Two 30 point games this season. Offseason good news. It's nice to have.
Along with the Hokies, Curry received interest from Ole Miss, TCU, Kentucky, Auburn, Arkansas, and others.
Curry, a 6-foot-3 junior, averaged 17.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game this season for the Roadrunners.
The La Marque, Texas native is currently ranked as the No. 36 overall player in On3's Transfer Portal Rankings.
NEWS: UTSA transfer guard Jordan Ivy-Curry has committed to Virginia Tech, he tells @On3sports. The 6-3 junior averaged 17.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game this season.https://t.co/nBIGgTxEVM pic.twitter.com/jhVbM1MjVu— Joe Tipton (@TiptonEdits) April 2, 2024

Finally got Curry to Tech!
and a Jordan!
And beat out Kentucky!
Let's do some more of that
Positive news?!? Is that allowed?
Over 1000 point scorer. This was first season as a starter. Tech will be his third school. Did two years at UTSA, then went to Pacific for a year before returning to UTSA. Only played in 21 games this year. Dealt with a shoulder injury.
Shoots roughly 40% from 3. Has averaged double digit scoring in three of four seasons.
I will choose to be happy about this news
EDIT: With the benefit of hindsight, I now see that this was a poor choice.
So assuming this is his final year of eligibility?
Yes
I highly doubt that
There it is! I was scrolling slowly and waiting for it. If you hadn't said it, I was going to steal your thunder.
Just watched a highlight video of him on YouTube, dude is a dynamic scorer.
If we could reel Pedulla back in, this will be one of the best backcourts in the ACC.
Welcome aboard Jordan!
Get that man a tissue.
so shoots about as well as Catoor but with better scoring at all levels. Can he play defense? We lost our two best defensive guards.
Turkey>Roadrunner, obviously
Im back in on bball baby
Okay Mike Young! Get Nickel and Pedulla back and we aren't panicking as much. Still will need a good big and wing
Meanwhile elsewhere in the portal
Twitch...
He should counter with 1.25mil now
This is just fucking insane.
So, is Kansas the Yahoo or the Google in this scenario?

Got a bunch of yahoos running the show over there
This goes to show why players like Kidd and Collins are testing the NIL marketplace.
That being said, I wouldn't pay Storr even $750K, the return on investment just isn't there. And Kidd and Collins are certainly not going to get anything even resembling that number.
Kansas set a bad precedent last year when they gave Hunter Dickenson $2M so now everyone expects big cash from them.
yeah and you hate to see them suck this year after they spent all that bag,
Not at all. And I am a Kansas fan. It's where I went to my first college basketball game. Great environment but that was before all this pay for play.
Nothing against Kansas hoops per-se, but I loathe total scum bag Bill Self. He is 100% what is wrong with college sports. Scumbag cheater
Yeah my Fandom goes back to Roy Williams time as Kansas coach. Went to a game in 89 when they went 30-5.
Self and Calipari think they are a Dean Smith or a Coach K and they never will be. Never. Say what you want about K- asshole, whiner, control freak- but he built championship teams the right way at a school with the strictest of academics. It wasn't until Corey Maggette that he even considered going that route to build a team. Dean quit after he saw what it took to land Rasheed Wallace. Self and Caipari will never be respected like that- ever. No matter how many games they win, etc. Self is not even on Izzo's level, IMO. Bob Huggins told me to my face at an event that Self couldn't coach a high school team actual basketball and I believe him.
I golf with and am friends with 2 very well placed WVU boosters that invited me to a private event for charity with Huggy Bear. He was great. Talked to him about hoops for half hour
I can guess who at least one of the boosters is. SF?
Saw talk that Kidd bagged close to that, like $650k
I stand corrected. Kidd probably is closer to being worth that kind of money, being a big man who shoots over 60% from the field.
This is totally real world supply and demand yall. Yep this totally happens in other "businesses"
Go get Bronny James out of the portal
/s
I mean...he's the one kid who doesn't need NIL money lol.
But he'll want it and a lot of it.
Then you'll probably hate to hear that he's actually #1 in NIL money in the entire NCAA.
