OT: 2024 NFL Discussion

I debated starting a topic for discussion around tonight's NFL Draft, but I looked in the tracker and found that a general NFL discussion topic (other than Hokies in the NFL) had not been started yet, so I figured I'd just start this one up.

For now, tonight is the first round of the NFL Draft. So, who is your team, what are you needs, where are you picking, and what do you hope to see happen tonight? Who do you think your team will draft tonight? And what are your general thoughts about how tonight will go down? Mad frenzy of trades for QBs? Teams mostly sticking and picking? Which teams are going to make the dumbass picks tonight?

Also, any Hokies projected to be drafted? (The fact that I'm unsure if they are any is just a further indictment of the Fuente era.)

Which teams are going to make the dumbass picks tonight?

EDIT:

The Bears... no brainer... they are taking a mentally weak kid #1 overall in a man's league. Will be a huge bust. They are doing the commanders a big favor.

I don't know if he's mentally weak, but I do know that he's getting some horrible advice about how to prepare for the draft and for an NFL career.

- Don't take this the wrong way- but the only one I've been wrong about recently is Mahomes. I thought he would be "OK" and not a first ballot hall of famer. I was right about Trubisky, Manziel, Fields, Haskins, Young, Mack Jones, etc. Watch them against the best teams they play. and in the OSU QB case, the NFL will be the first time they play a game without all of the best players on their side. I wouldn't have Caleb Williams on my board. I could be famously wrong if he is John Elway, but Ill take my chances. He's soft. Like Josh Rosen, Ryan Leaf. Soft.

Not too take away from your predictive abilities, but it's statistically WAY easier to predict busts vs overachievers.....

I think very few picked Mahomes to be as dominant as he has been.

The Bears are not 1 QB away from being a contender. They are a mess everywhere except for LB. If they are smart they'll convert their #1 into multiple picks later on in the round/draft.

All three of the first three picks are likely to be bad picks.

Williams has horrible numbers against teams with a decent defense for his entire career. He feeds against bad teams.

Daniels is a stick rushing the ball and reportedly doesn't have a long ball.

Maye - We all know that his numbers came from his WR's that are future all pro's in the NFL. He also makes poor decisions.

Correct. The best NFL QB of all time was a 6th round pick. That league is absolutely terrible at scouting QBs. Terrible. They only ones they hit on really are generational types like Manning, Elway etc. They miss on the vast majority of others- in terms of high draft picks. Yes, obviously someone on your team has to play QB... many are drafted in the later rounds.

the bust rate on first round draft qbs is really high, but it's significantly lower than the later rounds.

decent rule of thumb is that if your QB hits after every nfl passed on them twice, they are an outlier.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

My point, agree. They draft good QB's by accident vs. scouting most of the time.

I just think that it's really really hard to be a very good NFL quarterback. It's not that teams are "bad" at scouting them as much as teams overindex on the positional value and reach based on need. It's the one position where need beats out going "best player available". (And it's strange when a team like the Cards drafts over Josh Rosen bc of that, even though it was the right decision with hindsight)

But even then, the bust rate is very high because there just aren't a lot of humans on earth who can be a good NFL qb

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I really think that if the Patriots take Maye, it will be a huge mistake. Nothing about him has ever really excited me and UNC QBs have a pretty solid recent history of not being very good. Much rather they take MHJ

If you can't handle my shit posts, you don't deserve my memes

I think you're right about Maye, but I don't think they'll stick and pick MHJ. Somebody is going to be willing to trade up for Maye, so if they're not going to grab him, they either draft JJ, or they trade back and try to fill their laundry list of needs.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Agree- Maye and Howell slung it around because their defense gives up a TD every possession, so they had to keep pace. Maye is mid.

Agree. UNC is just so soft. It's just a cultural thing there - entitlement and soft. Trubisky and Howell were so overrated, and Maye is very much the same.

As a casual Bills fan I'm very happy about the pats taking Maye

Onward and upward

yeah the bills won't ever have to deal with lifetime great QB and coach in their division again. You won't ever see another run like the pats had- ever. Perfect storm- cheating genius coach and the best QB ever.

