He will probably be starting PG

Woooooo! Another piece! Mike Young still has his work cut out for him, but this helps.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

This is huge. Better ball security and improved ability to get to the rim. Now we have to hope Young can bring in Godfrey from Clemson to shore up the frontcourt.

so, for those who know the landscape, are the Hokies overall better, worse, or the same? And with the 3 roster spots left, can they get players in the portal to get back to being an NCAA tournament team?

They have RJ Godfrey visiting tomorrow. 6'8 228 lb forward that played at Clemson last year. Getting him would shore up the front court. The starting guards of Miller and Curry would be much more athletic than Cattoor/Pedulla. Defensively not sure they are much improved but getting to the rim will be greatly improved. Burnham will take on more the Long/Beran role. Rodney slots in very similar to Nickel. I believe Burnham is an improvement but Rodney the jury is out until I see more.

I really hope this doesn't limit Jones and Johnson seeing significant roles. Really want them to contribute as Freshmen.

a more athletic back court would be nice. If they can still shoot like Cattoor and turn the ball over less, that would definitely be an improvement.

Not an expert on Young's system, but having front court guys that could see the court, make that extra pass, etc. seemed to make his system go. I don't think Mutts was especially good, but he was really good in that system. So, whoever is in that front court, I hope they have that vision and pass ability.

In 2023/24, Beran, Kidd and Long averaged 1.1, 1.1 and 1.0 assists a game.
In 2022/23, Mutts and Basile averaged 4.6 and 1.7 assists a game.
In 2021/22, Mutts and Aluma averaged 3.4 and 1.9 assists a game.

Super happy to pick up any experienced players, and I think the backcourt athleticism will definitely be improved, at least offensively.

But Miller does NOT shoot like Cattoor (very few do). Miller shot 35% from the field last year, and 29% on 3-pointers. Comparing PG vs PG, though, Pedulla shot 42% and 33% respectively in those categories, so he wasn't amazingly efficient either.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

Miller's shooting #'s did get better over the course of the year but he is certainly not as good an outside shooter as Pedulla, much less Cattoor.

Miller and Ivy-Curry should be more balanced - less capable of hitting long range shots outside, but also much more capable of taking their man off the dribble to the rim - which should give them better looks from the outside as defenders won't be able to close out on them as hard*

*assuming we end up with a post scoring presence that will draw defenses and create driving lanes

I would much rather have a capable rim attacker than players who can't, even if those players can hit 3s.

Fouls add up.

Ivy Curry shot 38% last year from outside on almost 6 attempts per game. Not far off Cattoor's numbers at 40.5% 2.5 less makes per 100 attempts (or about 7.5 points less every 16 games)

Pedulla vs Hysier was about 3% difference from outside in Pedulla's favor but Hysier had quite a few games last season where he was chucking up 3s to try to get Temple back in games. He took 7 shots per game from outside. Had nine games of nine attempts or more. Still not a strong suit regardless. Biggest positive is ball security. Pedulla gave the ball away 4 more times per game. With how many ACC games that come down to one or two buckets that's a big deal.

Biggest concern now is the swing 4 spot. Burnham/Jones being more like Mutts vs Beran/Long really is critical to Youngs offense. Being able to create offense by finding open shooters from the paint and being in the right position to rebound were missing most of this season.

2 buckets more per game give us 3 more wins. 2 in conference. 22-12 (12-8), good for 5th in the ACC.

Pedulla averaged 3.3 turnovers per game. Miller was at 2.1 TOs per game. Assist-to-turnover ratio was 1.4 for Pedulla, Miller was 1.9. Pedulla was a slightly better rebounder (4.3 to 3.6), and a slightly better free throw shooter (80.1% to 76.2%).

Pedulla may have been frustrating at times, but he was a really, really productive player. We're fortunate to be able to replace him with another experienced, capable point guard, but I don't think Miller is an upgrade.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

An upgrade at 5 would be nice. But we may just have to roll with what we have. I think what we have are serviceable role players. But I don't think we have "the guy" yet.

that sounds to be the same (or near the same) as last year's team. There was no "the guy" and the 5 disappeared in ACC play. Bubble here we come?

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Bubble would be an improvement as last year we were never seriously on the bubble. 2 true road wins is nowhere near the bubble. We did decent in Q3 and 4 but not enough quality wins and too many losses to the Wakes, ND's of the world to be on the bubble last year.

yea, that's true. seemed like they were always close to getting into the "first four out" but each away game prevented that from happening.

Being solidly on the bubble would be better and better athletes should get the team there.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

The ACC only got 5 bids because NCSU won the tourney. VT had 2 wins against the 4 teams that got at large bids from the ACC. Not good, not a bubble resume. Being that horrid on the road killed any chances- around early februrary it was done. The blowout losses to Cuse and ND on the road sealed it. One of the 2 road wins was horrid louisville. Hell, we were on the NIT bubble, IMO

Pretty ideal to get a seasoned, Sr. PG in the Portal.

PG is a position where you absolutely want a guy who has been through some battles.

At this point searching for guys with lots of remaining eligibility is really of minimal value as essentially everyone is a one-year rental.

Complete roster turnover every year is gonna be the rule and not the exception. Nothing makes watching CBB more exciting than not knowing a single player on either team.

I mean, he's only a senior, so that means he should have 2-3 years of eligibility left right? Sorry couldn't help myself

Every second counts

Correct

Lets fucking go. Two studs and two role players, solid haul so far

Was bored tonight... Watched the highlights of Temple in the AAC tournament. Miller was very significant in 5-13 Temple reaching the AAC finals. He had some nifty passes on fast breaks, can drive and get to the rim, and had some nice step-back three pointers. He seemed streaky, when he was hot he was near unstoppable but when he was not, he was somewhat meh. His biggest negative was he played defense like he was in the NBA (low effort).

I think, much like Pedulla, I'll be thrilled with his play in some moments and games and be frustrated in others.

I will choose to be happy about this news.

Great add. An experienced, athletic guy. Should be an upgrade

Welcome home (for at least one season anyway)!!