Well with him- real NIL makes sense. He's lebron's kid- his name image and likeness is actually that- his is legit. Nobody north or south of christiansburg knows who Linn Kidd is. That is pay for play. Bronny is actually legit NIL- he is a famous son of the best player in the world.
i still think MJ is better than LJ
No question in my mind. MJ was a better defender, never load managed, never lost in the finals, and rescued the league from tape delay playoff games. Lebron formed a couple of super teams and lost to far inferior teams in playoff series. Jordan is perhaps the most elite competitor of all time in any sport. LeBron needs 3 all stars around him for him to be happy. MJ by far, IMO
Kelly Slater enters the discussion right here.
AC Slater enters the discussion right here.
I know you're kidding, but regarding AC Slater:

AC / DC enters the discussion right here.
Kelly Slater, The G.O.A.T. Arguably the "most elite competitor of all time in any sport" in the history of mankind.
The below video was from Kirra Point, Coolangatta, Queensland, Australia 2 weeks ago - the dude is 52:
52 ain't nuthin', we have guys here older than that.
I strongly resemble this remark.
I still miss the days of Larry Bird, Dr. J, Magic, etc. Those were epic basketball battles. Bird blowing his back doing his mothers driveway at the peak of his career rather than hire somebody...
Me too. Those guys wanted to compete. You think Magic would have conspired to leave the Lakers and join up with Jordan and Pippen? Fuck no, he wanted to beat those guys- not join them. Bird would not have joined a super team if you had a gun to his head. No comparison to today. Jordan used to play back to backs in Salt Lake and Sacramento- why? because the fucking fans - that's why. Lebron load manages and says fuck the fans.
This^^^^ The NBA is garbage now. I won't watch it. The players act so entitled. They don't need my money.
What? you don't like scripted games? tanking in the open? drafting players for 5 years from now, but still charging full price for tickets? Stars not playing key games? Made up in season tournaments because your product sucks so bad before the playoffs? Zero defense? Whats not to like???? /S
Bird had a super team the 85-86 Celtics team is still considered one of the best teams to ever play BB. McHale, Parrish, Bill Walton, Dennis Johnson, Danny Ainge, and Scott Wedman.
Right, all drafted by the celtics sans Walton. That;'s not conspiring to get 4 of the top 6 NBA players on your team. The celtics built that team from the draft.
That is probably why they might have been the greatest team. Naturally built. Walton was also towards the end of his career and other teams weren't willing to take a chance on him coming back from injury. He did and won the 6th man of the year with the Celtics.
If I remember correctly the Celtics traded the first pick in the draft to Golden State for Robert Parish and a draft pick. Golden State drafted Joe Barry Carrol and Boston used that pick to draft Kevin McHale. Worked out pretty well for Boston.
I haven't seriously watched or cared about the NBA since he Took His Talents To South Beach.
Because they couldn't. Free agency in the NBA wasn't a thing until 1988
Cool story, except he sucks at basketball
Are you sure?
He just declared for the NBA Draft
But isn't signing an agent so he's leaving the door open to actually play for us.
Another issue with the Transfer Portal. Portal closes on May 1st but the Early Entrant Withdrawal Deadline isn't until June 16th at 5 pm. If he ends up staying in the draft, Young won't be able to fill his scholarship from the portal at that point. Would essentially be a Rodney Rice type situation but with a bit more time to prepare. Young theoretically could pull in a freshman with the scholarship.
We bak?
wat
I'm guessing this is fallout from him declaring for the draft after committing to us. We need to know who we have for next year.
College sports and the transfer portal:
But its wrong to restrict these poor college athletes or have any requirements or expectations whatsoever.
This NIL money is going to last them 1 or maybe 2 years and then....
We should continue to devalue a College Degree which might actually offer these young adults a long-term and sustainable economic gain.
The TV Networks are set to open up profit-sharing arrangements any day now. This NIL thing is really building to something meaningful.
/S....if not blatantly obvious already
They had just posted him being officially signed yesterday but the tweet has been deleted now. No bueno. Wonder who "tampered" with him. I expect this means he got a bigger check.
I think he has also committed to like 6 different schools at various times. Like, he left Utep, went elsewhere, came back etc.