Y'all know I'm an Atlanta Falcons fan.
Pick: 8th (most likely going to be picking the first defensive player taken)
Top 3 needs: EDGE, CB, WR

Chalk from most mocks seems to be Dallas Turner, the EDGE from Alabammy. Solid pick, but there are lots of rumblings around (but not from) the front office that they are looking at Latu (EDGE, UCLA) and maybe even Byron Murphy (DI Texas), or maybe trading down to draft any of these or one of the two CBs (Marshall or Arnold) in the early teens. I would be happy with any of these, but would prefer the trade down to happen, as I would like to see them use some of the ammo from the trade down to either (a) have an additional day 1 or 2 pick next year (for a QB, maybe) or (b) trade back up into the first for one of the late-round EDGEs or CBs.

There's a small chance that if Odunze or Nabers drops to 8, that they go WR, but as tantalizing as that offense sounds (and they really are in win-now mode), we need some more talent on defense.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Low key think whichever team takes Latu is a case of an NFL team outsmarting themselves. I think he's a good player and very talented, but he medically retired at UW with a neck issue prior to transferring to UCLA. I'd want no part of sinking top-10 draft capital into a guy with that medical history

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

This is the one area where NFL scouts are pretty effective. They sniff out injury red flags pretty well and draft accordingly. They miss terribly on QB and Edge Rush projections, etc.

and he was the first defender off the board lol

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I think the problem here is that you ignored all of your experience as a Falcons fan and didn't expect them to due something incredibly stupid.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

No, I commented elsewhere that I knew they would find some way to Falc this up. I just didn't expect it would be for a QB.

I mean, I get it. I understand why they made the pick, even if I don't like it. Given where their current trajectory is, they shouldn't be drafting anywhere near where they are this year, and even if they get future draft picks (say, for example, a 2025 1st from LAR that was rumored to be offered), they may not be enough to move up high enough to draft an elite QB, and that's before you factor in potential sanctions from tampering. So, it seems Penix was their guy, and they decided to take him before somebody else did. (There were reports this morning that three other teams were trying to trade up into the top 10 to draft him.)

So yay (/s), we have our QB of the future, even though we still have massive holes in the defense. I'll wait to see who we pick tonight before passing overall judgement, but I'm not thrilled at the start of this draft.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

A QB of the future that just started 6 years of college football, with 4 season ending injuries, who is already 24 and won't be starting until probably 2027 as long as Cousins doesn't fall on his face.

Precisely.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Who knows what my NYG will do at #6 -- trade up for a qb? stay put and take WR or OT?

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Well you have enough info now to know that Daniel Jones sucks. So draft accordingly. It's a QB league.

Does he? Or are the Giants so bereft of talent around him that nobody could succeed there?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Sample size is big enough. sucks

Daniel Jones has a rock bottom floor but a high ceiling and is actually very athletic! his biggest problem is that he is not durable and gets hurt frequently. But he has never had even a WR who could be considered Very Good and has never even had an average OL.

I would not be upset with Giants kicking the can down the road a year since you have to pay him 40m this year and I dont think JJ McCarthy is the guy. See what Jones can do with skill players who aren't just Darius Slayton and Daniel Bellinger

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

So the Giants could continue to play "what if" Jones has the perfect conditions and team around him... or they could draft a legit QB they can win with. Their choice.

there is already proof of concept and he's under contract. the only reason you reach for a QB is if Schoen + Daboll feel like they need to save their jobs. i really don't think they need to save their jobs and i don't think they think that either.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

I think the Giants and Jets both need to have a decent OL before you get a new QB. Feeding Jones into the wood chipper for one more year while your line is getting better than drafting a high QB. I honestly think the next three QB's are probably as good as the top three and they can probably go in the second round.

I am a fan of the professional football team located closest to DC, and my heart says Daniels at 2 but head says Maye.

I am also hoping Peters gets aggressive and trades up for a LT.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Thank your stars today that the Bears are taking a collossal bust #1

IIRC the Bears would have picked #15 if they hadn't gotten Carolina's #1 pick, Caleb is entering a much better situation than most #1 overall QB picks so I think we'll find out sooner rather than later how good he is. I haven't watched enough of him to have an opinion either way.

That being said, I think Fields is a better QB than his time in Chicago suggests and the Bears couldn't figure out how to make that work. We'll see.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Caleb's numbers against good teams aren't good. His numbers feasted against teams with bad defenses.

Daniels in DC feels right. No logical football reason, just out of all the available QBs on the board I think he feels like the best fit for the revamped culture and fan base.

This is the beauty of sports talk. If Caleb Williams shows toughness and accuracy after getting beat down by NFL LBs every down, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong. Given the NFL's track record at drafting QBs at the top of the draft, I feel confident in my take.

