Hokies were slated in as the two seed against #6 UCLA. They have the longest travel of any team in all of the Regional selections. (One of the criteria for softball is supposed to limit travel and the other two schools in the UCLA region are Grand Canyon University/San Diego St) Getting slated against #6 is another aspect that shows the committee downgraded the ACC compared to rankings/metrics. Hokies were 17-20 in most metrics even with the loss to GT. This selection essentially says they were 27th.
ACC as a whole got the FSU football treatment, with Duke getting the #10 Regional Host while they finished top 5 in almost every metric that the committee was supposed to use. Florida St and Clemson also saw 3-4 spot drops compared to their metrics.

Comments
Saw this last night and wondered why we were so low. Committee did it to the ACC across the board. Getting to the Super Regionals was going to be a tall order anyway. This seeding makes it infinitely more difficult. That said, LET'S GO!!!
HOKIES!!!!
I'm gonna say it::
Screw the ACC leadership that got its own conference to this spot. The same to the NCAA/ESPN elitist jerkoffs.
Let's bury our competition to send a message.
To win a national championship, you have to beat someone good eventually. Might as well get it out of the way early.
Every SEC team got in
When are the games? I'll be LA next week and will go if the timing works.
Schedule According to PAC12 Website
Of course, my timing is perfect. I'll be there 3/20-23. So I'll be there the days they aren't playing.
ooof
guess there's just one thing left to do...
Yay! More Hokie action in SoCal. Very convenient! Trying to get to game 1... should start before rush hour and end after rush hour. Excellent!
Would be nice if the home plate ump would call it both ways. Very wide strike calls against the Hokies in the top of the 1st.
Can somebody explain why they put the runner back on third?
I think it was because the challenged out call was the 3rd out of the inning. So, the defense stops playing with the out call.
Based loaded with no outs, and we only get 1 run across. Really hope that doesn't come back to bite us in the end.
4-0 Hokies after 5. Fucking E$PN graphic also had our coaches name as Pete A'mour.
Why the fuck is the runner out when the fielder enters the basepath and gets run into? Runner is going point to point. The fielder getting in the way is their fault.
Would love an explanation of this too. The announcers said it so matter of fact like it was not even something to be questioned. But I agree. Why should the defender be allowed to interrupt the base path if a runner?!!
Runner interference. A runner, or coach for that matter, may not impede a fielder from executing a play. Basically the fielder has the "right-of-way".
4-1 heading to the bottom of the 6th. Rose just made an incredible play to corral the throw from the catcher and tag out a stealing runner to close out the top of the 6th.
5-1 going into the 7th
5-1 after 6. Lemley going for the complete game.
Ladies close it out 5-1 with a CG by Lemley for her 50th career win.
HOKIES and UCLA at 2PM today on ESPN.
I'm seeing 5pm on E$PN+.....did something change?
I'm looking at the ESPN website scoreboard. It shows the game on the main channel.
5pm EST and 2pm PDT. You are both right.
Definitely not on ESPN on the east coast. NHL playoffs on that. Might be on ESPN2, but the guide doesnt say which game will be on. I suspect that ESPN2 is actually not covering 1 specific game but jumping around with updates and look ins across the tournament.
ESPN website has us at 5pm (Eastern) on ESPN regular. Hockey doesn't start until 8pm.
All good folks. My FIOS guide was wrong.....
"What I told you was true, from a certain point of view."
Whew. Had me worried there for a minute.
A little bit of respect for the competition here... UCLA is focused -- Still like the Hokies today, regardless, but respect:
Not gonna lie. That was impressive. #RESPECT
Hell yeah Cori McMillan with the 3 run bomb to start things off
Weak sauce on that challenge. That was more to stem momentum than a real challenge
4-0 Hokies after a Greene RBI Single. Going to bottom of 2nd
Ritter and Peck team up to throw a runner out at the plate to keep UCLA scoreless after the ball got by a diving Addy Greene.
