My time as a Hokie fan began when I was 6 years old on November 6th, 1999. After, a blown 2 possession lead late in the 4th quarter in Morganhole, a scamper down the sideline and a Shayne Graham field goal later and I was hooked. I knew I wanted to play in Lane Stadium on Saturdays. At that time my family lived in rural NW Indiana. My graduating class would've been less than 70 people if I hadn't moved away and the high school had no chance of supporting a football team. Worse yet, outside of my parents who were VT alums, there wasn't college football. There was only Notre Dame... gross.
My family moved to Frederick, MD in 2005 when I was in middle School. I finally had a chance to play organized football. It could've gone worse, but I certainly didn't feel like I was going to be getting any scholarship offers either. Luckily, one of the other trumpet players in band class mentioned that his brother was in the drumline at VT. A new plan was born.
Highschool was a lot of band classes and Boy scouts. My free time largely consisted of video games, watching TV, and trying to make and fix things, especially electronics. This is a nice way of saying I broke a lot of stuff, sorry Mom. Academically I did pretty well to the point that I pretty much had my choice of what college I wanted to go to. Somehow, it came down to Larry Bird University Indiana St. and VT. When I visited Indiana St. I was treated like an absolute rock star. Had a pretty decent scholarship offer too. When I visited VT, the professor I talked to told me that I shouldn't consider Tech for an undergrad degree, but that they had good graduate programs. This is obviously not the response I was looking for. Despite this, in the end obviously I ended up choosing VT.
As you may have guessed I joined the Marching Virginians my Freshman year and continued to do so following 3 years as well. I had a blast. Met many fantastic people. I wish I had the opportunity to do it all again. I would do so in a heartbeat.
I'm not a very religious person, but I also participated at the Wesley Foundation at Virginia Tech. I made a ton of good friends there. I went on 3 spring break mission trips with them. Including one to Swan Quarter, NC where I fell in love with barbeque. I liked it so much so that I actually built a small smoker on my balcony at Foxridge. If my AMA turns into a BBQ thread I will not be upset at all.
In addition to doing community service with the Wesley Foundation I participated heavily in intramural sports there. My Junior year I was even the captain. Despite being a "church group" and most of us having the athleticism of a middle aged dad we played tough. We were competitive in games where the refs would tell us we didn't have a chance. We also had a group that liked to play disc golf. Typically with a 40 in hand while we were chucking plastic. Bro nights with beerio kart, smash bros, and/or watching The League or Blue Mountain State at my apartment were pretty common too. I didn't realize it at the time, but apparently The Wesley Foundation picked up a bit of a reputation for being "the drinking college ministry" at the time. Whoops, I did my fair share to contribute to that. Still hang out with a lot of those people at least a couple times a year. Just really good people.
Academically things didn't necessarily go quite so well. I really struggled with linear algebra at the math empo my first semester there and I quickly gave up on majoring in mechanical engineering. I decided to major in music next before quickly realizing that I hate practicing by myself. I ended up pursuing a degree in Natural Resources Conservation because pretty much everyone in CNRE seemed like a pretty cool person and it seemed like half my classes I basically got to go hang out in the woods which seemed like a pretty good deal. After four years in college, I dropped out after the 2015 spring semester 18 credits short of a degree. I was struggling with anxiety and depression and knew that I wasn't going to be able to finish my remaining classes. Knowing what I was dealing with I did the responsible thing and went to therapy got my CDL.
I got a job with US Xpress delivering refrigerated and frozen goods to walmarts and sams clubs in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan from a distribution center in Auburn, Indiana (just north of Fort Wayne). I kind of enjoyed driving tractor trailers, but the schedule was awful and worked out such that I was missing at least one night of sleep a week. In addition the dispatchers were the opposite of helpful and after a year of feeling isolated I decided that I had enough of that.
Luckily for me, my parents had just bought a house in Floyd so I moved in there while I figured out what to do with my life. I got a job at the Hardee's on Price's Fork for around 9 months before getting a job working the late shift at the CFA in Hokie Grill. I really didn't like the job, but many of the people I worked with were awesome. In addition, I figured out how to get dining services to pay for the rest of the classes that I needed to graduate. So while working 55+ hours a week I finished up my degree in the spring of '19.