Agreed, but I am also looking at history. I am not other than Carson Palmer a QB from UNC or USCw has really made it in the NFL for what 20 years???

Barkley sucks, Sanchez had a couple OK game manager years under Rex Ryan, Leinhart sucked, Cassell sucked, etc.

Even if he had a few good games, Sanchez will forever be associated with the butt fumble. That's an auto-DQ from being in any conversation about QBs that made it.

Really interested to see if the Cowboys pick a center high in the draft or if they're gonna let Brock Hoffman try to be the man. He looked good in the opportunities he had, including 2 starts.

Id like to know what the Vikings have up (if anything) to swap spots with the Jets. I was cautiously hopeful that they would get McCarthy, and they did. I just hope this works out.

Teams dont just trade back for nothing

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Doesn't the NFL and the NFLPA have mandates for minimum salaries based on the draft picks? If the Jets didn't want McCarthy, knew the Vikes were taking McCarthy, then it makes sense they would take one step back to draft the guy they want without have to take the premium on a top-10 pick.

Nm... it's based on the round (I think) not the actual pick in the round.

Ugh...

Minnesota sent the No. 11 pick as well as a fourth-rounder and fifth-rounder to the Jets in exchange for the No. 10 pick and No. 203 pick.

That's not insignificant. This kid better work out.

I've never understood that moving up one spot trade.

Well considering the sixth QB of the night went at #12, moving from #11 to #10 is to ensure that nobody else jumps ahead of you to take your guy.

Who had the Falcons taking a QB in the first round after giving somebody $100 million guaranteed?

Whatever the case the writing is on the wall for Ridder. Whether he gets cut or traded before the end of training camp is the only question.

Desmond Ridder was traded to the Cardinals for Rondale Moore last month

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

My point exactly!... I wasn't tracking that trade, at all

This is precisely how you lose in the NFL. 1. Give a guy coming off an Achilles tear 100 million guaranteed. 2. Hope that your team will be the exception and he actually wins something for once. 3. Alienate him by drafting a QB in the first round of the ensuing draft. 4. Cause tension in the locker room from minute one. Great formula.

Great formula for the Falcons, sure. We always have to Falc things up in the most spectacular way possible. It's in our DNA.

/sigh

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

And apparently Cousins has already announced he was shocked that they drafted a QB in the first round rather than take somebody that would make the team better.

The NFL is worse than software companies at lessons learned. And that's saying alot. Aaron Rogers pouted, brett favre pouted, Brady was prickly about Mack Jones, Phil Simms and Joe Theisman on record that they would not let the backups have ANY snaps when they were starting, etc. So let's draft a first round QB- a slight reach btw- simply to piss off cousins. They never learn.

Aaron Rodgers pouted, then went out and threw for 2 MVPs, after which they traded him and got assets for Love, who seems to be doing okay. Looks like it worked out for them.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

i mean same with Favre pouting and having a second place mvp finish, and brady was already a buc when the pats drafted mac jones, so on so forth.

nobody overrates the abilities of aging NFL players quite like the aging NFL players themselves. having a succession plan in place makes sense (e.g. Alex Smith to Mahomes, Favre to Love to Rodgers) but usually a clean break makes way more sense.

But i don't think we've ever seen a team invest heavily in free agency AND the draft in the same off season. it's bonkers

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

it's bonkers

Which is how the Falcons roll. /sigh

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Saw another comment on Cousins' reaction, and this made me laugh:

Yeah well since the Birds are under investigation for tampering because Cousins blabbed about the initial phone call, maybe keeping him in the dark was a pretty good play.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

what even are you talking about lol

Jets at 10
Vikes at 11 (currently rolling with Sam Darnold and Jaren Hall)
Broncos at 12 (currently rolling with Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson)
Raiders at 13 (currently rolling with Aidan OConnell and Gardner Minshew)

the Vikings traded up with the Jets to ensure that neither of the two QB-needy teams behind them could. it's like the draft equivalent of aggressively boxing out for a rebound

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Yeah, but if I was the Jets I would have held to the last second waiting for a better deal from either the Broncos or Raiders.

Presumably the Vikings thought someone else was going to move into the spot to take him. Whether real or a if it was based on a bluff, that's what would make sense to me.

