Maybe. But being one of the only schools to end in the black every year makes it easy to hide funneling money incorrectly. JW did an internal audit, no outliers, move on. Plus, Whit probably came in a wanted a fresh snapshot to see where He stood. Thats probably why it was just noticed. Most large companies (most D-1 schools function like Fortune500 firms) wouldn't discover it for years; sometimes it takes a whistleblower to expose something. He was media relations as well. If a school accountant was doing it, it probably would have been easier to notice it.
No wonder we had money problems within the athletic department...

Well there is a little extra money freed up to pay for a new basketball coach moving forward.
So is this Whit coming in and taking care of business? Just find it odd that it's been happening for this long and we find out about it so soon after hiring a new AD. If that's the case then it sucks that this was happening, but a round of applause for Whit coming in and laying down the law. Definitely makes me feel even better about this hire.

For those who don't know, Director of media & broadcasting is the manager for all of the athletic dept's in house video. Kevin leads a team (of 4-6 full time employees, 6-10 students) that films EVERY football practice and scrimmage (for coaches film), every football and basketball game (for HokiePlayBack), and films, cuts, and edits footage/highlights for HokieSports/Internal use (pump-up videos, highlights for athletic banquets, etc.).
I know he's held the position since graduating college. Some of my best friends were on the 'video team' throughout college. Interested to see how this plays out.
Anyone know what the name of his business was? Just curious if it was so closely associated with Virginia Tech that these clients of his thought they were paying Virginia Tech or if they were also guilty, knowingly paying Hicks less for information than they would have had to pay Tech for.

Wow! Messy and obviously created a very big gap between the Board and the University President. That kind of rift can take until the key members of the board involved in the attempted "coup" resign to be resolved. Is their still bad blood in the water?
From my understanding, there are some moving on, and others not, but it's not as big of "news" recently. I'd have to do a little more research into it, which frankly I don't want to research any further on something with LOLUVA, but there was more to it than what is even posted on that Wiki.
You could probably type 'Teresa Sullivan Scandal' into Google and find out the worst parts about it. If I recall correctly, she was ousted not for just any old disagreement, but for practices that border on illegality (not exactly illegal, but should be). I don't remember everything as I was too busy with my own life at the time to pay that much attention, but I remember thinking to myself that only UVA would rehire someone they fired for doing something so wrong. I do Improv and for a while, she and that whole situation was a running gag.

Just a personal comment - if he was actively engaged in embezzling from the Tech Athletic Department it seems odd that it wasn't discovered before now.
If he is indeed guilty of a crime I'm sure he will be dealt with appropriately by both Virginia Tech and law enforcement, if necessary, but how does he regain his reputation if it turns out he's not guilty?

Dammit Now I want Gumby's pizza. Havent had it in years and it still haunts me in a good way. Same thing with a shrimp po boy sandwich from New Orleans during the National Championship game trip. Gumby's is why I use Ranch dressing on my pizza crust and get weird looks from most of the people I know for it.

I would imagine people downvoted this due to the reference to Club 216, which is an LGBT friendly club in Charlottesville. Since I cannot see the posted picture on my work computer, I cannot tell what the joke is, just assume that some people think that Alum07 is making a potential gay joke, which is frowned upon, hence the downvotes.

When someone at work today told me about an investigation in the athletic department I about freaked. Although this is terrible, I'm glad it doesn't involve players or coaches, or something that could lead to a sanction or probation. This still sucks though.

I agree. If he did it, I hope it was only him involved. I'm still a firm believer that people are innocent until proven guilty, however, in this day and age, it seems you're guilty until proven innocent then you're still guilty.
Still a little confused about what he is accused of doing. Selling VT video on the side? Kind of like an insider trading deal? With the poor quality of video on Hokiesports.com this might be a good thing if he leaves.
Hearing reports that this employee has now resigned his position over the weekend. Not sure if that's the end of it or if this is just another step in the process.
That entire department has been in limbo. Nobody in charge because he was just on unpaid leave and couldn't be replaced until the situation was resolved.
So, they should be able to hire someone or move someone into the position and move on now, right? That has to be be good for a new beginning.