He played first two years at UTSA and then followed his coach from UTSA to Pacific but then went back to UTSA after a year because his coach recruited over him so he wasn't starting.
It sounds like he is chasing a bag. I miss the days when an official signature meant something. It does for everybody but college athletes apparently.
Okay I was almost certain I saw that too but I couldn't find it once this new broke. Glad I'm not going insane.
Until "signing" with a team means "signed a contract" with a team, college sports will remain the farce that it currently is.
Wow. Need to get a starting SG and starting SF. Not a good position to be in.
I want Tyler Johnson to start at the 3 spot as I think he is better than Rodney from Cal and want Ryan Jones in the mix at 4 and 5 with Poteat, Burnham, and Wessler.
Shooting Guard is probably the biggest need to pair with Jaydon Young. It's the one spot we are definitely not two deep.
At some point, a signature from a transfer needs to be a contractual agreement (I'm more understanding of a high school kid changing his/her mind).
But this process starts in high school.
Some of these kids will have been at a new school every year from ages 15-22.
The fly-by-night "Academies" that offer no real education need to be reigned in by States and then some actual rules need to exist in the college transfer process.
Most 15 year-olds who are really good athletes will never make a dollar in professional sports, we need to stop treating every one of them like they are preordained to be multimillionaires.
This is something that is not talked about enough. I don't think it's good for a player's academic or athletic growth to be switching schools every year.
Can we change the term "committed"? None of these kids are committed to anything but themselves. They are definitely not committed to a school.
Just say you are committed to the biggest bag you can get. At least you can then respect the honesty.
It's actually already separated. They commit. Then they sign. Signed is (was) the firm agreement.
I'd be in favor of allowing kids to sign when they "commit". Then they are locked into the first year (unless certain changes, coaching change, medical, etc). This would also keep schools from holding kids until signing day stringing them along in case they have someone fall out.
So "offering" a scholarship is okay when it's not valid? These things haven't changed in 50 years and the kids are no more or less committed than they were when the bag was under the table. The scholarships offers still are conmitable.
Bingo - it's a two way street. Coaches give out offers that aren't 'committable' all the time. Scholarships are pulled all the time at a moments notice. However, a kid walking back a 'commitment' is more visible than a coach yanking a scholarship.
But I've always said that the word commitment is dumb. It should be called 'intent to sign' or something like that.
OR just make it a job offer with an expiration date. Enough of the commitments, verbals, etc.
Except now even when they sign it doesn't mean a thing. Hokies didn't announce Burnham, Brown or Ivy Curry as official until this week when each did sign. Ivy Curry signed and by next morning had retracted it.
This is 'loophole' is only for transfers, correct? And it's due to the financial aid calendar?
I don't think it's a loophole anymore and I imagine even incoming Freshmen could employ it if they chose to. It's a court created highway. There are no longer any restrictions to transferring. NCAA now allows Immediate eligibility.
AP News article on Immediate Eligibility
My thought is if a player renege after signing they should lose that year of eligibility without the normal change of coach, etc. They made a commitment or contract and then tried to break it. I am not sure the lawyers would rule against the NCAA on enforcing that as the players made an written agreement.
If there was a good way to make "offers" bindable, I might be on board. I understand the need to account for players not excepting your "offer" so it is probably not feasible.
I wouldn't argue that the non-comittable offer wasn't a prelude to this. The whole concept is ridiculous.
But this is a slightly different situation. This would be like VT telling this kid that his scholarship/GIA was **poof** a week before classes start.
If this is okay, then scholarships shouldn't be binding on schools.
Have 3 bad games in a row??? 👋 👋
Its my problem with the fiasco that has become NIL....athletes have so much supposed value and "deserve" this and that, but in the real world here's how it works--if you dont meet your expected value, you end up unemployed.
The schools and people supplying NIL $$ are gonna figure this out soon. I have a feeling athletes are gonna have a harsh wave of reality crash down on them and in a few years be in a much more disadvantaged place than they started.
