Kennedy Henry reopens recruitment

This should be the last bandaid from the Brooks era.

Can we just go a day? A single freakin' day without a kick in the nuts?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

We're Tech fans, of course not.

This isn't a big deal. If she commits back to the new staff it works but if she doesn't it gives Megan Duffy a scholarship in 25 to use for someone that wants to be here.

My care-o-meter for college sports in general is dropping daily, so these hurt less each time. It's become a pro-league, but shittier.

I hope in this process she realizes that Tech is a great place whether or not Kenny is coaching there. If not, then best of luck and I hope you succeed for any coach not named Kenny Brooks. #YepStillBitter

Not sure why she was last one to enter.

Maybe she was planning to stay at Tech and in Blacksburg where she's lived half her life until she realized how much animosity her dad was catching for making the move?

She was in Kentucky wearing Kentucky gear at the announcement.

Technically as a walk on entering the portal shouldn't have been required.

You'd think she'd be walking on at Kentucky.

Her being on scholarship is actually the root of alot of the rumors on why Kenny left the way he did. Sounds like Whit firmly denied moving her to a scholarship spot. I imagine he was leaving anyway bit that's been talked about by people more in the know as part of it.

Do you mean he was leaving anyway, but wanted his daughter to have a scholarship at VT?

Seems to me that Whit would have let Brooks have anyone he wanted on scholarship while he was here and successful.

No it was apparently something he wanted to do for this next school year and he got push back on doing it. Not sure if that tipped the scales to him accepting Kentucky's offer but I find it hard to believe that small amount of overall "benefit" was the difference. There are too many millions of dollars more commitment reasons for him to leave but it might be enough for him to be a pissed off father moment to leave in the fashion he did. I am not connected enough to know what's smoke versus actual fire. Just going by what other people who regularly have reliable program insight are saying on social media.

...does the AD have final say on allocation of scholarships instead of the coach? That would be a concerning level of micromanagement, especially given that the coach in question is one of the most successful coaches employed by the school at the time in a relatively visible sport.

it doesn't seem like Whit's style...but what do we know?

Onward and upward

Maybe the AD would need to sign off on it since it is the coaches daughter? I don't know, but I am thinking from a leadership standpoint you would want to keep an eye on nepotism hires, which is not saying the individual does not have the skills needed, but just that it would be something you want to keep an eye on to make sure it is not abused.

Everywhere I have ever been, including my current company, I have seen nepotism hires. Some have been great and absolutely deserved the position and pulled their weight, others not so much.

In a general sense, I'm against nepotism, especially if I have to deal with a subpar employee who only has the job because his uncle is my boss... However, in this case I'd weigh the cost versus the benefit. Would a record setting coach consider this as non-monetary compensation? A perk, say. Will said scholarship cause locker room issues? Kind of a coach's decision, isn't it? I know the scholarship count is way different, but, other than the opportunity cost, how is that different from a football coach handing out a scholarship to a teammate or family member of a recruit we want to land? Was Shane Beamer on scholarship (I really have no idea)? We all wish that Greenburg had landed Curry when at the time the biggest thing going for him was who his daddy was. Would that have been nepotism?

I guess what I'm saying is, on the spectrum of concerning decisions a coach can make given too much freedom, giving a scholly to his daughter (who can ball, though maybe not at elite levels) is pretty far down the list. I can think of ten things that Mulkey has done that I would object to before this.

In the grand scheme, I think it would hurt Brooks more to put her on scholarship if she couldn't play at this level/didn't deserve one otherwise. That would be used against him in recruiting- 100%. I think that if she truly was not a D1/ACC player, Kenny would actually think twice about the message that would send. I also doubt that Whit has a blanket control of all scholarships, and I am 100% sure that if she was a good player, given Brook's track record that Whit would say anything about it. In terms of nepotism, any job you didn't get from a craigslist classified - outside of military or government, etc. most likely came from networking and connections- who you know. Most people were given a "shot" in life by someone before they had experience, etc. I think that's simply how the world works. You hire people you are comfortable with and trust first. Their hard core skills second. That's why most reputable companies do background checks. Point is- nepotism is not the end of the world in most cases, IMO. Do some coaches (Bellichick, Norv Turner, Shannahan) hire their unproven sons? yep. Did Beamer make Shane cut his teeth elsewhere? yep. Not the end of the world.

I would not exclude the military and the government. Many hires in both institutions are based on who you know.

Life is good.

Yeah that one was before Henry's announcement and felt like it was non news except for Daddypry getting into it with Brooks wife for snarky comments. It appears she deleted her back and forth though.

Care to elaborate on that?

Daddypry then said "That's it"

She took offense to this couple comments and they had a few back and forth comments where she said they never saw Gabby play and then she pointed out what Chloe did while here. It was mostly a nothing burger but it was more interaction than the fans got from Kenny.

Daddypry is what's wrong with America and Twitter.

Yeah. Dick comment by "daddypry". Anonymity brings out the worst in folks.

What'd I miss here?

Edit: NM, I really should continue to read down before commenting. *sigh* I do this all the time. Imma leave this up to show how much an idiot I was. Maybe next time I'll think twice. (doubtful)