I felt on top of the world for the moment and was pretty proud of myself for finishing my degree, but had a hard time finding getting interviews, and the ones I did get always seemed to tell me that "you were our second choice!" For what ever that's worth. Insert Ricky Bobby quote here. I ended up getting a job the Valvoline Instant Oil Change in Christiansburg as I had picked up a bit of a hobby working on cars over the previous 6 or 7 years. Eventually I got promoted and help open a store in Roanoke before deciding to move closer to one of my good friends from college in Bristol.
I was looking forward to getting a house, but had a number that I wanted to save up for before I made the move. Unfortunately in the final 2 months of waiting the housing market exploded. I got a job at the Mercedes dealer in Kingsport, TN and rented an apartment with my buddy. It didn't take too long to find out that the owner of the dealership didn't really believe in paying a fair wage and in fact I know that they are still paying technicians there at the same rate that they did back in 1984! That and the rate of rent rapidly increasing convinced me to go to Raleigh, where I also had some friends, but also a much bigger job market.
I now work at a Euro focused shop in Raleigh, but also turned 30 last year which caused my to really reassess what I was doing with my life and to figure out what I really wanted. I did get diagnosed with ADHD which definitely explains some of my struggles in college, but I've also decided to go back to school while I'm working to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering again now that I have a better idea of how to manage myself.
I look forward to your questions and will save you one as I would like to announce that I'm 110% committed to team pie

You sound like a really cool College of Natural Resources grad like myself, and AssPocketFullofWhiskey. Good luck with the engineering degree. I like to tell myself now that I'm older I could probably handle the rigor of an engineering degree, but in reality I still can't do high level math very well.
First off, what was your CB handle when you were on the road?
Second, what movie have you seen the most times?
Third, what's your best intramural sports tale of glory?
Thanks. I always felt like I'm decently smart. Trying to use my brains and focusing was a whole other problem.
1. Jack Burton. My actual name is Will, but my high school friends are big John Carpenter fans.
2. As an adult it's got to be the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I'd consider myself a bigger Star Wars fan overall, but those movies were just so damn good.
2a. If we factor in childhood screen time Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Ace Ventura When Nature Calls, Good Burger, and Kung Pow Enter the First would make a run for the 1 spot too.
3. Tie game in mens basketball. One of the refs was from Wesley which I was very much opposed to. The other team takes a shot with less than 3 seconds and that ref made a very questionable foul call on the shot against us. I knew I had to leave the gym before I said something that I shouldn't. While I'm in the hallway suddenly I hear cheering and it sounds like people from Wesley. The other team had missed both the free throws and we made a half court+ buzzer beater to win the game.
I don't care what your real name is, you can't have a better CB handle than Jack Burton. π€
Criminally underrated movie.
The ole "Porkchop Express"...
"Swan Quarter, NC where I fell in love with barbeque. I liked it so much so that I actually built a small smoker on my balcony at Foxridge."
You the man!
What are some of your favorite BBQ places and why?
Do you have some good recipes for coleslaw or potato salad you could share? Full disclosure, I'm not into the creamy slaws or salads and am not a big mayo fan. Respect others who are, and happy to hear about mayo-heavy recipes, but not my cup of tea.
Trying to be as objective as possible, what do you think about living in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area? Daughter wants to go somewhere warm but wants to stay in the east for college if she goes. UNC-Duke-NC State are all places I think she should at least look at. Along with Wake Forest, Tennessee and (of course) VT. We will be passing through all of those areas this summer on a road trip.
She is just completing 9th grade, so not seriously looking at the schools in detail, but to just get a feel for the areas and would she be comfortable being there. She does not want to be in a big city (so no to Georgia Tech), but not in a tiny town with a few thousand people either. And wants to avoid high crime places (so no to VCU).
I don't like creamy coleslaw either.
Veggies of choice, I normally use cabbages and carrots but also use julienned broccoli stems instead of cabbage.
I like some heat bite in my coleslaw so I finely chop raw garlic to taste and toss that in, add salt, pepper and an herb like italian parsley or thyme.
toss in pickle juice depending on if you want it sweet (use sweet pickles) or tart. I like to use claussen dill pickle juice.
To tie it in, use just a bit of mayo or, yogurt. Taste and adjust.
Obviously the BBQ scene in NW Indiana was nearly nonexistent. However, when making trips to Virginia we'd often go to the Smokey Pig in Richmond (RIP, if anyone has any insight into their hushpuppy recipe please let me know) and Pierce's BBQ in Williamsburg. As an adult I discovered Q-Daddy's in Smithfield Virginia and highly recommend them. Lots of good stuff and the fried brisket sandwich is a standout. The owner grew up working in a CFA and it shows in a good way. Also, seemed like a good dude in the brief time I got to talk to him. I think French has already clued everyone in on the Bristol BBQ scene better than I could.