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

Amen. The Redskins did that, gave up 3 other first round picks for one-read RG3 who had a paper knee. One spot up.

Has their ever been 6 QBs in the first 12 picks?

1983 was the only time 6 were taken in the first round.

Elway, Todd Blackledge, Jim Kelly, Tony Eason, Ken O'Brien, Dan Marino - 27 picks.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Yeah thr stealer really screwed that draft up.

EDIT: I just want to point out the massive what if had the Steelers taken Marino, how many rings would he have? How many championships would the Steelers have had?

Yeah and he was the home town hero to boot. I think they tried to correct that here recently by taking Pickett but that did not work out well.

Pickett was 100% a Marino correction for the Steelers. The main difference being Marino was one of the greatest to ever throw a football and Pickett needed a once in a generation pandemic to give him a 5th year of college to excel.

If it were not for COVID, Pickett would currently be battling for the starting job in the USFL/XFL.

Extended eligibility now is rare, correct.

The NFL sucks at scouting top round QBs, and Gardner minshew and sam howell were on your TV screen last year. These teams are desperate to luck out and land an actual good QB.

Nothing like a team to give a QB a $100 million guaranteed contract then take an old QB in the first round.

Then sign him to the standard 4/5 year rookie contract and say afterwards "if he sits for 4/5 years that would be fine."

So what did you draft him for then??

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

If he sits for 4 years, he will be a minimum of 28 years old trying to get a starting gig in a game where a lot of QB's have to prove they are elite to keep playing at 30.

He won't sit for 4 years. There are outs for Cousins after 2 and 3 years.

After 2025: He'll be 38, have earned $100M ($50M/yr), and there is a $35M cap hit in 2026.
After 2026: He'll be 39, have earned $135M ($45M/yr), $12.5M dead cap in 2027.

He won't be playing for the Falcons in 2027, unless he absolutely balls out. At which point, who cares? You do like the Packers did with Jordan Love, and extend him under the 5th-year guarantee rate and evaluate him as a starter, as you already have a lot of information about how he'll perform from observing him for four years.

Look, I agree, I understand why they drafted him, even if I don't like the pick. But if having an elite QB is one of the most important things to have, you like a guy that's available at your pick, and you're not convinced you'll be able to acquire one in the future, then why not?

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

So if the falcons assume even mid-case scenario with Cousins, why draft a QB now? with the 8th pick in the draft? Do they honestly think Pennix is Elway? If so- great they got a steal. If not, they could draft a QB in 2 years. Makes little sense unless they scouted Pennix as a Elway, Manning, etc.

2 reasons, I think:
1. They were uncertain that they'd be able to draft an elite QB going forward, especially if Cousins elevates the team as expected, and also given unknown sanctions for tampering. If they'd traded back, and acquired even a future 1st (say the Rams' 2025 1st), two bottom-third 1sts are not enough to move up and get an elite QB, without further mortgaging the future. I guess the FO felt that this was their only shot given their expected future trajectory to grab one.
2. They think Penix is an elite QB. Here's what the Falcoholic had to say about the pick:

...Penix has a terrific arm, thrives in the pocket, and generally makes very good decisions, all things offensive coordinator Zac Robinson covets after working with Matthew Stafford and now working with Kirk Cousins. Assuming the offensive system is much the same a couple of years from now, Penix will be a comfortable fit as the team's long-term starter, and provides compelling insurance for an aging, recovering-from-a-major-injury Cousins. His ability to avoid pressure, his track record, and his arm clearly drew the Falcons to him.

That's all I got.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

We likely won't know if this was a good pick or not for 2 or 3 years from now, so who knows maybe it works out for them. Still a reach, but yeah I get why they did it.

Well if in 2 years the falcons are drafting 29th because they made the NFC title game, well isn't that the point? Winning games? So who cares if you can't draft a QB 3rd overall? You are winning 13-14 games a year- winning is the object. Or is this like the NBA now? where who gives a fuck if you win, you accumulate "pieces" "contracts you can dump" and draft guys from Serbia that might be able to play in 6 years. Winning is secondary in the NBA in terms of the draft and roster management. It typically is not in the NFL.

seems like an odd strategy - There are only so many NFL teams - how many PE firms are going to specialize in NFL franchises? Without looking at any of the details, I don't see how this can be a benefit to much of anyone. A couple teams that maybe have questionable management (like the Washington team under Snyder) may benefit from better management, but at what cost? How much more juice can really be squeezed out of each franchise? Are investing partners really interested in NFL teams? Are there substantial ROI opportunities there? I have my doubts. It almost sounds like a way for Billionaire friends of current NFL team owners to buy up teams from owners that are disliked by the majority, or something

