Three time ACC player of the year seems like it should qualify. Not sure "everybody" is getting their jersey retired even if you make the standard winning multiple conference POY awards.

I wonder if Georgia going to Kentucky makes her stick here (at least for a year to see how it shakes out). Georgia doesn't really come off the floor and is a pretty ball dominant point guard. I think we saw this year at times where players like Carleigh played more confidently when Georgia wasn't on the floor.
Nelson just sat for a year, and if brooks is bringing Lexi Blue with him too her playing time at Kentucky would be tough. I think she sticks around, might start for us next year and if it doesn't work out she can follow brooks in a year once Georgia is gone (or stick around a win us a natty cause why not)

This one hurts the most, Georgia was our Wbb equivalent of Sam Rodgers and seeing her in that god awful blue just doesn't feel right. It's like if Justin Mutts had done the let's go Hokies chant and the next year was doing the tomahawk chop. I hope she scores 40 points a game and they lose every game by 60

No
You can bet they're not saying "oh i hope Virginia Tech does great next year"
There's no allegiance or loyalty on their part therefore there's none on mine.
Not really gonna care how they do at UK, unless they happen to play us and if that's the case I hope they fail miserably. Like I said, they're very forgettable at this point and going forward.

out of curiosity I checked the kentucky attendance for womens bball.... averaged under 1500 fans a game this year while everyone else is packing arenas. Will be interwsting to see if that trend continues or if new life is breathed in.
Honestly I would enjoy seeing an empty arena in Lexington

I get the sense that Brooks, much like Buzz Williams, prefers to build instead of maintain. And he's had great success in building up. Although the build at UK is going to have to be quick, because they're paying for a top-10 team.

This is an interesting point. I work in the startup space and there are plenty of people who only want to do certain phases. There are leaders great at growing and terrible at sustaining. You also get snake oil salesmen who are juuuust good enough at follow through to keep the image going and then bounce before real rubber hits the road

I do work for a lot of start up companies. Different leaders have different qualities and priorities. Brooks always harped on the building up of the VT program in all facets. It seems like he's a builder.
A lot of people compare the Brooks exodus with Pry, suggesting he'll leave as soon as he can. I do think the P2 influence does change things, but he's been a loyal, watch-it-all-the-way-through type of guy. He always harps on how he expected to stay with Coach Franklin and that it took a special place to get him out of that comfort zone. If he builds up VT, I don't see him leaving unless it becomes apparent that the ACC is just un-coachable. The changing conference landscape could change everything though.

There is also a big difference in football spending vs basketball. We gave Pry a large staff, we have really good football facilities. And while we are light years away from what Georgia is doing, there are only a handful of schools doing those things. Those schools don't look for a 10 win VT coach. So sure an MSU can offer a large salary to the HC, the rest of the package to succeed isn't that mich different.(P2 non withstanding).
So do I want Franklin to stay at State College, yup. But I'm not worried about Vanderbilt or Arkansas or Illinois.

Georgia may have never even played U.S. collegiate basketball but for Brooks encouraging her to do so. Without any prior connection to VT except Brooks, I don't know how you can expect a different outcome. And without family stateside, the Kitleys and Brooks were like her adopted family. So, yea, I would expect her to follow Brooks anywhere he would go, especially with Kitley gone.
I'm very interested to see how Brooks does. My only criticism of his coaching is that he showed too much favoritism. It seemed like there were 2 individuals that received 90% of his attention and the other 13 team members were fighting for that last 10%. And VT seemed vastly unprepared when Kitley went down despite having top recruits and portal transfers on the team.
Undoubtedly he'll have success again, but it will be interesting to see how he does with Amoore sans Kitley.

Agreed that the favoritism was baffling at times. This year I was yelling at the TV to get some subs in the game and get some experience spread out down the bench but it never happened. I guess you could argue he was trying to get the first team enough reos to gel with ekh/summiel/rose joining the rotation, but he left kitley and georgia in way to late in games we were up 20

My other main criticism of Brooks' style is that he relies too heavily on "finesse" and doesn't seem to be able to adjust when refs let the games turn into rugby scrums, which seems to be the case more often than not. If the refs are going to officiate like it's the old school Bad Boy Pistons era then you have to have the physicality and toughness to play that way. Or at least lose your shit and get a tactical technical to get the refs' (and your team's) attention.

yea, this was a quasi-complaint of mine. He developed Kitley into a fade-away, one touch jump-shot specialist instead of an in-the-paint bully. And tbf, Kitley was a master at it. But, she kept getting bullied (and fouled) and all Brooks did was complain about the lack of calls. I think she would have gotten those calls and so many more if she just established herself downlow and was finishing her shots towards the basket. But idk, can I really complain about Brooks developing Kitley into a 3-time ACC player of the year, winning ACC championships, and taking the team to a final four appearance? It's clear finesse works pretty well.