Trust me, being an employee ain't the panacea that is being envisioned for them.
see, it's never going to be even. If a school dicks over a player (say, by pulling his scholly after 3 bad games), then they risk PR blowback and could struggle to land quality players in the future. No player will really get blowback for a dick move like this because schools are scrambling all over each other to land decent portal transfers. If Miami is dumping half a mil for a middling center/forward, you think they're going to look too hard at whether a player is a mercenary?
i thought that in the real world, if you don't meet your expected value, you just find a way to shuffle from role to role within the same organization and somehow always wind up on my project team
whew this hit close to home.
The amount of people skating by on the bare minimum is absolutely staggering to me. I seemingly meet people weekly with 20 year experience that struggle with the most basic of things.
Yeah, it's amazing.
I swear to God if someone else looks at me in bewilderment because I sent them a link to a document in SharePoint rather than an attachment in an email
"Hey do me a solid and review, send back to me with any changes highlighted in green."
ETC190652FinalReport_EM_RA_JR_DS_SIGNED_final2(4).doc
"Great, small changes. I approve. Finalize the edits, save as a PDF and send to so-and-so for their review"
People will allude that the technology has passed them by and "delegate" for help and a "training" opportunity.
Then you realize that they are incapable of any system or system updates after 2000 and have been delegating 90% of their jobs for over half their careers
Then their salary is 3x what you make and they have a pension to fall back on if they ever retire, but stick around longer since they've been doing less than the bare minimum for years.
That sounds oddly specific.....
I joke that I've used the internet since before some of my coworkers were born; however I do admit it still takes me a stupid amount of time to find and post a GIF on TKP.
There's a name for it. The Peter Principal. Long cited and fairly true whether decades ago or now.
Oh man, sounds like my dream job. Where do I sign up?
In the real world you are paid for production, need, value. C list employee are paid modest raises and managed out at the first opportunity- they aren't hoping from company to company getting better "offers" every other week. In fact meh employees get zero offers in today's economy. In the real world job hopping is a HUGE red flag on most resumes unless you posses a unique skill. G5 small forward not being one of those if we are comparing. NOTHING in modern college basketball resembles the "real world" If college kids today demanded pay to come visit our office and interview- they would be told to fuck off. If a mid employee tried to extort me because some hack company down the road offered them well above market rate, I would also tell them to fuck themselves. Nothing like this is the real world.
there you have it. there is a reason this problem doesn't exist at the D3 level
This is what has been bugging me about this on-going line. Just because you don't think a skill should be valued the way it is, doesn't mean it isn't valued that way. Blaming the people accepting the value that others are putting on their skill as opposed to the system that is assigning the values just seems ass backwards to me.
1. I'm not doing that. I am stating the fact that there are hundreds of G5/mid major players out there. This is not a high major/lottery pick kid. That is a fact. 2. You won't be able to apply this logic when the bubble bursts and Lynn Kidd is not getting half a million dollars a year. That is coming, and it won't be because players "got worse/had less skills".
Nope, it won't be because they got worse, it'll be because the value has changed. And that also won't be because of anything the players did. So I absolutely will be able to apply the same logic, because nothing I said has a number value attached to it. I'm saying don't blame the players for the busted ass system. They didn't build it. We also shouldn't blame them for whatever busted ass system comes next.
Meh... average G5/low major forward? in no way shape or form is that unique. Wofford is low major for reference. You could argue mid-major, but those types of players are much much more in abundance than NBA lottery picks or even high D1 players in the portal.
Meh employees always jump around and get great offers. I've worked with 100s of people I'd never recommend, in fact I'd say that I'd actually recommend maybe 5% of the people I've worked with. The list I'd like to work with again is even smaller. The world is filled with meh employees and the people that job hopped the most had the better titles and better pay.
Eh- to a point. You have 6 jobs in 2 years - red flag. big time. They may jump for one raise, etc. Constant jumping? issue
anyone who doesn't job hop is a sucker. More pay and, in the current market, no downsides. We have hired multiple engineers who left for a competitor across town and came back within 5 years with nice raises for both moves. Those of us who have been here throughout have gotten decent raises to keep us from straying, but not nearly what the other company is offering. The only downside is they are paying through the nose because the project is way behind so you're being compensated for jumping into a meatgrinder... Still, anyone who doesn't job hop is a sucker.
