Baseball this week (31-14) has
Wed 6pm at Bibberty (Not sure if televised on ESPN+)
Fri 7pm host Miami (21-25) (ACCNX)
Sat 7pm Miami (ACCN)
Sun 1pm Miami (ACCNX)
Softball has the ACC Tournament starting Thursday Georgia Tech in the Quarterfinals at 730pm as the #3 seed. If Hokies win and things go chalk then they would play #2 FSU on Friday. Duke is the #1 seed. Winning the ACCT would go a long way to putting them back in line for a Regional hosting spot. Right now I think they are on the 2 line for Regionals but in the first two or three in that position. Right now Hokies are 18th in the polls and FSU is 16th so knocking them out of ACCT would be a big step to hosting Regional.

Let's Go!!!
HOKIES!!!
Nine Hokies honored with All ACC honors.
Three first team, four second team and two third team.
First Team Addy Greene, Cori McMillan and Emma Ritter.
Second team Bre Peck, Emma Lemley, Emma Mazzarone and Cam Fagan
Third Team Michelle Chatfield and Maija Louko.
Only surprise there is Chatfield being that low after the season she has had at the plate.
Baseball trails 7-4 in the 3rd at Bibberty
Woof...baseball asleep at the wheel. Now trail 12-4. Just ridiculous the varying performance from this team.
12-5 now middle of 5th
12-6 in 7th inning
Cannizaro hits his third homerun of the day to make it 13-8. A 434 foot shot.
13-8 your final.
Hokies errors and walks early in the game were too much to overcome. Really poor effort early blew up on the Hokies.
all that hope that was built-up last weekend just got sucked right out of the room.
Just glad there was no video
👏 STOP 👏 PLAYING 👏 AT 👏 DIPLOMA MILL U (COVERUP CRIME U ALSO ACCEPTABLE)
ACC Championship Softball
#1 Seed Duke needed a two run homer in bottom of the 7th to walkoff Boston College.
Clemson leads UVA 2-0 in top 2nd
FSU plays ND at 5pm
Hokies face GT at 730pm on ACCN
Clemson beats UVA 8-1 to face Duke tomorrow
FSU beats ND 2-0. If Hokies win they will face the Seminoles.
The Duke stadium is TINY why is the ACC tournament being played there!!
Georgia Tech leads 1-0 in top of 2nd.
Hokies escape a jam in third. Still 1-0
Hokies tie it at 1 with a Greene sac fly
Georgia Tech gets a solo shot in 4th. Lead 2-1
Grein goes 4 2/3rd inning. Mazzarone in the circle to close out 5th. Gets the strikeout. Now the bats need to wake up.
Mazzarone gives up a 3 run shot in top of 6th.
Hokies trail 5-1 now
Seems anticlimatic to throw Lemley out there now.
Hokies now 0 for 12 with runners on base. Hosting a Regional looking very dim.
6-1 now in the 7th
Have a bad feeling about this game. Bats just aren't here tonight. Which is ironic since ESPN hyped all the HR's these two teams hit all season.
Also Mrs. Fireman is under the weather and hasn't watched any of the game.
It's tough to watch the Hokies softball team when the bats are dead (something that is a trend with Pete's teams from time to time).
This is the first time I have seen it this year when it's not alot of offspeed and drop balls. GT pitching has been slinging it and still the only Hokie to make real contact is Ritter.
Ritter again. Homerun. Has all three Hokies hits so far.
Pretty embarrassing performance by eight out of nine hitters. Have to think that puts them on the road for Regionals.
6-2 loss
Baseball trails Miami 4-0 in the 3rd.
4-1 bottom of the 4th
5-4 now in bottom of the 5th. Homeruns by Ebel and De🍸 who moved into 5th all time in Hokies career homeruns to help the Hokies get back in it.
Hokies tied it at 5 in bottom of 5th
Hokies take the lead 6-5 in the bottom of the 6th courtesy of Deja Ebel
Hokies getting hosed by a bad call in 7th on a clear swing ruled ball four so instead of one out runners on 1st and 2nd Miami now has bases loaded with no outs.
Coach got a bench warning but it was egregious enough to warrant getting tossed
Hokies turn a double play but Miami ties it at 6
Now Miami gets a bench warning for arguing strikes
Schumacher after getting the double play comes back from a 3-0 count to strike out the last batter
Between innings the Miami coach continued arguing and got tossed
Home plate umpire is pulling an Angel Hernandez behind the plate. Micheletti leading off 7th gets hit by a pitch but umpire called it a foul ball and then he strikes out on next pitch
Now we have a situation where home plate umpire has called time but Miami pitcher goes ahead from set and throws a fastball in anyway
Schumacher gets two more strikeouts in the 8th. Hokies pitchers now have 13 strikeouts on the evening.
Hokies hitters though have struck out 11 times.
Hokies blow a bases loaded one out opportunity and fail to score.
6-6 going to the 9th
I don't understand that squeeze play with the heart of the order up.
I didn't either. Deep fly ball scores a run. Wild pitch which that pitcher threw six of scores a run. Only threat was double play ball which seems unlikely with his speed.
Miami lead off hitter claiming hit by pitch. Earlier umpire refused to review Micheletti being hit by pitch but decides to review this one.
