Lol, if true just burn it all down. I mean good for him for getting a bigger bag, that's the game these days. But we can't keep our starting Center?
Take every single NIL dollar and allocate it to football
It's more expensive to buy a football team, we could build quite a team for bball with a much smaller pool.
There's also significantly more money to be made in football.
but at some point, we aren't talking about a sport paying for itself are we? We are talking about an athletic department allocating funds based on internal priorities. It's a risk/reward calculation. How much of our donor base do we lose by being mediocre in football vs the cost of being competitive? How much more money could we bring in by being competitive in basketball (or women's basketball)? If we are truly locked in a death spiral in the ACC, then why not invest in the sports where we can pull away from the pack?
If he's getting a bag then whatever, but paying a extensive amount for a center who was outplayed in 50% of P5 games and only has range within 16 feet is interesting. His athleticism is obviously a plus but maybe I am missing something?
He's not the only starter who likely will be....
He is in now.
Fuck sports. See my other comments in other similar fucked threads. What's the fucking point of being a fan. I can be disappointed on my own at work and at home without the need for further investment. Fuck it.
Today is making my wife seem like a genius for telling me to stop getting so invested in sports
Yes, but is your wife familiar with the promising coach we're about to get who will then recruit some very promising players and will surprise everybody with early season wins against a higher ranked opponent, only to turn into slurry shit by seasons end? Then, just when you thought we may have a chance in said sport, this coach will depart for greener pastures?
Nevermind, your wife is a very smart person. Move along, nothing to see here.
I learned that a long time ago. The less emotionally invested in things - from professional down to my daughter's swim meets - the better off I am. I'm down to paying real attention to:
VT football
The Iditarod
(a big gap)
Iowa State football
(a huge gap/casually look at now and then)
Yale football (sometimes just the Harvard game)
International team volleyball (usually watching old videos on YouTube when exercising on the treadmill)
Fuck this. We develop kidd from a stiff, and he bolts.
Could be an early April Fool's joke. I mean, maybe he's just kidding?
Lynn "Kidd"ing?
Obviously this just means we've got a portal commitment from a larger more athletic big and Kidd knows his PT is going to be limited next year.
/s
Yall used to legit say this about every Fuente starter that bolted. lol
Back to Clemson now that PJ Hall is finally done??
Hall has another year of he wants it
College sports are unfollowable now. Start taking away eligibility. You want money, great, sit and lose a year for it.
More of the same for CMY.
There's a reason why Coach K and Roy Williams peaced-out on this...it wasn't because they weren't still effective coaches.
This process is bullshit. I have no problem with 1 unrestricted transfer, but after that, you have to sit and lose a year of eligibility.
But that would really go against the current philosophy of "free NIL for everyone!"
Turns out NIL was just a pretext for "more money for ESPN".
Coach K is 77 years old, Roy Williams is 73.
Everyone here is assuming this is "a college sports" issue and Kidd is just chasing a bag, no one even suggesting that this could be a CMY issue.
There were rumors floating about Pedulla transferring too... feels more like a culture problem to me.
If you've ever met CMY you'd know it is 100% not a coaching culture issue. He is genuinely one of the kindest and nicest people you will ever meet. His players love him and feel like he is a father figure.
Perilla was getting threats from "fans". We should be looking at ourselves instead of placing blame.
Everyone puts on their best face when in the public eye though. There are undeniable issues within our program.
The issues are that half of the ACC has better players than we have. That's it. UNC and Duke will always have more talent, and when Louisville and Cuse get their act together, they will too. UVA has a hall of fame coach that will be there as long as K was at Duke. So the "issues" in our program is that we have mid-acc talent. That is what we need to address via recruiting or the portal. Raise the depth of talent, the "issues" take care of themselves. The ceiling for VT hoops is top 5-6 in the ACC, IMO.
We won the league literally two years ago. Ceiling breached.
We were a 7 seed who was the lowest seed to ever win (until NC state broke our record this year)
And didn't do jack shit in the NCAAs after that.
Didn't do jack shit the next year.
Didn't do jack shit (except for a big brother beat down of lil brother) the next year.
So that's what VT athletics is about? Breaking a glass ceiling once, but then resigned to get back under it for the foreseeable future?
I mean, if you look at the KB thread, I'd say the consensus here would be a resounding yes. I think that's bullshit.
If people just want this to be a miserable echo chamber, I'm not sure what the fucking point is. We had a bad few days. We've been here before. We'll have a good few days in the near future.
If we're being realistic, we're a yo-yo program. Always have been. We're never gonna be a consistent, flagship, blue blood program. We're gonna be shit at times, and then get better. We're gonna get real good at times, then drop off.
But that doesn't fit my predetermined narrative!!1!1!1 /s
This is the honest and impartial view. We are a middling school in a middling conference that will have up and downs.