That said, I am a sucker. I hate the disruption caused by people leaving and I don't want to be the cause of that. Which usually means I'm at a job way past when I should have told them to shove it, but it is what it is.
As an Engineer who has worked with one company since College (I was an intern junior and senior years), I have nothing against longevity. I get bonuses for continued employment, leave time increases for employment time, and bigger ESOP contributions. I also average about 5.5% salary increases a year and know that I am making more than my fellow CE graduates in the area that do similar jobs. I don't feel I am sucker. My company rewards me for staying.
That said, I was asked to review a resume for a potential VP at the company. I looked at his ten year resume with 6 different companies. I responded with either he is jumping for a pay raise constantly, can't settle anywhere, or lasts just long enough for people to realize he is incompetent. I recommended against his hire, and was told he was starting the next week. Unfortunately it turned out he was #1 and #3.
Like I said, my company does a decent job. We've been averaging about 7.5% yearly raises and they are generous with bonuses and retention incentives. But how do you compete with a company that says "pick your best year's pay, including over time and bonuses, and we'll tack on 30% to set your base salary." Even typing that makes me a little sick to my stomach because I turned it down due to not wanting the stress or red tape of that company. Were I a younger man, maybe I could stick it out for a few years and cry all the way to the bank.
Agreed. A co-worker went to go work directly for a bigger developer in the Lynchburg area. The man was and is a true self admitted asshole, but he is paying my former co-worked $250k a year to be his lick spittle and ram rod with a backend of the development project and high six figure bonus if he makes it 5 years. There is a part of me that wonders if I could have dealt with the crap but glad I don't have to.
For my field, if you have never worked some place for 5 years you've probably never seen your mistakes in action. If you haven't jumped a round a bit then you probably haven't seen how other people do things and potentially are stuck doing things the same way as you started (not always true).
I wouldn't have accepted a VP that didn't have any longevity in a company. That says they've been title chasing and/or they probably don't work well with others. Or they failed and had to move on (which isn't always them, thats just part of the job to be the fallguy). But if that happened 6 times in 10 years then that's bad.
You and me and the tree in the corner, I am honestly surprised they looked at a person that jumped regularly for a VP role. Luckily my firm got bought out less than 2 years later, and the new company has increased my pay by about 50% over the last 6 years. Nice to feel valued.
If your main/only priority is salary, that's probably true. But if your only priority is salary, you and I are very different people. (I don't mean you, I just mean generally speaking)
I work in biotech in VA and I have little doubt I could get a 50% raise if I crossed the river to take a job on the I-270 corridor. But I love where I work, and I'm super happy with my position. I wouldn't say no to a little more money, but even a 50% raise isn't going to be life-changing money for me.
With all due respect, salary should be very high on your list. Unless you are in a union, everyone is one bad manager away from being face fucked out of a company. It literally just happened to me a month ago with a company I have been with for 11 years with multiple excellent reviews and at least one mid year promotion. Didn't matter. New manager comes in this time last year, doesn't have a fucking clue what she's doing, starts listening to the most toxic people in the org for advice (and I do mean toxic, the one in particular has had numerous HR violations stemming from documented sexism and bigotry) who told me the second I was working alongside him that he didn't value the job my role did and didn't understand why it existed.
10 months later, I'm getting the first mediocre review of my career, withheld pay and bonus, and within 2 months I'm let go and currently looking for a job.
You absolutely should always be looking out for yourself. Never tie yourself too strongly to any company because those companies don't give a shit about you. You're expendable at the first opportunity it becomes convenient for them.
Amen. There are a ton of "mergers and acquisitions" in my line of work. I've seen this 100%. Leadership is too weak to actually "aquire" a company and re-badge people- that's mean. Instead they "merge" and mom and pop company A who got by with shit benefits, 1 HR person, no travel, etc. is like "hey we survived on a shoe string, the combined company can too!" so they use whatever influence they have to survive- which means shit talk those in their same/similar "roles". I have seen it 100 times. It is better to be handed a pink slip on day 1 of the merger than to be strung out and play politics with someone's career. My least favorite thing about the corporate world. Step 1- sell to an investment bank that does everything BUT invest in employees. 2. Don't win new business, thus "growth" means buying other companies. 3. Don't actually acquire shit... play politics, horse trade, etc and "merge" 2 competitive businesses that do their own thing together. What could fucking go wrong?
