Make it stop....
There's no recovering from this I'm afraid
But seriously, what's the chances of us holding onto Ryan Jones now?
Lots of minutes available!
I believe Ryan Jones already signed his LOI so I think it would be tough to get out of unless there's a coaching change.
At this point, this has to be some kind of organized protest, right?
Did Tristan Mulcahey change hair gels?
Did they switch the light fixtures from 4000k to 3500k?
I mean... what is going on?
It could only be.....Turkey Bacon
OK, ok, well, now maybe that makes some sense. I mean, it'd run me off...
I tried that once, nasty.
we have 2 people in my family with Alpha Gal so turkey bacon is the norm. Whenever I have to travel for work, I go back to real bacon and, I gotta say, it's amazing.
have friend who has that- violently nauseous with any red meat; took years to diagnose too so she was miserable without knowing what was causing it til last year.
TIL. I had to do a web search, because I read "Alpha Gal" and all I could think of was "Girl Boss."
Alpha Gal = Gal Gadot?
I mean, real bacon is tops but turkey bacon isn't really that bad
Maybe they didn't want to play in the NIT
What in the actual fuck is going on???
According to 247, we've made contact with the following transfer portal entrants, who have yet to commit:
Jacob Crews - UT-Martin 6-8 F - 4* rated transfer
Camren Hunter - Central Arkansas 6-3 G - 4* rated transfer
Jacob Meyer - Coastal Carolina 6-2 G - 3* rated transfer
JP Pegues - Furman 6-1 G - 4* rated
Gibson Jimerson - St. Louis 6-5 G - 4* rated transfer from Richmond, VA
Dante Maddox - Toledo 6-2 G
According to 247, all of the 4* rated players are higher rated than what we are losing to the portal (yes, Rice included)
Is this like some high schooler sending DMs to celebrities or do we actually have a chance?
I like you, do you like me?
Check Yes or No
Xoxo
CMY
Better than this I guess?

Why do I get the feeling it's going like this
These are just reported contacts. Chance goes up with being able to offer starters minutes in the ACC but that only comes into play after the bags are handed out by schools with NIL available and one or two significant minutes spots.
The ship isn't actually sinking. Rather, mastermind Mike Young is just wholesale upgrading his roster via the portal.
Jacob Crews committed to Missouri on 3/19, per 247 fwiw
This season was tough to watch. The team often times looked straight up unhappy to be playing. Its going to be more of the same shit next year when all the transfers realize they don't like MY's system/program either OR he lets them loose knowing its his last year anyways.
Even if they lose every game next season and the next I don't see them firing Young with the current financial situation. Young in April has a buyout of $6M. Next April it drops to $4M and then $2M the following season. I think Whit has to let the contract play out without adding an extension.
Agree- Young knows how to coach. He and Whit need to put their heads together and get some guys on staff that can recruit and retain the types of players we need to win in Youngs system in the ACC
Why are these coaches' buyouts so much higher than their expected salary over the timeframe?! It seems asinine to me that there is seemingly more reward in being bad/fired. Sure there are consequences to future employment but if I'm ever paid more to get fired now than to continue working many more years I think I know how things will play out.
Simple- If Young wins the Natty next year, the higher the buyout, the less incentive it is for Kentucky to hire him. Not that it matters in the unlimited money world today, but that is the simple reason for a high buy out- to defer him being poached.
Apparently VT Contract Lawyers don't quite understand who is suppose to benefit with the buyout clause. 6M for CMY but 750k for CKB.
The buyout is essentially equivalent to his salary/supplemental received. Does not include bonuses for certain event thresholds.
Because coaches' agents are negotiating these contracts and want their clients to have job security. If everything goes well, the school only owes the salary. If the school gets a wild hair and the coach ends up on his ass, potentially in such a way that no one else wants to hire him, he gets a golden parachute. But, more importantly, it raises the stakes on the school canning him so that there's not the same hair trigger (unless you are Texas A&M). It comes down to negotiating power. The coaches hold all the cards because there are only a few desirable ones each cycle, but 10x as many openings. If the schools held the power, then the buyout for leaving would be higher than the buyout for firing.
No coach is owed more than the guaranteed salary. Fuente had a guaranteed salary of $14M left when fired, the buyout was $10M, but negotiated down to $8.5M.
A buyout of a coach's salary should be bargained for (1) in relation to the coach desiring an increase of guaranteed salary over incentives and (2) the buyout by the coach to leave for another job.
Young's combined salary this season was $2.75M. Next several seasons escalates to just short of $3M. His buyout equates to about $2M a year.
Can't have your cake and eat it to. You can't have it be cheap to fire a guy AND be expensive for him to leave. No agent is going to let their client agree to that.
edit: never mind, you saw nothing
Big dogged by Stanford
Well, it's tough to compete with those traditional ACC powers... /s
Welcome back!
If "THIS IS HOME", why did you enter the portal? A few days ago, you were looking for a new home or $$ by entering the portal. I'm sorry, but everything seems so disingenuous now, and I feel like if you go in the portal, good luck and goodbye. Maybe I'm just too old school.
I've been thinking over the past few days- if I'm a coach in today's ncaa, I'm telling my guys - you want to transfer to be closer to home, to a system that better highlights your skill set, or we're not meshing...cool, I'll do anything I can to help find a landing spot.
But - if you jump into the portal just hunting a bigger bag, best of luck to you - cause you're not stepping foot back in my gym
In this hypothetical world where you're a college basketball coach, I hope this attitude goes along with a hypothetical $5 million NIL budget per season, otherwise you'll be coaching a bunch of walk-ons.
Wow, changed his mind! He's a great piece to have back, I hope he can split minutes with the freshman coming in and stay in really good shape to play a lot of minutes next year
I certainly understand in today's world why a player would explore their options... especially players that are not going to go pro and get paid.. so, this is it for them. Never gonna hate a player for looking and then staying. Go Hokies.
Hunter's thoughts
I don't have Insta so I can't access...can you summarize?
"He's not yourlyjael, he's Mylyjael"
I'm not your Mylyjael, Buddy!
Just leaving this here:
He shoulda got off that plane in a VT pullover