So far in NC I've found Prime BBQ in Knight Dale. The prices are high but they can rival my best stuff so I respect it. Doug Sals in Nashville, NC has some solid Carolina BBQ and the seafood smelled good, but the fried pork chops were phenomenal. They were breaded in a cornmeal based breading that I'd normally expect on catfish, but it was very good and reasonably priced. Parker's BBQ in Wilson is my new go to spot for Carolina BBQ. Apparently the fried chicken is good too, but it's hard for me not to order the pork. Only complaint, and a pretty non significant one at that, is that they are cash only. There is at least an ATM in the restaurant.
I can share what I do if you'd like, but most of my stuff is going to start with a healthy portion of Duke's. My mom does make a pretty good vinegar based slaw and I know the secret is to use pineapple slivers and with some juice to help balance the acidity of the vinegar.
Raleigh is probably one of the more relaxed cities I've ever been in. I don't go downtown much, but my biggest complaint is there is a much higher rate of homelessness than I'd like to see, but I don't know what the city expects when the cheapest housing they're willing to build is "luxury" apartments. The drivers around here could be better, but it's not terrible and there doesn't seem to be much crime as far as I can tell. At least for now it seems to be a pretty good fit although it continues to grow and doesn't show any signs of slowing down.
If you like vinegar based slaw vs. mayo based see below. Money
For one regular bag of slaw mix
2 TB spoons vegetable oil
3 TB spoons apple cider vinegar ( to taste)
celery seed (liberal amount)
Kosher salt
Pepper
1 TB Spoon grey poupon
small dash of honey- to taste
mix well in bowl, and slowly mix into slaw by hand... let sit in fridge for a couple hours before serving
My man dot gif
That looks a whole lot like the slaw I make with Greek yogurt, just minus the yogurt. I also have lemon juice but no oil. Will have to try that one.
I have been making a potato salad based on something a Romanian friend brought us one time that does not have mayo. Sous vide sliced potatoes in olive oil (or low and slow and the stove top, but that takes a lot of oil). You want them cooked but still firm enough not to mash when you chop up pretty small. Toss with diced olives, finely diced red onion and carrot and celery, and mix in a lot of chopped herbs - I use Italian parsley, oregano and chives. Then stir in chopped boiled egg, about one per every 2-3 parts potato. Add lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste. My wife prefers it over all the heavy mayo ones.
Thank you. Never heard of that one, but see some recipes online for it. Will have to try this/some of these.
What's the oddest thing you've ever witnessed where you said to yourself, 'WTF just happened'?
Best vacation you've ever had?
Stupidest thing you've ever done?
Nicest thing you've ever done for someone?
1. When I was backpacking in New Mexico one the other kids decided to start sprinting randomly one night in a very bizarre attempt to impress a girl. He ran right into a barbed wire fence.
Same trip much grosser story. There were many latrines that just didn't have walls. One time I glanced across a field to see a guy had such bad explosive diarrhea that he coated his entire back. I still don't know how that is possible.
2. Going to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota with my high school buddies. So many things went wrong and I still had an absolute blast. If it weren't for my cats, I might not have come back to the East Coast.
3. Me and the other "smart kid" in my 6th grade science class finished a project well before any of the other students. Next to us sat a paper clip and a large pair of scissors. I picked up the paper clip without thinking and asked him if he thought the scissors could cut through it. The answer was no, but the scissors did cut through my thumb pretty well once they slipped down the paper clip. I still have a visible scar 20 years later.
4. There are many things I've done that required a lot more time, effort , and/or money to be nice. The thing that sticks with me is when I was managing the Valvoline in Roanoke ask to get off work early. The response given the information I had really should've been no, but he was one of my better workers and this seemed a bit out of character for him so I said yes even though it left us very short handed. I later found out that he got back home just in time to stop his girlfriend from a suicide attempt. That still feels pretty heavy when I think about it.
Northern Tier by any chance?
I did Philmont, but never got to do Northern Tier. Obviously Boundaries waters is the basically the same thing, but that wasn't related to Scouting. Actually of the 4 of us that went to BWCA, I was the only one to do Boy Scouts.
What is the beat thing and being in the matching Virginians and why is it Stick it in?