If only the Women's team could find a coach like that....
It doesn't have to have anything to do with how nice of a guy he is. People have lamented a lot of things about CMY's mindset. Including how structured his offensive system is and how conservative he is to let younger guys play. I think it's fair to say that those have "chased off" a lot of players who while maybe not great, went on to contribute elsewhere (Bamisile, N'Guessan, Buchannanon, Maddox, Rice will probably be an above average player at least).
I don't have any insider knowledge so not saying that those are to blame for Kidd or what his situation is. But there's enough of a trend there to consider and FWIW I don't think Kidd is good enough for an elite program to drop him a bag
Adding Maddux takes away from your otherwise good points. Maddux was getting lots of PT and left for personal reasons unrelated to basketball.
Yeah good point. Maddox definitely had extenuating circumstances. I was thinking on a macro-level and forgot about the personal stuff he had going on.
If I remember correctly, there were some growing pains with him when he first got to campus similar to what we've seen happen with other players, but he was working through it. There's no way i could find it now, but I remember a good clip of Darius talking about how CMY had some hard conversations with him his freshman year about how he wasn't a fun player to coach, and how he took it to heart and grew.
Buzz Williams certainly "chased off" Trevor Thompson- 100%- called him soft, told him he couldn't play for him. That's chasing a player off. Greenberg "chased off" DFS yes, we he got sick of the drama. Young did no such thing with Rice, Nguessan, or Buchannon. You could argue Bam Bam was told he needed to fit with the system and recruited over- but still not a "run-off" situation. The closest thing under young would be Nolley- a bonafide head case. I don't think young was a huge fan.
That's why i put in quotes. I don't think he told them they would never play here, etc.
He has his ways and doesn't want to change them. Many players don't like that and now have basically limitless options to go somewhere else where somebody is telling them what they want to hear. So they've gone somewhere else.
Both sides are probably to blame a little bit. Young needs to get with the times a bit more (I.E. play some freshman and let guys create a bit more), but also I don't want a coach who will change his entire philosophy to keep one blue-chip recruit who would just soon jump ship.
I don't doubt that CMY is a salt of the earth dude (I've heard this from multiple people, one who knows him pretty well). BUT there is now an established trend of players leaving and having more on the court success elsewhere.
I just find it hard to believe that it's only about NIL. I don't doubt it's a factor, but given that there are multiple players who players didn't develop here, then go elsewhere and find success, I do doubt that it's the factor.
People typically leave jobs for some combination of three reasons:
My guess is it's a bit of combination of bullet 1 and 2, and maybe a bit of #3 too.
IMHO he is recruiting -some- of the right type of players and is trying desperately to compliment them to compete in the league we play in. Take MJ Collins for example. He is a "2" that is not a great shooter. That is not a player that traditionally fits in Young's system, but we gave him a scholarship- perhaps thought he could be a good defender, etc. I think Young simply needs to go all in on his guys- screw the recruiting rankings- now we need better players than he recruited at wofford, truth, but stop with the square peg thing- they just leave.
This is 100% where I'm at. Either personnel doesn't match the system, or he's getting the right personnel and can't lead the team.
Something has to change.
Agree- I think the solution is a different top assistant. All great coaches have this. Coach K hated recruiting his last 15 years, so he let Nate James and Scheyer do it- and said he would fire them if they didn't land great players. Buzz is a weirdo, so his top guy Devin Johnson is a basketball junkie/gym guy- yin yang. Roy had Steve Robinson to deal with the players past Roy's golly gee stuff. I think we need to invest in a top notch #2 guy for Young. Also nobody would shed a tear if we upgraded from Giltner, either.
I have heard that his coaching staff is very" tough on the players" or maybe the wording was "he can be a hardass". Not all players respond well to this type of coaching
He's a college hoops coach. They are all hard asses, except Bill Self- who cheats to win. Won't find a tougher guy than K or Izzo on his players. 99% of them are like that. If Rice thinks Williard won't jump his ass at Maryland, he is sorely mistaken.
Dude, did Bill Self piss in your Cheerios or something? Self got caught doing the same shit everyone else was doing and got a slap on the wrist. Who cares? Calipari hasn't been given the death penalty, either, and nobody has paid more players than that dude. The FBI case had KU on tape saying they needed a bigger bag to land Zion Williamson. Where'd he end up going to school again?
Agreed, but NGL, I did laugh after reading your comment when I noticed your username.
Yeah, I'm totally a KU homer. But DC drags Self constantly. I'm just curious why.
No offense, I want a hardass coach that can also be approachable outside of practice. That from every report is CMY. The players that are coming are good coming out of HS, but to be great they still need to learn and grow. That is the coaches job.
No offense taken just telling you what I've over heard
⬆️ 📅:

Not much <3 for certain starter amongst 10
how is my translation?