Now Ebel drops a foul ball and the hitter goes back to plate and crushes a homerun
Another review drags on this ugly 9th inning
Welp now the Hokies need at least two in bottom of the ninth after Kirtner allows another homerun.
Seven out of eight runs for Miami via the homerun tonight.
8-6 Miami lead going to bottom of the 9th
Hokies lose 8-6.
This was a painful thread to read...
It was a painful watch.
What was worse? Watching or writing it up?
Watching it...with the inconsistency the umpire put in and all the stoppages it dragged on forever. Might have been a different answer if it turned out in the Hokies favor.
Love the suicide squeeze bunt call in that situation. Demartini has to make contact there. Huge wasted opportunity.
He still could have gone back to third when Demartini didn't though. No one covered third and third baseman was closer to home than the runner
Ball basically bounced right in front of plate so pretty difficult for Demartini to get his bat on it.
Hokies up 4-3 in the 6th on Senior Night. Neff was dealing early with 7 strikeouts through four. Weather is a factor though with one delay already.
Hokies bullpen implodes once again. Hokies trailing 7-4 now in bottom of the 6th.
Hokies get one back in bottom of the 8th but a controversial ball that appeared to be a foul was called fair and allowed Miami to get third out and officials refused to review it. Hokies had runners on first and third with Demartini at the plate.
Bottom of the 9th, 7-5
Hokies fail to capitalize with opportunity to move both runners on a wild pitch and Grady hit into game ending double play.
Hokies lose the series and drop to 13-13 in ACC play. Bullpen gave up 5 running the 6th inning to kill all the momentum early.
Baseball up 4-3 in the bottom of the 5th. Carson De 🍸 hit his 20th homerun. He is first Hokie to do that since 1996 when I was a freshman at Tech.
Bats came alive and 9-3 Hokies in bottom of the 6th
Hokies get 3 more. 12-3 in top of 7th.
12-4 in top of 8th.
Hokies win 13-4
That's amazing. I can't believe even Gavin Cross never made it to 20 in a season.
In 1981, Franklin Stubbs made it to 29!
And I remember him. Man, I'm getting old.
How is he not more famous as a Hokie? Dude played 11 years in the show.
By virtue of my advancing age, I saw Franklin play back in the day. Howsomever, the best Stubbs story lies in that good ol' Movie, Field of Dreams. Costner takes James Earl Jones to the ball p.ark in LA and they announced Stubbs, and/or it was on the scoreboard. I was already a big fan, so that was a real charge.
I used to watch Stubbs as well with a cooler of Bud on the right field hill. It's now the Beamer barn. Coach Hartman was a good guy too.
Loved the Hill; my two on-campus years I was in Lee hall so it was a short walk...
Well, things have not gone well now for our small ball teams. Blowing another lead against Duke, and needing to win to keep going.
Yeah didn't even want to talk about the meltdown against Duke yesterday. Fourth time blowing a 5+ run lead. Pitching staff outside of Renfrow Stieg and Kirtner all need an overall.
Tonight they decided to just straight blow it right from the jump. Down 6-0 in the third
10-1 now in the 5th....just no making it up
12-4 in the 6th...
19-9 in Eight innings. Season collapse complete.
Only bright spot was Ben Watson set the all time record for hits in a season with 93.
For a while, I thought we had a good baseball team this year.
ACC play is always humbling. We kick the shit out of Liberty, etc and drop series to the wakes, UVAs, Miami's NC States constantly. Rinse repeat.
Something has got to change on this baseball staff. The talent on the offensive side has been far too good to consistently collapse at the end of the year.
Pitching staff was a mess. They got lucky finding Renfrow could really pitch as he wasn't expected to be a starter for them..
Pitchers issued 227 walks in 470 innings. Add 37 HBP. 264 free trips. 158 of those trips in Conference play (does not include ACC Championship) in 266 innings. In ACC Championship they issued 13 walks and two HBP in two games. They usually came in bunches too, not spread out over innings.
Gave up 178 extra base hits on the season, 83 of them homeruns. Allowed 120 extra base hits in conference (4 per game avg), 63 of them homeruns (over 2 per game avg.) Add 12 more on two games of ACC Championship play, 4 of those homeruns. With walks ahead of alot of those long balls it multiplied the impact. Gave up avg of almost 7 runs per game in ACC play.
Kirtner and Renfrow were the only two that I would say were reliable and even Kirtner struggled with walks. Has 30 in 36 innings but he went 7-0 as a reliever AND led the team in wins. Renfrow as a true freshman starter was 6-4 in 15 starts. Pitched 75 innings with 32 walks, 13 homeruns and 78 strikeouts. Only challenge with him was he tended to have one bad inning so damage was focused. Perfect example was the third inning yesterday against NC St where he surrendered 6 runs in the 3rd inning. He walked two and gave up four hits leading to those runs.
Pitching was a disaster this year. Not counting the tournament we had 54 games, and scored 6 or more runs in 40 of those. Any decent team should be able to win every single one of those games when scoring 6 or more.
A full evaluation of the pitching staff and coaches is necessary, as is some change in one or both.
We scored 6 and gave up 7. Recipe to lose
We are both saying the same thing - our pitching was hot garbage once ACC play started
I mean sure, but with what money? We are all in on football, so everything else is going to suffer. A season like this might be our high bar going ing forward
A very true, but very tired refrain. We are like one of my nieces... we never have any money.