Seems a little early to be that sloppy, but I like your moxy kid.
The answer of course is Stick it in.
Did you get into ultimate frisbee during your time on campus? If so there is a really good chance we have crossed paths.
Favorite DG course near Tech?
Wasn't really into ultimate myself. A bit more running than my 5'9" 260 lbs frame liked, but probably needed. One guy in my hall my at Vawter played on a club team or something like that, well at least before he blew out his knee when we were playing full contact football.
The course at Mountain Lake (RIP) was far and away our favorite. Did some fun stupid stuff going up and down the mountain and off-roading cars I really shouldn't have to get there too!
I acquired a 1950's-ish MV's instrument and case a while ago and I don't really have a place for it. I have tried to re-home it a couple times, but have not been lucky in doing so. Do you or any MV friends you keep in contact with have any interest? I believe it is a clarinet, but I would have to crack it back open to be sure.

Sorry to hijack the AMA. My actual question for you is what is the coolest car you've gotten to drive/work on at the Euro shop? I worked in the detail department, but did a fair amount of tech work, at a Mercedes/BMW dealer all through HS and college. I learned to drive stick on mini while there (sorry mini owner), drove a few Mercedes Biturbos, and an ancient mercedes that still had a manual choke.
I love the old logo on the case! Not really sure what to do with it either, other than display it somewhere.
There are other cars that most people would consider cooler, but my 2 favorites were a 2018 E63 wagon and a Honda S2000. The wagon was especially fun as my service manager handed me the keys and said "we've had problems with this vehicle going into limp mode go make sure it doesn't do that anymore". That was the most fun I've ever had at work. Just launching a wagon past everyone in Kingsport. Driven 911s, an audi r8, and some nice Jags and Maserati's too.
An S2000 would be fun to drive. The dealership I worked for had a modified BMW hatch with a full set of BMW and Mercedes tools in the back to use for roadside assistance. It wasn't necessarily fun to drive, but it was a cool car.
An S2000 has always been my dream fun car. RWD little Honda that says nothing but fun. Probably never buy one at this point but I still dream about having one.
Fantastic little cars that have always just cost too damn much.
I remember the Mitsubishi 3000GT was a similar car at that time that a lot of people wanted.
They are a ton of fun. Accidentally bought one when I super lowballed a guy, but there were a number of issues that I had pointed out and think he just wanted out. Luckily, it was very easy to work on (outside of changing the damn starter) and got to drive it for a few years before selling it for 50% more than what I paid but needed something slightly more practical. Even my wife who understands I love cars but doesn't get it herself, got in and said "oh, now I understand."
I remember one time getting on the highway and seeing one and thinking "oooo, S2000." Then I got a little closer. "ooooOOO, cute girl driving an S2000"
"...that's my wife..."
50ish MV stuff? Didn't know they existed that long ago. If they had, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have ended up in the Highty Tighties in 68', but I just had to be in band and didn't realize the enormity of the rat year.
they didn't...started the year I got there ('73) or the year before I believe. the instrument case itself might be that old.
My bad.
MVs only been around since 74. That's HT gear. And despite housing possibly the most pointless marching band instrument, that case is pretty fucking sweet.
To get further off topic, where did that pewter beer mug come from?? I need one
I apologize for being misinformed, I haven't done much digging on the instrument and just took what I was told at face value. I do know a little about the pewter stuff (actually aluminum alloy) they are RWP Wilton pieces and made in the 60s. I'm not sure why the plate appears to depict the GLC as Alumni Hall though.
All of that stuff found it's way to me from a friend that wheels and deals football helmets. He ended up with that lot in one of his trades and he gifted it to me.
Dude, no apologies necessary. Rat year burned VT trivia into my brain.
That's a hell of a gift. Nice stuff, and just unfortunate it's hard to find quality Hokie drinkware these days. Best I've got is an 80s coffee mug my grandma got from a friend that kept pens in it for years
My chosen instrument, and I was pretty darned good at it, was the French horn. Somehow, I was able to march with it all through high school, and we had a very good marching band with plenty of complicated maneuvers, etc. Got to VT though, and the powers that were wouldn't march with French horns. Said the mouthpiece was too small to be able to go through the very technical nature of the halftime shows. They made me play tenor drum my rat year, though I played horn in concert band. My one sophomore quarter I rebelled and they then decided to give me an E-flat alto baritone horn, with music that had to be transposed, which I frankly decided to ignore. Most fun I ever had playing in the HTs since I got to improvise all the way and since I was a decent musician, I was able to fit right in and never got called on it. It also set the stage for my transition to playing fiddle and harmonica in later bands once I was released from the music on the page mentality. I don't know, but I'd bet the MVs would have let me march with my horn.