Update:
Chemistry was really bad on the team, lots of division.
Players getting offered better opportunites elsewhere, including financial benefits.
Not much love for certain starter amongst ____?
👍🏿 My best b.street impersonation
what is "amongst 10"
Do you have more context on the threats? I've heard it mentioned but haven't seen anything concrete on what actually happened.
This was from Will Stewart over on TSL:
Interesting, so Will hasn't actually seen them, but was passing along the rumor. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but there's been a lot of smoke and no fire.
Also, it's social media. So even there are screenshots, unless it's an established account doing it, it could be anyone behind the keyboard.
Just doesn't feel like that's any real reason to me why he's gone.
You and everyone on this board do what has made you sucessfull. Sure you need to adapt, but every great college coach relies on what has made them successful. Look at Calipari- he doesn't win in March anymore because he still favors one and done's- now with open free agency and NIL- that's not the shiny object anymore and older players are better in March. Look at hall of famers John Thompson, Gary Williams, John Cheney, Jim Beoheim- all stuck with their methods, personality, etc. Thompson lost in the Olympics because he had his type of team and no perimeter scoring. Honestly can't think of a chameleon coach that is uber sucessfull. Whit knew what Young was when he hired him. A 30 year track record.
Well, at least Wessler has developed and played some meaningful minutes to be ready to take over as the big, right?
Comment deleted. I thought he was transferring also but confused him with John
I believe Wessler should've had a lot of Robbie Baren's minutes in that last game.
This really doesn't bother me that much
Miami's NIL wins:
Fuck Miami in every sport
....and every hole
With a cactus
Covered in hot sauce.
man, y'all remember when there used to be limitations on transfers, like you couldn't transfer to an in conference foe? Clemson, Tech, Miami. Woof.
You had to sit TWO years to transfer within the ACC. Now you can play for 6 ACC schools in 6 years if you were here during covid
Once again, if I'm going to spend that money, I'm going to make it someone who is consistent in P5. Do they think he is an actual replacement for Omir? No way. If I had a dollar for every shot within 6 feet he missed this year, I would be able to build a women's basketball only arena.
Kidd shot 67% this season. He was top 3 in the ACC. Biggest complaint wasn't when he shot, it was when he didn't or when they didn't even get him the ball.
His numbers will be even better next year when he drops 24 points on the Hokies
I feel like if you just make him catch it 10 ft from the hoop you can bring a light help over and he is done for. Doesn't pass back out and re-establish his post and doesn't have more than one dribble in his post moves arsenal. Kidd plays a back to the basket style that is becoming antiquated.
And according to a source who is very close to the players, he was rumored to be getting a $500K NIL deal. And I heard that before he signed.
The same source has also said that Collins and Poteat are seeking (anticipating?) $100K to $200K deals. Pedula just wants to play in the Big Dance, and doesn't think we will be able to do that because we can't compete in NIL in MBB. Camden just wants playing time and will likely play down a level or two.
Heard the exact same. I can totally see McDonald's giving Linn Kidd a half million dollars to endorse the happy meal. Who couldn't see that?
I would rather watch the hokies play in the FCS league and donate my money for scholarships than participate in this shit show.
Me too. It's been said here before. Let the P2 morph into the "NFL Minor League" and let the new college football be the college football we all want and love or something like that. If that is today's FCS, I'd be okay with it.
Miami getting Kidd may have cost them Norchad Omier. He is reportedly set to enter the portal this week and should have a long list of suitors.
I will be honest, I hope we make a run at him.
Norchad Omier anagrams to Rich Marooned, which is what he will be when he puts on a Hokie jersey
Is this even a possibility? Is he on our radar/visiting?
idk man but the anagrams never lie
great point
No reports yet on the teams that have reached out. He did put the Do not contact tag on so may already know where he is going. He averaged 17ppg and 10rpg last season so will be a hot commodity. He only was put in last night.
Apparently Wooga Poplar, 6'5 200 lb Wing (13.4 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 2.2 apg) also entered the portal yesterday bringing Miami to 8 portal entries this offseason. Kidd may actually end up on a less talented team overall if Miami can't get some key pieces in.
Mike Young should test out interest from both of them. Poplar though has heard from most of the Blue Bloods already.
Miami lost a 9th player on Thursday as well with Kyshawn George hiring an agent and declaring for the draft
That's wild. I figured Omier was out of eligibility and that's why they were looking for a transfer Center.
Looking into it, he's the same class as Poteat.. started college ball in the 20-21 season so he gets that COVID bonus year.
Everybody seems to get one or two.
So all the team that Kidd thought would be teammates have now left. Seems like all he got was his bag.
One could almost say that he "was left holding the bag."
And if the rumors are true about the size of the bag, he still made the right choice.