Hokies second baseman bobbles a ball with the bases loaded leading to two UCLA runs.
4-2 Hokies
Was always going to be a tough play moving to her left into the outfield... but those fine margins show up in games like this
Lemley loses control. 4-4 now. UCLA still batting with no outs and two on
Grein comes in and limits the damage.
5-4 UCLA leads in top of 5th
How the fuck was that called a ball on the passed ball there. It was right down the center of the strike zone!
UCLA doing what they do.
We gotta get our shit together here and not let this get outta hand.
UCLA leads 5-4 after 4 innings.
The Hokies got off to a hot start scoring 4 runs early, then cooled off substantially. UCLA on the other hand has been beating us to death with excellently placed base hits. We've had a couple of errors, but nothing egregious IMO. Just have to get the bats going again.
They've also had a few balls take fortuitous bounces or just get past an infielder bt inches.
Addy Green with a BOMB! 5-5
Greene homer ties it at 5 in the 5th
Grein was a little shaky when she first came in, but she seems to be dialed into the groove right now. Need some runs in the top half of the 6th here to give her some cushion.
Hopefully one is enough!
I don't like the rule but she is clearly blocking the plate before she has the ball!
Throw takes her up the line, though, no? Is she supposed to let the ball go? Not a good send, regardless.
That one could have gone either way IMO. The catcher initially set up in a good position and then moved as the ball was arriving. The key here, as the announcers said, was that our runner was so far out of the baseline the umpire didn't really have another choice.
Tough call either way though.
BS call, catcher was blocking baseline before she had possession of the ball.
Ladies take the lead 6-5 in the top of the 7th. Should have been 7-5 but they overturned obstruction by the catcher and called our runner out of the basepath. Bullshit call, but we have the lead.
.
That's why you can't walk the leadoff batter......
Really, really tough loss.
This one lies at the feet of the pitching staff IMO. Way too many walks at extremely inopportune times, not least of which was the one here in the bottom of the 7th to the leadoff batter.
That's fucking horseshit by the umps.
Looking at some of these other regionals these other teams aren't traveling that far at all.
Hokies traveled about 1000 miles more than any other team selected I believe
Softball plays again at 10pm EST but that is subject to change as the GCU vs SDSU game is delayed right now
Meanwhile Baseball is tied 7-7 in the 7th after blowing a 7-2 lead at UVA
Obligatory (ok probably not Obligatory, but I can't resist any reference in gif form)
Lol baseball what are we doing? Fundamentals are hard
Amazing they escaped that
Can't believe Cooke didn't get to third there
Baseball insisting on taking Hokies fans to Game 2 of Softball.
And the baseball team chokes it all the way again
It's unreal how pathetic this team has been this year late in games.
...and another Hokies Diamond team blowing a lead in the bottom of the last inning to lose. Baseball loses 10-9 giving up a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning
Given the reprioritizing of funds within the AD it's tough to even get mad about it. We will be fortunate to be competitive in anything except football going forward
Have to pour everything into football (should've been doing that since Beamer retired) hope you get into the P2 and then use the extra TV dollars to invest in other sports.
One thing that popped between innings was they showed the big screen at UCLA Softball and they were thanking like 25 corporate sponsors for supporting their softball program. They were big name companies. Curious what the Sponsorships look like for Hokies Diamond sports.
UVA baseball has an LED advertising banner sitting behind home plate that was running ads as well. Wonder how much that brings them annually.
GCU leads SDSU 5-4 in the bottom of the 6th
GCU blowing it open now 9-4 in top of 7th
SDSU made it interesting. Got it back to 9-7 with bases loaded but that's where it ended.
Hokies face GCU next.
I think it's Grand Canyon U.... Which is essentially the same as Liberty U but out here in the west.
And GCU just knocked out the hokies... Just didn't have it, playing after midnight east coast time.
Yeah Long day yesterday for me and the Hokies but now they have lots of time on their hands.
It's just not meant to be