If you are still looking for a home for that clarinet and case, my mom would be very into it. She was a clarinet player in concert band at Tech in the early 70's for one quarter until she realized how bad she was compared to everyone else and quit. Her words.
Email me. [Redacted]
This jives a lot of my interactions with the Wesley crew. I remember asking a staffer why he chose student ministry. I expected some sort of response about evangelism or something or other but his answer was "I learned ministry staff are allowed to do intramural sports and that was a big deal for me in college so it seemed like a good fit."
Which version or smash is your favorite? Favorite type of character (fast/slow, strong/weak, range/melee?). Which characters are your go tos?
Considering there have only been two campus ministers at Wesley in my lifetime, I'm guessing you had to have been talking to Bret. Actually got to hang out with him last weekend at a wedding in Philly. Awesome guy. Fun fact he was a back up punter for VT I don't remember the exact years, but I know he got to go to the Sugar Bowl in 2000. He's currently the defensive coordinator at Blacksburg Highschool.
Melee and Link. I'm probably slightly better than the average player, but not amazing at Smash and mostly like to be obnoxious with projectiles.
Follow up: are you a purist who turns off most of the items or do you leave them on and rain down chaos?
I prefer no to low items, but it depends on who I'm playing with.
Bret is good peeps! I tailgate with him and his fam when I make it back for games.
my son likes to play link and rain down projectiles. Just makes it all the more satisfying when I pull off a reflector with wolf and nail him with his own boomerang/arrow/bomb.
I hate coleslaw!
Whats the 69 for?.......in your name?
Go to BBQ meat for group of friends?
Can you actually tell a difference between the different types of wood smoke? Explain
1. That sucks
2. Ask your mom
3. Depends on the situation. If I have more time and there's a decent number of people I'll do a butt or a brisket. Shorter on time and ribs or pit beef work well. Feeling frisky, maybe something else completely. If I'm trying to impress a crowd I'll make some bacon for mac n cheese and baked beans.
4. Absolutely, if you're really curious get a pack of chicken thighs or whatever you like and try out some different woods. My usual go to for pork is a blend of apple wood and hickory and often use pecan for beef. Apple and cherry, while not sweet per se, has a fruitiness to it, and pecan and hickory are a bitty nutty. Apple and cherry are much more mild than hickory and pecan is in the middle in terms of being pungent.
I usually use apple and hickory on pork as well. Especially when I do ribs.
What cut/grade do you use for the pit beef? What cook temp and final temp? I have not tried that, but am shopping Saturday for something to grill for the family this weekend.
Prime or choice top round ( Costco always has a good supply). Probably cooks around 250F with a final temp of 135F, but you can easily adjust to your preferred doneness.
This is a fantastic guide to get you started. That beef with some onions and horseradish sauce on some grilled buns is heavenly!
https://amazingribs.com/tested-recipes/beef-and-bison-recipes/amped-roas...
Thank you! Not that different than the Chicago style italian Beef I have made before, though a different rub and the starting much lower and searing later is different. 4-5 hours is a lot more manageable than 14+++ for the whole brisket......
Tell us about building a smoker. Hot or cold smoker? Materials, Fuel, temperature control? Picture?
What kind do you have now, and what do you love, not like so much about it?
Made a terra cotta pot smoker. It's electric as to skirt the Foxridge no open flame rule. Worked surprisingly well. Last I checked it's still functional and chilling at my parent's place. Originally I just monitored the temp and used the heat controls on the electric single burner stove I had torn apart to make it. Later in it's life I found an electric thermostat switch that had a range up to 250F. Similar but slightly better to this https://www.amazon.com/INKBIRDPLUS-Thermostat-Temperature-Controller-Dig...

Currently I have a pit barrel cooker and couldn't be happier. Anything that I could do that would make the results better would take more effort. Charcoal smoking just doesn't get any easier. Someday when I have my own place I might get something else, but I have no urge to replace it at the moment. I think I've had it for about 5 years now and it's traveled quite a bit and it's put in some good work.
love my pit barrel cooker!