This sucks---its gonna suck even more next year when she is on every single ESPN WBB promo because now she is in their "chosen" Conference.
Again, for the thousandth time--this is why NIL and Unlimited Transfers were a terrible idea.
And for those that complain that the players aren't fairly compensated and coaching salaries are astronomical---what do you think this sort of situation is going to do to Coaching Salaries??
Now, you don't just hire a Coach, you are buying a whole Program wholesale--the more players they can bring with them, the more value they have and P2 programs are going to pony up the dollars. They will continue to be 100% predatory just like this.
UK had ZERO interest in Women's Basketball before Caitlin Clark (and others, but mainly her) gave it a much bigger national stage and what is eminently more important---really the only thing that seems to have even a shred of importance in College Sports anymore----$$$Profit$$$$.
sick of this shit.

So do we pivot back to the facilities arms race now? Kentucky can hire all the coaches, staff, and players, but they can't poach the buildings (probably).

Good luck. The NCAA tourney showed that she's a good player but not great enough to carry a team to the second weekend. Life is much easier when Kitley gives you 30 and 15, and you only have to be the 2nd best player on a team.
If roles were switched with GA hurt and Kitley healthy, VT may still be playing right now.

This is my attitude, as well. Players commit to coaches, not schools. It has always been this way for the majority of players, especially in basketball. The new rules just allow players to go with the coach that recruited them instead of being stuck like they were in the past. The idea of loyalty to a school was always an illusion for most players. It is what it is.
I'm not sad that it's over, I'm glad that it happened.

See, I'm fine with the coaches and players being tight thing. But I agree with others on here that the implication was that the fans were part of the family, too. We gave time, money, vocal chords, etc to the team and were with them as they got their feet under them, then peaked. And when we were getting ready to grieve Kitley moving on and starting to pin our hopes on the future, Brooks and his favorites (notice not all the players), up and bailed.
Going to Kentucky let's her be at all the workouts for Austrailia (Kenny, did I get that right?) Olympic team. WNBA might have meant missing a bunch. NIL money likely more than rookie WNBA pay too.

Guess this means her number won't be retired now
She didn't meet criteria to before. Kitley technically doesn't even but I think we will make an exception.
True. But the criteria is archaic, outdated, and needs to be updated.
It was updated in 2002. What would you like it to be? If everyone gets their jersey retired it's not special.

maybe find some middle ground between everyone and no one???????
it's not hard, you know it when you see it. kitley meets it, amoore doesn't.
Correct which was my point when vtbaz said
nobody was ever suggesting everyone gets in
Unsurprising but lame nonetheless
I wish her nothing but a disappointing season where she stays healthy and always regrets following Kenny.
Fuck it all.
Mackenzie Nelson posted "Miss you already" to Georgia.... Does that mean she is staying?!

Sorry, don't like it. Won't be welcoming her back to campus anytime soon

I have a feeling he'll be on a shorter leash there
This season was at Rupp Arena as well. Next year will be on Campus at newly renovated Memorial Coliseum

I think that predated VT. They don't call him Coach Hog for nothing.
I hope she has an Erick Green type season - personally kills it, while the team flounders and struggles to win a handful of games.
While she watches Duffy take us dancing again
Bye Georgia. You're now just another statistic in our record books. To be a Hokie Legend you have to finish what you start.

The facilities arms race isn't going away...its part and parcel of all of this.
That was one of the "selling points" for UK on Brooks--renovating their on-campus Coliseum.
But the point remains.
If you invest in facilities, at least those stay at the university. Unlike the players/coaches you invest in.
I forgot the "/s"

One of my favorite Hokies. Hate to see her go, but I understand the decision. Thanks Georgia!

I can't help but think of that Ben Folds Five song. Hey Kenny, don't forget to give me back my black t-shirt.
I'm surprised she's not going straight to WNBA considering the mock drafts I've seen
Going to Kentucky let's her be at all the workouts for Austrailia (Kenny, did I get that right?) Olympic team. WNBA might have meant missing a bunch. NIL money likely more than rookie WNBA pay too.
The NCAA WBB is way more popular than the WNBA. Playing in college is worth way more because there are more viewers.
