OT: LOLUVA Restricts Access to The Hill

Perhaps the crowning achievement of VT football the last 3 years. I'm also skeptical about his claim that they fill Scott to 65-70% capacity on most game days.

The Tuten Rule!

If Tuten never accomplishes anything else as a Hokie, he will have this to be remembered by. His desecration of the hill might have been the breaking point for the booHoos.

This is why UVA Football cannot be taken seriously. Instead of being mad about being embarrassed at home and their rival storming the field, motivating them to actually show up for games and improve their program, they just limit access and ruin the experience for everyone. It's like they've just mailed it in on being remotely competitive and are just doing damage control. They've tried other stupid measures to limit VT fans from getting tickets. They just don't have a football culture and frankly don't get it with respect to the rivalry. Top candidate for the SEC my butt.

Yeah now there's just gonna be basically no one on the hill

I don't think this was the right hill for them to die on.

Beautiful, just beautiful. The only thing better is if they board the whole stadium up and hang 'Permanently Closed' signs on it

They can't do that to Lane North!

We couldn't allow it.

Poverty program. Thanks for the chuckle on this last Saturday before football. IT'S ALMOST HERE I CAN SMELL IT

Had just read this article and came here to share in the clear misery of the writer.

I mean the article is spot on. Virginia as a program is uncompetitive on the field and as such they are having to make policy to not have the stadium overrun with visiting fans on game days.

Maybe the hill won't be as clogged but that will just make the rest of the stadium, especially the season ticket holder sections who routinely sell off the VT game, unbearable for them. Not my problem.

As an aside, we really need to stop benchmarking ourselves against that school.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

As we move to pro college sports - get used to this. The NFL is full of visiting fans now. Its a "thing". Instead of buying Detroit season tickets, Lions fans pick a warm weather away game to go to to watch their team. I live in Phoenix and the stadium is full of visiting fans, especially late in the year when other places are cold. I see CFB trending more in this direction as the NFL has.

It was hilarious during the last few years of Dan Snyder's ownership in DC to hear him defend ticket sales knowing that 75% of those sales were to visiting fans. Videos would surface on a weekly basis of the stadium covered in visiting teams colors lol.

Snyder- brags about attendance. Also Snyder- literally removes 40K seats from his stadium

I was at the Mike Evans coming out party however many years ago that was... I bet it was 80% Tampa fans.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I did this for years. I went to every away game one year for cheaper than season tickets. I've been to more away games since I graduated that I've been to games at Lane. Maryland, WVU, Pitt, UVA are all closure to me than VT. I have a free place to stay in the triangle, so UNC, Duke, NC State, and ECU are easy. And other than WVU, where I have connections, tickets are easy to get.

The funniest part of the article is it's pretty self deprecating but the author did try to sugarcoat it a little by saying they haven't been relevant for 15 years and that it's been Hokie lopsided for 15 years. In reality it's more like 25 and you could easily make the case for 30.

Yeah I thought he was cherry-picking the timeline a bit. The Hoos at least had a pulse early in the Groh years, but realistically we have dominated the series for the past 25 years and really 30 if you want to look a bit further. Over the last 30 seasons, VT is 25-5 against UVA in football. And four of those five losses came between 21 and 30 years ago. Let that sink in. Utter domination.

Also someone should go and edit the VT-UVA football rivalry page on Wikipedia. It reads like some old stodgy Hoo alum wrote it. Referring to VT as VPI and all the rivalry highlights are mostly the few good moments UVA has ever had.

Yeah, no doubt some hoo zima enthusiast did that last wiki update

1998 was the last time UVA was truly good at football. Groh had teams close to that level in 2003, 2007, and maybe one other year I'm forgetting, but they were far and away the exception rather than the rule. Ever since Timecop replaced That Guy in the Glass, they've been a joke....come to think of it, they were a joke before that, too.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Agreed. The series was competitive in the 90s with those Welsh teams and Beamer's 90s teams once he got our program rolling. That was the last time I thought the series was truly on equal footing. The early Groh seasons had some talent and made bowl games, but other than their win in 2003, not much else to show for it. You're right that 1998 team was the end of when UVA was truly competitive in the rivalry and nationally. Once they ran Welsh out, it's been a long, slow downward spiral for that program.

If you guys write up what you want added to that page, I will find the time to update it. Just reply here with adds. Let's do it right though.

Well, they are counting the visiting team's fans, so we give the 100% capacity every other year.

I'm genuinely optimistic about the Hokies in 2024, but this is a pretty underwhelming boast.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

It's a liberal arts school, not a science school. People who are good at math know it's not 65-75% capacity, it's not a 15 year dominance, it's not a public ivy, etc. People who want to be praised for creativity and hide behind "you just don't get art" when people tell them their idea does not work in the real world feel at home at LOL. If they think closing the grassy knoll protects their fantasy world it will just be another real world prep crash course next time we play at Lane North....

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Well stated. I know those people, and you describe them perfectly.

5 minutes after kickoff at the spring fling.

In 1983, when Virginia Tech stomped Virginia 48-0 in Charlottesville, a group of Hokies hauled down the goal posts and proceeded to use the uprights as a battering ram against the door of the Tech locker room. (There's that Dark Ages thing again). Tech coach Bill Dooley was not amused. (UVa officials probably weren't, either. Usually it's the home team that does the honors.)

I was AT that game (the '83 squeaker where we won 48-0. It was glorious and the first time I had seen visiting fans tear down the goalposts in opponent' stadium ....but then again,, it IS Lane North so was it REALLY the OPPONENT"S stadium....?

There's some form of intelligent life over there, sort of.

"Simple solution.....don't loose to JMU and get steamrolled by VT at home. Problem solved. "

but then there's the most intelligent one of all...
""Just beat them!" Sure. I agree. But given that we probably can't, we need to do something to keep that biannual beating from turning into an absolute humiliation."

I thank the man upstairs often that we didn't have to play JMU the past several years- they would have beaten us.

There are some people over there that do have a good sense of humor about their team. Remember one where someone suggested the team would be really good and could challenge for the division or conference title or whatever it was. One of the responses was something along the line of:

What sport are you referring to? You know this is the football board, right?

Then there was one of the many years they had a bad lost to open the season. Person writes they went to the game and made the mistake of leaving their season tickets on the dashboard. When they got back to their car, someone had broken the window and left their season tickets on his dashboard.

Sucks to suck.

....hard things......together.

Are the three fans on the right late for the Spring Fling, or early for the season ending beatdown?

Little bit of both. But prob just cache hunting.

Nah, they're season ticket (free with every ValPak) holders scoping out their "early departure to beat the traffic" route.

That's what I was thinking, must be a spring game photo

UVA sucks. Probably didn't want students to start chasing a cheese wheel down the hill that could disrupt the quidditch competition.

lol someone from VT is absolutely working for EA on this project, and you cannot convince me otherwise.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

in all likelihood, yes. Also, it could just be someone who has a specific hatred for UVA and knows who their big rival brother is

I know people who hate UVA but didn't go to VT or claim VT as theirs in anyway. They just legitimately hate the boohoos