Onward and upward

This is a league that charges fellow owners up to 650 million dollars to re-locate their teams and give zero of that back to the city losing said team- zero. They keep it for themselves. It makes no sense on any level outside of tax shelters/loopholes, etc. Makes no sense other than greed/money. Lets put a fellow owner 800 Mil in the hole in his new city on day 1. ????? In a league that supposedly shares profits. In terms of PE- yes- money, more money, every last dime. These teams play in 20 year disposable stadiums on the backs of tax payers that also pay for 15 dollar beers. Money.

There are so many shenanigans that I am happy my team is Green Bay. Owned by the City and money goes back to the City. They use profits from the team to perform urban redevelopment around the sports complex. They are never going anywhere.

The packers are the best thing about sports.... but let them not keep improving Lambeau.... Money talks.

Luckily Lambeau gets updated about every 5 years, new boxes, or entrances, etc.

It does suck they have destroyed the neighborhood around the stadium the last 15 years.

Yeah. And given the owners on the committee responsible it seems extra questionable. IME, PE tends to want influence if not ownership so what's the strategy here?

i just skimmed the article. Not much meat on the bone there. Looks like they're looking at selling a capped percentage of equity. I don't understand the benefit there. To your point, probably just influence. I don't know enough about the individual owners to assess how questionable the proposal is. I think it's telling that they expected more pushback from the other 27 teams. If they expected pushback that probably means they know there's something about the approach that is worth pushing back on.

Insightful take.

I admit a blind spot on how NFL Rookie Mini Camps work. Beck was reported signed by Jets but today he is shown at Saints mini camp. Kendricks was supposed to be at Chiefs camp but seeing posts he is at Dolphins camp. Looks as if their are two rookie mini camps for each team so players are able to attend camps with two teams on back to back weekends. Believe Pollard and Payne signed contracts so they will only appears with Commanders and Texans respectively.

Falcons starting out with a gauntlet (v PIT, @PHI, v KC, v NO, v TB), but not a bad rest of the way. Looking forward to going to the game @ WAS on 29 Dec.

How does your team's schedule look?

Not a big fan of the reveal video, but a few good jabs at the opponents. ("Keep slipping" for the Panthers, blowing through the wall making the "Saints" the "Aints", Coach Prime the best coach in Colorado, that sort of thing.)

Well, I guess he has a better chance at a ring there than in Washington.

Fer sure. I can only think of one or two teams that would have longer odds at a ring than Washington. That team is pretty much at the bottom of the heap

Onward and upward

It's been awesome to follow his career. Really glad he was able to successfully leverage a position switch and make freaking bank for himself and his family. He could've flamed out after 2 years, here we are 10 years later

And the NFL pension builds for longevity not necessarily income.

Interesting tidbit, if Ceedee Lamb and Dak Prescott both get the contracts they want they will be eating 40% (over $100,000,000) of the cowboys salary cap in two years.

Trying hard to think of a more overrated pro than Dak Prescott? What other QB that has never won anything and throws dink/dunk passes is a constant topic on Get Up, First take, etc. He was a segment on this years fucking super bowl coverage FFS. The cowboys were not in the super bowl, btw. Off the top of my head- bums Ben Simmons- a panhandler basically, Lonzo Ball- an NBA player that can't shoot a basketball? those are in the running but Prescott is in the team overrated photo of all time.

Hard agree here. I mean, is he top half of the league? Maybe? But he is no Mahomes or Brady and spending that kind of money on him is a waste. Of course Jerry is an idiot and makes emotional decisions so Dak will probably get a huge deal and Jerry will never win another super bowl.

Reports are Jerry begrudgingly paid Dak last time. The talking heads were discussing if they keep Lamb and let Dak walk. Run with rookie QB's with a great line, and skill players.

Dak should be looking at cutting some kind of a deal. Whatever he gets from Dallas, and I mean whatever it is, will be better than he will get if he hits free agency. Losing in round 1 not going to cut it when you go 12-5. If you want the big contract, you need to show some play off success.

The lucked out with Dak anyway- so don't get greedy. They hoped that a one-read poor mechanics guy drafted in the 4th round could be a serviceable NFL QB- and I suppose not sucking totally is what they got. Don't get greedy and think he is also going to win you a super bowl. Move on.