So true. For the most part, not all, I loathe PE firms. I too have dealt with enough M&A's that I would rather a pink slip/severance day one vs being strung along on bullshit vision, mission, and objectives.
Grant it, the ones I've done not involving PE have been more rewarding from a company enhancement, culture, and P&L perspective.
I hope you aren't referring to Professional Engineering firms..
Private Equity. They specialize in buying other companies
and effectively stripping them for parts.participating actively in their businesses to help them grow and achieve their full potentiallol!! yes!! They are in the money business... not the employee business. without question.
Once you realize that you and understand that, it can be quite beneficial. I worked for a small business that were bought by a PE. The PE was obviously bundling capabilities to sell and they kept wanting us to spend money to expand, they actually invested. The owners worked out a great bonus package for profit sharing for 401k contributions and they sold in 2008, so while everyone was eating their lunch in the markets I made a boat load and then bought cheap. You can use them just as much as they use you.
PE- Private Equity
Now he is down to Auburn, UCF, and Wake Forest. Says to me Bruce Pearl was the Genesis for his decommitment.
Fuck you Jay Bilas, Fuck you Bill Self, you fucking fucks. Ruining college basketball. Fuck unlimited transfers too.
your disillusionment is shared. Its all a money grab now, and VT doesn't have all the monies
Thing of it is, I have heard disillusionment all around. Even from schools that have the monies, I haven't heard any fan or alum say anything positive about NIL.
I think some people have shit in their mess kit, and it's taking a while for the smell to hit the crowd. There's no way what's happening now is sustainable.
I hope these young athletes are receiving good advice and are handling their finances accordingly. I have no idea how these payments are set up, but I can just see a 19-year-old getting $500k, spending it, then getting a tax bill at the end of the year that they may never have the means to pay off.
I don't know how I would have handled $500k at 19, but I would have liked to have been given the chance to find out...
even me, brother. But I can tell you this, I wouldn't have spent it as well at 19 as I would now at 35. I didn't have a good financial education growing up and so I've had to learn things on my own. Some things through books and research. Some through painful consequences of dumb decisions.
Dont get me wrong... we all know there are 100% overpaid people in the "real world" too. But even they don't have this bargaining power and freedom of movement. Hell if a CEO hops jobs, people notice- in not a good way. I would never shun Lynn Kidd for getting paid based on his "name image likeness" there are people with zero skills that are instagram millionaires. Their skill is big boobs, etc. There are people that prank people on youtube and make a living. I don't begrudge that. My issue is this is not NIL, and because of that my favorite college team won't be competitive.
I don't disagree at all. I'm just curious about how all of these payments are being handled and what withholdings, etc. are being taken out. I hope they're getting sound financial advice, because they could put themselves in very bad situation very quickly. Also curious about the fee structures and who's hands are in the pot for these collectives that are supposed to be going directly to the athletes. This whole thing is just a shit show. As good as it is for these athletes to be getting some money, I feel there's going to be a lot of unforeseen negatives in the near future.
Didn't see that one coming 😂
Wut
It's about that checks notes Big XII money.
It's about that Disney money
I imagine athletic fees and donors from their enrollment dwarfs Tech. 4th largest on campus in the Country at over 68k students.
I expect Northern Virginia Community College (enrollment 76,868) to start dominating college sports soon, the way UCF currently is.
Virginia Tech with its measly 30k students just won't be able to keep up with the big boys.
You laugh but Liberty 130k+ residential and online students are helping to build a war chest in Lynchburg.
Let's be honest on their number...they count every person that ever took an online class that did not complete a degree as a "current student". Residential student amount is only 15,500. They claim 115,000 online students.
They don't need alumni to build a war chest. The Falwell followers provide that war chest through donations to the extended "ministries".
Do the online students pay into the "student activity fees"?
No, they don't.