+++ re: the PBC
+1 for the pit barrel...i love mine...everything always comes out so good. lately been making some simple jalapeno poppers for the neighborhood...just jalapenos stuffed with goat cheese, wrapped in bacon....nothing fancy, but so good
Wanna kick them up just a smidge? Add a strip of chicken in there before wrapping with bacon...
What's the weirdest thing you saw at a truck stop?
I don't have any great stories, but probably a daytime hooker. Not my thing personally. I generally try to keep my space from trouble.
Your journey sounds very similar to the one my son is on, right down to pursuing a career in automotive mechanics in Raleigh. Like, VERY similar. Kudos to you for powering through, as I know first (or second I guess) hand how tough all that is.
The good news is there is no shortage of jobs. The bad news is there seems to be a shortage of GOOD jobs. Thanks and I hope he figures things out too.
Hear hear about struggling at the Math Empo. We all paid for college for instruction not online classes we could take at home....
What is the story behind your profile image? Do you remember which game/field show/etc? (Coming from a former trumpet MV)
My main goal in life was a VT degree without setting foot inside the Empo. Starting at NRCC made all my dreams come true.
I went through before the math emporium opened. I think it opened the year after I finished my last math class.
Lucky
You're Brett A. right? If so we were both in Stefanie's rank my freshman year. This is Will. I don't remember which game it's from it's been a minute. I also don't remember the last time I wore the fedora. lol
You are correct, I hope life has been treating you well Man! I cant remember the last time I spoke with anyone in good ol rank 29 (at least I'm pretty sure it was 29 lol). I am with you, if I could do it all again I would in a heartbeat.
Thanks dude. Hope things are going well for you too!
I could bitch and moan but this thread isn't about me lol. Thanks for being so open about your journey. It really sounds like you've built up a ton of resiliency over the years. Congrats on your degree! You will be some added inspiration for me
I definitely appreciate hearing from you and if it makes you feel better I completely rewrote my story partially because I thought I was complaining too much.
During your time in the MVs, at football games when it would be the HTs turn to play in the stands, was there a trumpet that, while not being particularly good, was at least audible in the NEZ?
Wait, there's another band at the football games?
(Sorry, I don't know why I feel so competitive with the HTs)
Quite frankly I never noticed anything that specific about the HTs. I was more focused on what we were doing or the football team. Y'all were definitely audible overall though.
I was a civilian living in Rasche hall during the 93-94 year. The HT practiced outside the window. There were more than one occasion, when I would put the speakers in the window and play whatever they were supposed to be playing and yell out this is what it is supposed to sound like.
Aw man that's kind of messed up, but also hilarious!
We had a guy in my class that could blare a trumpet at decibels incredible. For a while, he was the designated reveille blower, and his instructions were to play it as loudly as he could in the direction of the civilian dorms. He blew that horn so hard that the notes would go flat. Complaints, if I recall correctly, ended his run. That gave us all the grins, for sure. The HTs aren't what once they were, but at the time, they were the only band on campus and we marched 100 guys in some really cool drills and put on a decent half time show. Retired as the winner of the Presidential Inaugural Parade after several years on top, the HTs of old were definitely not a 2nd tier organization and represented VT and the Corps well. While military stuff was not my bag, and a stint in the Army cemented that truth, I will always have respect for the HTs.
The first few days the reveille blower stood outside the door under the civilian area to blow it. The third day we dumped a five gallon bucket of water on him. He moved after that. 93 was one of the first years of Tech really overcrowding and we civilians in the military dorm were not happy being there.
This scenario would not have played out that way in my day... just saying :)
How right you are. If things didn't get physical, the next morning there would have been a bunch of very loud trumpeters making sure you woke up while standing far enough away and maybe repeating it a couple of times for emphasis. But, more likely, it would have gotten physical back in those days.
And by the way, were the rats still "pulling shit" when you were in?
Maybe to you young folks. There was a building freeze in much of the 1980s. Classes in the Lyric theater, former store rooms, anywhere they could find space!
The year after I left. Lived in Rasche all 4 years. You will be happy to know that the 2024 edition and the past 20 editions of the HTs are nothing more than the MV's in cadet uniforms. So they probably play tech triumph accordingly now.
Explain. My first inclination is to be offended and choose violence, but I wanna hear you out.
Dammit. That was not the validation I was looking for.
My senior year, the drum major, who was my roommate a couple times, and was a music major and now conductor, would always get pissed cause I intentionally played as loud as I could at all times and it stuck out.
Dave never really cared for me either cause I'd do the same shit during our annual combined field shows.