Vikes just have Christian Darrisaw a 4 year $113M extension with $77M guaranteed! Get it boy!

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

It becomes the 3rd largest salary for an OT (in total value), behind Trent Williams and Andrew Thomas; however it is the highest average annual value, by a quarter million, over Penei Sewell.

For reference, the full value of Darrisaw's contract is roughly equivalent to the career earnings of Michael Vick.

I looked to see if there was a catch-all NFL game discussion thread, but there's only (1) the Hokies in the NFL thread, (b) an NFL Week 1 thread, and (iii) this one. Since there hasn't been a lot of traction for week-specific NFL discussion threads, I'm resurrecting this (only 2 month old) thread for discussions about NFL games that don't necessarily include Hokies.

That said, that was the Kirk Cousins that we ATL fans were hoping to see when he was signed. Yes, that late interception hurt, and I thought the game was over at that point, but the D held them to 3&out, and Kirk was able to drive down the field with about a minute and no timeouts for the game-tying FG, having spiked the ball with 1 sec left on the clock. Then, after winning the coin toss, drove 70 yards in 4 plays to win the game. 500 yards and 3 4 TDs for Kirk on the day, he was slinging it all over the place. Great win by the Falcons last night.

One interesting fact-nugget from the TV set after the game: the Falcons have not led by, nor have been behind by, more than one score at all this season. I had to look this up, and it's true. There was one point where the Chiefs had led by 8 (22-14) in the 3rd and 4th quarters, but every other interim score in all 5 games have been within 7 points. And this is against the toughest record of any team so far this season. Amazing.

I had debated starting Kirk in one fantasy league. Hits head repeatedly on desk.

I have Dak and Kirk. Have started Dak all season (including this week) and he's been pretty mid outside of week three. I may be adjusting my approach moving forward.

It has been pretty consistent for me. Whoever is on the bench does much better.

Daniels building an early legend in Washington, hopefully he stays healthy. Did not expect 6-2 at this point.

Also did not think the Ravens would lay an egg against the Browns

If I am coach of the bears, this bum is looking for work this morning.

He literally wasn't even facing the ball when it was snapped.

And still got over in time to tip it to the Washington receiver.

Wow. Has to suck to be that guy.

Giants just benched Banks and Greg Stroman is taking his place at CB.

Kirk Cousins channelling Patrick Mahomes had me laughing on Sunday. How the hell did he not make it over the line to gain? Oh, he pulled the ball backwards when he was tripped. LOL!

I hope Penix can "rise" to the occasion. (The reddit comments on this were gold, Jerry!)

Also, the game against the Commanders on the 29th had been, prior to this announcement, flexed to Sunday Night Football. Penix vs Daniels. Should be fun. Good thing Penix has a tune-up game against the Giants to work out the kinks.

For sure. Its important for Penix to work out kinks....

Pretty sure Cousins has worked with fully guaranteed contracts since he left the Redskins over a decade ago. He is laughing all the way to the bank. After all, he was drafted to be RGIII's backup.

This one wasn't fully guaranteed, but it's still a haul. $90M guaranteed, another $10M if he's on the roster in 2025. Per OverTheCap.com, his current contract looks like:
Signing bonus: $50M*, prorated at $12.5M/yr between 2024 through 2027 (*=fully guaranteed)
Base salary: $12.5M* (2024), $27.5M* (2025), $35M (2026), $35M (2027) (*=fully guaranteed)
Roster bonus: $10M (2026, if on 2025 roster), $10M (2027, if on 2026 roster)
Total: $180M, $90M guaranteed

Per today's contract breakdown article, these are the stated dead-caps based on what could happen to Kirk...
Cut pre-1 June: $65M hit on 2025 ($27.5M 2025 salary plus three years of prorated signing bonus)
Cut post-1 June: $40M hit on 2025, $25M hit on 2026 (same as above)
Traded before 2025 season: $37.5M hit on 2025 (just three years of prorated signing bonus)

However you look at it, his tanking this season is a kick in the teeth.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Not sure tanking is the correct word. He would like to play for that remaining 90 million. Interesting that he accepted a non fully guaranteed contract. That was all he played under the Vikings for.

Agreed. My intent was more of "his quality of play went in the tank" as opposed to "he was intentionally playing poorly".