If it makes you feel better, Dave had a knack for calling me out too. Didn't mater if I was in the middle of the line and it was messed up 4 or 5 people in front of me, it all too often would be referred to as "Will's line". He did seem to like me most of the time though.
It's wild how he was able to remember the number of names and people that he did. If he picked on you it was because he liked you haha
This completely tracks - knowing both Dave and who I'm pretty sure I could guess who your roommate would be knowing the amount of HT Music Majors
What's a guilty pleasure of yours?
What's something that really grinds your gears?
What's your least favorite repair/maintenance to do on a car?
1. I stress eat for sure, but at least I learned how to make some fantastic comfort food because of that. Musically my guilty pleasure is Michael McDonald. I hated his voice as a kid for some reason, but now it just feels so damn smooooth.
2. My current manager is total chode (he's a UNC fan so I'm 100% sure he's not paying for a TKP membership). He's told me very obvious lies and that definitely bothers me quite a bit. He's mellowed out slightly since he started at the shop, but I'll never fully trust him.
3. Tire rotations on large/lifted trucks and SUVs, I always feel like I'm one small mistake away from my back exploding or breaking my foot/leg.
Honorable mention to the chevy traverses that have the oil filter tucked right below the exhaust manifold that has to be removed/installed from the top of the vehicle. Best believe the customer is always a waiter and was just driven 20 miles so it's VERY hot. Luckily we don't have too many of those that come to my current shop.
What's the almost arrested you've been?
Can't believe it took this long to get asked this one.
It's either:
A. My highschool senior trip me and my buddies went to my friend's family cabin in rural WV on the Cacapon river. One of the days there we ventured into the mountains and found a very luxurious cabin that was clearly unoccupied at the time. It drew our curiosity so we looked around a bit. One of my friends either stepped on the cellar door or tried to pull it open and an alarm went off. We headed out confident that we be long gone before anyone showed up. Not even 10 minutes later the sheriff found us in the woods and questioned us. Luckily he sent us on our way.
B. My first car was a black on black Lincoln Town Car. When my dad owned it, it developed an issue where the external lights would randomly go out. A couple of mechanics could never figure it out. We eventually figured out that there was a fuse panel in the footwell that was missing the original cover. The fuse that stuck out the most was for the lights and sometimes got kicked when getting in and out of the vehicle. A couple years into the future it's my car and I'm driving back to college. The issue with the lights hasn't happened for years at this point. It's late at night and I'm going a bit faster than I should have on 81. Police lights suddenly turn on behind me. Shit. Then my lights go out. Cop shot right past me and I pull over and resecure the fuse and all is good again. I can't imagine that cop would've been happy had he found me after that, but I really wasn't trying to do anything, just some crazy timing!
Sorry, sleeping at the wheel here.
Favorite MV stand tune - go
Specifically not Crazy Train. Either the Imperial March or Jungle Boogie.
Jungle Boogie is an inspired choice - not one that actually I feel like made it to being played all that often
Thanks for taking a turn MVhokie69!
Got a nominee for AMA #30?
If 8300A_HOKIE'12 has time it'd be cool to hear what he's been up to over the past 10 years.
Otherwise feel free to nominate someone on your list.

How about Bar1990 or skippypbm?
Have at it if either of you want to have a go for #30.
Shoot here I am a day late. I am celebrating my bachelor party this week, flying down to Florida tomorrow, may not be the best candidate in the next few days lol. But I am open to doing it after
OK - you'll be #31 after whoever goes next-
Ok...trying someone else for #30....how about:
maxANDcheese? Or..
daveinop?
I'll give skippypbm a chance to fire one up first. If I don't see a new one tomorrow morning I'll put something together.
Just a heads up y'all can ask me anything, but that doesn't mean I'm going to answer honestly. Spreadsheet ain't getting me.
Sounds good....I might have to I have a fluffernutter in honor of Skippypbm tonight!
Also, I hadnt considered the idea of someone doing an AMA where they just totally make shit up. That would be a total TKPC thing to do.....
Just fyi- I am a purist- only Skippy Creamy peanut butter on Premium Saltines, white bread or white bread toast(or straight out of the jar of course).
IDK if my life would be that interesting to y'all, lol.
I'll give skippypbm a chance to fire one up first.
definitely the right direction, lol
I didn't mean you wouldn't put together a good AMA, Skippy was just listed before us.
oh, for sure.
